ONLY BJP WORKS FOR THE
INTEREST OF CITIZENS: CM
Yogesh Sharma
Lucknow: In a frontal
attack on Samajwadi
Party, Uttar Pradesh
CM Yogi said that dur-
ing the tenure of Akh-
ilesh Yadav, terrorists
were worshipped and
fake cases were lodged
against Hindus.
“SP govt had with-
drawn cases against
terrorists who had at-
tacked Ram Janmab-
hoomi and false cases
were put on the inno-
cent ,” said the CM
while addressing the
Pal/Baghel Community
on Wednesday
.
Mincing no words,
Yogi said, “Akhilesh be-
longs to the party that
works for terrorists
whereas BJP works for
the poor and is whole-
heartedly committed
towards the welfare of
the state and its people
including poor, farm-
ers, and women.”
While addressing the
event, he stated, “One is
always remembered for
his good work. “People
should be made aware
of the development
works done in the last
4.5 years. They should
also be told about how
our Government saved
the lives and livelihood
of the people during the
COVID-19 pandemic. It
is only BJP that works
for the interests of the
citizen of the country
and the state.”
The CM also invoked
Babasaheb Ambedkar -
considered as an iconic
figure for the backward
classes. He said that Dr
Ambedkar emerged as
the voice of the down-
trodden classes and was
revered due to his work
towards social justice,
equality, Indian values
and tradition.

Lucknow: “By improv-
ing the health infra-
structure, our govern-
ment has paved the way
for the development of
the state, as no place
can develop fully in ab-
sence of medical re-
sources. Every district
will soon have a medi-
cal college to provide
accessible healthcare
services to the citizens
in the state”, said Chief
Minister Yogi while
launching 144 develop-
ment and medical pro-
jects of Rs 1,132 crore in
Gonda.
“The state, the gov-
ernment has worked in
a planned manner to
improve the existing
healthcare system and
expand the health infra-
structure in UP,” he
said while laying the
foundation stone of
Government Medical
College at Rs 282 crore
in Gonda.
“Today, the founda-
tion stone of a medical
college in Gonda is be-
ing laid with the resolu-
tion to start admissions
in this institute by the
year 2022-23,” he added.
Highlighting the im-
proved road infra-
structure in UP, Yogi
added, “Earlier, it used
to take about 3 to 3.5
hours to travel from
Gonda to Devipatan,
now it takes even less
than one hour.”
Hitting out at the pre-
vious governments for
turning the state into a
centre of ‘riots and cha-
os’, Yogi said that,
“none of the previous
governments thought
of building a medical
college here. Has any-
one thought why? The
reason is that their de-
velopment was just con-
fined to their own ben-
efit. Had they worked
for the welfare of peo-
ple, the place would
have witnessed develop-
ment long back.”

Lucknow: With Luc-
know becoming the
most expensive team
ever bought in the Indi-
anPremierLeague(IPL)
history, a lot of heads
have turned towards the
city as it hogs the lime-
light across the word.
Even before the first
edition started in the
year 2008, it was Mum-
bai Indians that was
bought at approximate-
ly Rs 800 crore. And
now, with RPSG group
grabbing the team from
the city of Nawabs for a
whopping Rs 7k crore+,
th IPL is showing the
world why cricket is the
second most popular
sport on the planet.
The BCCI was hoping
for a cumulative bid in
the range of Rs 10,000
crore for both
Ahmedabad and Luc-
know but to their sur-
prise, earned Rs 7090
crore from Goenka’s RP-
SG Group for the Luc-
know franchise itself.
The two teams were sold
off forapproximatelyRs
12k crore. The Lucknow
purchase was sure to
evoke reactions from
the world with former
England captain Mi-
chael Vaughan saying
that while the price for
one team is so high, it
was clear that the IPL
was the most important
aspect of Cricket across
the world.
Australian great
Shane Warne too joined
Vaughan in stating that
no wonder why cricket
is the second most
viewed on the planet it
because of the money
involved in the IPL.
Meanwhile, BCCI Presi-
dent Sourav Ganguly
said he wasn’t sur-
prised with the way
things went in Dubai on
Monday. ”We were not
surprised actually, this
(IPL) is a big brand and
we are extremely happy
that Indian cricket is
moving growing for-
ward. That is what is
important for us. Con-
gratulations to Sanjeev
and CVC for being num-
ber one and number
two but we look at Indi-
an cricket and that’s
what our job is.
The more Indian
cricket prospers, the
better it is,” Ganguly
said in a released state-
ment. “All the money
goes back to the Indian
cricket.

The 57-year-old man

One case of Zika vi-

Treatment of the pa-

The BJP government remained
obdurate and arrogant to deny
discussion on Pegasus scandal and
derailed the Monsoon Session of
Parliament. After the Supreme Court
order, they have an egg on their face
that calls for honest reflection.
TOP TWEETS
WHISTLEBLOWER
PUTS SOCIAL
MEDIA GIANT
FACEBOOK
INTO TROUBLE
acebook, an im-
mensely popular so-
cial media platform,
is in the news for the
wrong reasons. Al-
though Facebook is not new to
controversies, the recent revela-
tions by whistleblower Frances
Haugen have caused a bigger
dent in its reputation. Face-
book’s revenues have, however,
risen 17 percent to $ 9.2 billion.
Although under pressure after
calls for his removal, the reve-
nue buffer gives Mark Zucker-
berg, Facebook’s chief execu-
tive, the cushion to brush away
the allegations presented by
Haugen in British parliament. A
lawmaker from Scotland said,
“Facebook is failing to prevent
harm to children, it’s failing to
stop the spread of disinforma-
tion, it is failing to stop the
spread of hate speech. It does
have the power to deal with these
issues, it’s just choosing not to.”
Indian authorities are also
thinking of calling Facebook’s
executives to understand how
the social media platform’s algo-
rithms work. India is one of the
biggest victims of hate messag-
es which have flooded Facebook
virtually unchecked.
F
n a major setback
to the Central gov-
ernment the Su-
preme Court re-
fused to buy its
argument about national se-
curity concerns and formed
a six-member committee of
experts to inquire into the
Pegasus spyware issue. The
committee will be headed by
former Supreme Court judge,
Justice RV Raveendran and
has eminent cyber security
experts who are free from
prejudices. The panel will in-
vestigate if the Pegasus spy-
ware was used on phones or
other devices of the citizens
of India to access stored data,
eavesdrop on conversations
and intercept information.
While passing the order,
the Chief Justice of India N.
Ramana said, “The State can-
not get a free pass every time
by raising national security
concerns. No omnibus prohi-
bition can be called against a
judicial review. The Centre
should have justified its stand
here and not render the court
a mute spectator.” The CJI
bluntly told the government
that it “would not rely on any
government agencies” or a
government-appointed com-
mittee for the probe. The re-
mark shows the extent to
which the apex court has lost
trust in the Centre.
At a time when democratic
institutions look compro-
mised, the order on Pegasus
spyware has once again reaf-
firmed people’s faith in the
Supreme Court. As the Cen-
tre was not forthcoming on
the truth about Pegasus, the
Bench said that surveillance
affects people’s rights and
freedoms and not just jour-
nalists and social activists
alone but every citizen ought
to be protected against viola-
tions of privacy
.
The Pegasus spyware con-
troversy had shaken the very
foundation of democracy
and the court, which was
flooded with PILs, was peo-
ple’s only hope.
SUPREME COURT WON’T
TRUST ANY GOVT AGENCY
As the Centre was not
forthcoming on the
truth about Pegasus,
the Bench said that
surveillance affects
people’s rights and
freedoms and not just
journalists and social
activists alone but every
citizen ought to be
protected against

GIRLS @ NATIONAL
DEFENCEACADEMY
n Aug 18, 2021, the Supreme
Court ruled that girls should
also be inducted into Armed
Forces through the premier
defence training institute-
National Defence Academy,
Khadakwasla, Pune. With
one stroke of pen, the Su-
preme Court has done what
crores of expenditure on pro-
moting Defence Career and
catchy advertisements like
‘Do You Have It In You’, ‘Lead
A Life Less Ordinary’, ‘Ocean
of Opportunities in Indian
Navy’ and ‘Touch The Sky
With Glory’ could not do in
all these years. I am told that
there is great enthusiasm
amongst the girls to compete
for meagre NDA seats avail-
able for them but I am certain
that the applications from
the boys have increased man-
ifold. While the veterans and
serving officers are sulking
over the missed opportuni-
ties, the cadets at the NDA
are bracing up for impressive
performances to win over
‘the hearts and minds’ of the
female cadets. “Boys will be
Boys”. However, Campus at
the ‘Cradle of Excellence’
has got a romantic fragrance.
THE VERDICT
In a major step towards gen-
der equality, on 25 March
2021, the Supreme Court first
directed armed forces to
grant permanent commis-
sion to women entry officers
and on 18 Aug 2021, allowed
eligible girls to take the ex-
amination for admission to
National Defence Academy
(NDA) scheduled to be held in
Nov 2021. While delivering
the landmark judgment, the
Supreme Court bench ob-
served that the mindset has
to change, which is not
changing at all. The next log-
ical step, I suppose, will be to
induct them into combat
arms of Indian Army. Hope
the Court will take note of
unique challenges before
they pass orders for gender
equality in combat arms.
WINDS OF CHANGE
Girl cadets will be trained at
NDA with the aim of grant-
ing them Permanent Com-
mission, as has been recently
indicated by the Armed Forc-
es. These decisions are bound
to cause some consternation
in a tradition bound system
but it should be welcomed
with caution. The concerns
and objections by a segment
of the serving and veteran
male officers is initial inhibi-
tion and a psychological
mental block as the NDA has
been a purely male bastion
for 65 years.
Major issues will have to
thought through -- for exam-
ple, the number of seats open
for girls in the initial batch-
es; whether there will be
separate squadrons created
for girls; physical training
routine; uniforms and a host
of other issues. We should
study academies globally to
get an idea on how to turn
from an all-boys only institu-
tion to boys and girls. How-
ever, any change takes its due
time to be accepted and
streamlined.
LIFE AT NDA
Entry into NDA is a dream
come true for young aspir-
ants. Entry should therefore
be purely on merit and to the
most deserving. It must be
reserved for only those who
meet the stringent standards
of the institution.
NDA is known for intense
outdoor training, indoctrina-
tion into disciplined defence
lifestyle and simply to say-
‘Making Men out of Boys’.
NDA training also includes
group games conducted by
physical training teams, ac-
tivities such as cross-country
race, drills, horse riding etc.
The unorganized punish-
ment regime is also there to
physically toughen them up
and make them mentally ro-
bust. Along with changing
mindsets, the nature of offi-
cial and unofficial physical
punishments will also have
to change -- what punish-
ments can be given and by
whom will also be laid out.
PRECEDENCES FROM
OTA, CHENNAI
The Officers Training Acade-
my(OTA)Chennai,originally
only a men’s training institu-
tion, commenced training
women in 1992 to be officers
through the Short Service
route, so precedence does ex-
ist about training and logis-
tics for girl cadets. There is no
reason why it cannot eventu-
ally happen at NDA also.
Learning from the experi-
ences at the OTA which
trains both men and women
officers, it can be said with
pride that female cadets have
often proved themselves on
equal terms and won the cov-
eted ‘Sword of Honour’ in
open competition against
their male counterparts.
CONCLUSION
Change is the spice of life.
Adapting to changing societal
norms is the key to keeping
yourself relevant and battle
worthy
. The armed forces also
needtogrowupwithtimeand
treat women as equally com-
petent officers. However, any
change takes its due time to
be accepted and streamlined.
Any change like this needs in-
depth deliberation, since it
will have a long-term impact
onthearmedforces.TheNDA
gates will open a plethora of
new horizons and break the
stereotypes. Let the girl ca-
dets at NDA be the harbingers
of change.

New Delhi: There is
concern in Rashtriya

regarding the displeas-

informed sources, this
was discussed during
an important meeting
of union office bearers
in Noida recently
.
Along with the elec-
tions to be held next
year, the Sangh office-
bearers have also ex-
pressed concern about
the lasting impact on
the society
.
They feel that even
though a dispute has
started on the issue of
farmers, but due to this
community tension is
increasing, which is not
good for the society
. It is
being said that in the
meetings that were held
for successive days, eve-
ry aspect of displeas-

and Sikh communities
was discussed.
It is being said that
Krishna Gopal, who is
looking after the work
of coordination be-
tween the BJP and the
Sangh, also attended
this meeting and after
the meeting the BJP has
been asked to reduce
this tension.
The Sangh has said
that it does not want
any kind of community
tension at this time.
Due to this, electoral
losses have also been
feared. It is notewor-

these groups are pro-

being sought to reduce
this tension without re-

In this Brahmins
are angry for many rea-
sons. But BJP is confi-
dent thinking Brahmin
voters will not opt for
any other party as they
have no option.
BSP is not in fight
and Brahmins do not
vote for SP. That’s why
they will have to vote
for the BJP with a bang.
Priyanka can pro-
vide an alternative to
that vote. Whatever
vote the Congress gets
will be the vote of the
BJP.
Similarly, Congress
has made a Dalit Chief
Minister in Punjab, so
that it can make a dent
in the non-Jatav Dalit
vote as well.
Congress has
made the Chief
Minister of Chhattis-
garh as senior observer
of UP. He hails from
OBC Kurmi caste and
this aspect will also be
helpful to the Congress.
In this way, if the
Congress makes some
dent in SP’s Muslim
vote, it will also make a
dent in BJP’s upper
caste, non-Yadav OBC
and non-Jatav Dalit
votes.
Due to the presence
of Priyanka, the women
votes will go to the Con-
gress and it will also be
a big loss for the BJP.
Will Congress only cut votes in UP?

New Delhi: The elec-
tionof thenationalpres-
ident of the Congress
party will be held in
August-September next
year, but it was decided
in the meeting of the
Congress Working Com-
mittee on Saturday that
Rahul Gandhi would be-
come President again.
Senior party leaders
proposed his name and
he also said that he
would consider it. Even
G-23 leaders have sup-
ported Rahul’s name.
So now the possibility
is almost completely
gone that any leader
will challenge Rahul in
party President elec-
tion.
Earlier it seemed that
one of the rebel Con-
gress leaders could
float their nomina-
tion for the post,
but that is highly
unlikely now.
After what happened
in CWC, no leader, in
his complete senses,
will go down to contest
elections against any
member of Gandhi fam-
ily. It was possible that
someone would have
contested the election if
Rahul had played the
stakes of getting some
other President. But by
fighting against Rahul,
one does not want to be-
come Jitendra Prasad.
Prasad had challenged
Sonia in 2000 and lost
badly
. However, Sharad
Pawar gave a tough
fight to previous party
President Sitaram Kes-
ari. So, if there was any
other leader, there
would have been a situ-
ation of elections, but
there would be no such
chance in front of Ra-
hul. The way he was
elected unopposed in
2017 he will be elected
in 2022 as well. All the
veteran leaders who
raised questions on
functioning of Con-
gress high command
have surrendered. Al-
though the interest of
many satraps who have
left the Congress is in
fact that Rahul
should be chal-
lenged, but
there is no one
to challenge
him.
No ‘leadership’ to challenge
Rahul Gandhi’s ‘leadership’

Chandigarh: The real
good news for the Con-
gress party in Punjab is
that former CM Captain
Amarinder Singh is
forming a separate par-
ty and the BJP will
align with him.
Captain has tried his
hand in past to form a
party and returned to
Congress after failing
miserably
.
However, Manpreet
Badal’s history in Pun-
jab is likely to be repeat-
ed with Captain’s an-
nouncement of contest-
ing polls, as a separate
party. Manpreet had
contested assembly
polls in 2012 by forming
his own party and for
the first time after near-
ly four and a half dec-
ades, paved way for a
party to return to power
for second time in a row.
Manpreet is the neph-
ew of Parkash Singh
Badal, the longest serv-
ing CM of Punjab, and
was Finance Minister
in Badal government
formed in 2007. But he
knew that command of
Akali Dal was to be in
hands of Sukhbir Bad-
al.
So by rebelling
against his uncle, he
formed Punjab People’s
Party and contested
polls in 2012. Akali Dal
got advantage of this as
anti-govt votes went to
him and despite de-
crease in votes, Akali
Dal won for the second
time in a row.
Now, it seems Cap-
tain will also work on
same lines.
With Captain going
with BJP, anti-govern-
ment votes will surely
go to their combined ac-
count.
Congress will benefit
from this as the main
contest of Congress in
Punjab is with AAP and
SAD. If anti-govt vote
was polarised towards
either of these parties,
then Congress would
have suffered.
Second thing is that
Captain has no ‘politi-
cal capital’ other than
Jat Sikh vote and this
vote is also the ‘capital’
of SAD and a part of the
same vote has been
with AAP as well!
Will Manpreet Badal’s history be
repeated in Punjab through Amarinder?

INDIAEXPRESSESCONCERN
OVER CHINA’S NEW LAND BOUNDARY LAW
China's unilateral decision to
bring about legislation which
can have an implication
on our existing bilateral
arrangements on border
management as well as on
the boundary question is of
concern to us. The passage
of this new law (China's
Land Boundary Law) does
not in our view confer any legitimacy to
the so-called China-Pakistan Boundary
Agreement of 1963 which the GoI has
consistently maintained is illegal and
invalid agreement.
—ARINDAM BAGCHI, Official spokesperson MEA
WHEN WAS THIS
LAW PROPOSED?
In March 2021, the law was first
proposed. Forces of India and
China have been in a standoff since
last April-May following clashes
along the LAC. The clashes oc-
curred when the Chinese troops
were mobilized and who carried
out multiple transgressions.
ABOUT THE
NEW LAW...
This new law according to the
Chinese media reports is for the
“protection and exploitation of
the country’s land border areas”.
This new law is not meant for the
ongoing border disputes with In-
dia. There are disputes along the
3,800-km boundary with China.
INDIA TELLS
CHINA...
India said, “We also
expect that China will
avoid undertaking ac-
tion under the pretext
of this law which could
unilaterally alter the
situation in the India-
China border areas”.
WHY IS CHINA
DOING THIS?
It is to reaffirm its territo-
rial claims. It is building
628 “moderately well
off villages’’, and this is
being done to encour-
age the herders to settle
in the disputed areas in
border areas.
NEW LAW W.E.F
JAN 1, 2022...
The new Chinese law will
take effect on January 1,
2022. Lawmakers ap-
proved the law at the clos-
ing meeting of a legislative
session of the Standing
Committee of the National
People’s Congress.
THE MEA ON WEDNESDAY SAID THAT THE LAW WILL HAVE ‘NO BEARING ON ARRANGEMENTS BOTH SIDES REACHED

MUKHTAR
ANSARI
‘FACILITATOR’
BEHIND SP-SBSP
ALLIANCE: UP
MINISTER
Uttar Pradesh minister Anand
Swarup Shukla on
Wednesday claimed BSP MLA
Mukhtar Ansari was the
facilitator behind Samajwadi
Party’s new alliance with the
Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party.
He also alleged that terrorist
organisations and many Muslim
countries were providing funds
to “such people” to divide
Hindus. Mukhtar Ansari is the
sutradhar’ (facilitator) of the
alliance between these two
parties. The complicity of
Mukhtar Ansari with SP
president Akhilesh Yadav has
been revealed, the minister told
reporters here. Islamic terrorist
organisations and many Muslim
countries of the world are
providing funds to such people
to divide Hindus. People like
(SBSP chief) Rajbhar are talking
about caste to divide Hindus
because of this funding, he said.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) and
the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj
Party (SBSP) on Wednesday
announced their alliance for the
2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly
polls and gave the slogan
‘Khadeda Howe’, a call to “drive
out” the BJP from the state .
The BJP had forged a poll
alliance with SBSP in the 2017
UP polls. Having four MLAs in
the House, the Om Prakash
Rajbhar-led party is considered
to have influence in over a
dozen districts in Purvanchal
region of the state.

FAVOURABLE
OUTCOME FOR
BUREAUCRACY
AFTER UP
ELECTION
While the leaders of political
parties of Uttar Pradesh have
transfixed their eyes on the
upcoming 2022 assembly
elections in the state, the officers
of the state’s bureaucracy are also
keeping a keen eye over the
sentiment of the public. The
assembly elections will tell us who
won, who lost and who will go on
to become the next Chief Minister
of the state and since the posting
of the officers will also be
somewhat dependent on who
comes to power, the result of the
elections is an interesting topic of
discussion among the officers.
Officers of the bureaucracy are
waiting for the good days to come
but the history and politics in
Uttar Pradesh are making it very
difficult to predict what is going to
happen in the elections and who
will be the next representative
chosen by the public. The officers
too have a bit to gain as a
favourable outcome which can
help them get a good posting.

AFTER DCW CHIEF’S LETTER TO YOGI, RAPE FIR
First India Bureau
Bulandshahr: After
the medical report of a
13-year-old girl con-
firmed sexual assault,
the charge of rape was
added in the FIR by po-
lice here, an official
said on Wednesday.
The minor was raped al-
legedly by her neigh-
bour, who inflicted sev-
eral injuries on her and
tried to strangulate her.
Currently
, the girl is un-
dergoing treatment at a
hospital in Delhi.
The incident took
place on October 15,
when the rape survi-
vor’s parents had gone
to work in the field and
the girl was playing out-
side her home. Around
12 noon, their neigh-
bour, a 45-year-old man,
took the girl inside the
house and raped her.
On the basis of a state-
ment from the minor’s
family
, a case was regis-
tered in the matter at
Ahmadgarh police sta-
tion and the accused
was arrested. Senior
Superintendent of Po-
lice Santosh Kumar

rape was added in the
FIR on Tuesday after
the medical report con-
firmed sexual assault.
A proposal was also
prepared for giving fi-
nancial assistance to
the rape survivor’s fam-

Purvanchal the pivot on
which UP politics may turn
M Tariq Khan
Lucknow: As political
parties draw the battle
line for the high-stakes
assembly polls 2022, the
ruling Bharatiya Jana-
ta Party (BJP) has fo-
cussed its attention on
Purvanchal, with none
other than PM Naren-
dra Modi helming its
campaign blitzkreig by
addressing six public
meetings in the region
in the past four months.
The importance of
Purvanchal can be
gauged from the fact
that PM Modi visited
the region for the sec-
ond time within a span
of five days. He began
cultivating Purvanchal
right from his visit to
Varanasi on July 15. He
then reached Kushina-
gar on October 20,
where the people of
Purvanchal were given
the gift of an interna-
tional airport as well as
development projects
worth Rs 478.74 crore.
He also dedicated wel-
fare projects worth Rs
5,229 crore to the people
of Varanasi.
With 164 Assembly
segments spread across
28 districts, Purvanchal
contributes about 33 per
cent seats to 403-mem-
berUPAssembly
.In2017
assembly polls, BJP won
115 of the 164 assembly
seats. Samajwadi Party
got 17, BSP 14, Congress
2 and others got 16 seats.
This was followed by the
BJP cornering the max-
imum seats from
Purvanchal in the 2019
general elections. “Post
Lakhimpur Kheri vio-
lence and the farmers’
unrest in western UP,
BJP is now focusing on
Purvanchal to make up
for the possible losses of
western UP by winning
there,” says Professor
Muzzamil Hussain, an
educationist and politi-
cal observer. The ruling
party is trying to bal-
ance the caste equa-
tions in eastern UP by
aligning with smaller
caste-based groups as
Apna Dal of Anupriya
Patel, Nishad Party
of Sanjay Nishad. The
Nishad community
comprises 22 sub-castes
and accounts for 14%-
17% of the population
in districts like Mau,
Azamgarh, Varanasi,
Gorakhpur, Santkabir
Nagar and Prayagraj.
But it is not just BJP;
other Opposition par-
ties, too, have set their
eyes on Purvanchal
are trying to consoli-
date their position.
Mau: The Samajwadi
Party and the Suheldev
Bhartiya Samaj Party
on Wednesday an-
nounced their alliance
for the 2022 Uttar
Pradesh assembly polls
and gave the slogan
‘Khadeda Howe’, a call
to “drive out” the BJP
from the state.
The slogan is on the
lines of ‘Khela Hobe’
(game on), which was
coined by the Mamata
Banerjee-led Trinamool
Congress for the West
Bengal assembly polls
that saw the party de-
feat the BJP and storm
back to power for a
third consecutive term.
“Slogan ‘Khela Hobe’
was given in West Ben-
gal and ‘didi’ drove out
the BJP from the state.
Similarly, in Uttar
Pradesh it will be
‘Khadeda Howe’ (drive
out) and the BJP gov-
ernment will be re-
moved by the people of
the state,” Suheldev
Bhartiya Samaj Party
(SBSP) president Om
Prakash Rajbhar said
here. He was address-
ing a ‘Vanchit, Pichh-
da, Dalit and Minority
Bhagidari Ma-
hapanchyat’, during
which Samajwadi Par-
ty (SP) chief Akhilesh
Yadav announced the
alliance between the
two parties for the as-
sembly polls. “When
BJP leaders come to
your village, you
should ask them about
price rise and then ask
them to leave,” Rajbhar
said. Yadav said Rajb-
har has rightly said
that in Uttar Pradesh
‘Khadeda Howe’.
When red and yellow
colours of the SP and
the SBSP unite, every-
one knows who is be-
coming ‘laal-pila’ (an-
gry) in Delhi and Luc-
know, the SP chief said
in a reference to the
BJP governments at
the Centre and in the
state. “Rajbhar will
close the door through
which the BJP came to
power (in Uttar
Pradesh) SP workers
will lock it,” he said.
“There was speculation
before the alliance
about which party will
win how many seats.
But after the alliance,
even big agencies are
saying no one can stop
us,” Yadav said. —PTI

Agra: Rashtriya Lok
Dal (RLD) chief Jayant
Chaudhary on Wednes-
day addressed a huge
public meeting in Mini
Chhaprauli regarding
mission 2022 of UP. On
Wednesday, the entire
society gave a warm
welcome to Jayant
Chaudhary in the meet-
ing. The turban ritual
was completed by law
on behalf of the entire
society.
After this, Jayant
Chaudhary targeted
the BJP government
said that there should
be a struggle, not the
urge for power. I am
also continuously los-
ing elections. He said
that the work of a BJP
leader who crushed the
farmers in the move-
ment reminds me of
the Taliban. We all saw
this in Lakhimpur
Kheri incident. Jayant
said that this govern-
ment operates under
the control of Modi,
then there is a govern-
ment that is in no con-
trol of Yogi in the state.
Jayant Chaudhary also
described the increas-
ing unemployment in
the country as a gift of
the BJP government.
There are vacancies in
the Central Govern-
ment. PM Modi is
scared dances at the
behest of four or five
people. The farmers
continued the coun-
try’s economy in the
lockdown, but still, the
BJP government has
been working to sup-
press the voice of the
farmers. He said will
always raise the voice
of the farmers and will
continue to raise it.

Lucknow: The UP Con-
gress today criticised
the UP minister Suresh
Khanna for making ob-
jectionable comments
against AICC general
secretary Priyanka
Gandhi. The Congress
said that BJP had been
spreading venom in the
society the state gov-
ernment had failed on
all fronts.
The spokesman of
UPCC Ashok Singh said
people had stopped tak-
ing BJP and UP minis-
ters seriously and for
this reason they have
resorted to objectiona-
ble statements against
Priyanka Gandhi, who
has gained ground and
popularity in the state.
He said the BJP was in-
capable of facing chal-
lenges being given by
Priyanka Gandhi.
Claiming that Uttar
Pradesh had been tak-
ing Priyanka Gandhi
very seriously, Ashok
Singh said BJP leaders
and ministers should
take care of themselves.
He said by utter fail-
ure in administration
during the last five
years, the BJP had in-
sulted mandate given to
it by the people. It is for
this reason there was
resentment against BJP
and growing confidence
in Priyanka Gandhi,
Singh claimed. He said
the Congress knew how
to keep promises and
implement them effec-
tively. Singh said the
people had lost faith in
BJP and now it had
been trying to spread
fake claims to mislead
the masses.

a “mismatch” and

and that is divorce.
The nature of the al-

Mincing no words, Yogi said, “Akhilesh be- longs to the party that works for terrorists whereas BJP works for the poor and is whole- heartedly committed towards the welfare of the state and its people including poor, farm- ers, and women.” While addressing the event, he stated, “One is always remembered for his good work. “People should be made aware of the development works done in the last 4.5 years. They should also be told about how our Government saved the lives and livelihood of the people during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is only BJP that works for the interests of the citizen of the country and the state.” The CM also invoked Babasaheb Ambedkar - considered as an iconic figure for the backward classes. He said that Dr Ambedkar emerged as the voice of the down- trodden classes and was revered due to his work towards social justice, equality, Indian values and tradition. First India Bureau Lucknow: “By improv- ing the health infra- structure, our govern- ment has paved the way for the development of the state, as no place can develop fully in ab- sence of medical re- sources. Highlighting the im- proved road infra- structure in UP, Yogi added, “Earlier, it used to take about 3 to 3.5 hours to travel from Gonda to Devipatan, now it takes even less than one hour.” Hitting out at the pre- vious governments for turning the state into a centre of ‘riots and cha- os’, Yogi said that, “none of the previous governments thought of building a medical college here. First India Bureau Lucknow: With Luc- know becoming the most expensive team ever bought in the Indi- anPremierLeague(IPL) history, a lot of heads have turned towards the city as it hogs the lime- light across the word. Even before the first edition started in the year 2008, it was Mum- bai Indians that was bought at approximate- ly Rs 800 crore. And now, with RPSG group grabbing the team from the city of Nawabs for a whopping Rs 7k crore+, th IPL is showing the world why cricket is the second most popular sport on the planet. The BCCI was hoping for a cumulative bid in the range of Rs 10,000 crore for both Ahmedabad and Luc- know but to their sur- prise, earned Rs 7090 crore from Goenka’s RP- SG Group for the Luc- know franchise itself. The two teams were sold off forapproximatelyRs 12k crore. The Lucknow purchase was sure to evoke reactions from the world with former England captain Mi- chael Vaughan saying that while the price for one team is so high, it was clear that the IPL was the most important aspect of Cricket across the world. Australian great Shane Warne too joined Vaughan in stating that no wonder why cricket is the second most viewed on the planet it because of the money involved in the IPL. Meanwhile, BCCI Presi- dent Sourav Ganguly said he wasn’t sur- prised with the way things went in Dubai on Monday. ”We were not surprised actually, this (IPL) is a big brand and we are extremely happy that Indian cricket is moving growing for- ward. That is what is important for us. Con- gratulations to Sanjeev and CVC for being num- ber one and number two but we look at Indi- an cricket and that’s what our job is. However they couldn’t fetch his whereabouts as Gos- avi had escaped from the city, Pune police said. Gosavi is the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) witness in the drug on cruise case involving Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan. On Monday, Gosavi had said that he would surrender to Lucknow Police, following which two teams of Pune po- lice reached Luc- know. However, ac- cording to the Pune police officials, Kiran Gosavi had es- caped from Uttar Pradesh and “is not hiding in Lucknow anymore”. A case was registered against Gosavi with Faraskhana police station of Pune city on May 19, 2018, for allegedly commit- ting fraud by prom- ising a person a job in Malaysia by tak- ing money. However, he neither returned the money nor of- fered the job to the complainant. The accused was booked under sections 419, 420 of the IPC along with relevant sec- tions of the IT Act. They had only a single agenda that is ‘Modi hatao’. The UP BJP unit has defended the minister’s remarks. BJP spokes- person Anila Singh said, “I think (Mr) Up- endra’s statements should not be viewed from a political prism. He was perhaps ex- plaining the feelings of people and women who now have their own gas connections, houses, toilets, bank accounts and whose children are getting a good educa- tion. M Tariq Khan Lucknow: Being the boss of the bosses (figu- ratively speaking) seems to have become a boring burden. What else would ex- plain the fact that the UP IAS association which boasts of having about 700 civil servants as its members is ‘head- less’ for the past six months, ever since the death of its last chief Deepak Trivedi, a 1985-batch IAS officer, in April this year due to Covid. Not only that, the as- sociation is yet to hold its annual event, the IAS Week, in keeping with the resolution adopted on Jan 19, 2013, declaring that the IAS Week will be held every year. Once considered a covetedchairnotforany trappings but for helm- ing the affairs of the powerful fraternity , the titular post has of late lostmuchof itssheenfor reasons of its own mak- ing. The high standard of operational preparedness and capabilities of the Army is praiseworthy. I compliment the excellent synergy between the CAPF/ Police the Army in tackling the menace of terrorism in JK. Anand Sharma @AnandSharmaINC The BJP government remained obdurate and arrogant to deny discussion on Pegasus scandal and derailed the Monsoon Session of Parliament. After the Supreme Court order, they have an egg on their face that calls for honest reflection. TOP TWEETS WHISTLEBLOWER PUTS SOCIAL MEDIA GIANT FACEBOOK INTO TROUBLE acebook, an im- mensely popular so- cial media platform, is in the news for the wrong reasons. Al- though Facebook is not new to controversies, the recent revela- tions by whistleblower Frances Haugen have caused a bigger dent in its reputation. Face- book’s revenues have, however, risen 17 percent to $ 9.2 billion. Although under pressure after calls for his removal, the reve- nue buffer gives Mark Zucker- berg, Facebook’s chief execu- tive, the cushion to brush away the allegations presented by Haugen in British parliament. A lawmaker from Scotland said, “Facebook is failing to prevent harm to children, it’s failing to stop the spread of disinforma- tion, it is failing to stop the spread of hate speech. It does have the power to deal with these issues, it’s just choosing not to.” Indian authorities are also thinking of calling Facebook’s executives to understand how the social media platform’s algo- rithms work. India is one of the biggest victims of hate messag- es which have flooded Facebook virtually unchecked. F n a major setback to the Central gov- ernment the Su- preme Court re- fused to buy its argument about national se- curity concerns and formed a six-member committee of experts to inquire into the Pegasus spyware issue. The committee will be headed by former Supreme Court judge, Justice RV Raveendran and has eminent cyber security experts who are free from prejudices. The panel will in- vestigate if the Pegasus spy- ware was used on phones or other devices of the citizens of India to access stored data, eavesdrop on conversations and intercept information. While passing the order, the Chief Justice of India N. Ramana said, “The State can- not get a free pass every time by raising national security concerns. No omnibus prohi- bition can be called against a judicial review. The Centre should have justified its stand here and not render the court a mute spectator.” The CJI bluntly told the government that it “would not rely on any government agencies” or a government-appointed com- mittee for the probe. The re- mark shows the extent to which the apex court has lost trust in the Centre. At a time when democratic institutions look compro- mised, the order on Pegasus spyware has once again reaf- firmed people’s faith in the Supreme Court. As the Cen- tre was not forthcoming on the truth about Pegasus, the Bench said that surveillance affects people’s rights and freedoms and not just jour- nalists and social activists alone but every citizen ought to be protected against viola- tions of privacy . The Pegasus spyware con- troversy had shaken the very foundation of democracy and the court, which was flooded with PILs, was peo- ple’s only hope. SUPREME COURT WON’T TRUST ANY GOVT AGENCY As the Centre was not forthcoming on the truth about Pegasus, the Bench said that surveillance affects people’s rights and freedoms and not just journalists and social activists alone but every citizen ought to be protected against violations of privacy I GIRLS @ NATIONAL DEFENCEACADEMY n Aug 18, 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that girls should also be inducted into Armed Forces through the premier defence training institute- National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune. With one stroke of pen, the Su- preme Court has done what crores of expenditure on pro- moting Defence Career and catchy advertisements like ‘Do You Have It In You’, ‘Lead A Life Less Ordinary’, ‘Ocean of Opportunities in Indian Navy’ and ‘Touch The Sky With Glory’ could not do in all these years. I am told that there is great enthusiasm amongst the girls to compete for meagre NDA seats avail- able for them but I am certain that the applications from the boys have increased man- ifold. While the veterans and serving officers are sulking over the missed opportuni- ties, the cadets at the NDA are bracing up for impressive performances to win over ‘the hearts and minds’ of the female cadets. “Boys will be Boys”. However, Campus at the ‘Cradle of Excellence’ has got a romantic fragrance. THE VERDICT In a major step towards gen- der equality, on 25 March 2021, the Supreme Court first directed armed forces to grant permanent commis- sion to women entry officers and on 18 Aug 2021, allowed eligible girls to take the ex- amination for admission to National Defence Academy (NDA) scheduled to be held in Nov 2021. While delivering the landmark judgment, the Supreme Court bench ob- served that the mindset has to change, which is not changing at all. The next log- ical step, I suppose, will be to induct them into combat arms of Indian Army. Hope the Court will take note of unique challenges before they pass orders for gender equality in combat arms. WINDS OF CHANGE Girl cadets will be trained at NDA with the aim of grant- ing them Permanent Com- mission, as has been recently indicated by the Armed Forc- es. These decisions are bound to cause some consternation in a tradition bound system but it should be welcomed with caution. The concerns and objections by a segment of the serving and veteran male officers is initial inhibi- tion and a psychological mental block as the NDA has been a purely male bastion for 65 years. Major issues will have to thought through -- for exam- ple, the number of seats open for girls in the initial batch- es; whether there will be separate squadrons created for girls; physical training routine; uniforms and a host of other issues. We should study academies globally to get an idea on how to turn from an all-boys only institu- tion to boys and girls. How- ever, any change takes its due time to be accepted and streamlined. LIFE AT NDA Entry into NDA is a dream come true for young aspir- ants. Entry should therefore be purely on merit and to the most deserving. It must be reserved for only those who meet the stringent standards of the institution. NDA is known for intense outdoor training, indoctrina- tion into disciplined defence lifestyle and simply to say- ‘Making Men out of Boys’. NDA training also includes group games conducted by physical training teams, ac- tivities such as cross-country race, drills, horse riding etc. The unorganized punish- ment regime is also there to physically toughen them up and make them mentally ro- bust. Along with changing mindsets, the nature of offi- cial and unofficial physical punishments will also have to change -- what punish- ments can be given and by whom will also be laid out. PRECEDENCES FROM OTA, CHENNAI The Officers Training Acade- my(OTA)Chennai, originally only a men’s training institu- tion, commenced training women in 1992 to be officers through the Short Service route, so precedence does ex- ist about training and logis- tics for girl cadets. There is no reason why it cannot eventu- ally happen at NDA also. Learning from the experi- ences at the OTA which trains both men and women officers, it can be said with pride that female cadets have often proved themselves on equal terms and won the cov- eted ‘Sword of Honour’ in open competition against their male counterparts. CONCLUSION Change is the spice of life. Adapting to changing societal norms is the key to keeping yourself relevant and battle worthy . The armed forces also needtogrowupwithtimeand treat women as equally com- petent officers. However, any change takes its due time to be accepted and streamlined. Any change like this needs in- depth deliberation, since it will have a long-term impact onthearmedforces.TheNDA gates will open a plethora of new horizons and break the stereotypes. Let the girl ca- dets at NDA be the harbingers of change. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL O Girl cadets will be trained at NDA with the aim of granting them Permanent Commission, as has been recently indicated by the Armed Forces. These decisions are bound to cause some consternation in a tradition bound system but it should be welcomed with caution The armed forces also need to grow up with time and treat women as equally competent officers. However, any change takes its due time to be accepted and streamlined MAJ GEN CP SINGH, RETD The writer is a scholar soldier accredited with MA, MSc, LLB, MBA, M Phil (Def Mgt) and M Phil (International Strategic Affairs)

The Sangh has said that it does not want any kind of community tension at this time. Due to this, electoral losses have also been feared. It is notewor- thy here that mainly these groups are pro- testing against the three agricultural laws made by the central government. Farmers of Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh are ada- mant that the govern- ment should repeal all three laws and a way is being sought to reduce this tension without re- pealing the law. Is Sangh fearful of resentment of Sikhs Jats? IN THE COURTYARD New Delhi: Over 11 crore people who have taken the first shot of COVID-19 vaccine have not got themselves jabbed with the second dose even after the ex- piry of the prescribed interval, according to govt data. The data showed that over 3.92 cr beneficiaries are more than six weeks overdue for their second dose, around 1.57 cr are up to four to six weeks late, and more than 1.50 cr are up to two to four weeks overdue for their second shot of either Covishield or Covaxin. —PTI 2nd vax dose overdue for 11 cr people: Data Anita Hada New Delhi: Will the Congress party be the only ‘vote-cutting’ par- ty in Uttar Pradesh? Will Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘activism’ harm Samajwadi Party and benefit the BJP? If political experts are to be believed, the pros- pects of Congress in upcoming Assembly polls are being thought of within this range. BJP leaders are happy that Priyanka is active and doing politics, then she will get anti-govern- ment vote divided. That’s why many Congress leaders sin- cerely want there should be some kind of coordination with SP so that anti-government vote is not divided. But no one has seen from point of view that Con- gress can make a dent in BJP’s core votes. BJP’s core vote in UP is Brahmin, non Yadav OBC and non Jatav backward classes. In this Brahmins are angry for many rea- sons. But BJP is confi- dent thinking Brahmin voters will not opt for any other party as they have no option. BSP is not in fight and Brahmins do not vote for SP. That’s why they will have to vote for the BJP with a bang. Priyanka can pro- vide an alternative to that vote. Whatever vote the Congress gets will be the vote of the BJP. Similarly, Congress has made a Dalit Chief Minister in Punjab, so that it can make a dent in the non-Jatav Dalit vote as well. Congress has made the Chief Minister of Chhattis- garh as senior observer of UP. He hails from OBC Kurmi caste and this aspect will also be helpful to the Congress. In this way, if the Congress makes some dent in SP’s Muslim vote, it will also make a dent in BJP’s upper caste, non-Yadav OBC and non-Jatav Dalit votes. Due to the presence of Priyanka, the women votes will go to the Con- gress and it will also be a big loss for the BJP. Will Congress only cut votes in UP? Priyanka Gandhi M Sharma New Delhi: The elec- tionof thenationalpres- ident of the Congress party will be held in August-September next year, but it was decided in the meeting of the Congress Working Com- mittee on Saturday that Rahul Gandhi would be- come President again. Senior party leaders proposed his name and he also said that he would consider it. Even G-23 leaders have sup- ported Rahul’s name. So now the possibility is almost completely gone that any leader will challenge Rahul in party President elec- tion. Earlier it seemed that one of the rebel Con- gress leaders could float their nomina- tion for the post, but that is highly unlikely now. After what happened in CWC, no leader, in his complete senses, will go down to contest elections against any member of Gandhi fam- ily. It was possible that someone would have contested the election if Rahul had played the stakes of getting some other President. But by fighting against Rahul, one does not want to be- come Jitendra Prasad. Prasad had challenged Sonia in 2000 and lost badly . However, Sharad Pawar gave a tough fight to previous party President Sitaram Kes- ari. So, if there was any other leader, there would have been a situ- ation of elections, but there would be no such chance in front of Ra- hul. The way he was elected unopposed in 2017 he will be elected in 2022 as well. All the veteran leaders who raised questions on functioning of Con- gress high command have surrendered. Al- though the interest of many satraps who have left the Congress is in fact that Rahul should be chal- lenged, but there is no one to challenge him. No ‘leadership’ to challenge Rahul Gandhi’s ‘leadership’ Rahul Gandhi Sharat K Verma Chandigarh: The real good news for the Con- gress party in Punjab is that former CM Captain Amarinder Singh is forming a separate par- ty and the BJP will align with him. Captain has tried his hand in past to form a party and returned to Congress after failing miserably . However, Manpreet Badal’s history in Pun- jab is likely to be repeat- ed with Captain’s an- nouncement of contest- ing polls, as a separate party. Manpreet had contested assembly polls in 2012 by forming his own party and for the first time after near- ly four and a half dec- ades, paved way for a party to return to power for second time in a row. Manpreet is the neph- ew of Parkash Singh Badal, the longest serv- ing CM of Punjab, and was Finance Minister in Badal government formed in 2007. But he knew that command of Akali Dal was to be in hands of Sukhbir Bad- al. So by rebelling against his uncle, he formed Punjab People’s Party and contested polls in 2012. Akali Dal got advantage of this as anti-govt votes went to him and despite de- crease in votes, Akali Dal won for the second time in a row. Now, it seems Cap- tain will also work on same lines. With Captain going with BJP, anti-govern- ment votes will surely go to their combined ac- count. Congress will benefit from this as the main contest of Congress in Punjab is with AAP and SAD. If anti-govt vote was polarised towards either of these parties, then Congress would have suffered. Second thing is that Captain has no ‘politi- cal capital’ other than Jat Sikh vote and this vote is also the ‘capital’ of SAD and a part of the same vote has been with AAP as well! Will Manpreet Badal’s history be repeated in Punjab through Amarinder? Manpreet Badal RSS Chief, Mohan Bhagwat

INDIAEXPRESSESCONCERN OVER CHINA’S NEW LAND BOUNDARY LAW China's unilateral decision to bring about legislation which can have an implication on our existing bilateral arrangements on border management as well as on the boundary question is of concern to us. The passage of this new law (China's Land Boundary Law) does not in our view confer any legitimacy to the so-called China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement of 1963 which the GoI has consistently maintained is illegal and invalid agreement. —ARINDAM BAGCHI, Official spokesperson MEA WHEN WAS THIS LAW PROPOSED? In March 2021, the law was first proposed. Forces of India and China have been in a standoff since last April-May following clashes along the LAC. The assembly elections will tell us who won, who lost and who will go on to become the next Chief Minister of the state and since the posting of the officers will also be somewhat dependent on who comes to power, the result of the elections is an interesting topic of discussion among the officers.
