lobal warming has

damaged due to fire. The 40 de-

higher than the pre-industrial
era temperatures. A severe heat
wave is torching parts of West-
ern Europe with forest fires rag-

wave deaths were also reported
from parts of Europe along with
the loss of green cover over

The least unprepared for this

Worse, the British Met office
warned that this phenomenon

D
Why Sri Lanka Imploded
When Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa family returned to power in 2019, it was riding a
wave of support that it sought to sustain with popular but ill-advised economic
handouts. By definition, unsustainable policies eventually run into a wall
s Sri Lanka’s economy unrav-
els before our eyes, one must
ask how this could happen in
a country that is historically
known for its high standard
of living and stable economy
.
Sri Lanka’s achievements go
back decades, giving it a per
capita GDP that is 70% high-
er than India’s, and a life ex-
pectancy at birth of 77 years,
compared to 73, 70, and 67, in
Bangladesh, India, and Paki-
stan, respectively
.
But now, Sri Lanka’s econ-
omy is in free fall. The proxi-
mate causes of the crisis are
clear enough. Problems
stemming from internation-
al factors such as COVID-19
and Russia’s war in Ukraine
were exacerbated by Sri Lan-
ka’s own policy mistakes. In
2019, President Gotabaya Ra-
japaksa (who has now fled
the country) announced a
round of mindless tax cuts,
depriving the state of sorely
needed revenue. Then, in
2021, his government abrupt-
ly banned imports of chemi-
cal fertilizer and pesticides.
While the aim of the policy
was to stall foreign-exchange
outflows, the main result
was a dramatic reduction in
domestic food production,
leading to acute food short-
ages this year.
The coup de grâce was the
government’s ongoing effort
to keep the Sri Lankan rupee
artificially strong. Techni-
cally, Sri Lanka uses a “soft
peg”: Rather than being fixed
by government diktat, the
rupee-to-dollar exchange rate
is allowed to float, albeit with
occasional interventions by
the central bank (buying and
selling dollars) to prevent ex-
cessive fluctuations.
But charting the rupee-to-
dollar exchange rate shows
that the country’s soft peg is
a misnomer. For years, the
exchange rate remained flat,
roughly between 175 to 200
rupees to the dollar because,
as economist Noah Smith ex-
plains, the Sri Lankan cen-
tral bank was regularly sell-
ing dollars to prop up the
rupee’s value. Eventually,
this longstanding interven-
tion ended the only way that
it could: starting around
April of this year, the rupee
began depreciating sharply.
Within months, the exchange
rate had fallen to 350 rupees
to the dollar, and the central
bank’s dollar reserves had all
but vanished.
Sri Lanka defaulted on its
foreign debt in May. We now
know that, rather than turn-
ing to the International Mon-
etary Fund, whose rescue
programs are conditional on
tough policy reforms, it ap-
proached China for a fresh
loan when its coffers were ap-
proaching empty. But this
merely increased its debt by
another $3 billion and en-
sured that its inevitable cri-
sis would be even bigger
when it eventually arrived.
China’s strategy vis-à-vis
Sri Lanka (and other develop-
ing countries, like Ethiopia)
echoes the approach taken
both by earlier colonial pow-
ers and by rural moneylend-
ers in developing countries.
As Amit Bhaduri showed in a
classic 1977 paper in the Cam-
bridge Journal of Econom-
ics, rural informal money-
lenders typically do not wor-
ry about the borrower de-
faulting; rather, they worry
about the borrower not de-
faulting, because then they
cannot turn a bigger profit by
confiscating his collateral
(usually his land).
Consider Hambantota
Port, the pet project of Mahi-
nda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s
president between 2005 and
2015 (and Gotabaya Raja-
paksa’s brother). Funded
largely with Chinese money,
the port opened in 2010 on
Mahinda’s birthday. But
when Sri Lanka later failed
to repay the debt, this “gift”
became collateral to be con-
fiscated. China now has a 99-
year lease on the port.
How did a country with a
longstanding reputation for
maturity make so many mis-
takes? The short answer is
that Sri Lanka’s politics
sowed the seeds for today’s
economic crisis. The Raja-
paksa-led government be-
came increasingly authori-
tarian after defeating the
Liberation Tigers of Tamil
Eelam and ending Sri Lan-
ka’s decades-long civil war in
2009. It eroded the country’s
democratic institutions, per-
secuted minorities, and
waved away accusations of
war crimes.

SC TO TAKE UP

New Delhi: All disputes
arising from the elec-

Vice President can
only be inquired and
decided by Supreme
Court, the Delhi HC has
said. Justice Sanjeev

said the plea was not

New Delhi: The Delhi

ing the decision of its

the plea seeking infor-

SC collegium meeting
in 2018 concerning the
elevation of judges to

New Delhi: The Delhi HC has dismissed a plea by
former Lt Gen Tejinder Singh challenging the framing
of charges against him for allegedly offering a bribe
to then Army Chief VK Singh in connection with the
Tatra-all terrain vehicles. Justice Purushaindra Kumar
Kaurav said the trial court order does not call for any
interference and dismissed Tejinder’s revision petition
challenging the trial court’s August 2, 2019 order fram-
ing charges against him. So far as the arguments with
respect to various omissions and contradictions in the
case of the prosecution are concerned, the same are
the subject matter of trial and the present case cannot
be said to be a case of no material. “It is made clear
that the observations made in this judgement are only
for the purpose of deciding the issue of the legality of
the order framing charge,” the court said.
New Delhi: A Supreme Court bench led by CJI NV

Jaipur: The scope of
drug testing will in-
crease in the state to
clamp down on the ma-
fia. After a long wait of
about 10 years, now
drug labs are starting
in Jodhpur, Udaipur
and Bikaner in the first
week of August.
Sunil Sharma, Com-
missioner, Food Safety

self took over com-
mand of monitoring
setting of these labs.
After the introduction
of these three labs,
there will be a total of
four labs in state. Three
drug labs have been de-
veloped at a cost of
about Rs 20 crore.
Due to lack of drug
testing across the coun-
try, the booming busi-
ness of fake and sub-

cine is flourishing.

new drug testing labs in

is operated in Jaipur,

Rajendra Chhabra
Jaipur: A million dollar
question, who will be ap-
pointed as the Secretary
to Vice-President, has
perplexed the state’s bu-
reaucracy and has be-
come a hot topic of dis-
cussion. It is assured
thatJagdeepDhankhar
willtakeoverthemantle
in August and then he
will have to appoint a
Secretary for himself.
It is believed that a
senior IAS officer, re-
tired or serving, will be
given the opportunity
. A
native of Rajasthan,
Jagdeep Dhankhar has
worked in Uttar
Pradesh, Haryana and
Delhi as well and he has
immenseconnectionsin
all the places. Therefore,
he can appoint a Secre-
tary for himself from
any of these states.
However, word is that
some officer from Ra-
jasthan,whowouldhave
had experience of work-
ing in Delhi, would be
given preference. The
namesthataredoingthe
rounds also features the
name of an IAS, who is
about to retire. Sources
claim that this officer
has had more than two
decade long association
with Dhankhar. Moreo-
ver, this IAS along with
his wife, had spent two
days in West Bengal Raj
Bhawan at Kolkata.
The other IAS from
Rajasthan is on central
deputation, but it is said
that he is not too happy
with the present assign-
ment. For this IAS, his
friends in Delhi are lob-
bying proactively.
Dhankhar himself is
extremely talented and
a hard taskmaster and
thus, it is natural that
he will appoint a Secre-
tary, who can walk
shoulder to shoulder
with him. Although
there are half a dozen
officers in the race.
Notably, when Late
Bhairon Singh Shekha-
wat was the Vice Presi-
dent, at that time, Ra-
jasthan cadre retired
IAS Anil Kumar was his
Secretary and second
retired officer from
state, KL Kochar, was
his OSD.
It is also an interest-
ing coincidence that the
responsibility of Lok
Sabha Speaker Om Bir-
la’s office is also in
hands of two Rajasthan-
based officers, IAS Sid-
dharth Mahajan and
RPS Rajeev Dutta.
Will ‘Vice-President’ Dhankhar appoint an
‘old friend’ Raj cadre IAS as his Secretary ?
Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok
Gehlot has approved the proposal
to construct a new building of 125
residential capacity by expanding
the Mentally Depressed Women and
Child Welfare Rehabilitation Home
located at Jamdoli in Jaipur. For the
construction of this new building,
financial approval of Rs 7.85 crore
has also been given by CM Gehlot.
With the approval, 4 units of 12
boys and 5 units for 16 boys will
be constructed on the ground floor
in the proposed building, in which
there will be provision for 24 hours
medical facility and nursing care
along with care taker and neces-
sary facilities. 4 airy courtyards
for sports for physical and mental
development of children. Adminis-
trative room and other necessary
facilities will be constructed on the
first floor. The construction will be
done keeping in mind the rules rec-
ommended by the National Trust of
Persons with Disabilities. The build-
ing will also have a large dining hall
with kitchen, store and room for
occupational therapy.
It is to be mentioned that at present
a resettlement home of 250 capac-
ity is operating in Jamdoli in which
about 340 residents are benefiting
from the facility. But due to the
transfer of residents from other
institutions in this resettlement
home, the pressure of admission
remains. In view of this need, the
CM has taken a sensitive decision.

New Delhi: With mur-
murs of a change of
command in Rajasthan
PCC doing the rounds,
now knowledgeable
sources from Delhi and
Jaipur have said that
PCC chief Govind Sin-
gh Dotasra may be ‘re-
placed’ sooner than
later. Word in the ‘rel-
evant party circles’ is
that minister BD Kalla
may be the new PCC
chief in place of Do-
tasra. However, it is not
just the Congress that
will undergo a change,
rather the BJP too may
tread on Congress’
path as it is being said
that the saffron party’s
state president may
also be changed. How-
ever, the similarities in
BJP and Congress
would be that Brahmin
face can be brought for-
ward in both the par-
ties. So it is believed
that new state presi-
dents of both the par-
ties can be announced
anytime.

Jaipur: Kedias- The
Kothi, a well-known pro-
ject of the city’s re-
nowned builder Kedia
Group, has now come on
the “radar” of the Spe-
cial Operations Group
(SOG). The SOG will
now investigate the seri-
ous allegations against
the Kedia Group of for-
cibly occupying the land
of the tenants with the
help of the local police.
Kedia’s The Kothi
project is being devel-
oped by Kedia Group in
village Sirsi and
Kishorepuracharan in
Jaipur. The Jaipur De-
velopment Authority
has approved this pro-
ject under Chief Minis-
ter Jan Awas Yojana,
but this project has
been in the news due to
several allegations in-
cluding forcible en-
croachment on the land
of the tenants. Now
SOG will investigate
this matter. Due to this,
SOG has called for the
entire files of the case
from the JDA.
There are several se-
rious allegations
against Kedia Group in
the case wherein it has
been said that with the
help of police and local
administration, 18
bighas of land of the
tenants is being forcibly
occupied and construct-
ed upon. Bouncers sent
by Kedia Group to take
possession of the land
beat up the elderly,
women and children of
the tenant family. Fur-
thermore, it is alleged
that due to the influence
of Kedia Group, the lo-
cal police of the area
registeredacaseagainst
the tenants for obstruct-
ing the work of the state
and that the project of-
fice has been built on
the land of Khasra num-
ber 308, which is being
said to be registered in
the name of Talai Wale
Bhomia ji. Additionally
,
it is also alleged that de-
spite the stay of the sub-
divisional officer on a
part of the land, the con-
struction activity is go-
ing on indiscriminately
and about 29 bighas of
land is being construct-
ed upon without the ap-
proval of JDA.
SOG has taken this
matter of real estate
very seriously due to
these serious allega-
tions. The matter came
under SOG’s radar after
a case was registered on
behalf of the cultivator
Yadav family in the
Kardhani police station
area regarding this mat-
ter. In the registered
case, there were allega-
tions of public en-
croachment on the land
of the cultivators with
the help of the police.
The investigation of the
case was handed over to
the Kalwar police sta-
tion. Now, this same
matter will be investi-
gated by SOG.
There is a furore in
the real estate sector
due to the request of
the Jaipur Develop-
ment Authority’s file
for the approval of this
project approved under
the Chief Minister’s
Jan Awas Yojana. What
role did the police or
JDA officer play in the
case, will come to the
fore in the investiga-
tion of the SOG.

Marvellous Mahima:
A rising star
The spectacular diva from Jaipur spoke
to City First about her journey as a
model. She also shared how
important it is to work hard in
the modelling world
tyle is something that
expresses who you are
in your way because
the joy of fashion is
also an art. City First
spoke to one such won-
derful soul Mahima
Sharma who believes that be-
ing genuine is the true expres-
sion of beauty
. Here are some
excerpts of that tete-a-tete.
Describe yourself for us. What
are the challenges that you
faced in the fashion industry?
My name is Mahima Sharma
and I am from the Pink City
i.e. Jaipur, Rajasthan. I always
dreamt of being a supermodel
from a very young age. There-
fore, I participated in Elite
Miss Rajasthan to pursue my
dreams and it allowed me to
fulfil my dreams as a model.
Being a government employee,
I found it very difficult to join
this industry. However, I am
thankful to my family and
friends who supported me. I
have devoted three years to
transforming myself into a
model. I am still learning
about the fashion industry. I
have given my heart and soul
to it to become a supermodel.
What inspired you to get into
the world of modelling?
I decided to be a model and no
one inspired me to join this
industry. However, I gained
many supporters, who in-
spired and supported me in
every step, after I joined this
industry
. I would like to thank
Gaurav Gaur for mentoring
me throughout this journey
.
Talk to us about the most
memorable moments in
your career.
There have been many memo-
rable moments in this jour-
ney
. One of the best moments
that I witnessed was when I
was awarded the best ramp
walk model in Rajasthan. I
am a government employee so
I do not get enough time to
pursue my dreams in model-
ling. Therefore, I have taken
a long leave to open my agen-
cy titled Elite Modeling School
to teach about modelling.
Any message for the
upcoming models?
I would like to share with the
upcoming models that it is a
wonderful industry and all
you need is an easy-going ap-
proach with a will to go the
extra mile. A genuine person
is more likely to be rebooked
for other shoots. Always re-
member that you are a part of
a team hence coordinate with
your team members well. You
will have to pull your weight
because nobody likes high-
maintenance divas.

Worse, the British Met office warned that this phenomenon could repeat every three years. A UN report on climate change warned that the world is on a “fast track” to disaster. That should not distract us from the values and simplici- ty that Draupadi Murmu will bring to the high office. That she is not the one to compro- mise on her righteousness is evident from her clean track record as a politician and as a governor despite her person- al and financial hardships. She will help bring tribals closer to the mainstream and ensure that they get social and economic uplift. Murmu’s election has a les- son for the disunited Opposi- tion which did not vote for him. Some of the parties like theCongressmusthavefound to their dismay that many of their members were not in agreement with the anti-Mur- mu and pro-Yashwant Sinha stand and voted for the for- mer.Murmu’sconvincingvic- tory makes the efforts for Op- position unity as no more than chasing a mirage. It would have been more grace- ful for them to have backed Murmu even if she was a BJP candidate. The Opposition parties, mainly the Congress and TMC, have missed the larger point of moving closer to tribals when Lok Sabha elections are close. MURMU’S VICTORY IS OPPN’S LOSS Draupadi Murmu is not the one to compromise on her righteousness is evident from her clean track record as a politician and as a governor despite her personal financial hardships D Why Sri Lanka Imploded When Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa family returned to power in 2019, it was riding a wave of support that it sought to sustain with popular but ill-advised economic handouts. By definition, unsustainable policies eventually run into a wall s Sri Lanka’s economy unrav- els before our eyes, one must ask how this could happen in a country that is historically known for its high standard of living and stable economy . Sri Lanka’s achievements go back decades, giving it a per capita GDP that is 70% high- er than India’s, and a life ex- pectancy at birth of 77 years, compared to 73, 70, and 67, in Bangladesh, India, and Paki- stan, respectively . But now, Sri Lanka’s econ- omy is in free fall. The proxi- mate causes of the crisis are clear enough. Problems stemming from internation- al factors such as COVID-19 and Russia’s war in Ukraine were exacerbated by Sri Lan- ka’s own policy mistakes. In 2019, President Gotabaya Ra- japaksa (who has now fled the country) announced a round of mindless tax cuts, depriving the state of sorely needed revenue. Then, in 2021, his government abrupt- ly banned imports of chemi- cal fertilizer and pesticides. While the aim of the policy was to stall foreign-exchange outflows, the main result was a dramatic reduction in domestic food production, leading to acute food short- ages this year. The coup de grâce was the government’s ongoing effort to keep the Sri Lankan rupee artificially strong. Techni- cally, Sri Lanka uses a “soft peg”: Rather than being fixed by government diktat, the rupee-to-dollar exchange rate is allowed to float, albeit with occasional interventions by the central bank (buying and selling dollars) to prevent ex- cessive fluctuations. But charting the rupee-to- dollar exchange rate shows that the country’s soft peg is a misnomer. For years, the exchange rate remained flat, roughly between 175 to 200 rupees to the dollar because, as economist Noah Smith ex- plains, the Sri Lankan cen- tral bank was regularly sell- ing dollars to prop up the rupee’s value. Eventually, this longstanding interven- tion ended the only way that it could: starting around April of this year, the rupee began depreciating sharply. Within months, the exchange rate had fallen to 350 rupees to the dollar, and the central bank’s dollar reserves had all but vanished. Sri Lanka defaulted on its foreign debt in May. We now know that, rather than turn- ing to the International Mon- etary Fund, whose rescue programs are conditional on tough policy reforms, it ap- proached China for a fresh loan when its coffers were ap- proaching empty. But this merely increased its debt by another $3 billion and en- sured that its inevitable cri- sis would be even bigger when it eventually arrived. China’s strategy vis-à-vis Sri Lanka (and other develop- ing countries, like Ethiopia) echoes the approach taken both by earlier colonial pow- ers and by rural moneylend- ers in developing countries. As Amit Bhaduri showed in a classic 1977 paper in the Cam- bridge Journal of Econom- ics, rural informal money- lenders typically do not wor- ry about the borrower de- faulting; rather, they worry about the borrower not de- faulting, because then they cannot turn a bigger profit by confiscating his collateral (usually his land). Consider Hambantota Port, the pet project of Mahi- nda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s president between 2005 and 2015 (and Gotabaya Raja- paksa’s brother). Funded largely with Chinese money, the port opened in 2010 on Mahinda’s birthday. But when Sri Lanka later failed to repay the debt, this “gift” became collateral to be con- fiscated. China now has a 99- year lease on the port. How did a country with a longstanding reputation for maturity make so many mis- takes? The short answer is that Sri Lanka’s politics sowed the seeds for today’s economic crisis. The Raja- paksa-led government be- came increasingly authori- tarian after defeating the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and ending Sri Lan- ka’s decades-long civil war in 2009. It eroded the country’s democratic institutions, per- secuted minorities, and waved away accusations of war crimes. So far as the arguments with respect to various omissions and contradictions in the case of the prosecution are concerned, the same are the subject matter of trial and the present case cannot be said to be a case of no material. “It is made clear that the observations made in this judgement are only for the purpose of deciding the issue of the legality of the order framing charge,” the court said. • 9. First India Bureau Jaipur: BJP has man- agedtobreakintothefort of CM Ashok Gehlot in the presidential election as two MLAs have cross- voted for NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu. The names of the MLAs haven’t been disclosed yet, but doubts are being raisedonanindependent and an ally . On the other hand, the MLAs may have got less votes, but in termsof votevalue,Mur- mu has been ahead from Rajasthan. Droupadi Murmu, who won the Presidentialelection, has got the votes of 75 MLAs from Rajasthan while op- position’s candidate Yashwant Sinha got 123 votes. Cong MLA Bhan- warlal Sharma and BTP MLA Rajkumar Roth didn’t vote as a total of 198 MLAs voted out of 200. After Shobharani’s removal, BJP and RLP had 73 votes, but instead the candidate got 75. Accordingtothepoliti- cal math, Sinha should have got 125 votes, but in- stead he got 123. No one canknowwhichMLAdid cross voting because of poll secrecy . Sinha got value of votes of MLAs 15,867 and votes of 6 MPs at 4,200, both of which combined have a vote value of 20,067, which is 9,675 less than Murmu. Despite the drag, Gehlot didn’t let numbers game be disturbed much. A truly kind person is one who loves people more than they deserve. —Dr Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO Editor-in-Chief, First India JAIPUR | SATURDAY, JULY 23, 2022 www.firstindia.co.in I https://firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia 08 2NDFRONT POSTAL REG NO. JPC/004/2022-24 Rajendra Chhabra Jaipur: A million dollar question, who will be ap- pointed as the Secretary to Vice-President, has perplexed the state’s bu- reaucracy and has be- come a hot topic of dis- cussion. It is assured thatJagdeepDhankhar willtakeoverthemantle in August and then he will have to appoint a Secretary for himself. It is believed that a senior IAS officer, re- tired or serving, will be given the opportunity . A native of Rajasthan, Jagdeep Dhankhar has worked in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi as well and he has immenseconnectionsin all the places. Therefore, he can appoint a Secre- tary for himself from any of these states. However, word is that some officer from Ra- jasthan, whowouldhave had experience of work- ing in Delhi, would be given preference. The namesthataredoingthe rounds also features the name of an IAS, who is about to retire. Sources claim that this officer has had more than two decade long association with Dhankhar. Moreo- ver, this IAS along with his wife, had spent two days in West Bengal Raj Bhawan at Kolkata. The other IAS from Rajasthan is on central deputation, but it is said that he is not too happy with the present assign- ment. For this IAS, his friends in Delhi are lob- bying proactively. Dhankhar himself is extremely talented and a hard taskmaster and thus, it is natural that he will appoint a Secre- tary, who can walk shoulder to shoulder with him. Although there are half a dozen officers in the race. Notably, when Late Bhairon Singh Shekha- wat was the Vice Presi- dent, at that time, Ra- jasthan cadre retired IAS Anil Kumar was his Secretary and second retired officer from state, KL Kochar, was his OSD. It is also an interest- ing coincidence that the responsibility of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Bir- la’s office is also in hands of two Rajasthan- based officers, IAS Sid- dharth Mahajan and RPS Rajeev Dutta. Will ‘Vice-President’ Dhankhar appoint an ‘old friend’ Raj cadre IAS as his Secretary ? Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has approved the proposal to construct a new building of 125 residential capacity by expanding the Mentally Depressed Women and Child Welfare Rehabilitation Home located at Jamdoli in Jaipur. For the construction of this new building, financial approval of Rs 7.85 crore has also been given by CM Gehlot. With the approval, 4 units of 12 boys and 5 units for 16 boys will be constructed on the ground floor in the proposed building, in which there will be provision for 24 hours medical facility and nursing care along with care taker and neces- sary facilities. 4 airy courtyards for sports for physical and mental development of children. Adminis- trative room and other necessary facilities will be constructed on the first floor. The construction will be done keeping in mind the rules rec- ommended by the National Trust of Persons with Disabilities. The build- ing will also have a large dining hall with kitchen, store and room for occupational therapy. It is to be mentioned that at present a resettlement home of 250 capac- ity is operating in Jamdoli in which about 340 residents are benefiting from the facility. But due to the transfer of residents from other institutions in this resettlement home, the pressure of admission remains. In view of this need, the CM has taken a sensitive decision. CM APPROVES `14.37 CRORE FOR BAR COUNCIL OF RAJ IN JODHPUR First India Bureau Jaipur: Chief Minis- ter Ashok Gehlot has approved a proposal of Rs.14.37 crore for the construction of a new building of Bar Coun- cil of Rajasthan in the premises of Rajasthan High Court at Jodh- pur. With this approv- al, an auditorium, strong room, electrical room and staff room etc. will be construct- ed on the ground floor along with rooms of the secretary and of- fice bearers and other facilities of the Bar Council will be devel- oped. On its first and second floors, council chairman, vice chair- man’s room, meeting hall, library, driver dormitory, multipur- pose hall and office etc. will be construct- ed. The building will be constructed by the Rajasthan State Road Development and Con- struction Corporation (RSRDC). In budget of 2022-23, a financial provision of Rs 8.53 cr was announced. Aditi Nagar New Delhi: With mur- murs of a change of command in Rajasthan PCC doing the rounds, now knowledgeable sources from Delhi and Jaipur have said that PCC chief Govind Sin- gh Dotasra may be ‘re- placed’ sooner than later. Word in the ‘rel- evant party circles’ is that minister BD Kalla may be the new PCC chief in place of Do- tasra. However, it is not just the Congress that will undergo a change, rather the BJP too may tread on Congress’ path as it is being said that the saffron party’s state president may also be changed. How- ever, the similarities in BJP and Congress would be that Brahmin face can be brought for- ward in both the par- ties. So it is believed that new state presi- dents of both the par- ties can be announced anytime. First India Bureau Jaipur: Kedias- The Kothi, a well-known pro- ject of the city’s re- nowned builder Kedia Group, has now come on the “radar” of the Spe- cial Operations Group (SOG). The SOG will now investigate the seri- ous allegations against the Kedia Group of for- cibly occupying the land of the tenants with the help of the local police. Kedia’s The Kothi project is being devel- oped by Kedia Group in village Sirsi and Kishorepuracharan in Jaipur. The Jaipur De- velopment Authority has approved this pro- ject under Chief Minis- ter Jan Awas Yojana, but this project has been in the news due to several allegations in- cluding forcible en- croachment on the land of the tenants. Now SOG will investigate this matter. Due to this, SOG has called for the entire files of the case from the JDA. There are several se- rious allegations against Kedia Group in the case wherein it has been said that with the help of police and local administration, 18 bighas of land of the tenants is being forcibly occupied and construct- ed upon. Bouncers sent by Kedia Group to take possession of the land beat up the elderly, women and children of the tenant family. Fur- thermore, it is alleged that due to the influence of Kedia Group, the lo- cal police of the area registeredacaseagainst the tenants for obstruct- ing the work of the state and that the project of- fice has been built on the land of Khasra num- ber 308, which is being said to be registered in the name of Talai Wale Bhomia ji. Additionally , it is also alleged that de- spite the stay of the sub- divisional officer on a part of the land, the con- struction activity is go- ing on indiscriminately and about 29 bighas of land is being construct- ed upon without the ap- proval of JDA. SOG has taken this matter of real estate very seriously due to these serious allega- tions. The matter came under SOG’s radar after a case was registered on behalf of the cultivator Yadav family in the Kardhani police station area regarding this mat- ter. In the registered case, there were allega- tions of public en- croachment on the land of the cultivators with the help of the police. The investigation of the case was handed over to the Kalwar police sta- tion. Now, this same matter will be investi- gated by SOG. There is a furore in the real estate sector due to the request of the Jaipur Develop- ment Authority’s file for the approval of this project approved under the Chief Minister’s Jan Awas Yojana. What role did the police or JDA officer play in the case, will come to the fore in the investiga- tion of the SOG. After 3...
