Pune: Various Hindut-
va bodies under the ae-
gis of Sakal Hindu Sa-
maj on Sunday took out
a protest march in Ma-
harashtra’s Pune city
against “love jihad”, il-
legal conversions and
cow slaughter.
The ‘Hindu Jan Ak-
rosh Morcha’ started at
the historical Lal Ma-
hal and culminated at
the statue of Chhatra-
pati Sambhaji Maharaj
in Deccan area, a dis-
tance of about 5 km.
The morcha organis-
ers demanded the death
anniversaryof Chhatra-
pati Sambhaji Maharaj,
eldest son of Chhatra-
pati Shivaji Maharaj, be
declared as ‘Balidan
Din’ (Martyr’s Day).
Sambhaji Maharaj was
tortured to death on the
orders of Mughal em-
peror Aurangazeb.
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Brihan-
mumbai Municipal
Corporation has said
the allegation of a Rs
100 crore scam in set-
ting up of jumbo COV-
ID-19 centres is “base-
less” as only Rs 33.13
crore has been spent on
providing manpower at
two such facilities in
the city
.
Also, the matter of
verification whether
the partnership deed,
stamp paper for the con-
tract with a hospital
management services
company is fake is con-
cerned with Registra-
tion and Controller of
Stamps Department
and does not fall under
the BMC’s purview.
Therefore, it is totally
wrong to accuse munici-
pal administration in
this regard, BMC chief
Iqbal Singh Chahal said.
On the issue of differ-
ent dates mentioned on
the stamp paper and the
last page of the partner-
ship deed, the contrac-
tor stated before an in-
quiry committee of the
BMC that this was an
“inadvertent typo-
graphical error”, the
statement said.
Chahal had on Janu-
ary 16 recorded his
statement with the En-
forcement Directorate
in connection with the
alleged irregularities in
award of contracts for
health facilities during
the pandemic, and later
said jumbo COVID-19
care centres were set up
on the Maharashtra
government’s orders.
No scam in setup of Covid centres: Chahal Hindu organization holds
morcha on ‘Love Jihad’
` 33.13 crore spent for providing
manpower at centres, so allegation of
` 100 cr scam is baseless,” Chahal said

SUPREME COURT DISCLOSURE TRIGGERS
INTELLIGENCE CONCERNS: SOURCES
The disclosure of the SC judges' back-and-forth with the
central govt over the appointment of judges, including
the objections raised by intelligence agencies, has led to
disquiet in the security establishment. It's been a practice not
to make the objections public, and keep the confidentiality of
intelligence agencies who scrutinise prospective candidates
for the posts of the higher judiciary — both in HC and SC. A
final call will be taken to sensitise the CJI about this practice,
which has been followed since Independence, sources said.

No dust storms but cooler
days ahead for Mumbai
First India Bureau
Mumbai: According to
meteorologists, temper-
ature in Mumbai city is
likely to dip in the com-
ing days. This will hap-
pen owing to the intense
effect of the twin West-
ern Disturbances (WDs)
that are likely to affect
the Western Himalayan
Region from January 23.
However, in good
news, there will not be
any dust storms, unlike
last year, when a brown
spellwascastoverMum-
bai.Weatherchangesare
expected to be witnessed
across the counter, be-
cause of the twin WDs.
“Last year, the WD
diverted already pre-
sent dust storms to-
wards Mumbai, which
caused poor air quality
in the city and its ad-
joining areas. However,
that’s not the case this
time,” clarified Gufran
Beig, founder director,
System of Air Quality
Forecasting and Re-
search (SAFAR).
According to the In-
dian Meteorological De-
partment (IMD), a WD
in the form of a cyclon-
ic circulation is present
over Pakistan and ad-
joining Jammu Kash-
mir. An induced cyclon-
ic circulation is also
over Southwest Ra-
jasthan, Madhya
Pradesh, Gujarat and
parts of Maharashtra.
The WD affecting
Western Himalayas
from January 23 will in-
tensify rain and snow
in the region, peaking
on January 24 and 25.
As per forecast of a
popular private weath-
er forecasting blog, the
weather in Maharash-
tra will be pleasant.
Temperature is likely to
drop from Sunday going
into next week.
Last week’s lowest
temperatures were be-
tween 13 and 14 degrees
Celsius. As per IMD, the
minimum temperature
in the city will rise
slightly from January
22, but will drop again
by January 25.
Maha’s first integrated hazardous waste plant to come up soon
First India Bureau
Mumbai: In a first, the
state will soon have an
integrated hazardous
waste plant, which has
been recently granted
approval and is going to
be developed in Kansal
and Hendavli villages
of Raigad.
The facility, worth
Rs105 crore will be able
to process e-waste, bio-
medical refuse, indus-
trial waste, spent oil,
plastics and paper. The
project has been grant-
ed in-principle approv-
al from the Union envi-
ronment ministry, al-
lowing for the prepara-
tion of an environmen-
tal impact assessment
report and public con-
sultation.
The facility will come
up on 53 acres of land
and will be able to pro-
cess at least 4,50,000
million tonnes per an-
num of dangerous
waste materials from in
and around the Mum-
bai Metropolitan Re-
gion (MMR) and nearby
districts. This will be
more than any other
plant in the state and
will be able to inciner-
ate, landfilling and re-
cycle waste.
The decision was
taken at a meeting of
the Ministry of Envi-
ronment, Forest and
Climate Change of In-
dia’s (MoEFCC) expert
appraisal committee on
infrastructure projects.
“At the moment, dif-
ferent types of waste
are treated in different
facilities in Maharash-
tra, which leads to in-
creased costs for trans-
porters and recyclers,”
said a regional officer
with the Maharashtra
Pollution Control
Board (MPCB) in
Raigad.
“This integrated
plant will cater to com-
mercial, industrial and
healthcare units which
are coming up in and
around Raigad district,
and which are already
existing around the
Thane Creek,” said the
officer.“

The state Educa-

Shinde also said the

Under the old pen-

However, the pen-

from 2004.
“The government is
positive about the old

also for 25% reserva-

said.
Speaking about the

some foreign compa-

“Hence many in-

n the weeks since the Tali-
ban’s December 2022 de-
cree banning young wom-
en from attending univer-
sity, Afghans have shown
that they will not take this
latest outrage lying down.
Brave female students
have launched a campaign
of resistance – risking
beatings, arrest, or worse
– and their male counter-
parts (and many profes-
sors) have shown solidar-
ity by walking out of their
exams.
As much as the Taliban
tries to crush girls’ and
women’s rights, they are
unlikely to achieve a final
“victory.” Afghan girls
and women enjoyed a
right to education in the
years prior to the Tali-
ban’s return to power in
2021, and now neither in-
timidation nor prison sen-
tences will silence them.
They have experienced
what it is to be free, and
they will not accept the
alternative.
The Taliban have al-
ready been warned that if
they exclude women from
work performed by NGOs
providing food and health
care, these organizations
will have no choice but to
leave the country – a mes-
sage reinforced this week
by United Nations Deputy
Secretary-General Amina
Mohammed. But another
way to effect change is to
threaten the Taliban re-
gime with the full force of
international law. The
Taliban’s brutal and inhu-
mane treatment of wom-
en and girls warrants in-
vestigation by an interna-
tional tribunal. The re-
gime is clearly in breach
of the international con-
ventions dealing with
children’s and women’s
rights to which it has
agreed. No other country
in the world bars women
and girls from receiving
an education, and no oth-
er country has such dra-
conian forms of state-led
gender persecution.
I have spoken to many
Afghan students in my ca-
pacity as UN Special En-
voy for Global Education,
and words cannot capture
the frustration they feel.
The world’s poorest and
most vulnerable children
know that they are now
shouldering the heaviest
burden in the global fight
against one of the great-
est injustices of all – the
denial of girls’ and wom-
en’s rights. Afghan girls
have been denied access to
schools, banned from pub-
lic spaces, prevented from
traveling without a male
escort, and forced to wear
burqas that cover them
from head to toe.
The university clamp-
down has been in the off-
ing for some time. After
the Taliban takeover in
2021, universities intro-
duced gender-segregated
classrooms and entranc-
es, and declared that fe-
male students could be
taught only by women
professors or old men.
Then, in October 2022, the
Taliban issued sweeping
restrictions on the sub-
jects that women were
permitted to study
. Veteri-
nary science, engineer-
ing, economics, journal-
ism, and agriculture were
all deemed off limits.
During my many pre-
2021 visits to Afghan
schools where girls were
being taught, I saw first-
hand that there was wide-
spread enthusiasm for
universal education, both
in rural areas as well as
the cities. The Taliban’s
many bans fly in the face
of fundamental human
aspirations. People every-
where want more free-
dom, not less.
The Taliban’s policy on
girls’ and women’s educa-
tion represents neither
the real Afghanistan nor
the true Islam. It is urgent
that the international
community, and especial-
ly the Muslim world,
come together to support
young Afghan women as
they stand up for their
rights.

These examples
all suggest that the
authorities are not
legislating from a
position of strength.
Rather, they are acting
out of fear of women’s
empowerment. After all,
there is no other
credible justification for
such policies. Islam
encourages education,
and all of Afghanistan’s
neighbors offer

AFGHANISTAN HISTORY
OF BENEFITING FROM
GIRLS’ EDUCATION
Moreover, Afghanistan itself
has a history of benefiting
from girls’ education. The coun-
try’s own past shows that if the
Taliban continue down the road
of repression, Afghans will have
only half the doctors, nurses, and
teachers they need. And if half of
Afghanistan’s human capital has
been squandered, the economy,
which desperately needs to be
rebuilt, will remain among the
worst-performing in the world.
EDU IS A BIG NO FOR GIRLS
HERE SO IT IS CONTINUING
UNDERGROUND APPROACH
In some parts of the country,
education is continuing under-
ground or in home schools, with
little resistance from the authori-
ties, and in other areas, girls are
still allowed to attend regular
schools, in open defiance of the
Taliban’s injunctions. One can also
infer internal fissures from the
ban on women NGO workers, a
policy that the minister of public
health claims does not apply to
the health sector.

NARENDRA MODI CONVENES COUNCIL OF MINISTERS
New Delhi (Agencies): Prime
Minister Narendra Modi has
called a meeting of his Coun-
cil of Ministers on January 29
before the Parliament’s budget
session which is going to start
from January 31. In
2023, this will be
the first meeting
of the Council
of Ministers
of the Modi
government.
All Union
Ministers,
Ministers
of State (Independent Charge)
and Ministers of State will
participate in this meeting to
be chaired by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi. The meeting of
the Council of Ministers, called
before the last full budget of the
tenure of the Modi government,
is being termed crucial. On Feb-
ruary 1, Union Finance Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman will present
the Union budget.
According to sources, in
the meeting, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi can give special
instructions to all the ministers
regarding the budget session.
Since this will be the last full
budget of the Modi government,
the Prime Minister would want
that after the presentation of the
budget, all the ministers should
work tirelessly to highlight its
public welfare aspects to take
them to the public. Because
along with the assembly elec-
tions to be held in nine states
of the country this year, the
party would also like to take
the advantage of this budget in
the Lok Sabha elections to be
held next year.

Lucknow (PTI): Sama-
jwadi Party chief Akh-
ilesh Yadav on Sunday
said the BJP might taste
defeat in all 80 parlia-

“The party that

now counting its days.
Its national president
should visit two medi-
cal colleges in the state
and he will understand
how many seats they
are going to win,” the

chief minister said.
Yadav also asked the
BJP, which is holding
its state executive meet
here, to pass a resolu-
tion to provide Rs 1
crore and a government
job to families of custo-
dial death victims.
“The BJP practises
discrimination. Will it
pass a resolution to pro-
vide Rs 1 crore financial
help and a government
job to the family of Bal-
want Singh? It should
pass a resolution to pro-
vide Rs 1 crore financial
assistance and a govern-

Concessional Income
Tax regime expected in
Budget 2023-24: EY
New Delhi (PTI): The gov-
ernment is expected pro-
vide a more rationalised
TDS framework to reduce
the compliance burden for
taxpayers, besides a re-
vamped new concessional
tax regime by providing ad-
ditional benefits like stand-
ard deduction, EY said on
Sunday
.
The Budget wishlist of
EY also highlights that the
government should pro-
vide some respite to low-
and mid-income taxpayers
with annual income up to
Rs 20 lakh on the personal
income tax side.
Also, possibility of
'green' incentives to be in-
troduced such as tax ex-
emption to interest from
green bonds and rationali-
sation of capital gains
rates and holding periods
could be expected in the
Budget, to be unveiled in
Parliament on February 1.
With regard to Tax De-
ducted at Source (TDS),
the EY said that currently,
31 sections under the In-
come tax Act deal with dif-
ferent types of payments
to residents, where the
withholding tax rates vary
from 0.1 – 30%.

Q3 earnings, global trends to guide market
New Delhi (PTI): Trading
in the equity market in the
holiday-shortened week
ahead will be largely guid-
ed by the ongoing quarterly
earnings, global trends and
foreign fund movement,
analysts said.
Dalal Street also may
face volatility amid month-
ly derivatives expiry, they
added.
This week will be a
shortened week because
the market will be closed
on Thursday in honour of
Republic Day; thus, the
January month FO expi-
ry is scheduled for Wednes-
day, which may cause mar-
ket volatility
.
Global cues are also
volatile and lack direction,
but any major swing in the
global market may also im-
pact our markets. FIIs' sell-
ing has slowed down in the
last few days following ag-
gressive selling in the first
half of this month, but in-
stitutional flows will re-
main crucial for the direc-
tion of the market. Q3
earning season is going on,
therefore stock and sector-
specific moves will contin-
ue, said Santosh Meena,
Head of Research, Swasti-
ka Investmart Ltd.
Adani Group to spin off
hydrogen biz by 2028
New Delhi (PTI): Billion-
aire Gautam Adani's group
plans to spin off businesses
like hydrogen, airports and
data centre between 2025
and 2028 after they achieve
a certain investment pro-
file, it's Chief Financial Of-
ficer Jugeshinder Singh
said.
Adani Enterprises Ltd,
which is looking to raise Rs
20,000 crore in a follow-on
share sale, is the business
incubator for the group.
Over the years, businesses
such as ports, power and
city gas were first incubat-
ed in AEL before being
spun off or demerged into
separate listed companies.
AEL currently houses
new businesses such as hy-
drogen, where the group
plans to invest $50 billion
over the next 10 years
across the value chain,
flourishing airport opera-
tions, mining, data centre
and roads and logistics.
The businesses have to
achieve a basic investment
profile and maturity before
being considered for a de-
merger. Between 2025 and
2028 we think these busi-
nesses can achieve the de-
sired levels for a demerger,
Singh said.
The group is looking to
become one of the lowest
cost producers of hydro-
gen — a fuel of the future
that has zero carbon foot-
print. It is also betting big
on its airport business
with an aim to become the
largest service base in the
country in the coming
years, outside of govern-
ment services.
INFLOW IN GOLD ETFs DROPS
BY 90 PER CENT IN 2022
New Delhi (PTI): Inflow in gold exchange traded funds
(ETFs) plunged by 90% to `459 crore in 2022 due to rising
prices of yellow metal, increasing interest rate structure
coupled with inflationary pres-
sures. This was way lower than
an inflow of `4,814 crore seen
during 2021. However, the asset
base of gold ETFs and investors'
account or folio numbers in-
creased in 2022 from the preced-
ing year. On the domestic front,
investors are preferring to in-
vest in equities over other asset classes with the segment
attracting an investment of `1.6 lakh crore in 2022, way
higher than `96,700 crore seen in the preceding year.
There will be a big revolution in
the country in ’24: Bawankule
Rahul, Raut will have to wait till 2047 to be politically relevant, he said
First India Bureau
Amravati: Thackeray
faction leader MP San-
jay Raut had praised
Rahul Gandhi when he
recently took part in
Congress’ Bharat Jodo
Yatra. After that San-
jay Raut was being
fiercely attacked by the
Shinde group. Howev-
er, now BJP state chief
- C h a n d r a s h e k h a r
Bawankule-, who was
on Amravati tour on
Sunday, also attacked
MP Sanjay Raut, Con-
gress and Thackeray
faction.
Raut had glorified
Rahul Gandhi by say-
ing that if the public
wanted, Rahul Gandhi
would have to become
the Prime Minister in
2024. Talking about
this, Bawankule said
that for Raut’s words
to come true, they will
have to wait till 2047.
Targeting Rahul Gan-
dhi, Bawankule ex-
pressed confidence
that in the coming
year 2024, there will be
a big revolution in the
country.
MP Sanjay Raut had
claimed that the Bharat
Jodo Yatra, which
traveled from South In-
dia to North India, had
shaken the rulers.
Speaking on this,
Bawankule said that
Sanjay Raut and Rahul
Gandhi should stop
day dreaming as this
dream will not be ful-
filled till 2047.
M e a n w h i l e ,
Bawankule has also
criticized the Vanchit
Bahujan Aghadi alli-
ance. “We have no say
on whether there will
be an alliance between
the Thackeray group
and the Vanchit, but
one thing is before eve-
ryone, Uddhav Thack-
eray could not retain
the MLAs of his own
party. I dont know what
is the point of forming
an alliance with Ud-
dhav’s faction,”
Bawankule said.
“If Uddhav Thack-
eray could not handle
the MLAs of his party,
then how would the
constituents be able to
handle the party. They
don’t have that ability.
Therefore, how will he
take care of the under-
privileged. Mahavikas
Aghadi is changing
color day by day and is
now on the verge of
collapse. They will not
get a candidate in the
next term,” Bawankule
said.
IAF sergeant
held for making
hoax bomb call
First India Bureau
New Delhi: An Indian
Air Force sergeant was
arrested for allegedly
making a hoax bomb
call to delay the depar-
ture of the Mumbai Ra-
jdhani Express from
New Delhi Railway Sta-
tion, police said. The
PCR command room
informed the police re-
garding the call at 4.48
pm on Saturday, they
said, adding that the
train was scheduled to
leave for Mumbai at 4.55
pm. No explosive was
found during a search
carried out by the Bomb
Disposal Squad of the
railways and the Rail-
way Protection Force.
“The mobile number
was tracked and it was
found that Sunil Sang-
wan (35), a sergeant in
the Indian Air Force
(IAF), made the call,”
Hareesh HP, Deputy
Commissioner of Po-
lice (Railways) said.
According to police,
Sangwan was sched-
uled to board the train
to go to his place of
posting at Air Force Sta-
tion in Santacruz,
Mumbai. He got late
and allegedly made the
call to delay the depar-
ture of the train from
Delhi.
Sena-Vanchit alliance today?
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Discussions
are going on about
when will the Thacker-
ay group and the
Vanchit form an alli-
ance. Prakash Ambed-
kar told the media that
relations with the
Thackeray group were
not compatible. How-
ever, there is news that
the alliance between
the Thackeray faction
and the Vanchit will be
announced today
.
Vanchit chief
Prakash Ambedkar has
barely commented on
the alliance talks with
the Thackeray group.
For the last two months,
the talks of the Thack-
eray faction-desired al-
liance have been going
on. Ambedkar hardly
said that our relations
are not friendly
, but now
the line is being crossed.
Ambedkar’s problem
is Mahavikas Aghadi.
Ambedkar wants to
have an alliance with
Thackeray, but Uddhav
Thackeray is a constitu-
ent of the Mahavikas
Aghadi. Therefore, even
if there is an alliance
between the Thackeray
group and the Vanchit,
the Vanchit will get
seats from the Thacker-
ay group’s share in the
seat allocation.
If we look at Ambed-
kar’s meetings in the
last few days, he also
met Uddhav Thackeray
and Chief Minister
Eknath Shinde. But he
has repeatedly said
that the alliance will be
with Thackeray only.
At the same time, he
criticized the Congress
party and NCP chief
Sharad Pawar.
Gift to residents: Raj conducts
bhumi pujan of housing society
Mumbai: The dream of
Bhattipada residents of
Bhandup is about to
come true. Following
the initiative of philan-
thropist and national
president of Samaj Vi-
kas Kranti Party Ashok
Singh, the Bhumi Pujan
ceremony of the local
Shree Shivshankar
Housing Society was
done by MNS chief Raj
Thackeray. Apart from
Ashok Singh, Nilesh
Gawad, and Yogesh
Sawant, partners of
Laxmi Developers, and
a large number of peo-
ple were present on the
occasion.
The building named
Laxmi Heights is being
constructed by Laxmi
Developers. Speaking
on the occasion, Ashok
Singh said that with the
construction of Laxmi
Heights, the people of
this place will get a lot
of facilities. The work
was held up due to sev-
eral constraints.
First India Bureau
Pune: BJP is trying to
win Kasba and Pimpri
Chinchwad assembly
constituencies unop-
posed, but Congress,
NCP and Shiv Sena
(Thackeray) have taken
the stance to give a good
fight to the saffron par-
ty
. Leader of the opposi-
tion Ajit Pawar spoke
on the matter and ex-
pressed the expectation
that other parties and
individuals who have
strength in Kasba and
Pimpri Chinchwad con-
stituencies, should sup-
port the MVA.
Pawar said, “A meet-
ing of Mahavikas Agha-
di will be held on Mon-
day or Tuesday regard-
ing the by-election of
both seats in Pune. In
this meeting, decision
will be taken by constit-
uent parties as well as
the allied parties. Activ-
ists and office bearers
in Pimpri have also
urged the party’s na-
tional president Sharad
Pawar to contest this
election. I am of the
clear opinion that Ma-
havikas Aghadi should
contest both of these
seats.”
NCP’ sRupali Patil
said, “We are going to
request Sharad Pawar,
Ajit Pawar, Supriya
Sule, and Jayant Patil to
contest this election.”
Mumbai: Indian Navy
is set to commission
the fifth Kalvari class
submarine Vagir on 23

the Naval Staff, will be
the Chief Guest for the

tion of having the low-
est build time among
all indigenously manu-
factured submarines

her maiden sea sortie
in Feb 22, marking the
commencement of sea
trials and has gone
through a series of
comprehensive accept-
ance checks and, strin-
gent and demanding

‘Congress never wanted
Babasaheb to excel politically’
First India Bureau
Chandrapur: Ever
since the talks of an
alliance between
Vanchit Aghadi’s
Prakash Ambedkar,
Uddhav Thackeray
and the Congress par-
ty started, Prakash
Ambedkar has been
repeatedly advised by
the BJP regarding
the alliance. Now, for-
est minister Sudhir
Mungatiwar has ad-
vised Prakash
Ambedkar to remem-
ber Congress’ han-
dling of Babasaheb
Ambedkar and the
latter’s view on Con-
gress.
Speaking about
this, he said, “Con-
gress did injustice to
Babasaheb when he
had the power to lead
politically. Therefore,
Prakash Ambedkar
should pay attention
towards Congress.
Congress had misbe-
haved even while
awarding Bharat Rat-
na to Babasaheb.”
The forest minister
also reminded
Prakash Ambedkar
that Pandit Nehru
himself had contest-
ed the Bhandara Lok
Sabha election to de-
feat Babasaheb and
stressed that Con-
gress did not allow
Babasaheb to enter
the Parliament.
He has also re-
minded Prakash that
Congress had done
wrong even while giv-
ing Bharat Ratna to
Babasaheb. “Babasa-
heb Ambedkar was
repeatedly misquoted
by the Congress re-
garding these various
incidents,” Mungati-
war said.

MVA hopes to dent BJP’s ‘hopes’
on Kasba and Pimpri seats
First India Bureau
Ahmednagar: Since
the handover of pow-
erinMaharashtrasix
months ago, Shinde
and Thackeray
groups have been at-
tacking each other
fiercely
. After the for-
mation of the Shinde-
Fadnavis govern-
ment, elections for
thegraduateconstitu-
ency have started.
Now, accusations are
being made during
the campaigning.
MLA Shahaji Bapu,
who went viral on so-
cial media due to the
conversation on
phone, has strongly
targeted the Thack-
eray group.
He also criticized
MP Sanjay Raut and
YashwantraoChavan.
Bapu said that Maha-
rashtra, which is run-
ning on the ideas of
YashwantraoChavan,
is getting muddy be-
cause of Sanjay Raut.
Therefore, the Thack-
eray-Shinde dispute
is likely to get more
heated. The develop-
ment race of the gov-
ernment under the
leadership of Shinde-
Fadnavis is going on
vigorously in the
state. The govern-
ment has not made
any mistakes regard-
ing development, and
the people of Maha-
rashtra are standing
behind Shinde-Fad-
navis because of this.
Although Shinde-
Fadnavisgovernment
came into existence
six months ago,
Thackeray group has
constantly been criti-
cizing the govern-
ment as unconstitu-
tional. That criticism
is being reacted to
equally strongly by
the Shinde group.
A few days ago, Su-
shma Andhare had
criticizedMLABapu.
Speaking on it, Bapu
said that there is no
need for Sushma
Andhare to wake up
Maharashtra. The
people of Maharash-
tra are with the Shin-
de-Fadnavis govern-
ment. However, he
refrained from talk-
ing about the alli-
ance, saying that
onlyPrakashAmbed-
kar can tell about
their and Thacker-
ay’s alliance.

First India Bureau
Pune: NCP chief
Sharad Pawar on Sun-

policies of Union gov-
ernment are a continu-
ation of direction in
which the ministry
moved when he was at

Pawar said policies
that were taken at that
time are being imple-
mented on a large scale
by present (NDA) dis-
pensation.
Speaking on the side-
lines of an agricultural
expo in Baramati, he
said “80 to 90 per cent
decisions” on display
in the event were ones
that were taken under
the UPA government.
“It (agricultural pol-
icies) was supposed to
go in a particular di-
rection, we had decid-
ed (during UPA rule).
Today, steps being tak-
en are going in the
same direction, which
is a good thing,” he
said.
Pawar also said cur-
rent agricultural poli-
cies are not weak since
food grain production
was rising.

  • 1. First India Bureau Pune: Various Hindut- va bodies under the ae- gis of Sakal Hindu Sa- maj on Sunday took out a protest march in Ma- harashtra’s Pune city against “love jihad”, il- legal conversions and cow slaughter. The ‘Hindu Jan Ak- rosh Morcha’ started at the historical Lal Ma- hal and culminated at the statue of Chhatra- pati Sambhaji Maharaj in Deccan area, a dis- tance of about 5 km. The morcha organis- ers demanded the death anniversaryof Chhatra- pati Sambhaji Maharaj, eldest son of Chhatra- pati Shivaji Maharaj, be declared as ‘Balidan Din’ (Martyr’s Day). Sambhaji Maharaj was tortured to death on the orders of Mughal em- peror Aurangazeb. First India Bureau Mumbai: The Brihan- mumbai Municipal Corporation has said the allegation of a Rs 100 crore scam in set- ting up of jumbo COV- ID-19 centres is “base- less” as only Rs 33.13 crore has been spent on providing manpower at two such facilities in the city . Also, the matter of verification whether the partnership deed, stamp paper for the con- tract with a hospital management services company is fake is con- cerned with Registra- tion and Controller of Stamps Department and does not fall under the BMC’s purview. Therefore, it is totally wrong to accuse munici- pal administration in this regard, BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal said. On the issue of differ- ent dates mentioned on the stamp paper and the last page of the partner- ship deed, the contrac- tor stated before an in- quiry committee of the BMC that this was an “inadvertent typo- graphical error”, the statement said. T This Republic Day will be remembered more for auto- rickshaw drivers, vendors, construction workers behind the Central Vista project and Kartavya Path’s maintenance workforce than for the who’s who in the front rows to enjoy India’s might on display as special invitees n the weeks since the Tali- ban’s December 2022 de- cree banning young wom- en from attending univer- sity, Afghans have shown that they will not take this latest outrage lying down. Brave female students have launched a campaign of resistance – risking beatings, arrest, or worse – and their male counter- parts (and many profes- sors) have shown solidar- ity by walking out of their exams. As much as the Taliban tries to crush girls’ and women’s rights, they are unlikely to achieve a final “victory.” Afghan girls and women enjoyed a right to education in the years prior to the Tali- ban’s return to power in 2021, and now neither in- timidation nor prison sen- tences will silence them. They have experienced what it is to be free, and they will not accept the alternative. The Taliban have al- ready been warned that if they exclude women from work performed by NGOs providing food and health care, these organizations will have no choice but to leave the country – a mes- sage reinforced this week by United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed. But another way to effect change is to threaten the Taliban re- gime with the full force of international law. The Taliban’s brutal and inhu- mane treatment of wom- en and girls warrants in- vestigation by an interna- tional tribunal. The re- gime is clearly in breach of the international con- ventions dealing with children’s and women’s rights to which it has agreed. No other country in the world bars women and girls from receiving an education, and no oth- er country has such dra- conian forms of state-led gender persecution. I have spoken to many Afghan students in my ca- pacity as UN Special En- voy for Global Education, and words cannot capture the frustration they feel. The world’s poorest and most vulnerable children know that they are now shouldering the heaviest burden in the global fight against one of the great- est injustices of all – the denial of girls’ and wom- en’s rights. Afghan girls have been denied access to schools, banned from pub- lic spaces, prevented from traveling without a male escort, and forced to wear burqas that cover them from head to toe. The university clamp- down has been in the off- ing for some time. After the Taliban takeover in 2021, universities intro- duced gender-segregated classrooms and entranc- es, and declared that fe- male students could be taught only by women professors or old men. Then, in October 2022, the Taliban issued sweeping restrictions on the sub- jects that women were permitted to study . Veteri- nary science, engineer- ing, economics, journal- ism, and agriculture were all deemed off limits. During my many pre- 2021 visits to Afghan schools where girls were being taught, I saw first- hand that there was wide- spread enthusiasm for universal education, both in rural areas as well as the cities. The Taliban’s many bans fly in the face of fundamental human aspirations. People every- where want more free- dom, not less. The Taliban’s policy on girls’ and women’s educa- tion represents neither the real Afghanistan nor the true Islam. It is urgent that the international community, and especial- ly the Muslim world, come together to support young Afghan women as they stand up for their rights. SOURCE: PROJECT SYNDICATE THE TALIBAN CANNOT DEFEAT WOMEN I GORDON BROWN The writer is a former Prime Minister and chancellor of the exchequer of the United Kingdom YASMINE SHERIF The writer is a Director of Education Cannot Wait These examples all suggest that the authorities are not legislating from a position of strength. Rather, they are acting out of fear of women’s empowerment. After all, there is no other credible justification for such policies. Islam encourages education, and all of Afghanistan’s neighbors offer schooling for girls AFGHANISTAN HISTORY OF BENEFITING FROM GIRLS’ EDUCATION Moreover, Afghanistan itself has a history of benefiting from girls’ education. The coun- try’s own past shows that if the Taliban continue down the road of repression, Afghans will have only half the doctors, nurses, and teachers they need. And if half of Afghanistan’s human capital has been squandered, the economy, which desperately needs to be rebuilt, will remain among the worst-performing in the world. EDU IS A BIG NO FOR GIRLS HERE SO IT IS CONTINUING UNDERGROUND APPROACH In some parts of the country, education is continuing under- ground or in home schools, with little resistance from the authori- ties, and in other areas, girls are still allowed to attend regular schools, in open defiance of the Taliban’s injunctions. One can also infer internal fissures from the ban on women NGO workers, a policy that the minister of public health claims does not apply to the health sector. l Vol 1 l Issue No. 257 l RNI TITLE NO. Raut had glorified Rahul Gandhi by say- ing that if the public wanted, Rahul Gandhi would have to become the Prime Minister in 2024. Talking about this, Bawankule said that for Raut’s words to come true, they will have to wait till 2047. Targeting Rahul Gan- dhi, Bawankule ex- pressed confidence that in the coming year 2024, there will be a big revolution in the country. MP Sanjay Raut had claimed that the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which traveled from South In- dia to North India, had shaken the rulers. Speaking on this, Bawankule said that Sanjay Raut and Rahul Gandhi should stop day dreaming as this dream will not be ful- filled till 2047. M e a n w h i l e , Bawankule has also criticized the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi alli- ance. “We have no say on whether there will be an alliance between the Thackeray group and the Vanchit, but one thing is before eve- ryone, Uddhav Thack- eray could not retain the MLAs of his own party. I dont know what is the point of forming an alliance with Ud- dhav’s faction,” Bawankule said. “If Uddhav Thack- eray could not handle the MLAs of his party, then how would the constituents be able to handle the party. They don’t have that ability. Therefore, how will he take care of the under- privileged. Mahavikas Aghadi is changing color day by day and is now on the verge of collapse. First India Bureau Mumbai: Discussions are going on about when will the Thacker- ay group and the Vanchit form an alli- ance. Prakash Ambed- kar told the media that relations with the Thackeray group were not compatible. How- ever, there is news that the alliance between the Thackeray faction and the Vanchit will be announced today . Vanchit chief Prakash Ambedkar has barely commented on the alliance talks with the Thackeray group. For the last two months, the talks of the Thack- eray faction-desired al- liance have been going on. Ambedkar hardly said that our relations are not friendly , but now the line is being crossed. Ambedkar’s problem is Mahavikas Aghadi. Ambedkar wants to have an alliance with Thackeray, but Uddhav Thackeray is a constitu- ent of the Mahavikas Aghadi. Therefore, even if there is an alliance between the Thackeray group and the Vanchit, the Vanchit will get seats from the Thacker- ay group’s share in the seat allocation. If we look at Ambed- kar’s meetings in the last few days, he also met Uddhav Thackeray and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. But he has repeatedly said that the alliance will be with Thackeray only. At the same time, he criticized the Congress party and NCP chief Sharad Pawar.
