his visit to his parlia-

Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi said that “the
energy of Kashi is not
only eternal, it also con-

mensions”.
Speaking at the
Swarved Mahamandir
Dham, he said cities
like Banaras have pre-
served India’s identity,
art, and entrepreneur-
ship even in the tough-
est of times. “Where
there is a seed, the tree
begins to expand from
there. And that is why,
today when we talk
about the development
of Banaras, it also
forms the roadmap for
the development of the
whole of India,” he
said.PM Modi said he
went for an inspection
of the city late at night.
“The beautification
work that has been
done in Gadolia locali-
ty has become a sight to
behold. I interacted
with so many people
there. I also saw Ba-
naras railway station
in Manduadih. This
station has also been
renovated. Embracing
the novelty while re-
taining the old, Ba-
naras is giving a new
direction to the coun-
try,” he said.
“In comparison to
2014-15, the number of
tourists visiting here
has doubled in 2019-20.
In the 2019-20 Covid-19
period, more than 30
lakh people have come
and gone from Babat-
pur airport alone,” he
mentioned.

of October 3, UP Po-

submitted in court that
killing of four farmers

 he was not even pre-

unning over of farm-

Kheri by a motor ve-
hicle allegedly driv-
en rashly by Ajay
, the
son of Union Minister of State
for Home Ajay Mishra, has cre-
ated an embarrassing situation
for the Central and UP govern-
ments. The Central government
has defended the minister and
not allowed a discussion on his
removal in the Lok Sabha. The
UP government was pulled up
by the Supreme Court for drag-
ging its feet in the probe.
Four farmers were killed
when a vehicle in Ashish’s con-
voy ran over the farmers pro-
testing against the farm laws.
Four others, including a jour-
nalist, were killed in the vio-
lence that followed. The Special
Investigating Team has called it
a “deliberate act of murder”.
Had the Supreme Court not
appointed a former judge and
IPS officers of its choice, Ashish
Mishra would have got away
with the alleged murder. The
farmers would have been brand-
ed Khalistanis. Will the govern-
ment still cling to Ajay Mishra
or drop him like a hot potato?
R
ational security
concerns have
prevailed over
degradation of
the environment
in Uttarakhand. Invariably,
for one reason or another, de-
velopment always wins over
the environment. A Supreme
Court Bench has allowed two-
lane paved roads for the 900-
km Chardham project in the
interest of national security
.
The road project has come at
the cost of massive felling of
trees and after overcoming
legal hurdles and protests
from environmentalists.
Justice DY Chandrachud,
who headed the Bench, said
that a balanced approach is
needed when it comes to wid-
ening of a strategic road and
sustainable development.
The Bench said that the infra-
structuralneedsof thearmed
forces for swift deployment
cannot be ignored.
An NGO “Citizens for
Green Doon” sought the
court’s direction to stop fell-
ing of trees without prior
clearance on the Ganeshpur-
Dehradun stretch of the Del-
hi-Dehradunexpressway
.Citi-
zen’s plea, though justified,
came a bit too late as Dehra-
dun and its adjoining areas
had lost much of its greenery
to rapacious individuals
much before the Chardham
road project got the govern-
ment’s nod. Anyone going to
Dehradun, and even to Queen
of theHillsMussoorie,during
summer will vouch that un-
regulated construction and
tree felling has ruined the
city’s climate.
The Chardham road pro-
ject was initially aimed at
facilitating pilgrims going to
Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gan-
gotri and Yamunotri. The
Centre’s notification in 2018
said that the road width in
hilly terrain should not ex-
ceed 5.5 metres. In 2020 the
Defence Ministry wanted the
width for three highways
leading up to the China bor-
der to be increased to 10 m.
Skirmishes with China in
Ladakh justified the minis-
try’s request.

Her recent visit to Mumbai
to meet the stalwarts there
and her statement… Where
is the UPA? Has not gone
down well with her “friends”
in the Opposition camp.
By already upsetting the
Congress, TMC is now facing
heat from Shiv Sena.
The Shiv Sena has taken
strong exception to Mamata’s
criticism of the Grand Old
Party and her declaration of
the Congress-led UPA being
over, saying it is akin to
strengthening today’s “fas-
cist” government.
Shiv Sena-Congress’ ally in
Maharashtra, in an editorial
in its mouthpiece Saamana,
said strengthening the UPA is
the only real option before the
Opposition parties. The edito-
rial said those who don’t ac-
cept the Congress’ leadership
of theUPAshouldsaysoclear-
ly
, as making statements “be-
hind the curtain only leads to
more suspicion”.
Shiv Sena also specifically
asked the Congress leader-
ship Sonia Gandhi and Rahul
Gandhi to clarify their stand
on what they plan to do re-
garding UPA and they want-
ed the party also to clearly
spell out who would lead the
alliance.
“Although it is true that in
West Bengal, she (Mamata)
finished the Congress, the
Left and the BJP, doing poli-
tics by keeping Congress
away from national politics
is like strengthening today’s
state with a fascist tendency
,”
the Shiv Sena said in the
Saamana editorial.
“One can understand that
(PM) Modi and the BJP want
the Congress to be over. It is
partof theirprogramme.But,
if those fighting Modi and the
BJP also feel that the Con-
gress should be over, it is the
biggest threat,” the Sena felt.
Recently, Shiv Sena leader
Sanjay Raut met Rahul Gan-
dhi and said there cannot be
any opposition front without
the Congress - a major mes-
sage aimed at Mamata after
she had asked “What UPA?”
“There has to be only one
opposition front against the
BJP. An opposition front is
not possible without the Con-
gress. What is the point of
two-three fronts? It will ben-
efit the BJP,” Raut, a Rajya
Sabha MP of the Shiv Sena,
had told the media.
Asked if Opposition par-
ties would huddle to discuss
pre-poll strategies against
the might of BJP for the 2024
General Elections, Raut said:
“I have asked Rahul Gandhi
to take the lead on that.”
However, his comment…
“Who leads the front is some-
thingallpartieshavetositand
decide together…” will not be
music to Mamata’s ears.
Asked if Shiv Sena is try-
ing to apply balm to the
miffed relationship between
the Congress and Mamata
Banerjee, Raut went on to
say: “Sharad Pawar Saab hai
(we have NCP leader Sharad
Pawar for that).”
The meeting which took
place clearly showed signs
that the Congress and the
Shiv Sena, part of the coali-
tion government in Maha-
rashtra, may be inching to-
wards an understanding in a
wider perspective.
Congress sources are of
the opinion that Sena might
back the party in the state
elections early next year.
Though the Sena has (almost)
negligible presence in Punjab
and Uttar Pradesh, the politi-
cal message of extending sup-
port to the Congress may re-
veal the proximity of the two
ideologically opposed parties
which had to work very hard
and bury the hatchet to come
together politically
.
Some days ago, Sena “had
strongly defended” the Con-
gress especially in the light
of West Bengal Chief Minis-
ter’s attacks.
After meeting with Shiv
Sena leaders and the NCP’s
Sharad Pawar in Mumbai,
Mamata Banerjee had told re-
porters: “What UPA? There is
no UPA now? What is the
UPA? We will clear all issues.
Wewantastrongalternative.”
“Deliberatelykeeping”Con-
gress out of the fight of na-
tional politics and creating an
opposition forum parallel to
the UPA would only strength-
en the BJP and “fascist” forc-
es, the Sena editorial said.
“It is true that Mamata Ba-
nerjee finished the Congress,
Left and BJP in West Bengal.
But keeping Congress out of
national politics will amount
to strengthening the current
fascist forces. It is under-
standable that (Prime Minis-
ter Narendra) Modi and his
BJP feel that Congress should
be wiped out. This is part of
their agenda. But it is more
dangerous when those fight-
ing against Modi and his ide-
ology think that the Congress
should be wiped out,” said the
Saamna piece.

The gift that PM Modi has given to Kashi is unprecedented: Temple head priest

ous. “Worship is being

an alliance with Apna
Dal (S) to make inroads
in Kurmi voters, the sec-
ond largest and power-
ful OBC community af-
ter Yadavs in UP. Anu-
priya Patel’s party has a
sway over this commu-
nity. It has contested
2014, 2019 Lok Sabha
elections and 2017 UP
elections in alliance
with BJP
.
In the 2017 assembly
Apna Dal (S) won nine
seats but only Jai Ku-
mar Singh Jackie could
become a minister of
State in the Yogi govern-
ment from the Apna Dal
(S) quota. Anupriya
wanted to get her hus-
band Ashish Patel, an
MLA, included in the
Yogi cabinet, but things
could not work out.
Even after a long
wait, Anupriya Patel
was included as a Union
minister in the cabinet
expansion of the Modi
government this year.
Now her party is de-
manding around 45
seats for an alliance
with BJP in the 2022
elections. Most of these
seats are from Central
UP and Bundelkhand.
Recently
, there was a po-
litical stir due to Anu-
priya’s statement that
politics is a game of pos-
sibilities; it cannot be
said now with whom
she will be in alliance in
future. After this, a buzz
was created about the
closeness of this party
to the SP. However, BJP
office-bearers refute
any differences with the
old ally. It would be
worth mentioning that
to woo the Nishad caste
group, which has a pop-
ulation of 4 percent in
the state, the BJP
formed an alliance with
Nishad Party
.
But the issue of seat-
sharing with this party
has not been resolved
yet. At the same time,
Sanjay Nishad has been
adopting an aggressive
attitude over his old de-
mand to include the Ni-
shad community in the
list of Scheduled
Castes. Although BJP
stalwart Amit Shah
himself is taking the
initiative to resolve all
the issues related to
this ally.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will
attend a rally of Nishad party on Dec
17. Nishad Party president Sanjay
Nishad said that CM Yogi Adityanath
and other leaders of BJP will also join
the rally. Announcement regarding
providing reservation to Nishads,
riverine community is expected. Ni-
shad Party president Sanjay Nishad
on Monday said that Union Home
Minister Amit Shah will be attending
a rally of his party on December 17.

Lucknow: After the
repeal of three farm
laws and return of
farmers from Delhi
border, the ruling BJP
has renewed efforts to
reach out to farmers
in West UP
.
The BJP’s vast elec-
tion machinery which
was slowed down
during the last few
months in the region
because of the farm-
ers stir, has been fully
geared up afresh with
national BJP presi-
dent JP Nadda ad-
dressing the booth
level presidents con-
ference last week in
Meerut.
Now it is time for
realpolitik between
the BJP and Samajwa-
di Party-Rashtriya
Lok Dal (SP-RLD) alli-
ancetotakeadvantage
of the prevailing situ-
ation. While the BJP
has initiated exercise
to cool down tempers
of farmers by talking
about “Ganna vesrus
Jinnah” and other
welfare measures, the
SP-RLD alliance has
been trying to keep up
the momentum gener-
ated during the stir by
repeatedly reminding
them about one year
of governmental
atrocities, tribula-
tions, sacrifices
name-calling and kill-
ing of four farmers in
Lakhimpur Khiri on
October 3.
The BJP is expect-
ing that time would
heal their wounds and
thepartywillbeableto
win them over other
slogans. However,
keeping the farmers
“battle-ready” the
Samyukata Kisan
Morcha, an apex body
of the farmers of Pun-
jab, Haryana and UP
,
will be meeting in last
week of January 2022
to take stock of the
situation. By that time
election schedule for
UP elections would
have been announced.

Inaugurating incomplete
projects won’t help BJP: Maya
Lucknow: A day after
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi inaugurated
the Kashi Vishwanath
Dham, Bahujan Samaj
Party (BSP) chief May-
awati took a swipe at
BJP saying that inau-
gurating incomplete
projects “just before the
announcement of UP
Assembly Elections”
won’t help the party ex-
pand its voter base.
“The back-to-back
announcements, foun-
dation stone laying of
new projects and inau-
gurations of incom-
plete projects by Cen-
tral and states just be-
fore the announcement
of the Assembly elec-
tions are not going to
help that party expand
its voter base,” May-
awati said.
The PM had inaugu-
rated the Kashi Vish-
wanath Corridor proj-
ect in his Lok Sabha
constituency Varanasi
on Monday
. Further, at-
tacking the SP, she said,
“No political party is

ducting expelled, inac-

bers of other parties,

Akhilesh Yadav mocks
BJP’s ‘double-engine’ govt
First India Bureau
Jaunpur: Samajwadi
Party president Akh-
ilesh Yadav on Tues-
day said the double-en-
gine government of
the BJP has failed with
its engines colliding
against each other, ac-
cusing it of disappoint-
ing farmers and the
jobless youth in UP. He
said the BJP govern-
ment at the Centre
withdrew the three
contentious farm laws
only because of the as-
sembly elections.
The farmers would
have stood against
them in the elections,
and for this reason, the
farm laws were with-
drawn.” Mocking the
BJP’s constant claim
that the state benefited
because the same party
led the governments in
UP and at the Centre,
he said, This double-en-
gine government has
completely failed. —PTI

of senior comedians Lil-

roasted her husband on
the show with bells on.
She brought an ava-

by remarking how she
never wanted to babysit,
my bad, marry any an-

chuckled about how the

have also mentioned a

The dropping of the sur-

he art of deliver-
ing a powerful,
impactful pres-
entation can be a
huge asset for
Students as well
as Young Profes-
sionals. It sets one apart
and encourages the audi-
ence to remember you,
perhaps the most vital as-
set in today’s information-
heavy world where things
and people are forgotten
almost instantly
. Especial-
ly in a post-pandemic
world where most educa-
tion, as well as work, is
virtual, businesses are
work-from-home, if one is
not able to create a Last-
ing Impression ONLINE,
one simply falls by the
wayside! So what are the
few key aspects that one
must keep in mind in or-
der to deliver great pres-
entations?
COMPLIMENT INSTEAD
OF REPEATING
Many times, there is a ten-
dency for the content on
one’s power-point slides to
be the exact same thing
that the presenter is ver-
balizing. This is a rookie
mistake that should be
avoided. The content on
thescreen/slidemustcom-
pliment and support what
the speaker is saying, not
replicate it. This keeps the
listener’s viewer’s inter-
est high and makes for a
more impactful, immer-
sive presentation.
PAUSE EFFECT
A terribly underrated but
vital tool; the power of
‘pause’ is invaluable in
making an impactful pres-
entation. There is a ten-
dency to go faster as
speakers become more
passionate and excited
about the content of their
presentations. This is only
natural. If however, we
can be conscious of this
tendency and check it, we
will morph into much
more powerful presenters.
To take a breath, a pause,
a beat at a juncture where
one is sharing a vital sta-
tistic, making an impor-
tant point, soliciting an
emotional response and
connection through a
symbolic story; the pres-
entation will come across
as well thought out and
extremely deep.
THE ACT OF DRAMA
A great presentation
ought to inspire and move
people, jolt them, there
has to be some flair to it.
A great way of achieving
this is by Dramatization,
at least in certain parts.
Think of yourself less as
a presenter and more as a
theatre artist. This way
of thinking will automat-
ically call on certain
tricks being employed –
varying the pace of your
delivery, as if it were dia-
logues. Or, using the en-
tire length and breadth of
the stage rather than ze-
roing in on one position
and sticking to it. Or, us-
ing hand and body ges-
tures liberally to illus-
trate, demonstrate, and
heighten the crucial
points you are making.
Treat it like an ‘enact-
ment’. The light-hearted
parts of your presenta-
tion should have you
morph into that senti-
ment, with your tone and
body language mirroring
the emotion of that part
of the content. Similarly,
if you are making an in-
spirational point, so
should your body! Some
of this might have limita-
tions in an online space
but one can still be
theatrical rather
than be downright
monotonous.
EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT
Human beings love ‘hu-
man’ stories. Elevate your
presentations from being
mundane selections of
facts, figures and statis-
tics, to anecdotal sharing
of personal experiences.
Use personal incidents to
exemplify your points. It
is these ‘slices of
your life’ that
will generate
empathy, in-
spiration and
identifiability
in your audi-
ence, not mere
facts alone. Your
passion and sincerity
is bound to come
through via these person-
al incidents, and THAT is
when your presentations
will become emotionally
compelling!
LET YOUR EYES TALK
 CONNECT
Ditch the teleprompter,
the computer, the screen
and your presentation re-
mote control. Look, con-
nect, with your audience.
Nothing spells confidence
or generates a response
more than human eye
contact. Often engrossed
in our presentations, we
forget entirely about this.
Be conscious of it. Divide
your audience into three
directional quadrants
and regularly make eye
contact with each section.
Then they will recognize
your courage, conviction,
and passion.
DO NOT LIE
Last, my strong advice is,
NO LIES. Do not lie
about facts and figures,
do not lie about knowing
something if and when
you don’t, and certainly
do not makeup stories
about your own inspi-
rations and motives.
They will almost never
seem sincere, coming
across as contrived
and banal, and will be
caught by your audi-
ence in a flash. Be sin-
cere. And this sincer-
ity will reflect in
your own tone, and
be perceived as
such, by your listen-
ers.
All the best!
Present With Power!

MITALI DUSAD
mitalidusad01@gmail.com
ith almost each of
us possessing a
smartphone, play-
ing video games is
no more restricted
to only those with
gaming consoles or
gaming computers. When
Candy Crush was released
in 2014, it became a hit for
children and adults alike.
Wherever we looked,
whether it is on public
transport, or on college
campuses, or outside
schools, multiple people
had their heads stuck in
the mobile game, sliding
similar colored candies to
match them up and get
the adrenalin rush that
comes from completing a
level. However, no one
spoke about a Candy
Crush ban as it was not
perceived as a danger-
ous game.
Now, mobile game
lovers have turned to-
wards yet another ad-
dictive first-person shooter
game - PUBG. Almost 400
million people around the
world play Player Un-
known’s BattleGrounds
(PUBG). In each game, up to
one hundred players para-
chute onto an island and
then look for weapons to kill
the others without getting
killed themselves. The last
player or the last team
standing wins the game.
The thrill of being the last
one standing, the instant
gratification, and the rush
of adrenalin - what’s not to
like? Most of us simply keep
coming back to PUBG for
more. We cannot seem to get
enough!
The Battle Royal-style
game is nothing new as sim-
ilar games such as H1Z1,
Fortnite, and Rules of Sur-
vival have existed for years.
So why is PUBG becoming
such a big problem that
states are calling for an out-
rightbanonamobilegames?
PUBG exposes children to
a world of crime and nega-
tive thinking, a top scientist
has warned amid calls in
some quarters to ensure
that online games, particu-
larly for kids, comply with
best international stand-
ards, regulations, and prac-
tices. Reports said a 22-year-
old man addicted to the
multi-player combat game
allegedly committed suicide
at his home in Maharash-
tra’s Yavatmal district,
while a boy
, aged 14, killed
himself after a nightlong
PUBG (PlayerUnknowns
Battlegrounds) session in
Kota in Rajasthan in May.
Last year, a 15-year-old boy
from Bhiwandi in the Thane
district of Maharashtra al-
legedly killed his elder
brother for scolding him
overplaying PUBG on his
mobile phone. PUBG does
more harm than good. It ex-
poses children to a world of
crime and war. It does not
enhance the skill or intellec-
tual capability of players,
especially children and ex-
poses them to all kinds of
negative thinking. It is a
chance game and there will
be a tendency to play until
winning.
With the amazing audio-
visual features of PUBG
along with its marketing
tactics through online gam-
ing events, incidents of vio-
lence, self-harm, and news
of accidents while traveling
because of being absorbed
in playing PUBG are mak-
ing parents worry
.
PUBG: CONTROLS THE MIND?
Gaming addiction is a real disorder recognised byWHO, but
what does a gaming disorder do to our minds and bodies?
After the news of a minor who was addicted to online games,
Free Fire Pubg Dragon Squad andTeen Patti killed his younger
cousin and buried his body. With the highly advanced au-
diovisual features of PUBG along with its marketing tactics
through online gaming events, such incidents of violence, self-
harm, and news of accidents while traveling because of being
absorbed in playing PUBG are making parents worry. City First
spoke to a few people on the increasing impact of PUBG and
how it affects mental and physical health!
W
PUBG mobile is free of
cost, accessible to almost
anyone, and doesn’t require
any prerequisite skill to start
playing. But every coin has
two sides. Easy accessibility and
no-cost have made PUBG avail-
able to young children as
well, who are getting easily
influenced by the game.”
—SUNEETA DUSAD,
Home maker
I was very startled to read
the news recently. It is
very sad to hear how these
games affect the lives of
people. Children need to
be mentally strong. I also believe that
anything done in limits is healthy.
Playing PUBG ain’t a problem but
getting deviated and losing mind is a
huge problem.”
—RAHUL TANK, Accountant
Most games, even the
violent ones, test your skills
and reflexes. Here, it goes
beyond and ticks that very
base human characteristic
of taking great pleasure in spoiling
the fun of other players. In PUBG,
surviving a round means that 99 other
people did not and that itself is a huge
surge of adrenaline.”
—ARCHANA VYAS, Teacher
You can play PUBG with your friends
and voice chat in real-time! This is simi-
lar to the approach of the popular PC
game Counterstrike, and because of the
human connection with other players, it
could get very addictive. Both kids and adults lose
track of time when playing, at the cost of ignoring
studies, work or other activities. Strategizing to hit
targets with peers gets the children excited and
hooked onto these games.”
—SAKSHI BOHRA, Medical student
So basically PUBG is the ultimate
mobile game for me because it’s free
and a lot addictive! I play it with my
friends and it’s a lot of fun to talk
through the voice option while play-
ing because it brings the gaming out. Especially
now that I have a nice phone gaming is going to
be a lot of fun. I think such news is subjective, a
weak mind can do anything.”
—RHYTHM PALIIKONDA, Student

The SIT urged the CJM to replace IPC sec- tions 279 (rash driving/ riding), 338 (causing grievous injuries by negligence) and 304A (causing death by a rash and negligent act) with IPC section 307 (attempt to mur- der) among oth- ers in the case. The SIT also recommended promulgation of IPC 326, 34 and sec- tions 3/25/30 of Arms Act in war- rants of the 13 ac- cused. LAKHIMPUR KHERI VIOLENCE A ‘PLANNED CONSPIRACY’: SIT In light of its findings, SIT has written to judge to modify the charges against the accused, including Union MoS Ajay Mishra’s son, Ashish; eight people had lost their lives in the incident on October 3 RaGa: PM must apologise remove MoS from post New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday demanded that Union minister Ajay Mishra be re- moved from his post over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence and said it is time for Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi to apolo- gise once again. “Modi ji, it is time to apologise again... But first remove the accused’s father from the minister’s post. The truth is before you!,” Gandhi said on Twitter, using the hashtags “Lakhim- pur” and “murder”. “A minister has tried to kill farmers. The prime minister knows as he is in his team. We raised the is- sue but we were not allowed a discussion on it even then. We were all silenced at the time after we wanted to discuss the issue,” he told report- ers when asked about the matter. “Everyone knows the truth and it is that 2-3 big industrialists are against farmers and Narendra Modi is in front,” he claimed. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also de- manded that there should be an inquiry into the role of the minister of state for home in the “conspir- acy” Congress chief spokesperson Ran- deep Surjewala also demanded sacking of Mishra. —ANI STORY SO FAR On October 3, 8 people, including 4 protesting farmers, died after being mowed down by a SUV belonging to Union Min Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish. The Central government has defended the minister and not allowed a discussion on his removal in the Lok Sabha. The UP government was pulled up by the Supreme Court for drag- ging its feet in the probe. Four farmers were killed when a vehicle in Ashish’s con- voy ran over the farmers pro- testing against the farm laws. Four others, including a jour- nalist, were killed in the vio- lence that followed. The Special Investigating Team has called it a “deliberate act of murder”. Had the Supreme Court not appointed a former judge and IPS officers of its choice, Ashish Mishra would have got away with the alleged murder. The farmers would have been brand- ed Khalistanis. Will the govern- ment still cling to Ajay Mishra or drop him like a hot potato? R ational security concerns have prevailed over degradation of the environment in Uttarakhand. Invariably, for one reason or another, de- velopment always wins over the environment. A Supreme Court Bench has allowed two- lane paved roads for the 900- km Chardham project in the interest of national security . The road project has come at the cost of massive felling of trees and after overcoming legal hurdles and protests from environmentalists. Justice DY Chandrachud, who headed the Bench, said that a balanced approach is needed when it comes to wid- ening of a strategic road and sustainable development. The Bench said that the infra- structuralneedsof thearmed forces for swift deployment cannot be ignored. An NGO “Citizens for Green Doon” sought the court’s direction to stop fell- ing of trees without prior clearance on the Ganeshpur- Dehradun stretch of the Del- hi-Dehradunexpressway .Citi- zen’s plea, though justified, came a bit too late as Dehra- dun and its adjoining areas had lost much of its greenery to rapacious individuals much before the Chardham road project got the govern- ment’s nod. Anyone going to Dehradun, and even to Queen of theHillsMussoorie, during summer will vouch that un- regulated construction and tree felling has ruined the city’s climate. The Chardham road pro- ject was initially aimed at facilitating pilgrims going to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gan- gotri and Yamunotri. The Centre’s notification in 2018 said that the road width in hilly terrain should not ex- ceed 5.5 metres. In 2020 the Defence Ministry wanted the width for three highways leading up to the China bor- der to be increased to 10 m. Skirmishes with China in Ladakh justified the minis- try’s request. Her recent visit to Mumbai to meet the stalwarts there and her statement… Where is the UPA? Has not gone down well with her “friends” in the Opposition camp. By already upsetting the Congress, TMC is now facing heat from Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena has taken strong exception to Mamata’s criticism of the Grand Old Party and her declaration of the Congress-led UPA being over, saying it is akin to strengthening today’s “fas- cist” government. Shiv Sena-Congress’ ally in Maharashtra, in an editorial in its mouthpiece Saamana, said strengthening the UPA is the only real option before the Opposition parties. The edito- rial said those who don’t ac- cept the Congress’ leadership of theUPAshouldsaysoclear- ly , as making statements “be- hind the curtain only leads to more suspicion”. Shiv Sena also specifically asked the Congress leader- ship Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to clarify their stand on what they plan to do re- garding UPA and they want- ed the party also to clearly spell out who would lead the alliance. “Although it is true that in West Bengal, she (Mamata) finished the Congress, the Left and the BJP, doing poli- tics by keeping Congress away from national politics is like strengthening today’s state with a fascist tendency ,” the Shiv Sena said in the Saamana editorial. “One can understand that (PM) Modi and the BJP want the Congress to be over. It is partof theirprogramme. But, if those fighting Modi and the BJP also feel that the Con- gress should be over, it is the biggest threat,” the Sena felt. Recently, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut met Rahul Gan- dhi and said there cannot be any opposition front without the Congress - a major mes- sage aimed at Mamata after she had asked “What UPA?” “There has to be only one opposition front against the BJP. An opposition front is not possible without the Con- gress. What is the point of two-three fronts? It will ben- efit the BJP,” Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP of the Shiv Sena, had told the media. Asked if Opposition par- ties would huddle to discuss pre-poll strategies against the might of BJP for the 2024 General Elections, Raut said: “I have asked Rahul Gandhi to take the lead on that.” However, his comment… “Who leads the front is some- thingallpartieshavetositand decide together…” will not be music to Mamata’s ears. Asked if Shiv Sena is try- ing to apply balm to the miffed relationship between the Congress and Mamata Banerjee, Raut went on to say: “Sharad Pawar Saab hai (we have NCP leader Sharad Pawar for that).” The meeting which took place clearly showed signs that the Congress and the Shiv Sena, part of the coali- tion government in Maha- rashtra, may be inching to- wards an understanding in a wider perspective. Congress sources are of the opinion that Sena might back the party in the state elections early next year. Though the Sena has (almost) negligible presence in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, the politi- cal message of extending sup- port to the Congress may re- veal the proximity of the two ideologically opposed parties which had to work very hard and bury the hatchet to come together politically . Some days ago, Sena “had strongly defended” the Con- gress especially in the light of West Bengal Chief Minis- ter’s attacks. After meeting with Shiv Sena leaders and the NCP’s Sharad Pawar in Mumbai, Mamata Banerjee had told re- porters: “What UPA? There is no UPA now? What is the UPA? We will clear all issues. Wewantastrongalternative.” “Deliberatelykeeping”Con- gress out of the fight of na- tional politics and creating an opposition forum parallel to the UPA would only strength- en the BJP and “fascist” forc- es, the Sena editorial said. “It is true that Mamata Ba- nerjee finished the Congress, Left and BJP in West Bengal. But keeping Congress out of national politics will amount to strengthening the current fascist forces. It is under- standable that (Prime Minis- ter Narendra) Modi and his BJP feel that Congress should be wiped out. This is part of their agenda. But it is more dangerous when those fight- ing against Modi and his ide- ology think that the Congress should be wiped out,” said the Saamna piece. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL I Although it is true that in West Bengal, she (Mamata) finished the Congress, the Left and the BJP, doing politics by keeping Congress away from national politics is like strengthening today’s state with a fascist tendency,” the Shiv Sena said in the Saamana editorial “One can understand that (PM) Modi and the BJP want the Congress to be over. After the breakup with the Omprakash Rajbhar-led Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, the BJP began to focus on alliances with the Apna Dal (S) and the Nishad Party. Now the BJP camp, engaged in countering Akhilesh Yadav’s strategy to mo- bilize OBC voters, is under pressure over the demands of its al- lies. Notably, BJP formed an alliance with Apna Dal (S) to make inroads in Kurmi voters, the sec- ond largest and power- ful OBC community af- ter Yadavs in UP. Anu- priya Patel’s party has a sway over this commu- nity. It has contested 2014, 2019 Lok Sabha elections and 2017 UP elections in alliance with BJP . In the 2017 assembly Apna Dal (S) won nine seats but only Jai Ku- mar Singh Jackie could become a minister of State in the Yogi govern- ment from the Apna Dal (S) quota. Anupriya wanted to get her hus- band Ashish Patel, an MLA, included in the Yogi cabinet, but things could not work out. Even after a long wait, Anupriya Patel was included as a Union minister in the cabinet expansion of the Modi government this year. Now her party is de- manding around 45 seats for an alliance with BJP in the 2022 elections. Most of these seats are from Central UP and Bundelkhand. Recently , there was a po- litical stir due to Anu- priya’s statement that politics is a game of pos- sibilities; it cannot be said now with whom she will be in alliance in future. After this, a buzz was created about the closeness of this party to the SP. However, BJP office-bearers refute any differences with the old ally. It would be worth mentioning that to woo the Nishad caste group, which has a pop- ulation of 4 percent in the state, the BJP formed an alliance with Nishad Party . But the issue of seat- sharing with this party has not been resolved yet. At the same time, Sanjay Nishad has been adopting an aggressive attitude over his old de- mand to include the Ni- shad community in the list of Scheduled Castes. Although BJP stalwart Amit Shah himself is taking the initiative to resolve all the issues related to this ally. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend a rally of Nishad party on Dec 17. It sets one apart and encourages the audi- ence to remember you, perhaps the most vital as- set in today’s information- heavy world where things and people are forgotten almost instantly . Especial- ly in a post-pandemic world where most educa- tion, as well as work, is virtual, businesses are work-from-home, if one is not able to create a Last- ing Impression ONLINE, one simply falls by the wayside! So what are the few key aspects that one must keep in mind in or- der to deliver great pres- entations? COMPLIMENT INSTEAD OF REPEATING Many times, there is a ten- dency for the content on one’s power-point slides to be the exact same thing that the presenter is ver- balizing. This is a rookie mistake that should be avoided. The content on thescreen/slidemustcom- pliment and support what the speaker is saying, not replicate it. This keeps the listener’s viewer’s inter- est high and makes for a more impactful, immer- sive presentation. PAUSE EFFECT A terribly underrated but vital tool; the power of ‘pause’ is invaluable in making an impactful pres- entation. There is a ten- dency to go faster as speakers become more passionate and excited about the content of their presentations. This is only natural. If however, we can be conscious of this tendency and check it, we will morph into much more powerful presenters. To take a breath, a pause, a beat at a juncture where one is sharing a vital sta- tistic, making an impor- tant point, soliciting an emotional response and connection through a symbolic story; the pres- entation will come across as well thought out and extremely deep. THE ACT OF DRAMA A great presentation ought to inspire and move people, jolt them, there has to be some flair to it. A great way of achieving this is by Dramatization, at least in certain parts. Think of yourself less as a presenter and more as a theatre artist. This way of thinking will automat- ically call on certain tricks being employed – varying the pace of your delivery, as if it were dia- logues. Or, using the en- tire length and breadth of the stage rather than ze- roing in on one position and sticking to it. Or, us- ing hand and body ges- tures liberally to illus- trate, demonstrate, and heighten the crucial points you are making. Treat it like an ‘enact- ment’. The light-hearted parts of your presenta- tion should have you morph into that senti- ment, with your tone and body language mirroring the emotion of that part of the content. Similarly, if you are making an in- spirational point, so should your body! Some of this might have limita- tions in an online space but one can still be theatrical rather than be downright monotonous. EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT Human beings love ‘hu- man’ stories. Elevate your presentations from being mundane selections of facts, figures and statis- tics, to anecdotal sharing of personal experiences. Use personal incidents to exemplify your points. It is these ‘slices of your life’ that will generate empathy, in- spiration and identifiability in your audi- ence, not mere facts alone. Your passion and sincerity is bound to come through via these person- al incidents, and THAT is when your presentations will become emotionally compelling! LET YOUR EYES TALK CONNECT Ditch the teleprompter, the computer, the screen and your presentation re- mote control. Look, con- nect, with your audience. Nothing spells confidence or generates a response more than human eye contact. Often engrossed in our presentations, we forget entirely about this. Be conscious of it. Divide your audience into three directional quadrants and regularly make eye contact with each section. Then they will recognize your courage, conviction, and passion. DO NOT LIE Last, my strong advice is, NO LIES. Do not lie about facts and figures, do not lie about knowing something if and when you don’t, and certainly do not makeup stories about your own inspi- rations and motives. They will almost never seem sincere, coming across as contrived and banal, and will be caught by your audi- ence in a flash. Be sin- cere. And this sincer- ity will reflect in your own tone, and be perceived as such, by your listen- ers. All the best! Present With Power! When Candy Crush was released in 2014, it became a hit for children and adults alike. Wherever we looked, whether it is on public transport, or on college campuses, or outside schools, multiple people had their heads stuck in the mobile game, sliding similar colored candies to match them up and get the adrenalin rush that comes from completing a level. However, no one spoke about a Candy Crush ban as it was not perceived as a danger- ous game. Now, mobile game lovers have turned to- wards yet another ad- dictive first-person shooter game - PUBG. Almost 400 million people around the world play Player Un- known’s BattleGrounds (PUBG). In each game, up to one hundred players para- chute onto an island and then look for weapons to kill the others without getting killed themselves. The last player or the last team standing wins the game. The thrill of being the last one standing, the instant gratification, and the rush of adrenalin - what’s not to like? Most of us simply keep coming back to PUBG for more. We cannot seem to get enough! The Battle Royal-style game is nothing new as sim- ilar games such as H1Z1, Fortnite, and Rules of Sur- vival have existed for years. So why is PUBG becoming such a big problem that states are calling for an out- rightbanonamobilegames? PUBG exposes children to a world of crime and nega- tive thinking, a top scientist has warned amid calls in some quarters to ensure that online games, particu- larly for kids, comply with best international stand- ards, regulations, and prac- tices. Reports said a 22-year- old man addicted to the multi-player combat game allegedly committed suicide at his home in Maharash- tra’s Yavatmal district, while a boy , aged 14, killed himself after a nightlong PUBG (PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds) session in Kota in Rajasthan in May. Last year, a 15-year-old boy from Bhiwandi in the Thane district of Maharashtra al- legedly killed his elder brother for scolding him overplaying PUBG on his mobile phone. PUBG does more harm than good. It ex- poses children to a world of crime and war. It does not enhance the skill or intellec- tual capability of players, especially children and ex- poses them to all kinds of negative thinking. It is a chance game and there will be a tendency to play until winning. With the amazing audio- visual features of PUBG along with its marketing tactics through online gam- ing events, incidents of vio- lence, self-harm, and news of accidents while traveling because of being absorbed in playing PUBG are mak- ing parents worry . PUBG: CONTROLS THE MIND? Gaming addiction is a real disorder recognised byWHO, but what does a gaming disorder do to our minds and bodies? After the news of a minor who was addicted to online games, Free Fire Pubg Dragon Squad andTeen Patti killed his younger cousin and buried his body. With the highly advanced au- diovisual features of PUBG along with its marketing tactics through online gaming events, such incidents of violence, self- harm, and news of accidents while traveling because of being absorbed in playing PUBG are making parents worry. City First spoke to a few people on the increasing impact of PUBG and how it affects mental and physical health! W PUBG mobile is free of cost, accessible to almost anyone, and doesn’t require any prerequisite skill to start playing. But every coin has two sides. Easy accessibility and no-cost have made PUBG avail- able to young children as well, who are getting easily influenced by the game.” —SUNEETA DUSAD, Home maker I was very startled to read the news recently. It is very sad to hear how these games affect the lives of people. Children need to be mentally strong. I also believe that anything done in limits is healthy. Playing PUBG ain’t a problem but getting deviated and losing mind is a huge problem.” —RAHUL TANK, Accountant Most games, even the violent ones, test your skills and reflexes. Here, it goes beyond and ticks that very base human characteristic of taking great pleasure in spoiling the fun of other players. In PUBG, surviving a round means that 99 other people did not and that itself is a huge surge of adrenaline.” —ARCHANA VYAS, Teacher You can play PUBG with your friends and voice chat in real-time! This is simi- lar to the approach of the popular PC game Counterstrike, and because of the human connection with other players, it could get very addictive. Both kids and adults lose track of time when playing, at the cost of ignoring studies, work or other activities. Strategizing to hit targets with peers gets the children excited and hooked onto these games.” —SAKSHI BOHRA, Medical student So basically PUBG is the ultimate mobile game for me because it’s free and a lot addictive! I play it with my friends and it’s a lot of fun to talk through the voice option while play- ing because it brings the gaming out. Especially now that I have a nice phone gaming is going to be a lot of fun. I think such news is subjective, a weak mind can do anything.” —RHYTHM PALIIKONDA, Student NOT JUST A
