BJP’S DOOR-TO-DOOR MASSIVE
OUTREACH DRIVE FROM TODAY
First India Bureau
Lucknow: The
Bharatiya Janata Par-
ty Uttar Pradesh will
launch a massive out-
reach drive from Tues-
day and will list the
Yogi-led government’s
achievements before
the public.
After the announce-
ment of the elections,
which will be held in
seven phases, the par-
ty will go door-to-door
adhering to Covid-19
protocols and estab-
lish a mass contact
with over one crore
people appealing them
to extend their support
once again to the party
.
The Bharatiya Ja-
nata Party has formed
groups of around five
people each constitut-

ers and public repre-
sentatives to create
awareness among peo-
ple of every village,
every city, every socie-
ty and especially
crores of beneficiaries
and women about the
various schemes of
the central and state
government.
With this door-to-
door mass contact
drive , the party work-
ers will distribute leaf-
lets showing the
achievements of the
government along
with masks and sani-
tizers to prevent the
spread of novel coro-
navirus at 1,74,000
booths.
Through this mass
contact drive, BJP will
work to strengthen its
base in the coming as-
sembly elections by
motivating the voters
of all sections and
groups of the state to
give their support to
the strong govern-
ment.
BJP workers will
make people aware of
various schemes of
the central and state
government.
The party workers
will inform the benefi-
ciaries about the
schemes like PM Awas
Yojana and CM Awas
Yojana, distribution of
free ration to 15 crore
people every month,
the Ujjwala scheme un-
der which free gas con-

Lucknow: Even as the
itinerary of its star-
campaigners for UP as-
sembly elections 2022 is
being fine tuned by the
high command, the
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) has sent a team of
165 party leaders each
from Gujarat, Haryana,
Maharashtra, Ra-
jasthan and Delhi who
will camp in the poll-
bound state to imple-
ment successful strate-
gies from their home
states.
To supervise constit-
uencies in every dis-
trict, the BJP will have
two MLAs, excluding
those already in charge
of the assembly seats,
taking stock of dis-
tricts.
The idea behind seek-
ing reinforecement
from other states is that
being ‘outsiders’ these
party workers will be
able to gauge the pulse
and prevailing political
situation.
Gujarat state BJP
vice-president and for-
mer BJP MLA of Surat
city Karanj assembly
seat, Janak Bagdana,
has been appointed
Pravasi Pramukh (visit-
ing president) for Uttar
Pradesh, assigning him
the responsibility of
working in the Awadh
zone, which has 71 as-
sembly seats across 11
districts and the cities
of Lucknow and Ayod-
hya.
Each state has to pre-
pare a list of 165 BJP
leaders who are former
MPs and MLAs or sen-
ior leaders in the party
organisation who have
earlier worked in other
states during elections.
Surat has been a sort of
backroom for Uttar
Pradesh elections —
when present BJP state
president CR Paatil was
put in charge of the
state and in 2014 when
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi was contest-
ing as for an MP seat
from Varanasi.
“Out of 165 members,
14 members are from
Uttar Pradesh and set-
tled in Gujarat, while
the others are from
across Gujarat. Our 165
members will stay in
Uttar Pradesh till the
assembly elections.
These members will
work on Panna Pra-
mukhcommittee,Booth
Pramukh committee,
Ward pramukh commit-
tee and make appropri-
ate appointments. Lat-
er, meetings of all will
be organised and they
will be trained. We will
create micro-level
teams for UP elections.
The accommodation
and transportation fa-
cility will be managed
by local BJP leaders in
the Awadh zone. My
role is to supervise the
arrangements and mon-
itor the progress of
work,” said a party
source.

for virtual polling has
come to haunt political

alike. Ironically
, most
politicians had initially
welcomed the decision
when the Election Com-
mission announced a
ban on political rallies
and meetings till Jau-
nary 15 and directed for
strict compliance of
Covid protocols in poll
campaigs.
On second thought,

issue. “We cannot pub-
licly oppose the ECI’s
decision on virtual cam-
paigning but the fact re-
mains that this will not
work in semi-urban and
rural constituencies.
The reality is that even
those who have smart-
phones, use them only to
watch movies and web
series. My own driver
sayshewillnotrecharge

cal events,” says a BJP
leader.
Whileallpartiesclaim
to have a definite pres-
ence in the virtual world
and exude confidence
about campaigning on
social media, it is the
candidates and aspir-
ants who are worried.
“Now that even cycle
rallieshavebeenbanned,
how do we connect with
our voters? Electioneer-
ing involves a personal
touch where you go and
meet voters, seek their
support and blessings.
You cannot expect to get

said an SP MLA.
He said there was in-
sufficienttimeforadoor-

“My constituency goes
to polls in the first phase
and I cannot cover the
entire constituency in
this manner. People

are not enough.” Several
candidates are now ap-
prehensive that if the
curbs continue beyond
January 15, it could im-
pact voter turnout. A
BSP candidate from
Kanpur said since there
was no physical cam-
paigning, voters cannot
be mobilised only
through social media.
“We know how diffi-
cult it is to get voters-es-
pecially those from edu-
cated class-to come out
and vote on the polling
day
. Most people prefer
to relax at home since it
is a holiday
,” he said.
Analysts, are still un-
sure about the impact
that virtual campaign-
ing will have on voter
turnout. Senior journal-
ist RK Singh said: “We
still don’t know how vir-
tual campaigning will
impact voter turnout.
There are still people
even in urban areas who
are not active on social

From today, health workers, frontline
workers and citizens above 60 years
of age across the country have started
getting the vaccine for protection
against Covid. Under the leadership of
Prime minister @narendramodi ji, he
has played an important role in giving
impetus to the ongoing vaccination
campaign. Be sure to get a ‘vaccine’.

ASSEMBLY POLL
he Election Commis-
sion’s decision to re-
strict physical cam-
paigning till January
15, has left political
parties to rely on virtual cam-
paigning. If Omicron cases con-
tinue to rise, they’ll only have a
virtual medium to reach out to
their voters. With its digital war
room better equipped and more
efficient the BJP is ahead of its
other political rivals. Samajwa-
di Party president Akhilesh Ya-
dav has asked the Election Com-
mission for funds to provide a
“level-playing field”. The BJP,
Akhilesh told the EC, has better
(digital) infrastructure and to
match it the regional parties
need to be funded. It is not only
the digital infrastructure but
also the financial resources in
which the BJP is way ahead of
its rivals. With IT and ED raids
on their purported financiers,
these parties find their channels
of funds choked.
The SP and BSP ought to have
worked on their digital set-up as
it has been in vogue since 2014.
Of course, the going would not
have been easy

marathon march
of about 94 km
over Karnataka’s Mekedatu

Mekedatu project is unlikely
to be resolved soon. Shivaku-
mar’s walk for water may not
serve any purpose other than
gaining political brownie
points over an emotive issue
and embarrassing the Basa-
varaj Bommai government.
The Mekedaku dam pro-
ject is caught in a legal battle
with the Tamil Nadu govern-
ment filing a batch of peti-
tions in the Supreme Court.
Tamil Nadu’s argument is
that the implementation of
the project will cost enor-
mous damage to the environ-
ment. The construction
work, Tamil Nadu claimed,
will affect large tracts of Re-
serve Forests and wildlife
sanctuaries. Karnataka’s ob-
jective is to provide adequate
drinking water to Bengaluru
and generate hydroelectrici-
ty. The dam’s construction
will block the free flow of wa-
ter into Tamil Nadu from Me-
kedaku area, which is the
last free point from Karna-
taka, as release of water will
be in the control of the BJP
government.

ments have led to the disap-
pearance of its many water
bodies. Shivakumar would do
well to first chalk out another

Tamil Nadu before starting
the dam’s construction.
The Congress leader’s defi-
ance against getting himself

ing Covid-19 protocol also de-
fies logic.

A
nfighting and in that matter to
be precise… unrest has been
an integral part of West Ben-
gal BJP especially since the
poll debacle on May 2, 2021. Of
late, the party has been hit by
a huge revolt within after Un-
ion minister of state for ship-
ping Santanu Thakur and sev-
eral newly-elected MLAs have
left the party’s WhatsApp
group for not getting posts in
the recent rejig in the party
stateunit’sorganizationunder
the leadership of Balurghat
MP Sukanta Majumdar.
The reshuffle within which
took place in December, saw
the ouster of several old-tim-
ers of the BJP and the emer-
gence of a section of youth
leaders,includingsomewitha
RSS background, in the par-
ty’s state unit. This, however,
dashedthehopesof manywho
did not get a place in the state
committee or other bodies
even after getting elected
through the ballot and had be-
comepeople’srepresentatives.
Coming a day after the BJP
was massively trounced in
the Kolkata municipal polls
and six months after the saf-
fron camp secured 77 of the
state’s 294 assembly seats
against the mighty TMC’s 213
(then), the strategic rejig was
undertaken following consul-
tation with the central lead-
ership in Delhi.
The general sentiment of
the old-timers was that prob-
ably, “There was no visible
effort to project people who
have worked with the Rash-
triya Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS), which used to be the
old practice, and keep out for-
mer TMC leaders.”
The West Bengal unit of
BJP announced its new state
committee on December 22
evening, replacing several
veterans and triggering un-
rest in the organisation by
retaining many who had
come from the TMC.
Most of those who quit the
group are followers of Santa-
nu Thakur, who is from the
Matua community and is also
MP from Bongaon region in
West Bengal. He was peeved
over the fact that he found
himself sidelined and none
of the five MLAs from the
community of Hindu mi-
grants (Matuas), who were on
his side, was included in any
of the committees.
Thakur even told report-
ers… “I will not say anything
now. I will act when the time is
right.”
Thakur is closely associ-
ated with the All India Matua
Mahasangha.
At the epicenter of vote
bank politics… Matuas… a
Scheduled Caste group with
a population of over 3 crore
across the state, have influ-
ence in over 70 assembly con-
stituencies and is spread
across North 24 Parganas,
South 24 Parganas, Nadia
and other smaller pockets of
South and North Bengal.
West Bengal has 10 out of
42 Lok Sabha constituencies
reserved for the Scheduled
Castes and has the second
highest SC population in the
country
. In the 2019 Lok Sab-
ha elections, the BJP man-
aged to win four of 10 SC
caste seats and thereby stir-
ring the Matua vote mainly
on the issue of the Citizen-
ship Amendment Bill.
As a result, this group be-
came extremely important
even for the TMC and both
parties have been focussing
on the Namasudra vote bank.
Thakur has spoken several
times over the delay in the
implementation of the Citi-
zenship (Amendment) Act.
Coming back to the recent
crisis in the BJP state unit,
thelegislatorswhoareunhap-
pyareAsimSarkarof Haring-
hata, Ambika Roy of Kalyani,
Subrata Thakur of Gaighata,
Mukut Mani Adhikari of
Ranaghat South and Ashok
Kirtaniya of Bongaon North
MLA. Subrata is also the
brother of Santanu. Santanu,
alongwiththefiveBJPMLAs,
had quit the party’s What-
sApp group on January 3.
He later said: “The present
leadership of the Bengal BJP
does not need me or the Mat-
uas’ vote bank. So, I do not
need to be there.” Having
said that… Santanu Thakur
held a closed-door meeting
and set four demands for the
appointment of the five
MLAs in various posts before
the party
.
Recently
, another MLA, Hi-
ran Chatterjee, left the party’s
WhatsApp group and vented
his ire by saying, “It is point-
less to be in the party’s What-
sApp group when I have not
been given any responsibility
.
The state leadership and the
central leadership are talking
differently on the affairs here.
Since I have been elected as
an MLA, I will rather keep
myself focused in that role
only,” said the actor-turned-
legislator from Kharagpur.
Reacting to the develop-
ment, BJP state president
Sukanta Majumdar said,
“We will sort out any misun-
derstanding with Thakur. He
is very much a part of the
BJP parivar.” Asked to com-
ment, Trinamool Congress
Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu
Sekhar Roy told reporters
that the BJP had used the
Matua community for its
own electoral gains.
“But it (BJP) was not con-
cerned about their real devel-
opment. It is clear now,” he
added.
On the other hand, Adhi-
kari went on to say that the
aspirations of the people of
his constituency may not get
fulfilled under the newly
formed BJP state committee.
Post May 2021… West Ben-
gal unit of BJP has been
hugely affected by defections,
infighting and unrest and it is
high time, the state unit Pres-
ident, Sukanta Majumdar, ad-
dresses these issues which
have been heavily pulling
down the party’s fortunes es-
pecially with the Lok Sabha
elections just two years away

New Delhi: The elec-
tions in five states are a
test of ambition of Aam
Aadmi Party’s national
convener and Delhi CM
Arvind Kejriwal. The
results of these elec-
tions may give wings to
his all-India political
ambitions or he may sit
in tatters. Although Ke-
jriwal has had the ambi-
tion of doing all-India
politics for a long time,
but after forming the
govt in Delhi for the sec-
ond time in 2020, his
hopes have increased.
This time he is expect-
ing good performances
in Punjab, Uttarakhand
and Goa. In Punjab, his
party is looking at the
possibility of forming
the govt. Several pre-
poll surveys have pro-
jected the AAP to be the
single largest party.
However, even in
the 2017 elections,
many survey agen-
cies were forming
the AAP govt in
Punjab. Fur-
thermore,
the BJP
has created a ‘wave of
sympathy’ towards
AAP by getting a BJP
leader elected as Mayor,
despite AAP winning
the Chandigarh Munic-
ipal Corporation elec-
tions.
In Uttarakhand, Ke-
jriwal has made retired
army officer Ajay Koti-
yal as the chief
ministerial candi-
date and is mak-
ing many lofty
claims rang-
ing from
free elec-
t r i c i t y,
water to employment.
In Goa too, he is contest-
ing elections on similar
promises. His attempt
is to open an account in
Uttarakhand. So their
effort in Goa is to some-
how win two-four seats
so that AAP can play a
role while forming the
govt in a hung assembly
.
He wants to get enough
seats in Punjab, Goa
and Uttarakhand that
his party can go ahead
to become a national
party
. After that he will
focus on Gujarat and
Himachal Pradesh.
A test of Kejriwal’s ambition!

Lucknow: Mayawati

mistake to say that her
Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP) is out of the race
in the assembly elec-
tions. And led by Pri-
yanka Gandhi Vadra,
the Congress hopes to
upset the balance with
its women-centric
agenda. Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, Union
Home Minister Amit
Shah, CM Yogi Adity-
anath other BJP lead-
ers have been targeting
Akhilesh Yadav, fur-
thering the impression
that they regard his SP
as the main challenger.
Banking on the Hin-
dutva plus development
plank, the BJP has it-
self crafted an alliance
with some Other Back-
ward Class parties for a
comeback bid in a state
where no party has won
two consecutive elec-
tions over the past 35
years.
The BJP has allied
with the Apna Dal (Son-
elal) and the Nishad
party, a combination of
backward castes. Akh-
ilesh Yadav is trying to
upset the BJP with the
help of a rainbow coali-
tion, which includes
Om Prakash Rajbhar’s
Suheldev Bharatiya Sa-

ally of the BJP in UP --
the Rashtriya Lok Dal
and uncle Shivpal Ya-
dav’s Pragatisheel Sa-

It is yet to be seen if
Priyanka Gandhi’s
women card — she has
even promised that 40
per cent of party tickets
will go to women —
would outplay the caste
and communal calcula-
tions of the main play-
ers. After Rahul Gandhi
lost the 2019 Lok Sabha
polls from the family
bastion of Amethi, the
party faces a big chal-
lenge of winning from
the five assembly seg-
ments in Rae Bareli —
party president Sonia
Gandhi’sparliamentary
constituency. Though
the BSP is not much vis-
ible on the ground or
digital platforms so far,
it support base lies
among the Dalits who
form about 20 percent
of the state’s popula-
tion. The 403-member
UP house has 86 re-
served seats for the
Scheduled Castes and
Scheduled Tribes.
With the UP polls
considered crucial for
the general elections in
2024, Arvind Kejriwal’s
Aam Aadmi Party and
Asaduddin Owaisi’s All
India Majlis-e-Ittehadul
Muslimeen are also try-
ing to expand their po-
litical presence in the
populous state. The poll
outcome will also have
a bearing on the Presi-
dential elections in
July. Before that 73 Ra-

BJP UNDER
PRESSURE IN
KALYANPUR
ASSEMBLY SEAT
Kanpur, which has remained a
BJP stronghold since the
Modi wave swept through the
country in 2014, will now see
tougher competition in many
seats, with the toughest expected
to be the Kalyanpur assembly
seat where Neelima Katiyar of the
BJP, who is currently the MLA
from Kalyanpur assembly seat
and is the daughter of former
MLA Premlata Katiyar, is facing
stiff competition from former SP
MLA Satish Nigam. There has
been a lot churning going on in
Lucknow regarding party tickets
to candidates on the basis of the
report card of the work done in
the assembly seat sent by booth
presidents. The report cards have
reiterated the need for harder
work to keep rivals at bay. The
people in the Kalyanpur assembly
seat have reportedly expressed
displeasure with the work done
by elected representatives during
the Covid pandemic, which has
given the opposition an
opportunity to attack the current
representative of the seat. The
coming elections amidst another
Covid wave may see an
interesting turn of events as
many leaders are afraid of not
bagging the ticket and some are
even considering switching sides.
Many veteran leaders are eager
to establish some connections
with the main rival, the SP, while
the Congress and BSP are yet to
show their cards ahead of the
elections. —Sumit Awasthi

Lucknow: Due to the
outbreak of Covid-19,
the Election Commis-
sion has has banned
any kind of rally or
road show of political
parties till January 15.
For this reason, all po-
litical parties in UP
have to focus their elec-
toral campaign on so-
cial media to reach out
to voters.
When it comes to the
use of social media,
BJP seems to be getting
the edge compared to
other parties because
the Saffron Party has
been active on social
platforms for a long
time. According to so-
cial media expert
Gaurav Senger, “It
would be pertinent to
say that PM Modi is in
the league of some of
the biggest global politi-
cians in terms of social
media presence. His so-
cial media presence is
intertwined with his
rise from Gujrat CM in
2012 to the national
stage as PM in 2014”.
In the 2014 and 2019
Lok Sabha elections
and 2017 UP elections,
the BJP has succeeded
to create an atmosphere
in its favor with better
use of social media. If
we analyse the Twitter
accounts of politicians
who have influence in
the UP elections, then
PM Modi is at the top of
the chart. He has 74.3
million followers, he
follows 2433 people.
Yogi has 16.8 million fol-
lowers and follows 50
people. After these two,
Akhilesh Yadav comes
in the popular category
on Twitter, whose Twit-
ter account has 15.4 mil-
lion followers and he
follows only 24 people.
Priyanka Gandhi’s ac-
count has 4.4 million
followers, she follows
191 accounts. BSP su-
premo Mayawati is a
politician who became
active on social media
after a long delay
.
Her blue ticked
Twitter account has
2.3 million followers.
She does not follow
any account other
than Twitter support.
It is evident from the
verified Twitter ac-
counts of the parties
that BJP-India has 17.3
million followers; BJP-
UP followed by 2.9 mil-
lion people. The Na-
tional Congress has
almost half of BJP’s
followers i.e. 8.4 mil-
lion , the party follows
2358 people on Twitter.
The followers of UP
Congress’s twitter
handle are only 461.4
thousand. The SP has
2.8 million followers,
so the party follows 52
people. There are only
24.5 thousand people
who follow BSP. If
we judge the political
parties according to
the overall presence
on social platforms the
resulting sequence in
the decreasing order
will be..BJP, SP, Con-
gress and BSP.
BJP EXPLOITS MATHURA SENTIMENT
TO STRENGTHEN POLL PROSPECTS
BJP’S UP CORE GROUP MEETING TODAY
Lucknow: Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath has said
that the one who has
guts will make Mathura.
“We will make temple
in Mathura like a grand
Ram temple was built in
Ayodhya,” the CM said
speaking to a news chan-
nel. When Uttar Pradesh
BJP tweeted this state-
ment from its Twitter
handle, it was speculated
that after Ayodhya, Kashi
it is now Mathura on
BJP’s agenda. Saints
welcomed this state-
ment. After the constant
tweets and statements
about Mathura, some
people are associating it
with the assembly elec-
tions. People believe that
the BJP on seeing itself
on the backfoot after the
farmers’ agitation has
started raising the issue
of Mathura. Through
Mathura, the BJP wants
to show its Hindutva im-
age among the people in
the polls. After this tweet
surfaced, some people
are also looking at the
CM’s ongoing chances of
contesting from Mathura.
Political experts see the
reason behind raising the
issue of Mathura by the
BJP for retaining its hold
which was weakened due
to the farmers’ agitation
in western UP. In 2017,
of 126 seats in western
UP, the BJP had won 109
seats.
The announcement of dates for the
UP assembly elections, has kick
started preparation for selection of
candidates by all the parties of the
state. The BJP’s State Election Com-
mittee met in Lucknow on Monday
ahead of a big meeting of the UP Core
Group in Delhi on Tuesday. The meet-
ing will have BJP President JP Nadda,
National Organization General Secre-
tary BL Santosh, CM Yogi Adityanath,
both Deputy chief ministers, State
President Swatantra Dev Singh and
Sunil Bansal along with possibilities
of Union Home Minister Amit Shah
attending the meeting. The leaders
will discuss about potential candi-
dates for various seats.Some names
of potential candidates have already
been decided following a survey
conducted by the BJP central leader-
ship and the meeting on Tuesday will
see discussion on all the aspects like
caste equation, position in the area,
chances of winning etc. CEC of the
BJP will also meet after 2-3 days and
take a final decision on the selection
of the candidates.

YOUR
DAY
Horoscope by
Saurabbh Sachdeva
ovindji is kind
enough to show me
around the Bhakars.
I see the cave where
Narayan Swamy
and Nepali Baba
lived and meditated.
There are others, one which
houses a Shivalinga with wa-
ter from the mountain cracks
dripping on it. Most of the
caves are under hangs under
massive boulders, where cav-
ities have been carved in the
boulders through erosion
over millions of years. It
gives me shivers to think
about a man living all alone
in such a wilderness. I trek
on, following an uneven pic-
turesque trail that takes me
to the other edge of the Bha-
kar. It has a well-kept cave,
complete with living rooms
where I am told Nepali Baba
later lived and meditated.
Here I am given an audience
of the present incumbent –
Baba Balak Giri who even
offers me a cup of hot re-
freshing tea.
The blue lake shimmering
in the afternoon sun lined by
undulating rocky formations
in a variety of shades of
brown and the city complete
with its other Bhakars, water
bodies and man-made struc-
tures extending into the ho-
rizon make for an enchant-
ing panoramic view. I click a
few pictures with my mobile
phone camera. As I explore a
cave, I come across a young
man and a young woman,
probably college students en-
grossed in each other’s com-
pany; the woman becomes a
little conscious as Govindji
and I negotiate the narrow
stretch inside the cave. Later,
I find the woman striking dif-
ferent poses and her friend
clicking happily indulging
his friend’s craze for getting
photographed. She would
most likely post the pictures
on social media as millions
of others around the world
do, drawing accolades from
family members and friends
and turning them into celeb-
rities in their own right.
I trek on further to the
North with the lake to my
East and the highest point of
the Bhakars – it has a Radar
installation of the Indian Air
Force – to my West. The slow-
ly rotating Radar that is
clearly visible even from long
distances serves as a promi-
nent land mark to me. Skirt-
ing around boulders, going
up and down rock-strewn
slopes and alternating be-
tween depressions and high
grounds, I come upon anoth-
er high ground that has a
lone white washed single sto-
ried house – a temple dedi-
cated to ‘Van Devi Maa’. This
is on the neighboring peak of
the Radar peak. I enjoy the
cool breeze standing atop the
huge and smooth boulders
for a while and click a few
more pictures. It’s a little
while later that I realize that
this high ground is really a
massive rocky overhang that
houses a cave beneath it. As I
trudge my way down, I come
across langoors, cows and
oxen being fed by a few peo-
ple. Jodhpur wallahs are ani-
mal lovers indeed! This hap-
pens to be the Bhim Bhadak
cave. Passing through an iron
grilled door, I get under the
rocky overhang. It’s a temple
built on two levels – the high-
er level appears to have a sa-
madhi and the lower level has
a Shivlinga. Soft twittering
sounds reach my ears. I look
around and spot a few birds
who have made their homes
in the crevices on the craggy
ceiling.
“Aap kahan se aaye hai,” a
voice from behind startles
me. As I turn around, I find
an amiable bearded Baba
who has just stepped out
from an alcove. I introduce
myself and we have a little
chit-chat, following which he
asks me to see the cave. “This
is the cave right,” I ask him.
In response, he points toward
a low entrance guarded by a
wooden door. I crouch and
lower myself into the dimly
lit serpentine cave and nego-
tiate my way cautiously to its
other end which has an altar
with framed pictures of dei-
ties and inscriptions.
Straight out of an Indiana
Jones movie! What if the
Baba locks the door behind
me and traps me here? The
not so noble thought flashes
across my mind. I quickly
make my way out of the cave,
thank the Baba and climb
back onto the rocky ledge. I
reach the edge of the preci-
pice and find a deep gorge
and another escarpment be-
yond it. I think of pressing
on, but decide to forgo it for
another day as my water bot-
tle is nearly empty. I trudge
down to the Bijolai Palace on
the other end. On my way
down, I stop at the Ganesh
Temple built on the hillock
across the water body adjoin-
ing the Bijolai palace. The
palace which was in ruins in
my childhood has been reno-
vated and serves as resort
and restaurant. I have a re-
freshing cup of tea sitting in
the courtyard adjoining the
water body while reminisc-
ing the day’s adventure – ex-
ploring the Bhakars.

To supervise constit- uencies in every dis- trict, the BJP will have two MLAs, excluding those already in charge of the assembly seats, taking stock of dis- tricts. Under the leadership of Prime minister @narendramodi ji, he has played an important role in giving impetus to the ongoing vaccination campaign. Be sure to get a ‘vaccine’. Piyush Goyal @PiyushGoyal Govt’s policy on ‘Prashasan Gaon Ki Aur’ is taking essential services to every citizen. Tremendous possibilities for startups to improve last-mile delivery of these services through value addition. TOP TWEETS THE DIGITAL DIVIDE GIVES BJP TACTICAL ADVANTAGE IN UP ASSEMBLY POLL he Election Commis- sion’s decision to re- strict physical cam- paigning till January 15, has left political parties to rely on virtual cam- paigning. If Omicron cases con- tinue to rise, they’ll only have a virtual medium to reach out to their voters. With its digital war room better equipped and more efficient the BJP is ahead of its other political rivals. Samajwa- di Party president Akhilesh Ya- dav has asked the Election Com- mission for funds to provide a “level-playing field”. The BJP, Akhilesh told the EC, has better (digital) infrastructure and to match it the regional parties need to be funded. It is not only the digital infrastructure but also the financial resources in which the BJP is way ahead of its rivals. With IT and ED raids on their purported financiers, these parties find their channels of funds choked. The SP and BSP ought to have worked on their digital set-up as it has been in vogue since 2014. Of course, the going would not have been easy . T t the heart of Con- gress leader DK S h iva k u m a r ’s marathon march of about 94 km over Karnataka’s Mekedatu project may be yet another watersharingrowwithTamil Nadu. And, like the Cauvery water sharing dispute, the Mekedatu project is unlikely to be resolved soon. Shivaku- mar’s walk for water may not serve any purpose other than gaining political brownie points over an emotive issue and embarrassing the Basa- varaj Bommai government. The Mekedaku dam pro- ject is caught in a legal battle with the Tamil Nadu govern- ment filing a batch of peti- tions in the Supreme Court. Tamil Nadu’s argument is that the implementation of the project will cost enor- mous damage to the environ- ment. The construction work, Tamil Nadu claimed, will affect large tracts of Re- serve Forests and wildlife sanctuaries. Karnataka’s ob- jective is to provide adequate drinking water to Bengaluru and generate hydroelectrici- ty. The dam’s construction will block the free flow of wa- ter into Tamil Nadu from Me- kedaku area, which is the last free point from Karna- taka, as release of water will be in the control of the BJP government. Thethemeof Shivakumar’s 10-day march “Namma Neeru Namma Hakku” (our water, our right) should not lead to parched throats in Tamil Naduwhereshortageisequal- ly, if not more, acute than in Bengaluru where encroach- ments have led to the disap- pearance of its many water bodies. Shivakumar would do well to first chalk out another water-sharing formula with Tamil Nadu before starting the dam’s construction. The Congress leader’s defi- ance against getting himself tested for Covid while defy- ing Covid-19 protocol also de- fies logic. CONG STIRS ANOTHER DISCORD OVER WATER Shivakumar’s walk for water may not serve any purpose other than gaining political brownie points over an emotive issue and embarrassing the Basavaraj Bommai government A nfighting and in that matter to be precise… unrest has been an integral part of West Ben- gal BJP especially since the poll debacle on May 2, 2021. Of late, the party has been hit by a huge revolt within after Un- ion minister of state for ship- ping Santanu Thakur and sev- eral newly-elected MLAs have left the party’s WhatsApp group for not getting posts in the recent rejig in the party stateunit’sorganizationunder the leadership of Balurghat MP Sukanta Majumdar. The reshuffle within which took place in December, saw the ouster of several old-tim- ers of the BJP and the emer- gence of a section of youth leaders, includingsomewitha RSS background, in the par- ty’s state unit. This, however, dashedthehopesof manywho did not get a place in the state committee or other bodies even after getting elected through the ballot and had be- comepeople’srepresentatives. Coming a day after the BJP was massively trounced in the Kolkata municipal polls and six months after the saf- fron camp secured 77 of the state’s 294 assembly seats against the mighty TMC’s 213 (then), the strategic rejig was undertaken following consul- tation with the central lead- ership in Delhi. The general sentiment of the old-timers was that prob- ably, “There was no visible effort to project people who have worked with the Rash- triya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which used to be the old practice, and keep out for- mer TMC leaders.” The West Bengal unit of BJP announced its new state committee on December 22 evening, replacing several veterans and triggering un- rest in the organisation by retaining many who had come from the TMC. Most of those who quit the group are followers of Santa- nu Thakur, who is from the Matua community and is also MP from Bongaon region in West Bengal. He was peeved over the fact that he found himself sidelined and none of the five MLAs from the community of Hindu mi- grants (Matuas), who were on his side, was included in any of the committees. Thakur even told report- ers… “I will not say anything now. I will act when the time is right.” Thakur is closely associ- ated with the All India Matua Mahasangha. At the epicenter of vote bank politics… Matuas… a Scheduled Caste group with a population of over 3 crore across the state, have influ- ence in over 70 assembly con- stituencies and is spread across North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia and other smaller pockets of South and North Bengal. West Bengal has 10 out of 42 Lok Sabha constituencies reserved for the Scheduled Castes and has the second highest SC population in the country . In the 2019 Lok Sab- ha elections, the BJP man- aged to win four of 10 SC caste seats and thereby stir- ring the Matua vote mainly on the issue of the Citizen- ship Amendment Bill. As a result, this group be- came extremely important even for the TMC and both parties have been focussing on the Namasudra vote bank. Thakur has spoken several times over the delay in the implementation of the Citi- zenship (Amendment) Act. Coming back to the recent crisis in the BJP state unit, thelegislatorswhoareunhap- pyareAsimSarkarof Haring- hata, Ambika Roy of Kalyani, Subrata Thakur of Gaighata, Mukut Mani Adhikari of Ranaghat South and Ashok Kirtaniya of Bongaon North MLA. Subrata is also the brother of Santanu. Santanu, alongwiththefiveBJPMLAs, had quit the party’s What- sApp group on January 3. He later said: “The present leadership of the Bengal BJP does not need me or the Mat- uas’ vote bank. So, I do not need to be there.” Having said that… Santanu Thakur held a closed-door meeting and set four demands for the appointment of the five MLAs in various posts before the party . Recently , another MLA, Hi- ran Chatterjee, left the party’s WhatsApp group and vented his ire by saying, “It is point- less to be in the party’s What- sApp group when I have not been given any responsibility . The state leadership and the central leadership are talking differently on the affairs here. Since I have been elected as an MLA, I will rather keep myself focused in that role only,” said the actor-turned- legislator from Kharagpur. Reacting to the develop- ment, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said, “We will sort out any misun- derstanding with Thakur. He is very much a part of the BJP parivar.” Asked to com- ment, Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy told reporters that the BJP had used the Matua community for its own electoral gains. “But it (BJP) was not con- cerned about their real devel- opment. It is clear now,” he added. On the other hand, Adhi- kari went on to say that the aspirations of the people of his constituency may not get fulfilled under the newly formed BJP state committee. Post May 2021… West Ben- gal unit of BJP has been hugely affected by defections, infighting and unrest and it is high time, the state unit Pres- ident, Sukanta Majumdar, ad- dresses these issues which have been heavily pulling down the party’s fortunes es- pecially with the Lok Sabha elections just two years away . THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL WHAT’S UP WITH WEST BENGAL’S BJP UNIT? I He later said: “The present leadership of the Bengal BJP does not need me or the Matuas’ vote bank. The results of these elec- tions may give wings to his all-India political ambitions or he may sit in tatters. Although Ke- jriwal has had the ambi- tion of doing all-India politics for a long time, but after forming the govt in Delhi for the sec- ond time in 2020, his hopes have increased. This time he is expect- ing good performances in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa. In Punjab, his party is looking at the possibility of forming the govt. Several pre- poll surveys have pro- jected the AAP to be the single largest party. However, even in the 2017 elections, many survey agen- cies were forming the AAP govt in Punjab. Fur- thermore, the BJP has created a ‘wave of sympathy’ towards AAP by getting a BJP leader elected as Mayor, despite AAP winning the Chandigarh Munic- ipal Corporation elec- tions. In Uttarakhand, Ke- jriwal has made retired army officer Ajay Koti- yal as the chief ministerial candi- date and is mak- ing many lofty claims rang- ing from free elec- t r i c i t y, water to employment. In Goa too, he is contest- ing elections on similar promises. His attempt is to open an account in Uttarakhand. So their effort in Goa is to some- how win two-four seats so that AAP can play a role while forming the govt in a hung assembly . He wants to get enough seats in Punjab, Goa and Uttarakhand that his party can go ahead to become a national party . After that he will focus on Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. A test of Kejriwal’s ambition! • 8. Lucknow: Mayawati has said it would be a mistake to say that her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is out of the race in the assembly elec- tions. And led by Pri- yanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress hopes to upset the balance with its women-centric agenda. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Yogi Adity- anath other BJP lead- ers have been targeting Akhilesh Yadav, fur- thering the impression that they regard his SP as the main challenger. Banking on the Hin- dutva plus development plank, the BJP has it- self crafted an alliance with some Other Back- ward Class parties for a comeback bid in a state where no party has won two consecutive elec- tions over the past 35 years. The BJP has allied with the Apna Dal (Son- elal) and the Nishad party, a combination of backward castes. Akh- ilesh Yadav is trying to upset the BJP with the help of a rainbow coali- tion, which includes Om Prakash Rajbhar’s Suheldev Bharatiya Sa- maj Party -- a former ally of the BJP in UP -- the Rashtriya Lok Dal and uncle Shivpal Ya- dav’s Pragatisheel Sa- majwadi Party (Lohia). It is yet to be seen if Priyanka Gandhi’s women card — she has even promised that 40 per cent of party tickets will go to women — would outplay the caste and communal calcula- tions of the main play- ers. After Rahul Gandhi lost the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from the family bastion of Amethi, the party faces a big chal- lenge of winning from the five assembly seg- ments in Rae Bareli — party president Sonia Gandhi’sparliamentary constituency. Though the BSP is not much vis- ible on the ground or digital platforms so far, it support base lies among the Dalits who form about 20 percent of the state’s popula- tion. The 403-member UP house has 86 re- served seats for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. With the UP polls considered crucial for the general elections in 2024, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party and Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen are also try- ing to expand their po- litical presence in the populous state. The poll outcome will also have a bearing on the Presi- dential elections in July. Before that 73 Ra- jya Sabha members would have retired, in- cluding 11 from UP. Buoyed by the mas- sive assembly election victory in home state West Bengal last year, the Trinamool Con- gress is vying the Con- gress space in the oppo- sition and contesting the polls in Goa and Manipur. In UP, howev- er, Mamata Banerjee’s party has indicated that it would not take the plunge and instead help Akhilesh Yadav. There has been a lot churning going on in Lucknow regarding party tickets to candidates on the basis of the report card of the work done in the assembly seat sent by booth presidents. The report cards have reiterated the need for harder work to keep rivals at bay. The people in the Kalyanpur assembly seat have reportedly expressed displeasure with the work done by elected representatives during the Covid pandemic, which has given the opposition an opportunity to attack the current representative of the seat. The coming elections amidst another Covid wave may see an interesting turn of events as many leaders are afraid of not bagging the ticket and some are even considering switching sides. Many veteran leaders are eager to establish some connections with the main rival, the SP, while the Congress and BSP are yet to show their cards ahead of the elections. —Sumit Awasthi WHO WILL BE NEXT KANPUR POLICE COMMISSIONER? For this reason, all po- litical parties in UP have to focus their elec- toral campaign on so- cial media to reach out to voters. When it comes to the use of social media, BJP seems to be getting the edge compared to other parties because the Saffron Party has been active on social platforms for a long time. According to so- cial media expert Gaurav Senger, “It would be pertinent to say that PM Modi is in the league of some of the biggest global politi- cians in terms of social media presence. His so- cial media presence is intertwined with his rise from Gujrat CM in 2012 to the national stage as PM in 2014”. In the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections and 2017 UP elections, the BJP has succeeded to create an atmosphere in its favor with better use of social media. If we analyse the Twitter accounts of politicians who have influence in the UP elections, then PM Modi is at the top of the chart. He has 74.3 million followers, he follows 2433 people. Yogi has 16.8 million fol- lowers and follows 50 people. After these two, Akhilesh Yadav comes in the popular category on Twitter, whose Twit- ter account has 15.4 mil- lion followers and he follows only 24 people. Priyanka Gandhi’s ac- count has 4.4 million followers, she follows 191 accounts. BSP su- premo Mayawati is a politician who became active on social media after a long delay . Her blue ticked Twitter account has 2.3 million followers. She does not follow any account other than Twitter support. It is evident from the verified Twitter ac- counts of the parties that BJP-India has 17.3 million followers; BJP- UP followed by 2.9 mil- lion people. The Na- tional Congress has almost half of BJP’s followers i.e. 8.4 mil- lion , the party follows 2358 people on Twitter. The followers of UP Congress’s twitter handle are only 461.4 thousand. The SP has 2.8 million followers, so the party follows 52 people. There are only 24.5 thousand people who follow BSP. BJP EXPLOITS MATHURA SENTIMENT TO STRENGTHEN POLL PROSPECTS BJP’S UP CORE GROUP MEETING TODAY Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that the one who has guts will make Mathura. “We will make temple in Mathura like a grand Ram temple was built in Ayodhya,” the CM said speaking to a news chan- nel. When Uttar Pradesh BJP tweeted this state- ment from its Twitter handle, it was speculated that after Ayodhya, Kashi it is now Mathura on BJP’s agenda. Saints welcomed this state- ment. After the constant tweets and statements about Mathura, some people are associating it with the assembly elec- tions. People believe that the BJP on seeing itself on the backfoot after the farmers’ agitation has started raising the issue of Mathura. Through Mathura, the BJP wants to show its Hindutva im- age among the people in the polls. After this tweet surfaced, some people are also looking at the CM’s ongoing chances of contesting from Mathura. Political experts see the reason behind raising the issue of Mathura by the BJP for retaining its hold which was weakened due to the farmers’ agitation in western UP. In 2017, of 126 seats in western UP, the BJP had won 109 seats. The announcement of dates for the UP assembly elections, has kick started preparation for selection of candidates by all the parties of the state. The BJP’s State Election Com- mittee met in Lucknow on Monday ahead of a big meeting of the UP Core Group in Delhi on Tuesday. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva ovindji is kind enough to show me around the Bhakars. I see the cave where Narayan Swamy and Nepali Baba lived and meditated. There are others, one which houses a Shivalinga with wa- ter from the mountain cracks dripping on it. Most of the caves are under hangs under massive boulders, where cav- ities have been carved in the boulders through erosion over millions of years. It gives me shivers to think about a man living all alone in such a wilderness. I trek on, following an uneven pic- turesque trail that takes me to the other edge of the Bha- kar. It has a well-kept cave, complete with living rooms where I am told Nepali Baba later lived and meditated. Here I am given an audience of the present incumbent – Baba Balak Giri who even offers me a cup of hot re- freshing tea. The blue lake shimmering in the afternoon sun lined by undulating rocky formations in a variety of shades of brown and the city complete with its other Bhakars, water bodies and man-made struc- tures extending into the ho- rizon make for an enchant- ing panoramic view. I click a few pictures with my mobile phone camera. As I explore a cave, I come across a young man and a young woman, probably college students en- grossed in each other’s com- pany; the woman becomes a little conscious as Govindji and I negotiate the narrow stretch inside the cave. Later, I find the woman striking dif- ferent poses and her friend clicking happily indulging his friend’s craze for getting photographed. She would most likely post the pictures on social media as millions of others around the world do, drawing accolades from family members and friends and turning them into celeb- rities in their own right. I trek on further to the North with the lake to my East and the highest point of the Bhakars – it has a Radar installation of the Indian Air Force – to my West. The slow- ly rotating Radar that is clearly visible even from long distances serves as a promi- nent land mark to me. Skirt- ing around boulders, going up and down rock-strewn slopes and alternating be- tween depressions and high grounds, I come upon anoth- er high ground that has a lone white washed single sto- ried house – a temple dedi- cated to ‘Van Devi Maa’. This is on the neighboring peak of the Radar peak. I enjoy the cool breeze standing atop the huge and smooth boulders for a while and click a few more pictures. It’s a little while later that I realize that this high ground is really a massive rocky overhang that houses a cave beneath it. As I trudge my way down, I come across langoors, cows and oxen being fed by a few peo- ple. Jodhpur wallahs are ani- mal lovers indeed! This hap- pens to be the Bhim Bhadak cave. Passing through an iron grilled door, I get under the rocky overhang. It’s a temple built on two levels – the high- er level appears to have a sa- madhi and the lower level has a Shivlinga. Soft twittering sounds reach my ears. I look around and spot a few birds who have made their homes in the crevices on the craggy ceiling. “Aap kahan se aaye hai,” a voice from behind startles me. As I turn around, I find an amiable bearded Baba who has just stepped out from an alcove. I introduce myself and we have a little chit-chat, following which he asks me to see the cave. “This is the cave right,” I ask him. In response, he points toward a low entrance guarded by a wooden door. I crouch and lower myself into the dimly lit serpentine cave and nego- tiate my way cautiously to its other end which has an altar with framed pictures of dei- ties and inscriptions. Straight out of an Indiana Jones movie! What if the Baba locks the door behind me and traps me here? The not so noble thought flashes across my mind. I quickly make my way out of the cave, thank the Baba and climb back onto the rocky ledge. I reach the edge of the preci- pice and find a deep gorge and another escarpment be- yond it. I think of pressing on, but decide to forgo it for another day as my water bot- tle is nearly empty. I trudge down to the Bijolai Palace on the other end. On my way down, I stop at the Ganesh Temple built on the hillock across the water body adjoin- ing the Bijolai palace. The palace which was in ruins in my childhood has been reno- vated and serves as resort and restaurant. I have a re- freshing cup of tea sitting in the courtyard adjoining the water body while reminisc- ing the day’s adventure – ex- ploring the Bhakars. CONTINUED...
