(PTI) Security agencies
including the NIA,
probing the “heinous”
murder of a tailor in
Udaipur, will conduct
an Internet Protocol De-

case, officials said on
Sunday
.
They said it would
help in ascertaining
whether there was a
radicalisation pro-
gramme being run by
Karachi-based Dawat-e-
Islami religious group.
One of the four accused
was linked with the JeI,
according to the agen-
cies. The Rajasthan Po-
lice has, with the help
of central security
agencies, arrested the
four people so far over
the murder of Kanhai-
ya Lal on June 28 inside
his tailoring shop.
Besides these two ac-
cused, against whom
the evidence is a self-
shot video, the security
agencies also nabbed
two more. The officials
said that an IPDR analy-
sis would be carried out
on their phones to
check their activities on
the Internet.

Meena said that the
main accused
in Karauli has not
been caught to date
nor has any effective
action been taken.
“An atmosphere of
fear is increasing in

DISTORTION ON A
GLOBAL SCALE
fter skirmishes over

dia and US look
poised for a trade
war over farm subsi-
dies. At the 12th World Trade
Organisation ministerial con-
ference India had made its stand
clear on subsidies to farmers
and fishermen and stood its
ground. Farm subsidies, which
are capped at 10 percent of the
value of production, have been
breached by India in view of the
pandemic. They therefore re-
main a prickly area between In-
dia and the US. Twelve law-mak-
ers have written a letter to Joe
Biden against the “dangerous
trade practices” by continuing
to subsidise more than half the
value of production. India’s
“lack of rule-following” has put
American producers at a disad-
vantage, the lawmakers said and
blamed the Biden administra-
tion for “lack of enforcement”.
They said that “India’s practices
are dangerously trade distort-
ing on a global scale”.
For far too long the rich na-
tions have kept developing na-
tions at a “disproportionate dis-
advantage” and now is the time
for them to feel the pinch.

Collaborative goal setting
 employee engagement
y association with senior in-
dustry leaders and corporate
directors over past decade
and half has pointedly
brought forward one particu-
lar aspect of employee en-
gagement. While most com-
panies recognize that em-
ployee engagement is good
for their business, poor re-
tention and motivation af-
fects their productivity and
finally reflects on their prof-
itability. It’s logical that
workers who have an emo-
tional connect to their jobs,
managers and environment
will obviously put in their
heart and soul to work and
thus be more productive. In
fact, there’s plenty of re-
search showing that employ-
ee engagement has a direct
impact on company’s perfor-
mance and profitability. But
how employee engagement
in an organization is defined
will dictate the congeniality
at work place.
The truth is that the con-
cept of employee engage-
ment is somewhat incompre-
hensive and carries different
meaning to different people.
And therefore, many organi-
zations have indistinct and
dispassionate goals for em-
ployee engagement.
So, what could be the Col-
laborative Goals when it
comes to employee engage-
ment? In my personal opin-
ion, unlike the conventional
model where in a manager
determines the direction of
an employee’s work, collabo-
rative goals are agreed
through consultation, analy-
sis, listening, prioritising
and assessing targets and
objectives together with em-
ployees. It’s a translucent
process that makes work
force believe they’re being
listened to and included in
the company’s frame work.
In addition to setting clear
collaborative goals, I would
emphasise that employees
work well when they are
faced with challenging goals
as handling these difficult
goals forces them to work un-
tiringly and that helps them
develop new skill sets and as
a result, receive positive feed-
back and an overall sense of
achievement.
Now the question arises if
a strategic suggestion or de-
sign be recommended for for-
mation of goals. Yes, as a
keen observer and corporate
trainer I would suggest a
four-prong rational for set-
ting goals. That is a mix of
clarity, brevity, commitment
and feedback. Goals must be
clear and specific for work-
ers to understand the objec-
tives and deadlines. As also,
goals should be laid out in
simple language for employ-
ees to focus upon. And final-
ly, goals should be broken
down into smaller goals with
timeline for each.
Having decided on the col-
laborative goals, concentrate
on essential drivers for em-
ployee engagement. While for
some the priority may be to
improve retention ratio, for
others it could be reducing
absenteeism and yet some
may move on to the final
stage of building a high-per-
formance culture and feeling
of ownership by employees.
However, understand that
managers and leaders need to
be sensitive to employee en-
gagement vision.
So, may we say there needs
to be a process that compa-
nies ought to follow to
achieve this? My answer
would in affirmative. Having
worked with industries both
in services and manufactur-
ing sectors, I opine that sen-
ior leaders need to focus on
three unavoidable principles
which are, firstly, linking
personal goals of employees
to organizational ambitions
to establish accountability.
Secondly
, Keep the communi-
cation channels open. And
finally
, managers and leaders
have to be on guard to iden-
tify possible risks that could
inhibit one from reaching
desired destination? How
these bottle necks are man-
aged and negotiated will dis-
play the vision of the leaders.
Therefore, flexibility and
agility hold the key to suc-
cess and mid-course correc-
tion.
To achieve the objective,
many business thought lead-
ers, world over, have laid out
a number of active and pas-
sive techniques for corpo-
rates to set and communicate
goals. But I believe that the
SMART model theory still
remains the best and effec-
tive way to achieving employ-
ee engagement. Actually,
SMART is an acronym that
stands for Specific, Measur-
able, Aggressive, Realistic
and Time-bound goal setting
technique that caters for ac-
countability of each employ-
ee, aligning of personal goals
with broad company policies
and a fool proof system and a
process bound by deadlines
and targets.
Remember, Goal setting in-
deed is a complex issue and
the errors in embedding
them may cause some seri-
ous disadvantages to raise
ugly heads. Therefore, corpo-
rates should guard against
four main problems associ-
ated with team goals which
are lack of leadership, fuzzy
focus, stuck in sameness and
perfectionism. If teams can’t
adapt and innovate, then
team members tend to par-
ticipate in group thinking
leading to the same old
thought repeatedly. If new
ideas aren’t generated, the
organization would lose the
cutting edge in the market
pie. Without a strong leader,
the direction of the company
will be in an anonymous di-
rection and that in turn will
lead to vague goals that will
be hard for the employees to
follow along.

(PTI): Kerala Chief
Minister Pinarayi Vi-

Minister Narendra
Modi to intervene in
the issue of rising air
fares in the country,
saying that it was not
only causing hardship
to non-resident Indians
(NRIs), but was also af-
fecting revival of the
tourism sector.
Besides rising air
fares, another issue
which Vijayan drew the
PM’s attention to was
the railways decision
to abandon the Nemom

project in Thiruvanan-
thapuram.
He sought PM Modi’s
intervention for recon-
sidering abandoning of
the project and to in-
stead ensure that it gets
early approval.
Both the issues were
raised by Vijayan in
separate letters ad-
dressed to the Prime
Minister on July 2.
He said airline tick-

high” compared to pre-

situation is affecting
NRIs. He said Kerala’s
tourism sector is on the

fares “are a serious
dampener to the revival
of this sector”.

Chennai: The contro-
versy in the main op-
position party of Tamil
Nadu - Anna DMK has
started again and it is
believed that this time
the dispute will be de-
cisive. O Panneersel-
vam and E Palaniswa-
mi, the two leaders
who were heading the
party after Jay-
alalithaa’s death, have
parted ways. The
Palaniswami camp has
taken over the party. In
the last meeting of the
General Council of the
party, the post of Coor-
dinator and Joint Coor-
dinator was abolished
and all the powers of
Panneerselvam were
taken away. The next
meeting of the General
Council is to be held on
July 11, but till then all
the power is in the
hands of EPS i.e.
Palaniswami.
Interestingly, amidst
this tussle between the
two camps, on June 26,
VK Sasikala started
her journey around the
state. She held a big
program, which was
supported by Anna
DMK workers. Keep in
mind that she had re-
turned from Bangalore
jail just before the last
election and then it was
reported quoting sourc-
es that BJP had asked
her to stay away from
politics. It was the BJP
that had brought about
a reconciliation be-
tween the OPS and EPS
camps. Now both the
camps are scattered
and Sasikala has be-
come active in politics,
and it is believed that
BJP is behind this de-
velopment. Actually
BJP is eyeing Anna
DMK, but the saffron
party has no face to
control it. This work
can be done through
Sasikala. But the trou-
ble is that her face is
very infamous and yet,
the BJP is playing some
bets. So, after July 11, it
will be known what
game is happening in
the state and to what
extent BJP is involved
in that game.

New Delhi: The Con-
gress party has handed
over the command of
Haryana politics al-
most entirely to
Bhupinder Singh Hoo-
da. But at the same
time, the party high
command is also work-
ing to strike a balance
in the politics of the
state. Randeep Singh
Surjewala was first
‘balanced’ as after
handing over the com-
mand of the state to
Hooda, Surjewala was
made a member of the
Rajya Sabha from Ra-
jasthan but was also
removed from the post
of media in-charge.
Now he is the general
secretary of the party
and is in-charge of
Karnataka. As soon as
he was removed from
the post of media in-
charge, his face has
disappeared from the
media and reportedly,
Hooda camp is satis-
fied with this develop-
ment.
After balancing Sur-
jewala, the party made
Kumari Selja a mem-
ber of the Congress
Working Committee.
Keep in mind that she
is the Dalit face of the
party and was the state
president of Congress
for years. Her Rajya
Sabha seat was taken
by Hooda for his son in
the last election. By
making her a member
of the working com-
mittee, the party has
struck a perfect bal-
ance. Hooda is the lead-
er of the legislature
party and his close
aide Udaybhan is the
state president. The
second big leader has
been made the national
general secretary by
the party and the third
leader has been nomi-
nated in the working
committee. Now it re-
mains to be seen how
long this balance lasts
and how effective it
will be in the next
election.

Jaipur: There is a say-
ing in Hindi, “Poot Ke
Paon Palne Mein Hi
Dikh Jaate Hain.” This
saying fits perfectly on
Rajasthan’s daughter -
IRS Prateeti Goyal, a
2016 batch officer who
in merely 5 years of
her service has proved
her abilities and matu-
rity as a result of
which she has been
honoured at the na-
tional level. She is the
daughter of senior IAS
of Rajasthan cadre -
Pawan Kumar Goyal.
At present Prateeti is
serving as Deputy Com-
missioner CGST ( Anti
Evasion) and has been
serving on this post for
the past 18 months. But
in these 18 months, she
has given a stellar per-
formance. On Friday,

her primary education
from Jaipur’s SMS Pub-
lic School after which
she graduated from the
National Law Universi-
ty at Jodhpur with a

2016, she became an IRS
and started her career
and her first posting
was that of Assistant
Commissioner at
Jaipur. From here she
was promoted to Deputy
Commissioner and
transferred to Mumbai.
The Certification of Ap-
preciation accorded to
her reads, “Awarded
this certificate for ren-
dering dedicated and
meritorious service and
promoting excellence in
administrationof GST.”
Notably, Prateeti’s
husband, Neeraj
Agrawal, is also an IRS
and is currently serv-
ing as Deputy Commis-
sioner in Mumbai. Her
father, PK Goyal, is
serving as ACS, Educa-
tion in Government of

stained-glass win-

when the sun is
out, but when the
darkness sets in
their true beauty is re-
vealed only if there is
light from within. This is
also true in the fashion
industry. City First had a
conversation with the
model, Megha Shyam Soni
about her journey.
Describe yourself, and
what would you say are
some vital skills or
characteristics to
have to make it in
the modelling
world?
To introduce
myself, my name is
Megha Shyam and a
very spiritual person and
a true believer in Lord
Krishna. I believe that he
is the Supreme Personal-
ity of Godhead. He teach-
es us how to live in this
world with deep knowl-
edge and in harmony with
other people and because
of him I feel super confi-
dent in everything I do. I
believe that confidence is
the only armour that
can shield us from
this glamorous
world. Accord-
ing to me, a su-
permodel should
have a great per-
sonality with grati-
tude and a beautiful
attitude.
What inspired you to find
the Supermodel in you.
Share some insides of
your journey.
For me, Gaurav Gaur and
Akanksha Bhalla are my
greatest source of inspira-
tion, they both have in-
spired me a lot just like my
family
.Gauravsirgroomed
me in Rajasthan’s biggest
beauty pageant ELITE
MISS RAJASTHAN. He is
the person who gave me
my identity and made me
the best version of myself.
I belong to a very conserv-
ative family
, initially
, they
were against this field but
now they feel proud of me
and my work.
What was the biggest
rookie mistake you made
when just starting out?
My mistake was that be-
fore meeting Gaurav sir I
was like so unconfirmed
about myself I didn’t have
that much confidence to
get any kind of achieve-
ments but when I met
Gaurav sir he made me
sure about my career and
that’s why I was got select-
ed for Femina miss India
from Rajasthan state level.
But unfortunately, I was
not enough prepared for
that national-level beauty
pageant but now I’m pre-
paring a lot for myself to
get selected for the nation-
al-level pageant.

At the 12th World Trade Organisation ministerial con- ference India had made its stand clear on subsidies to farmers and fishermen and stood its ground. Farm subsidies, which are capped at 10 percent of the value of production, have been breached by India in view of the pandemic. They therefore re- main a prickly area between In- dia and the US. Twelve law-mak- ers have written a letter to Joe Biden against the “dangerous trade practices” by continuing to subsidise more than half the value of production. India’s “lack of rule-following” has put American producers at a disad- vantage, the lawmakers said and blamed the Biden administra- tion for “lack of enforcement”. They said that “India’s practices are dangerously trade distort- ing on a global scale”. For far too long the rich na- tions have kept developing na- tions at a “disproportionate dis- advantage” and now is the time for them to feel the pinch. TOP TWEETS A ollowing the stun- ning wins over the Samajwadi Party in the Lok Sabha by-elec- tions from Rampur and Azamgarh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to Pasmanda Muslims of Uttar Pradesh and asked par- ty workers to work for the “deprived and downtrodden” community. Pasmandas are Dalit Muslims. The Prime Minister said that focus should now shift to the poor in other communities in its path to move from “appease- ment to fulfillment”. It would seem that by appointing Dan- ish Azad Ansari as minister, Yogi Adityanath has already moved in that direction. Both Rampur and Azam- garh and Rampur had been the bastions of Azam Khan and Akhilesh Yadav until the BJPwrestedcontrolof thetwo seats.Itisestimatedthatsome Muslims may have voted for the BJP in the two constituen- cies as they also benefited from the free ration scheme. However, the equation which the PM wants the party to explore was tried earlier too. As weavers belong to the PasmandaAnsaricommunity , theBJPin2013formedaweav- ers’ cell in Azamgarh to reach outtothem.M.AzadAnsariof Saharanpur was appointed the cell’s state convener. The plan did not work and the BJP lost in Azamgarh in 2014. With this perceptible change in stance towards Muslims the BJP expects to win over a section of the mi- noritycommunitybutitisnot certain if the attitude of Mus- lims will change easily , given thecountry’sdivisivepolitics. WiththeUStakingoccasional potshots at New Delhi over religious freedom and harass- ment of Muslims in India the going will be tough. AFTER OBCs DALITS BJP EYES PASMANDAS Following the stunning wins over the SP in the LS by-elections from Rampur and Azamgarh, PM Modi has reached out to Pasmanda Muslims of UP and asked party workers to work for the “deprived and downtrodden” community F Collaborative goal setting employee engagement y association with senior in- dustry leaders and corporate directors over past decade and half has pointedly brought forward one particu- lar aspect of employee en- gagement. While most com- panies recognize that em- ployee engagement is good for their business, poor re- tention and motivation af- fects their productivity and finally reflects on their prof- itability. It’s logical that workers who have an emo- tional connect to their jobs, managers and environment will obviously put in their heart and soul to work and thus be more productive. In fact, there’s plenty of re- search showing that employ- ee engagement has a direct impact on company’s perfor- mance and profitability. But how employee engagement in an organization is defined will dictate the congeniality at work place. The truth is that the con- cept of employee engage- ment is somewhat incompre- hensive and carries different meaning to different people. And therefore, many organi- zations have indistinct and dispassionate goals for em- ployee engagement. So, what could be the Col- laborative Goals when it comes to employee engage- ment? In my personal opin- ion, unlike the conventional model where in a manager determines the direction of an employee’s work, collabo- rative goals are agreed through consultation, analy- sis, listening, prioritising and assessing targets and objectives together with em- ployees. It’s a translucent process that makes work force believe they’re being listened to and included in the company’s frame work. In addition to setting clear collaborative goals, I would emphasise that employees work well when they are faced with challenging goals as handling these difficult goals forces them to work un- tiringly and that helps them develop new skill sets and as a result, receive positive feed- back and an overall sense of achievement. Now the question arises if a strategic suggestion or de- sign be recommended for for- mation of goals. Yes, as a keen observer and corporate trainer I would suggest a four-prong rational for set- ting goals. That is a mix of clarity, brevity, commitment and feedback. Goals must be clear and specific for work- ers to understand the objec- tives and deadlines. As also, goals should be laid out in simple language for employ- ees to focus upon. And final- ly, goals should be broken down into smaller goals with timeline for each. Having decided on the col- laborative goals, concentrate on essential drivers for em- ployee engagement. While for some the priority may be to improve retention ratio, for others it could be reducing absenteeism and yet some may move on to the final stage of building a high-per- formance culture and feeling of ownership by employees. However, understand that managers and leaders need to be sensitive to employee en- gagement vision. So, may we say there needs to be a process that compa- nies ought to follow to achieve this? My answer would in affirmative. Having worked with industries both in services and manufactur- ing sectors, I opine that sen- ior leaders need to focus on three unavoidable principles which are, firstly, linking personal goals of employees to organizational ambitions to establish accountability. Secondly , Keep the communi- cation channels open. And finally , managers and leaders have to be on guard to iden- tify possible risks that could inhibit one from reaching desired destination? How these bottle necks are man- aged and negotiated will dis- play the vision of the leaders. Therefore, flexibility and agility hold the key to suc- cess and mid-course correc- tion. To achieve the objective, many business thought lead- ers, world over, have laid out a number of active and pas- sive techniques for corpo- rates to set and communicate goals. But I believe that the SMART model theory still remains the best and effec- tive way to achieving employ- ee engagement. Actually, SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measur- able, Aggressive, Realistic and Time-bound goal setting technique that caters for ac- countability of each employ- ee, aligning of personal goals with broad company policies and a fool proof system and a process bound by deadlines and targets. Remember, Goal setting in- deed is a complex issue and the errors in embedding them may cause some seri- ous disadvantages to raise ugly heads. Therefore, corpo- rates should guard against four main problems associ- ated with team goals which are lack of leadership, fuzzy focus, stuck in sameness and perfectionism. If teams can’t adapt and innovate, then team members tend to par- ticipate in group thinking leading to the same old thought repeatedly. If new ideas aren’t generated, the organization would lose the cutting edge in the market pie. Without a strong leader, the direction of the company will be in an anonymous di- rection and that in turn will lead to vague goals that will be hard for the employees to follow along. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL M Remember, Goal setting indeed is a complex issue and the errors in embedding them may cause some serious disadvantages to raise ugly heads. Therefore, corporates should guard against four main problems associated with team goals which are lack of leadership, fuzzy focus, stuck in sameness and perfectionism. If teams can’t adapt and innovate, then team members tend to participate in group thinking leading to the same old thought repeatedly. If new ideas aren’t generated, the organization would lose the cutting edge in the market pie It’s logical that workers who have an emotional connect to their jobs, managers and environment will obviously put in their heart and soul to work and thus be more productive. In fact, there’s plenty of research showing that employee engagement has a direct impact on company’s performance and profitability. But how employee engagement in an organization is defined will dictate the congeniality at work place COL ANUPAM JAITLY (RETD) The writer is Defence expert, Motivational Speaker Corporate Trainer

Besides rising air fares, another issue which Vijayan drew the PM’s attention to was the railways decision to abandon the Nemom Coaching Terminal project in Thiruvanan- thapuram. He sought PM Modi’s intervention for recon- sidering abandoning of the project and to in- stead ensure that it gets early approval. Both the issues were raised by Vijayan in separate letters ad- dressed to the Prime Minister on July 2. He said airline tick- ets both in the interna- tional and domestic sec- tors were “exorbitantly high” compared to pre- Covid rates and this situation is affecting NRIs. He said Kerala’s tourism sector is on the threshold of a turna- round and the high air fares “are a serious dampener to the revival of this sector”. O Panneersel- vam and E Palaniswa- mi, the two leaders who were heading the party after Jay- alalithaa’s death, have parted ways. The Palaniswami camp has taken over the party. In the last meeting of the General Council of the party, the post of Coor- dinator and Joint Coor- dinator was abolished and all the powers of Panneerselvam were taken away. The next meeting of the General Council is to be held on July 11, but till then all the power is in the hands of EPS i.e. Palaniswami. Interestingly, amidst this tussle between the two camps, on June 26, VK Sasikala started her journey around the state. She held a big program, which was supported by Anna DMK workers. Keep in mind that she had re- turned from Bangalore jail just before the last election and then it was reported quoting sourc- es that BJP had asked her to stay away from politics. It was the BJP that had brought about a reconciliation be- tween the OPS and EPS camps. Now both the camps are scattered and Sasikala has be- come active in politics, and it is believed that BJP is behind this de- velopment. Actually BJP is eyeing Anna DMK, but the saffron party has no face to control it. This work can be done through Sasikala. But the trou- ble is that her face is very infamous and yet, the BJP is playing some bets. So, after July 11, it will be known what game is happening in the state and to what extent BJP is involved in that game. 21-yr-old killed, body thrown in drain in Meerut; 3 arrested WILL BJP SUCCEED IN MAKING INROADS IN TAMIL NADU POLITICS? But at the same time, the party high command is also work- ing to strike a balance in the politics of the state. Randeep Singh Surjewala was first ‘balanced’ as after handing over the com- mand of the state to Hooda, Surjewala was made a member of the Rajya Sabha from Ra- jasthan but was also removed from the post of media in-charge. Now he is the general secretary of the party and is in-charge of Karnataka. As soon as he was removed from the post of media in- charge, his face has disappeared from the media and reportedly, Hooda camp is satis- fied with this develop- ment. After balancing Sur- jewala, the party made Kumari Selja a mem- ber of the Congress Working Committee. Keep in mind that she is the Dalit face of the party and was the state president of Congress for years. Her Rajya Sabha seat was taken by Hooda for his son in the last election. By making her a member of the working com- mittee, the party has struck a perfect bal- ance. Hooda is the lead- er of the legislature party and his close aide Udaybhan is the state president. The second big leader has been made the national general secretary by the party and the third leader has been nomi- nated in the working committee. This is also true in the fashion industry. City First had a conversation with the model, Megha Shyam Soni about her journey. Describe yourself, and what would you say are some vital skills or characteristics to have to make it in the modelling world? To introduce myself, my name is Megha Shyam and a very spiritual person and a true believer in Lord Krishna. I believe that he is the Supreme Personal- ity of Godhead. He teach- es us how to live in this world with deep knowl- edge and in harmony with other people and because of him I feel super confi- dent in everything I do. I believe that confidence is the only armour that can shield us from this glamorous world. My mistake was that be- fore meeting Gaurav sir I was like so unconfirmed about myself I didn’t have that much confidence to get any kind of achieve- ments but when I met Gaurav sir he made me sure about my career and that’s why I was got select- ed for Femina miss India from Rajasthan state level.
