Does your final product reflect your
original intentions?
My final product has had many changes throughout of its development many key
features have had to be changed in order to create a more effective and visually
appealing product. One of these such changes what the implementation of using
textures in order to add more depth into each scene, when using textures I have
made sure that I have continuity in order to convey a clear art style toward the
viewer/reader.
Another change that I have made upon my first intentions was the amount of
shadows that I was going to use on assets in the books, this was due to the fact
that I have originally intended to only use shadows on key items in the book such
as on characters and houses. But in the end I ended up using shadows and every
single asset if it was possible, this was due to the fact that I decided to take a
more professional art style than the one that I had originally intended
But some key aspects that were present in the original plan are still present in the
finished product, for example each frame / page still follows the same plot /
structure and each frame still has very similar assets to the plan albeit highly
developed compared with that of my original plans.
How well have you constructed your
images?
I have made sure that the final product was a correct representation of
my experience of using Photoshop, this has resulted in a large amount
of different skills being conveyed in each frame, resulting in a large
range of different techniques being used.
I included the use of drop shadow and inner shadow being used on
nearly every asset in order to create the illusion of the perspective,
this was due to the fact that I wanted the reader to be able to tell the
locations of different assets on the page, the use of drop and inner
shadow made this possible.
Another tool that I have used in my frames is opacity. This is due to the
fact that this has given me the ability to be able to create the illusion
of certain materials / objects. Thus in the scenes that I have created, I
have made it possible to make certain assets look like certain materials
such as glass.
I have also used opacity in order to make the shadows that are present
in each frame slightly see though, this is as they would other wise be a
block colour, Due to this they would not be a correct representation of
what a shadow looks like. Thus I have done this in order to make
shadows more realistic and believable.
Another aspect of my work that shows that I have constructed my
images well is that every layer has been named and colour coded, this
is due to the fact that this allows me to be able to manipulate all of my
assets easily, as well as this I am also able to distinguish assets easily as
well as move them in their allocated groups.
In conclusion I think that I have created my images to the best of my
ability as I have used as many tools as I could without my work without
looking ridiculously excessive as well as organising every layer in order
for my images to be as organised as possible.
An example of the
organisation of work that has
taken place in each page
An example of the large
amount of drop and inner
shadow that has taken place
when creating different assetsAn
example
of the
change
that took
place
between
the plan
and the
final art
directions.
How well have you used text to anchor
your images
• The use of text in my work adds a completely
different aspect to the story, this is due to the fcat
that I have used a different font for actions and
descriptive words, for example words such as wiz
have been put into italics and a thin font has been
used, this is to give off the effect that the word is
moving. I have done this because it gives another
visual representation of the action to the reader,
this defines the action to the reader ever more
clearly and explicitly than just the descriptive
word itself.
Is your product suitable for your
audience?
My work is of a standard that I would think of being suitable to any
culture / audience, this is due to the fact that I have made sure that I
have not used any items, gestures and symbols in my book that could
be seen as being insulting to cultures other than my own. This is as my
book does not contain any scenes that could be conveyed as being
violent. This is due to the fact that I have made sure that each scene
that contains the wolf contains many comical elements, this is due to
the fact that wolfs are usually portrayed as being a violent character in
books.
Despite that the wolf is still being portrayed as the antagonist in my
book, I have tried my hardest to make him a suitable character for
people of ages. I have done this by making sure that he does not do /
say anything that could be interpreted as being offensive. For example
in one scene to represent that the wolf Is angry I placed a anger vein
on his head in order to convey his emotions to the reader.
What do you like/dislike about the
techniques you have used?
I like the use of drop and inner shadows that I have used in
each frame, this is due to the fact that I find that this is
visually appealing, this is also due to the fact that this is one of
the first times that I have used these options to such a large
scale / degree in order to create my own theme. Another
technique that I have used that I like is the use of is the use of
opacity, this is as though using this I have created many
different shadow assets that would have not been possible by
using the drop shadow effect, another use that I have used
with this tool is that of creating windows, this is due to the
fact that the hue that is created though using a coloured
shape and placing a opacity of around 40% creates the illusion
of a window / glass.
One point that I dislike about a technique that I have used is
the use of the blur tool. This is due to the fact that the stars
that I have created in various scenes were made by using
various different colours with the brush tool followed by
creating small star like dots and then applying the blur tool on
top of them, this was in order to create the illusion of distance.
The reason why I dislike this technique this due to the fact that
I could have used various other methods of creating stars that
might have resulted in a more visually appealing asset.
What do you like/dislike about how
your final product looks?
One of the main points that I like about how my product
has turned out is how all of the other assets that I have
used have been compiled, this is as each element of
every frame compliment each other resulting in a theme
that is consistent though out the entire story.
Another point that I like about how the product looks as a
whole due the level of continuity that I have used. This is
clear by every asset that I have used in each side in in its
resected places despite what page your are on. One
example of such is that when the wolf is blowing down
each house small details have been taken into account
such as the position of debris E.C.T.
Some
examples
of the use
of opacity
that has
occurred
in every
page.
Some examples of pages that follow the same kind of theme ( visually )
Why did you include the content you
used?
• Images, fonts, effects, colours
• In my final product I aimed to use no 3rd party
assets from the internet such as images E.C.T.
in the content that I have created. As a result
of this all of the work that I have created has
had no / little influence in terms of the
particular style that I have created. Due to this
I have
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
Media texts require us to have a certain level of cultural understanding to
be able to interpret them.
At a basic level, this could mean being able to read the language that a
magazine is written in.
At a deeper level, it means being able to interpret signs and symbols that
we use a visual shorthand to communicate ideas.
We recognise these signs in our own culture but find it harder to
understand when looking at others.
We create and attach meaning to signs and symbols in many different
forms.
17Creative Media Production 2012
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
What is this?
This is a Norwegian Pine tree, covered in
snow and with a red ribbon on.
Our cultural understanding allows us to
interpret its meaning.
To us, in British society, it means
Christmas, presents and family.
This is because we share a cultural
knowledge.
18Creative Media Production 2012
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
There are many other signs and symbols
that we attach meaning to.
A leather jacket can imply rebellion.
A sports car can imply wealth and power.
A cross can represent religion.
19Creative Media Production 2012
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
Visual representations of everyday objects are often the same the world
over. A car appears as a car, no matter what country it appears in.
What that car means however, can be very different depending on your
cultural background.
20Creative Media Production 2012
What signs, symbols or codes have
your used in your work?
A few uses of representation through colour and symbols have been
used in order to convey meaning towards the audience. One example
of this is that the wolf is wearing an orange and white space suit. I
have done this due to the fact that this colour scheme is usually
associated with that of a prisoner / convict , and prisoners are usually
associated with evil due to their relation to crime.
Another use of meaning that has been conveyed through the use of
colour is with the moon, this is due to the fact that the moon is grey
and barren, despite this pigs do not feel safe being on their planet
which is clearly bright and beautiful compared with that of their
destined location. This can tell you that what ever has happened to
them has made them want to move as far away as possible.
What representations can be found in
your work?
In my book the genders of the pigs are not stated, this is
the same for the wolf. Due to this I have come to the
conclusion that they are genderless. Another reason that
suggests why all of the characters are genderless is due to
the fact that in the original story line their genders are
again not mentioned.
Also the age and religion of all four characters are not
motioned. As a result of this I have made it so that the
book is very neutral meaning that any-one, despite the
fact that they are male or female, or of any particular
religion should be able to read it.
What style have you employed in your
products?
• The art style that I had originally chosen to use was rather
different with that of the end product. One of the main
reasons why I did this was due to the fact that the theme of
which that I had decided to use was going to be in a
comical style with over sized limbs. But this would have
meant that I would be using a style that I have not
attempted before.
• As a result of this I had chosen to use an art style that I
have had more experience using. Due to this I chose to use
a more traditional art style that used a combination of
complex shadows and proportionate limbs for the
characters present in the book.
What were the strengths and weaknesses
of the pre-production and planning
• The research that I conducted helped with many different aspects
of the work that I accomplished. One example of such was the
different art styles of which I had taken, when recreating this
children's classic. The art style that caught my eye at first was that
of taking a more comic style with over proportioned limbs. But
unfortunately I was not able to recreate anything to a high
standard. So I decided to take a more conventional approach by
using an art style that I am already experienced with when creating
my final product. But by the point that I had realized that I was not
making the plan to the standard that I had hoped for it to reach
most of the plan was already completed, so I continued to finish the
plan with the art style that I had originally started with.
• Another weakness that I had experienced with the preproduction is
that it took me a while to decide on what kind of
Historical and cultural context
• How does your work compare to what has come before? What other
similar products have existed in the past? What current products exist?
My work is based on the same basic story line of the original book. Despite
this there are many factors from my interpretation of the story that differ
from that of the original. This is due to the fact that my version is based on a
less explicit rendition of the original book. The reason why I have not based
my variant on the original is due to the fact that it described many gruesome
scenes that would be unsuitable for the target audience that this book is
aimed at.
The art style that is present in my book is similar in some aspects to that of
the Gruffalo, this is evident due to the detailed designs that are evident in
both examples. One example of such is the shadows that are used in both
mine and the Gruffalos, as every item has had both a drop and inner shadow
applied to them.
Despite the fact that the Gruffalo has many key art styles that relate to mine, from the
past there are no books that I can find that my work can relate to in any major aspect.
This could be due to the fact that my entire book has been completed in Photoshop
and since digital editing is a recent technology no past books could have been created
in this style due to the fact that the technology was not available.

Digital graphics evaluation pro forma

  • 2. Use this template to help you evaluate your project. You should give specific details about your work. You should provide both written and visual examples to explain your project. You should find areas to praise in your work. Be specific about why you think they are good or why you are proud of them. You should also find areas that could be improved. Look for areas that you could make better if you went back to them. Be specific about what you would improve. Add additional slides as you need to. Don’t be restricted by what is here. Any blank slides should be deleted before submission.
  • 3. Does your final product reflect your original intentions? My final product has had many changes throughout of its development many key features have had to be changed in order to create a more effective and visually appealing product. One of these such changes what the implementation of using textures in order to add more depth into each scene, when using textures I have made sure that I have continuity in order to convey a clear art style toward the viewer/reader. Another change that I have made upon my first intentions was the amount of shadows that I was going to use on assets in the books, this was due to the fact that I have originally intended to only use shadows on key items in the book such as on characters and houses. But in the end I ended up using shadows and every single asset if it was possible, this was due to the fact that I decided to take a more professional art style than the one that I had originally intended But some key aspects that were present in the original plan are still present in the finished product, for example each frame / page still follows the same plot / structure and each frame still has very similar assets to the plan albeit highly developed compared with that of my original plans.
  • 4. How well have you constructed your images? I have made sure that the final product was a correct representation of my experience of using Photoshop, this has resulted in a large amount of different skills being conveyed in each frame, resulting in a large range of different techniques being used. I included the use of drop shadow and inner shadow being used on nearly every asset in order to create the illusion of the perspective, this was due to the fact that I wanted the reader to be able to tell the locations of different assets on the page, the use of drop and inner shadow made this possible. Another tool that I have used in my frames is opacity. This is due to the fact that this has given me the ability to be able to create the illusion of certain materials / objects. Thus in the scenes that I have created, I have made it possible to make certain assets look like certain materials such as glass.
  • 5. I have also used opacity in order to make the shadows that are present in each frame slightly see though, this is as they would other wise be a block colour, Due to this they would not be a correct representation of what a shadow looks like. Thus I have done this in order to make shadows more realistic and believable. Another aspect of my work that shows that I have constructed my images well is that every layer has been named and colour coded, this is due to the fact that this allows me to be able to manipulate all of my assets easily, as well as this I am also able to distinguish assets easily as well as move them in their allocated groups. In conclusion I think that I have created my images to the best of my ability as I have used as many tools as I could without my work without looking ridiculously excessive as well as organising every layer in order for my images to be as organised as possible.
  • 6. An example of the organisation of work that has taken place in each page An example of the large amount of drop and inner shadow that has taken place when creating different assetsAn example of the change that took place between the plan and the final art directions.
  • 7. How well have you used text to anchor your images • The use of text in my work adds a completely different aspect to the story, this is due to the fcat that I have used a different font for actions and descriptive words, for example words such as wiz have been put into italics and a thin font has been used, this is to give off the effect that the word is moving. I have done this because it gives another visual representation of the action to the reader, this defines the action to the reader ever more clearly and explicitly than just the descriptive word itself.

  • 9. Is your product suitable for your audience? My work is of a standard that I would think of being suitable to any culture / audience, this is due to the fact that I have made sure that I have not used any items, gestures and symbols in my book that could be seen as being insulting to cultures other than my own. This is as my book does not contain any scenes that could be conveyed as being violent. This is due to the fact that I have made sure that each scene that contains the wolf contains many comical elements, this is due to the fact that wolfs are usually portrayed as being a violent character in books. Despite that the wolf is still being portrayed as the antagonist in my book, I have tried my hardest to make him a suitable character for people of ages. I have done this by making sure that he does not do / say anything that could be interpreted as being offensive. For example in one scene to represent that the wolf Is angry I placed a anger vein on his head in order to convey his emotions to the reader.

  • 11. What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used? I like the use of drop and inner shadows that I have used in each frame, this is due to the fact that I find that this is visually appealing, this is also due to the fact that this is one of the first times that I have used these options to such a large scale / degree in order to create my own theme. Another technique that I have used that I like is the use of is the use of opacity, this is as though using this I have created many different shadow assets that would have not been possible by using the drop shadow effect, another use that I have used with this tool is that of creating windows, this is due to the fact that the hue that is created though using a coloured shape and placing a opacity of around 40% creates the illusion of a window / glass.
  • 12. One point that I dislike about a technique that I have used is the use of the blur tool. This is due to the fact that the stars that I have created in various scenes were made by using various different colours with the brush tool followed by creating small star like dots and then applying the blur tool on top of them, this was in order to create the illusion of distance. The reason why I dislike this technique this due to the fact that I could have used various other methods of creating stars that might have resulted in a more visually appealing asset.
  • 13. What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks? One of the main points that I like about how my product has turned out is how all of the other assets that I have used have been compiled, this is as each element of every frame compliment each other resulting in a theme that is consistent though out the entire story. Another point that I like about how the product looks as a whole due the level of continuity that I have used. This is clear by every asset that I have used in each side in in its resected places despite what page your are on. One example of such is that when the wolf is blowing down each house small details have been taken into account such as the position of debris E.C.T.
  • 14. Some examples of the use of opacity that has occurred in every page. Some examples of pages that follow the same kind of theme ( visually )
  • 15. Why did you include the content you used? • Images, fonts, effects, colours • In my final product I aimed to use no 3rd party assets from the internet such as images E.C.T. in the content that I have created. As a result of this all of the work that I have created has had no / little influence in terms of the particular style that I have created. Due to this I have

  • 17. Audience Responses Cultural competence: Media texts require us to have a certain level of cultural understanding to be able to interpret them. At a basic level, this could mean being able to read the language that a magazine is written in. At a deeper level, it means being able to interpret signs and symbols that we use a visual shorthand to communicate ideas. We recognise these signs in our own culture but find it harder to understand when looking at others. We create and attach meaning to signs and symbols in many different forms. 17Creative Media Production 2012
  • 18. Audience Responses Cultural competence: What is this? This is a Norwegian Pine tree, covered in snow and with a red ribbon on. Our cultural understanding allows us to interpret its meaning. To us, in British society, it means Christmas, presents and family. This is because we share a cultural knowledge. 18Creative Media Production 2012
  • 19. Audience Responses Cultural competence: There are many other signs and symbols that we attach meaning to. A leather jacket can imply rebellion. A sports car can imply wealth and power. A cross can represent religion. 19Creative Media Production 2012
  • 20. Audience Responses Cultural competence: Visual representations of everyday objects are often the same the world over. A car appears as a car, no matter what country it appears in. What that car means however, can be very different depending on your cultural background. 20Creative Media Production 2012
  • 21. What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work? A few uses of representation through colour and symbols have been used in order to convey meaning towards the audience. One example of this is that the wolf is wearing an orange and white space suit. I have done this due to the fact that this colour scheme is usually associated with that of a prisoner / convict , and prisoners are usually associated with evil due to their relation to crime. Another use of meaning that has been conveyed through the use of colour is with the moon, this is due to the fact that the moon is grey and barren, despite this pigs do not feel safe being on their planet which is clearly bright and beautiful compared with that of their destined location. This can tell you that what ever has happened to them has made them want to move as far away as possible.
  • 22. What representations can be found in your work? In my book the genders of the pigs are not stated, this is the same for the wolf. Due to this I have come to the conclusion that they are genderless. Another reason that suggests why all of the characters are genderless is due to the fact that in the original story line their genders are again not mentioned. Also the age and religion of all four characters are not motioned. As a result of this I have made it so that the book is very neutral meaning that any-one, despite the fact that they are male or female, or of any particular religion should be able to read it.

  • 24. What style have you employed in your products? • The art style that I had originally chosen to use was rather different with that of the end product. One of the main reasons why I did this was due to the fact that the theme of which that I had decided to use was going to be in a comical style with over sized limbs. But this would have meant that I would be using a style that I have not attempted before. • As a result of this I had chosen to use an art style that I have had more experience using. Due to this I chose to use a more traditional art style that used a combination of complex shadows and proportionate limbs for the characters present in the book.
  • 25.
  • 26. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning • The research that I conducted helped with many different aspects of the work that I accomplished. One example of such was the different art styles of which I had taken, when recreating this children's classic. The art style that caught my eye at first was that of taking a more comic style with over proportioned limbs. But unfortunately I was not able to recreate anything to a high standard. So I decided to take a more conventional approach by using an art style that I am already experienced with when creating my final product. But by the point that I had realized that I was not making the plan to the standard that I had hoped for it to reach most of the plan was already completed, so I continued to finish the plan with the art style that I had originally started with. • Another weakness that I had experienced with the preproduction is that it took me a while to decide on what kind of
  • 27. Historical and cultural context • How does your work compare to what has come before? What other similar products have existed in the past? What current products exist? My work is based on the same basic story line of the original book. Despite this there are many factors from my interpretation of the story that differ from that of the original. This is due to the fact that my version is based on a less explicit rendition of the original book. The reason why I have not based my variant on the original is due to the fact that it described many gruesome scenes that would be unsuitable for the target audience that this book is aimed at. The art style that is present in my book is similar in some aspects to that of the Gruffalo, this is evident due to the detailed designs that are evident in both examples. One example of such is the shadows that are used in both mine and the Gruffalos, as every item has had both a drop and inner shadow applied to them.
  • 28. Despite the fact that the Gruffalo has many key art styles that relate to mine, from the past there are no books that I can find that my work can relate to in any major aspect. This could be due to the fact that my entire book has been completed in Photoshop and since digital editing is a recent technology no past books could have been created in this style due to the fact that the technology was not available.
