4. SEBI Investigates Investments Between Nippon Mutual
Fund and YES Bank
- SEBI launches an investigation suspecting the alleged misuse of
investor funds by Nippon and YES Bank between 2016 and 2019.
- The investigation probes whether investments by Nippon MF
(previously owned by parent company Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group)
in YES Bank’s perpetual bonds were made as part of deal whereby
lenders in return invested in securities of Anil Ambani group
companies.
- As per SEBI regulations the parent company of a mutual fund is not
authorized to access investor funds either directly or indirectly.
- If the probe leads to charges being levied against the fund, the
penalties could range from restrictions on accessing capital
markets to monetary penalties.

5. Surge in SIP Collection in 2022
- Despite market volatility, SIP collection surged by 31% in 2022
growing to Rs.1.5 lakh crores.
- In comparison, SIP collection in 2021 saw an inflow of Rs. 1.14 lakh
crores and Rs. 97,000 crores in 2020 as per AMFI Data.
- The surge in SIP in 2022 is largely attributed to higher retail
participation and is expected to continue remaining strong in 2023.

7. Uninformed Portrayal of Mutual Funds in Tamil Movie “Thunivu” Sparks
Concern
 The movie's plot has come under fire for inaccurately portraying
Mutual Fund schemes as Ponzi Schemes designed to lure investors.
 The plot involves the protagonist exposing a Rs.25,00 crore scam
carried out by a crooked banker who misleads investors by luring
them to invest in a mutual fund that takes exposure in 10
companies owned by the banker/sponsor.
 As per SEBI norms, the mutual fund cannot invest more than 25% of
its net assets in listed equity shares of companies owned by the
sponsor. This ensures that the sponsor does not utilize investor
funds to strengthen their own group companies.

8. - Alpha Alternatives Fund Advisors LLP becomes the latest entity to apply for a
mutual fund license with SEBI. As of December 2022 six other companies besides
Alpha Alternatives namely Unifi Capital, Angel One, Alchemy Capital
Management, Emkay Global Financial Services, Abira Securities and
Wizemarkets Analytics are under consideration for an MF license.
- According to a recent Reuters Poll, most economists believe the FED will end its
tightening cycle after a 25 basis point hike at each of its next two policy meetings,
and will hold interest rates steady for atleast the rest of the year.
