3. MILK FEVER
Synonyms;
Parturient paresis, hypocalcaemia
Sindhi; sootak, Sootaki bukhar
Milk fever is metabolic disorders of dairy cows.
Usually seen at post calving.
Occurs within in 24 hours post calving
(may be 2-3 days post calving).
Due to low calcium in blood.
4. Calcium:
• Mineral
• 99% body's skeleton is made up calcium
• Helping muscle to contract
• Nerve function
• Regulates normal heart rhythms
5. Etiology:
• Milk fever is caused by deficiency of calcium in
blood.
Normal level of calcium in cow:
8.2-10.2 mg/dl
When deficiency occurs:
4.2-6.8 mg/dl
7. Treatment:
• Treatment should be given as soon as possible
• Drip; Calcium borogluconate
(With magn es iu m, p h os p h oru s , d ex tros e)
300-400 ml IV Route
• Animal get up within 10-20 minutes
• defecation and urine pass
• Start regurgitation
• Cow that are flat out should be supported in normal sitting position to
relieve pain (Recumbency position)
• Recovered cow should not be milked completely within 24 Hours.

10. Prevention:
• Feed management of pregnant female is must
during last trimester of gestation period.
Use Supplements mostly of calcium and other
essential trace minerals, Concentrates.
