Part 1: Market Research
Parent Brand
Lane Bryant is part the Ascena Retail Group Incorporated. The Ascena Retail Group was formed in
January 2011 and includes the brands Maurices, Catherines, Dressbarn, Justice, and Lane Bryant. Part of
the Charming Group, Lane Bryant joined Ascena in 2012 and has made a strong presence. Its -
headquarters are located at 933 MacArthur Boulevard in Mahwah, NJ 07430. They can be reached at
551-777-6700 or emailed at investor.relations@ascenaretail.com, Consumers can also find additional
information by going to http://www.ascenaretail.com/lanebryant.jsp. (Ascena, 2015)
The name Ascena represents ascending to new heights and Lane Bryant has great potential to take the
Ascena Retail Group there in the future with their successful business model. Despite the slow economy
of 2008 and 2009, Lane Bryant saw steady sales just over the one billion dollar mark but saw a slight
decline in 2010 to $945 million. In 2011 revenue began to pick up again and reached nearly $978 million
and has grown steadily since. In 2012 the merger of Charming Shops, which included Lane Bryant and
Catherines, helped Ascena see a 27% growth in sales and a 30% increase in their online sales. Last year
Lane Bryant continued to grow and saw a 3% rise in performance despite the closure of many stores.
The Ascena Retail Group as a whole reported net sales of $4,790.6. (Ascena annual report, 2015)
Although Ascena offers five distinct brands they have one common mission, to make people feel good
about themselves. Their statement is that “through an engaging store experience, convenient locations,
and of course offering fashion at a great value, we dress her from tween years into adulthood, and help
her look and feel her very best every step of the way.” They realize that women want to feel and look
great and clothing can definitely give her the confidence to do so. This statement also encompasses all
of their brands well since they offer apparel choices for tweens to mature ladies in items from
sportswear to designer inspired dresses. (Ascena, May 26, 2015).
Code of Conduct
Ascena Retail Group strives to live by a code of engagement. It states that “With Integrity: Honest,
fairness, and transparency guide our every action. With Excellence: We continuously elevate, improve
and have the highest expectations for ourselves and our fellow associates. With Respect: We respect
everyone, value differences and look for opportunities to collaborate. With Passion: We serve as a
catalyst for positive impact and change. With community: We demonstrate and live the principles of
care and giving back.” (LinkedIn, May 26, 2015).
Lane Bryant Then and Now
Lane Bryant got its start in New York by founder Lena Bryant. In 1900 she started the line as the first
apparel retailer dedicated to the plus size woman. Four years later she opened the first store on Fifth
Avenue which was the beginning of a national chain of stores throughout the years. In the 90s Lane
Bryant began a transformation into offering a more fashionable selection of plus sized clothing and
hasn’t looked back. Today they are still on the top of the charts when it comes to plus size apparel.
Today they are known as the most famous plus size retailer and you can’t look at any blog, magazine, or
news article related to plus apparel without seeing their name mentioned.
Lane Bryant currently offers a stylish selection of plus sized apparel from sizes 14 to 28. They also have a
selection of accessories and shoes in wider widths from sizes 7 to 12. One of their best sellers is their
Cacique line of intimate apparel. Everything is on trend and tailored to the plus size woman so that she
does not feel left out of current styles offered by regular sized brands. Their styles range from casual
sporty offerings to career wear to designer gowns that can be worn for a night out on the town.
Lane Bryant currently has 805 stores nationwide in 46 states. These include outlet stores which offer
past season’s and overstocked merchandise as well as some current items at a discount compared to
the regular stores. The majority of stores are located on the eastern half of the United States from
Minneapolis down to Texas and spread over to the east coast. There are also several in California and a
few each in Washington, Oregon, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. As of this figure
they have opened a few more stores and have been successful in moving out of malls and into strip mall
settings. So far they have not expanded overseas, but they do offer international shipping on their
website to continents such as Africa, Australia, and South America. (Lane Bryant, 2015).
Map of Lane Bryant Locations:
(Yahoo Images, June 19, 2015).
Lane Bryant has remained competitive and on top of the plus size industry since the beginning and
today their sales compared to their competition reflect that. A few of their competitors are Ashley
Stewart and Avenue which both filed for bankruptcy in recent years and are still struggling with sales.
Although Lane Bryant saw an 11.8 percent drop in net income to $133.4 million they gained 1.6 percent
in revenue to $4.79 billion which still put them ahead of their plus size competitors. (Business Source
Complete, 2015).
Target Market
The main categories of merchandise offered at Lane Bryant are career wear, casual wear, dresses, and
their popular Cacique line of intimate apparel. Women can find blouses, trendy pants, and even suits
that flatter the figure and make them look professional for work. Their average work pant is around $60
and for around $80 you can find a matching jacket. They also offer jeans, tees, and sports apparel that
range from $20 to around $70. In the past few years they have collaborated with designers such as
Isabel Toledo, Lela Rose, and Sophie Theallet to create beautiful gowns and other apparel that range
from $70 to $160. Their Cacique brand which is known for its quality in plus size bras ranges in price
from around $10 to $50. As for the quality of Lane Bryant’s apparel, a lot of plus size blogs give positive
reviews. Most think the prices are a little steep but are willing to pay for the stylish looks and quality. On
their website you can also find numerous four and five star reviews on most of their items. (Lane Bryant,

The target market of Lane Bryant is plus sized women ages 35-55. Their target also includes women who
are established in their career who are willing to spend a little more on their apparel because they know
it will fit right and want quality items. In the past they have tried to target younger women with more
youthful designed clothing but it did not work out because their true target market was turned off.
(Personal Conversation, May, 2015).
Lane Bryant’s Apparel
The designs Lane Bryant offers its customers range from basic to designer items. Lane Bryant has several
styles of basic tees and bottoms which are designed with more length than average garments so that
they fit the plus size figure better. They have also designed their own runway inspired line called 6th
&
Lane which is “dedicated to the fearlessly modern woman.” As they state “The world is our runway and
we own it.” (Plus Model Magazine, May 26, 2015). While most of their designs are done in-house, as
mentioned previously, they have been ramping up their designs with their collaborations to create a
more haute couture feel for customers. Their designs are based off of what is on trend at the moment
and they do a good job of keeping up to date with them.
Apparel Sources
Lane Bryant’s apparel is sourced from many different manufacturers. One place they get their denim
jeans from is Sunrise Brands. (Hoovers, May 26, 2015). Sunrise Brands offers a full service experience
from merchandising, sourcing, manufacturing, to marketing support. Their headquarters are in Los
Angeles, CA while their sourcing office is located in Hong Kong. (Sunrise Brands, nd) The majority of their
items are made in China. (Hoovers, May 26, 2015). Another manufacturer of clothing for Lane Bryant is
Assoluto, Inc. They have factories in the USA, Mexico, Turkey, Peru, and Bangladesh. Assoluto also offers
design, sourcing, and all aspects of pre and final production. Their California facility performs cutting,
first and final pattering, fit approvals, fabric testing, and has a design and product management team.
(LexisNexis, May 26, 2015).
Last year Ascena Retail Group opened a new services office and national distribution center in Pataskala,
OH. The offices handle sourcing and centralized procurement services to all of Ascena’s retail brands
and the distribution center also serves all brands. (Zacks, May 26, 2014). The new facility is a hub for
distribution since most Lane Bryant stores are located on the eastern half of the country. Most
shipments can be made within two days to 70% of their stores. (Reuters, May 26, 2012).
Marketing Tactics
Lane Bryant’s current marketing plan is one of the most recognized for a plus size retailer. Last month
they launched their “I’m No Angel” campaign and it has been a big hit. They took to social media to air
mini segments of plus sized models baring their bodies in an effort to come back at Victoria’s Secret’s
angels being seen as having the perfect bodies. Each week they unveil a new model and show her
personal segment about why she is not an angel. They also have a contest going on where customers
and fans can post a selfie that fits with the theme to win a trip to NYC and a $2,000 gift card. They are
also great at communicating to their customers by showing outfits each day and keeping up with posts
on their social media sites. They post current sales and emails can be sent to customers who sign up to
receive them. In the stores Lane Bryant associates are usually great at being attentive to customers and
figuring out what they need. (Facebook, May 27, 2015),(Huffington Post, June 18, 2015).
Competitors
A few of Lane Bryant’s competitors are Avenue and JC Penney. (Hoovers, May 27, 2015). Avenue stores
offer apparel on par with Lane Bryant and their stores are set up similarly. Like Lane Bryant one side is
dedicated to career wear while the other has casual pieces. Shoppers can also find wide width shoes,
accessories, and intimate apparel in plus sizes near the back of the stores. On one of the most popular
plus size fashion blogger’s site, the Curvy Fashionista, you can find her updates on many plus size
retailers including Avenue, Lane Bryant, and more of their competitors. (Curvy Fashionista, May 27,
2015). JCPenney, while not solely a retailer of plus sizes, offers a plus size section that also competes
with Lane Bryant. Their Worthington line of career wear has comparable styles and quality to that of
Lane Bryant’s.
Formerly under the name United Retail Group, Avenue stores were bought out by the private equity
firm Versa Capital Management in 2013 after declaring bankruptcy. Versa is based in Philadelphia and
specializes in restructuring firms. Most recently they acquired The Wet Seal Retail Operations which
declared bankruptcy earlier this year. Other brands affiliated with Versa Capital Management are bell
Howell, Bob’s Stores, and Standard Parking. Since they are a private group, very little financial
information was available for public viewing. (Versa Capital Management, 2015)
(Avenue, June 20, 2015).
Avenue
Avenue is a plus size only retailer that offers fashionable merchandise in the mid-price point range. Like
some Lane Bryant stores they are found in strip malls and can also be shopped online. Avenue has
around 300 stores in 35 states and have opened at least four more recently. They have not opened any
stores overseas as of today but do offer shipping from their online store to Australia, the United
Kingdom, and Canada.(Hoovers, May 27, 2015). Avenue stores carry an assortment of stylish work
staples, casual tops and bottoms, wide width shoes, accessories, and like Lane Bryant they have their
own line of intimates known as Avenue Body. Unlike Lane Bryant they do offer sizes up to 32 and also
offer petites.
(JCPenney, June 20, 2015).
JCPenney
On the other side of the spectrum Lane Bryant’s department store competitor JCPenney is a publicly
held corporation. JCP is headquartered in Texas and currently operates department stores, an online
site, catalogs, and is a partner with Sephora. As of today they have 1,062 stores in 49 states and in
Puerto Rico. They are mostly found in mall settings but can also be standalone stores. (S&P Capital IQ,
May 27, 2015). JCPenney is also an American based company with no stores overseas but they will ship
merchandise to over 80 countries. (JCPenney, May 29, 2015).
The target market for JCP is women ages 25 to 55. I believe that it has been hard for them to identify
with their target market in recent years but that they are aiming to attract middle income women who
search for deals on quality merchandise. They strive to offer their customers an upscale department
store feel but with price points in the moderate range. Their main selection of merchandise ranges from
home décor and bedding to apparel for the whole family. They have a selection of brand names but the
majority of their items are sold under their own private labels. When I need a specific item such as a nice
button down blouse or work pants and have no luck at Lane Bryant, I usually head to JCPenney where I
can often find what I need for an even better price. Their plus size department is a good rival to Lane
Bryant.
JCPenney has had its share of sales slumps in the past five years. After trying to rebrand and changing
their sales concept they saw a decline from $17.6 billion in 2011 to $11.8 billion in 2014. Last year’s sales
did see a rise to $12.3 billion. (Marketwatch, May 28, 2015). So far this year JCP has reported first
quarter sales of $2.86 billion which was a 3.4% increase from last year’s sales which may mean that
customers are now starting to return after being alienated during the changes. (JCPenney, May 28,
2015).
Swot Analysis: Lane Bryant
Strengths Weaknesses
Strong brand name
Creative marketing
Years in business
High prices compared to competitors
Negative perceptions
Declining sales
Opportunities Threats
Expanded shoes and accessories selections
More fresh ideas
Fast fashion retailers
New plus size retail options
Strengths
Lane Bryant has its biggest strength in its name. It has been one of the largest and well known specialty
retailers of plus sizes since its beginning. Their name is strong enough that nearly every piece of
merchandise in the store is labeled with it and they don’t have to depend on brand names to draw
shoppers in. Compared to Lane Bryant, Avenue’s brand is almost unrecognizable to those who aren’t
seeking out plus size options. JCPenney does have a strong name but not particularly for plus size
apparel. Another strength is the marketing done by Lane Bryant compared to its competitors. Although
they do have such a strong brand name, Lane Bryant is also pretty aggressive at their attempts to reach
its customers. They have stirred up controversy with their commercials featuring plus size models in
lingerie, attractive catalogs, and direct mail campaigns, regular emails featuring sales and new
merchandise, and an active social media presence.
Weaknesses
A weakness of Lane Bryant is that their price points are often seen as too high for a lot of shoppers. In
today’s economy most consumers want the most bang for their buck and are constantly seeking out
deals and sales. With a pair of jeans retailing for around $60, Lane Bryant may drive away some women
who would like to make their money stretch further than just buying one or two pieces. Although
Avenue’s prices have risen over the years, they are still overall cheaper than Lane Bryant and offer more
sales promotions. Most apparel is also cheaper at JCPenney and their quality is nearly just as good as
Lane Bryant’s. These two competitors, along with a score of others have created another weakness for
the retailer. With better prices and discounts being offered at other plus size stores Lane Bryant has
seen a drop in revenue over the years.
Another weakness that Lane Bryant has is that since they have been around for so long their name may
be associated with negative stereotypes of plus size women. Negative attitudes about plus size apparel
could potentially deter customers who are afraid to give them a try. They also have a reputation of being
boring or old lady like in style but they are striving to improve their image all the time. Joining the
Ascena Retail Group could have been the boost they need to gain a fresh prospective on their customer
base and for their customers to also get the chance to see them in a new way.
Opportunities
One way that Lane Bryant could get a better leg up on competitors is to offer a bigger selection of shoes
and accessories in store. They already sell shoes in wide widths which draws some customers in but
their assortment is pretty limited. Their competitor Avenue features a full sized shoe section with plenty
of stylish shoes compared to the one or two racks offered by Lane Bryant.
Another opportunity for Lane Bryant to stay ahead of competitors is to keep doing what they do best
but perhaps also add more excitement to their brand. Their current I’m No Angel campaign has been
very successful and their line of Cacique intimates is one of the best-selling lines in plus size apparel
which proves that their target customer wants to feel just as stylish and also as sexy as regular sized
women. Plus size apparel sales have been on the rise in recent years and last year in the 12 months
ending in April, sales rose 4.7% to $17.5 billion outpacing the growth of women’s apparel overall which
only rose 1%. (Karr, A., 2014) Moving forward, in order to capture the potential billions of dollars that is
out there, Lane Bryant will have to keep holding the attention of their loyal shoppers plus attract new
ones with more fresh, trendy, and sexier ideas.
Threats
A threat that Lane Bryant faces is competition from newer retailers that cater to plus size women and
offer stylish apparel at more affordable prices. Lane Bryant might be the first name most think of when
they need something but aside from their designer pieces, customers can find similar items at Fashion to
Figure, Ashley Stewart, or even Torrid. All three of them have stores as well as online sites and Fashion
to Figure and Ashley Stewart both have lower price points. Torrid has definitely grown over the years
and has become quite popular with more stores opening up in profitable areas. These three retailers
have the potential to take away Lane Bryant shoppers who seek a younger and trendier look sometimes.
They also bring to mind a second threat of fast fashion. With technology changing the pace of everything
today consumers always want the latest trend. Lane Bryant will also have to keep up with retailers that
offer their shoppers a constant fresh assortment of merchandise such as Forever 21 which also a plus
size section.
Comparing Competitor’s Offerings
Looking at Lane Bryant’s and its competitors, JCPenney and Avenue’s websites they do have several
things in common. One big trend that I found was that all three prominently feature apparel in the
colors black, white, blue, and a coral shade for their newest merchandise. Most pieces are flowy and an
asymmetrical hemline is popular with both Lane Bryant’s and Avenue’s collections. JCPenney has more
offerings with regular hemlines, and also features more assorted colors in their apparel which tends to
be more basic. . (Lane Bryant, May 28, 2015). For transitioning into the fall, Lane Bryant and JCPenney
both feature a wide leg pant in solids and prints, while Avenue’s options are more traditional. All three
sites will still offer several options of midi and maxi dresses. (Avenue, June 19, 2015), (JCPenney, June
19, 2015), (Lane Bryant, June 19, 2015).
JCPenney’s website offers lots of information to any consumer who wishes to know more about the
brand. From details on financial figures to their latest press release about how first quarter sales have
risen, they keep their customers up to date. On the other hand Avenue’s website leaves a lot to be
desired on information. While they do feature a great selection of clothing and accessories their
company information is pretty nonexistent and very difficult to find even on other sites. Although
information is also hard to find on Lane Bryant’s page consumers can dig deeper on their parent
company Ascena Retail Group’s site. Their latest press release touts there acquisition of Ann Inc.
(Ascena, May 29, 2015).
Some choices Lane Bryant could consider for the upcoming fall season are more color options such as
their competitors are offering. Looking at their new merchandise it is mostly black and white and
offering apparel in more colors will give their customers more choices and potentially lead to more
purchases. Also offering more silhouettes will give their customers more choices to find looks best on
their fuller figure. One example shown below is a printed dress with several colors that breaks up the
black and white in it. It also comes with a cardigan which customers can wear into the fall. Denim is also
a category that they could excite their customers more with. They already offer wide leg options in
prints but a denim one would also keep them on trend for the season. The third example shown
expands on the black and white theme of their new merchandise but does it in a sleeker silhouette than
the dresses currently offered.

Line Development
Target Customer Sandra:
Sandra represents the everyday Lane Bryant shopper. She is 45 years
old, lives in the suburbs of Chicago, and is an administrative assistant
for a local marketing company. She is married, has three children, and
owns her home. After several years of experience, Sandra makes around
$55,000 a year. Her husband also works and on the weekends and they
are active with family, friends, and the community. They enjoy going to
concerts and other events downtown, having friends over for dinner,
and just spending time with the family whenever they can. Overall
Sandra is a busy, working, and active mom that also likes to keep up
with the latest trends but also look professional.
Sandra shops at her local Lane Bryant located in a strip mall near her home and
also online when her busy schedule doesn’t permit her to shop during normal
hours or when she just wants to relax in the comfort of her home. She visits the
store at least once each season to find out what is new and what pieces she can
add to her wardrobe. She also visits the online site during the holidays for gifts for
family members and when special sales are happening. Sometimes she stops in the
store out of necessity when she needs to replace a worn out pair of work pants or
blouse because it is so convenient to her home. During her average visit to Lane
Bryant she usually spends around $150. She is right on par with what the average
woman her age spends on clothing each year. According to a chart by Goldman
Sachs, women Sandra’s age spend the most on clothing out of women ranging
from 20 to 75 years of age. (Business Insider, 2013) In 2012 women in her
income range spent an average of $556 on apparel annually, but because plus size
women normally spend more for clothing than average size women I believe it
might be slightly higher for them. (The, N.S.E.. 2014)
When Sandra shops her local Lane Bryant store or online she takes ideas with her
that she’s seen on her social media feeds. One popular plus size page that she
follows is Daily Venus Diva which shows her stylish pieces from various plus size
retailers several times a day and includes links to where she can purchase them. It
also keeps her updated on the latest news from the plus size model industry and
blogs so that she can see what other women are wearing and be inspired. Another
site Sandra may look for fashion advice is The Curvy Fashionista. Because she is a
fan of Lane Bryant she can also view posts with their latest merchandise. She also
follows competitors such as Ashley Stewart, Avenue, JCPenney, and Macy’s where
she can see and compare looks that interest her.
Image from Flikr
For fall 2015 Sandra is seeking looks that she’s seen on the runway,
on social media, and on her favorite celebrities which she can adapt
to fit her own lifestyle. Since she works in an office she wants to
look professional but stand out with unique and fashionable pieces.
After checking out the DailyVenusDiva site and seeing that the
Gap’s spinoff line of Plus sizes called Eloquii has launched a new
look book, Sandra decides she wants to look for dresses with bold
prints and midi skirts that she can wear from work and perhaps
after work hours to events. (Dailyvenusdiva, 2015) For work she
thinks that high waist pants with wider legs would suit her because
they will even out her fuller figure and still look on trend. She likes
the idea of pairing them with longer cut blazers for a lean feminine
silhouette. She also will be seeking basics that she can pair with the
trendy pieces.
Dress by City Chic.com
Suit, Skirt, Jackets by Eloquii.com
Trend Fall 2015
Fall 2015 will continue the trend of bold prints, lace details, and wider leg pants.
Clothes will have a tailored look inspired by menswear but with feminine details that
will complement the figure. Lengths for tops, jackets, and coats will be longer rather
than the cropped trends of past seasons. A few must have items for the fall will be
sharp tailored looking pants, long length jackets, pleated midi skirts, tailored jumpsuits,
structured handbags, and menswear inspired shoes. (WGSN, 2015) (Donegar,2015)
(Fashionising, 2015)
As the season changes so will some of the fabrics being used. Fall’s featured fabrics will
include tweed, leather, cotton, polyester blends, and suede. These fabrics will have bold
prints inspired by ethnic prints, geometric designs, and nature. Houndstooth and plaid
patterns will also be prominent this season. The colors offered will be earthy and
mineral inspired. Classic tones in nudes, black, gray, and even metallic will dominate
women’s apparel. Also deep hues of reds, blues, and greens will add a pop of color to
outfits. (WGSN, 2015) (Fashionising, 2015)
Photos from Fashionising, 2015, WGSN, 2015, and Donegar, 2015
In WGSN one trend that attracted me and inspired my line was Essence. It was
inspired by small details that make a statement such as pleats, perforations, and
unique closures. Materials such as leather, lace, and textured woven fabrics were
used. The lookbook featured patterned suits influenced by menswear, extra-long
coats, knit sweaters, and overall timeless classic pieces. (WGSN, 2015) Maker, a
2016 Fall/Winter theme in Doneger also helped support the mood of my line.
They described it as “quiet refinement” which I think says it perfectly. In both
trends the color palette was very similar and were perfect fall shades for everyone.
(Donegar, 2015)
Sketches from WGSN, 2015. Photo from Donegar, 2015.
The theme for my Fall 2015 line for Lane Bryant is career wear
inspired by the runway trends but toned down for the office called
B*B which stands for Be Beautiful . Based on the theme of Essence
in WGSN which had earthy tones with clean lines and lots of details
such as quilting, perforations, grommets, and pleats. I also was
inspired by the women’s pieces featured on Doneger and
Fashionising so I included long tailored pants, blazers, and longer
cut blouses. The silhouette for B*B’s tops are slightly fitted and
longer cut for the coverage that plus size women desire. Pants are
also long with wider legs with a tailored look and feel.
B*B’s fall line features fabrics suited for the season and for the
career minded woman. Fabrics such as tweed, poplin, oxford cotton,
textured knits, and pleather used for a fun zipper detailed blazer will
be seen. Prints found will include a houndstooth pattern that is
always a classic look. Plaids and stripe prints will also found on
some of the key pieces in the line. The color palette used will range
from toned down earthy shades which will complement lots of
pieces our customers already own to reds, greens, and blues which
will add a pop of color to the working woman’s day at the office.

Merchandising Plan
Quick Costing
• By performing Quick Costing of B*B’s Fall line we can estimate the costs of producing each
garment and decide if they can be produced within the set budget. Using the unit cost of
each item and factoring in that we aim to spend 60% of that on the fabric, we can get the
target cost of the materials. (Unit cost*.60=Target cost) Compare this with the Fabric quick
cost (Yardage*Wholesale cost) to determine if the item will be profitable or not.
• Since B*B is designed for the plus size figure one yard of fabric was added to each
recommended yardage to accommodate the needed length and width of each item.
After calculating quick costs for each item in B*B’s Fall 2015 merchandising line, all items can
be offered.

6 Month Merchandise Plan
Formulas
• With planned sales of $270,000 for the sixth months of August to January B*B has calculated its fall/winter merchandise plan.
• For November:
Planned Sales = Total Season Sales x Nov. LY % of Sales
$48,600 = $270,000 x .17
BOM plan = Nov. Plan sales x Nov. Stock-to-sales ratio
$97,200 = $48,600 x 2.0
Markdown = Nov. Plan sales x MD %
$972 = $48,600 x 2%
Retail Purchases = Plan sales + EOM Stock + MD – BOM Stock
$87,372 = $48,600 + $135,000 + $972 - $97,200
Markup Plan = Retail purchases x (100% - MU%)
$34,949 = $87, 372 x (100% - 60%)
EOM = BOM for the next month
6 Month Merchandise Plan
Formulas (Cont.)
• Stock to Sales Ratio = Retail Stock BOM/Monthly Planned Sales
2.0 = 97,200/$48,600
• Retail planned purchases for the month of November will be $87,372.

Size Distribution
This fall B*B’s merchandise distribution will consist of 45% Tops
that can be paired with any of our assorted bottoms. Skirts and
pants will make up 35% which will reflect the upcoming trend of
tailored wide leg pants and mid length skirts. The rest of the line
will offer two choices of dresses and blazers which will round out
the last 20%. (Doneger, 2015.)
Sizes will be distributed based on what has sold best in Lane Bryant
stores. According to sales associates in Chapel Hill Mall of Akron,
OH, the best selling size overall is the 18/20. Since their main
shoppers come in seeking plus sizes the least popular is the 14/16
which they can find in many other department stores. The sales
associates also noted that they markdown quite a bit of apparel in
the 24/26 range. (Personal Conversation, June 4, 2015.) Their
observations coincide with the fact that the average American
woman is now 166lbs and has a waist size measuring 37.5 inches so,
including the instance that most stores carry sizes 14 and 16, their
size distribution is a fair reflection. (CDC, 2012.)

Based on this season’s earth tones and neutral
shades, the line will be dominated by pieces in
Smoke Signal, New Nude, and Barely Brown.
Pants and matching jackets will be on trend but
in shades that will make classic investment
pieces for our customers.
Our tops will add a pop of color to the rest of
the line by being prominent in Ravishing, Go
Deep and Beauty but also available in the
neutral shades. (WGSN, 2013.)

Eight women were given $150 gift certificates to
Lane Bryant and asked what items from the B*B fall
line they would purchase. The most popular piece
chosen was the Bold Blazer. The Zip Skirt was not
purchased at all which may mean that it is not a
viable option for work.
The colors Smoke Signal and Ravishing were an
overall success which went against B*B’s purchase
order of more items in the neutral earth tones than
the brighter colors. Go Deep also was a color that
was bought by the customers. even more than all of
the neutrals. These findings show that plus size
women of all ages would prefer more color choices
than just plain neutral shades.
The Popular Pant and Lovely Lengths Pant outsold
the trendier Hello Pant which features a wide leg and
high waist so this may show that these women would
rather wear a more traditional cut leg for work. Sizes ordered were a
good reflection of the merchandise plan with only one customer
needing a size 14/16 and the rest of the sizes fairly evenly represented.
A few suggestions from the customers were that B*B offer more colors,
petite sizes, and edgier pieces which will be taken into consideration in
the future.

Planograms
The two planograms are separated into two walls. This would create ample space for the larger pieces to
be displayed such as the longer dresses, blazers, and wide pants, but also leaves room for coordinating
accessories. Since all the pieces are for work wear and meant to have a crisp clean appearance, they will be
hung.
Wall A features a traditional work theme with an assortment of pants in all styles and sizes. Above the
pants customers can mix and match blouses and blazers to create their own suit. The overall theme will be
professional yet welcoming to women who would like to try our line. Additional signage will promote the
various looks and suits that our customers can tailor to their needs and lead them to take a look at Wall B.
Wall B features the skirts and dresses of the line. It emphasizes items that could be worn for work and for
even a date night or other events after work. Pieces can also be mixed and matched with all items from
Wall A. The overall theme of Wall B will be professional and trendy. It will encourage our customers to
take their work wear basics up a notch with more color or with our pleather options.

Window Display
Lane Bryant’s window display will feature key pieces from the
B*B line. Using plus size mannequins so that our shoppers can
get a better feel of how our clothes will look on them, the
Popular Pant will be shown in two outfits paired with our Work
Flow Blouse and as a suit with the Suits Me Blazer. They showed
positive results with the customers so showing them in the
window should draw in customers who want to see more of the
line. One skirt and one dress will also be shown to give our
customers more options in their work wardrobe. Since Smoke
Signal and Go Deep were popular colors among the test market
they will be displayed as well as New Nude and Bold Brown for
neutrals for women who may be looking for a more traditional
palette. As with the planograms, pieces can be mixed to create
new looks. To introduce the line window signs will advertise
“Workday Wonderful from $45!”

  • 5. Part 1: Market Research Parent Brand Lane Bryant is part the Ascena Retail Group Incorporated. The Ascena Retail Group was formed in January 2011 and includes the brands Maurices, Catherines, Dressbarn, Justice, and Lane Bryant. Part of the Charming Group, Lane Bryant joined Ascena in 2012 and has made a strong presence. Its - headquarters are located at 933 MacArthur Boulevard in Mahwah, NJ 07430. They can be reached at 551-777-6700 or emailed at investor.relations@ascenaretail.com, Consumers can also find additional information by going to http://www.ascenaretail.com/lanebryant.jsp. (Ascena, 2015) The name Ascena represents ascending to new heights and Lane Bryant has great potential to take the Ascena Retail Group there in the future with their successful business model. Despite the slow economy of 2008 and 2009, Lane Bryant saw steady sales just over the one billion dollar mark but saw a slight decline in 2010 to $945 million. In 2011 revenue began to pick up again and reached nearly $978 million and has grown steadily since. In 2012 the merger of Charming Shops, which included Lane Bryant and Catherines, helped Ascena see a 27% growth in sales and a 30% increase in their online sales. Last year Lane Bryant continued to grow and saw a 3% rise in performance despite the closure of many stores. The Ascena Retail Group as a whole reported net sales of $4,790.6. (Ascena annual report, 2015) Although Ascena offers five distinct brands they have one common mission, to make people feel good about themselves. Their statement is that “through an engaging store experience, convenient locations, and of course offering fashion at a great value, we dress her from tween years into adulthood, and help her look and feel her very best every step of the way.” They realize that women want to feel and look great and clothing can definitely give her the confidence to do so. This statement also encompasses all of their brands well since they offer apparel choices for tweens to mature ladies in items from sportswear to designer inspired dresses. (Ascena, May 26, 2015). Code of Conduct Ascena Retail Group strives to live by a code of engagement. It states that “With Integrity: Honest, fairness, and transparency guide our every action. With Excellence: We continuously elevate, improve and have the highest expectations for ourselves and our fellow associates. With Respect: We respect everyone, value differences and look for opportunities to collaborate. With Passion: We serve as a catalyst for positive impact and change. With community: We demonstrate and live the principles of care and giving back.” (LinkedIn, May 26, 2015). Lane Bryant Then and Now Lane Bryant got its start in New York by founder Lena Bryant. In 1900 she started the line as the first apparel retailer dedicated to the plus size woman. Four years later she opened the first store on Fifth Avenue which was the beginning of a national chain of stores throughout the years. In the 90s Lane
  • 6. Bryant began a transformation into offering a more fashionable selection of plus sized clothing and hasn’t looked back. Today they are still on the top of the charts when it comes to plus size apparel. Today they are known as the most famous plus size retailer and you can’t look at any blog, magazine, or news article related to plus apparel without seeing their name mentioned. Lane Bryant currently offers a stylish selection of plus sized apparel from sizes 14 to 28. They also have a selection of accessories and shoes in wider widths from sizes 7 to 12. One of their best sellers is their Cacique line of intimate apparel. Everything is on trend and tailored to the plus size woman so that she does not feel left out of current styles offered by regular sized brands. Their styles range from casual sporty offerings to career wear to designer gowns that can be worn for a night out on the town. Lane Bryant currently has 805 stores nationwide in 46 states. These include outlet stores which offer past season’s and overstocked merchandise as well as some current items at a discount compared to the regular stores. The majority of stores are located on the eastern half of the United States from Minneapolis down to Texas and spread over to the east coast. There are also several in California and a few each in Washington, Oregon, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. As of this figure they have opened a few more stores and have been successful in moving out of malls and into strip mall settings. So far they have not expanded overseas, but they do offer international shipping on their website to continents such as Africa, Australia, and South America. (Lane Bryant, 2015). Map of Lane Bryant Locations: (Yahoo Images, June 19, 2015). Lane Bryant has remained competitive and on top of the plus size industry since the beginning and today their sales compared to their competition reflect that. A few of their competitors are Ashley Stewart and Avenue which both filed for bankruptcy in recent years and are still struggling with sales. Although Lane Bryant saw an 11.8 percent drop in net income to $133.4 million they gained 1.6 percent
  • 7. in revenue to $4.79 billion which still put them ahead of their plus size competitors. (Business Source Complete, 2015). Target Market The main categories of merchandise offered at Lane Bryant are career wear, casual wear, dresses, and their popular Cacique line of intimate apparel. Women can find blouses, trendy pants, and even suits that flatter the figure and make them look professional for work. Their average work pant is around $60 and for around $80 you can find a matching jacket. They also offer jeans, tees, and sports apparel that range from $20 to around $70. In the past few years they have collaborated with designers such as Isabel Toledo, Lela Rose, and Sophie Theallet to create beautiful gowns and other apparel that range from $70 to $160. Their Cacique brand which is known for its quality in plus size bras ranges in price from around $10 to $50. As for the quality of Lane Bryant’s apparel, a lot of plus size blogs give positive reviews. Most think the prices are a little steep but are willing to pay for the stylish looks and quality. On their website you can also find numerous four and five star reviews on most of their items. (Lane Bryant, June 19, 2015). Geo Lace cami bra (20 reviews)product details Overall Rating: "Love this bra, I love how I feel in it and it looks great. This is my go to bra now."... I like shirts to go below my waist but I am top heavy. These are the perfect length."... (read full reviews) (Lane Bryant.com, June 18, 2015). The target market of Lane Bryant is plus sized women ages 35-55. Their target also includes women who are established in their career who are willing to spend a little more on their apparel because they know it will fit right and want quality items. In the past they have tried to target younger women with more youthful designed clothing but it did not work out because their true target market was turned off. (Personal Conversation, May, 2015).
  • 8. Lane Bryant’s Apparel The designs Lane Bryant offers its customers range from basic to designer items. Lane Bryant has several styles of basic tees and bottoms which are designed with more length than average garments so that they fit the plus size figure better. They have also designed their own runway inspired line called 6th & Lane which is “dedicated to the fearlessly modern woman.” As they state “The world is our runway and we own it.” (Plus Model Magazine, May 26, 2015). While most of their designs are done in-house, as mentioned previously, they have been ramping up their designs with their collaborations to create a more haute couture feel for customers. Their designs are based off of what is on trend at the moment and they do a good job of keeping up to date with them. Apparel Sources Lane Bryant’s apparel is sourced from many different manufacturers. One place they get their denim jeans from is Sunrise Brands. (Hoovers, May 26, 2015). Sunrise Brands offers a full service experience from merchandising, sourcing, manufacturing, to marketing support. Their headquarters are in Los Angeles, CA while their sourcing office is located in Hong Kong. (Sunrise Brands, nd) The majority of their items are made in China. (Hoovers, May 26, 2015). Another manufacturer of clothing for Lane Bryant is Assoluto, Inc. They have factories in the USA, Mexico, Turkey, Peru, and Bangladesh. Assoluto also offers design, sourcing, and all aspects of pre and final production. Their California facility performs cutting, first and final pattering, fit approvals, fabric testing, and has a design and product management team. (LexisNexis, May 26, 2015). Last year Ascena Retail Group opened a new services office and national distribution center in Pataskala, OH. The offices handle sourcing and centralized procurement services to all of Ascena’s retail brands and the distribution center also serves all brands. (Zacks, May 26, 2014). The new facility is a hub for distribution since most Lane Bryant stores are located on the eastern half of the country. Most shipments can be made within two days to 70% of their stores. (Reuters, May 26, 2012). Marketing Tactics Lane Bryant’s current marketing plan is one of the most recognized for a plus size retailer. Last month they launched their “I’m No Angel” campaign and it has been a big hit. They took to social media to air mini segments of plus sized models baring their bodies in an effort to come back at Victoria’s Secret’s angels being seen as having the perfect bodies. Each week they unveil a new model and show her personal segment about why she is not an angel. They also have a contest going on where customers and fans can post a selfie that fits with the theme to win a trip to NYC and a $2,000 gift card. They are also great at communicating to their customers by showing outfits each day and keeping up with posts on their social media sites. They post current sales and emails can be sent to customers who sign up to receive them. In the stores Lane Bryant associates are usually great at being attentive to customers and figuring out what they need. (Facebook, May 27, 2015),(Huffington Post, June 18, 2015). Competitors A few of Lane Bryant’s competitors are Avenue and JC Penney. (Hoovers, May 27, 2015). Avenue stores offer apparel on par with Lane Bryant and their stores are set up similarly. Like Lane Bryant one side is
  • 9. dedicated to career wear while the other has casual pieces. Shoppers can also find wide width shoes, accessories, and intimate apparel in plus sizes near the back of the stores. On one of the most popular plus size fashion blogger’s site, the Curvy Fashionista, you can find her updates on many plus size retailers including Avenue, Lane Bryant, and more of their competitors. (Curvy Fashionista, May 27, 2015). JCPenney, while not solely a retailer of plus sizes, offers a plus size section that also competes with Lane Bryant. Their Worthington line of career wear has comparable styles and quality to that of Lane Bryant’s. Formerly under the name United Retail Group, Avenue stores were bought out by the private equity firm Versa Capital Management in 2013 after declaring bankruptcy. Versa is based in Philadelphia and specializes in restructuring firms. Most recently they acquired The Wet Seal Retail Operations which declared bankruptcy earlier this year. Other brands affiliated with Versa Capital Management are bell Howell, Bob’s Stores, and Standard Parking. Since they are a private group, very little financial information was available for public viewing. (Versa Capital Management, 2015) (Avenue, June 20, 2015). Avenue Avenue is a plus size only retailer that offers fashionable merchandise in the mid-price point range. Like some Lane Bryant stores they are found in strip malls and can also be shopped online. Avenue has around 300 stores in 35 states and have opened at least four more recently. They have not opened any stores overseas as of today but do offer shipping from their online store to Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada.(Hoovers, May 27, 2015). Avenue stores carry an assortment of stylish work staples, casual tops and bottoms, wide width shoes, accessories, and like Lane Bryant they have their own line of intimates known as Avenue Body. Unlike Lane Bryant they do offer sizes up to 32 and also offer petites. (JCPenney, June 20, 2015). JCPenney On the other side of the spectrum Lane Bryant’s department store competitor JCPenney is a publicly held corporation. JCP is headquartered in Texas and currently operates department stores, an online site, catalogs, and is a partner with Sephora. As of today they have 1,062 stores in 49 states and in Puerto Rico. They are mostly found in mall settings but can also be standalone stores. (S&P Capital IQ, May 27, 2015). JCPenney is also an American based company with no stores overseas but they will ship merchandise to over 80 countries. (JCPenney, May 29, 2015). The target market for JCP is women ages 25 to 55. I believe that it has been hard for them to identify with their target market in recent years but that they are aiming to attract middle income women who search for deals on quality merchandise. They strive to offer their customers an upscale department store feel but with price points in the moderate range. Their main selection of merchandise ranges from home décor and bedding to apparel for the whole family. They have a selection of brand names but the
  • 10. majority of their items are sold under their own private labels. When I need a specific item such as a nice button down blouse or work pants and have no luck at Lane Bryant, I usually head to JCPenney where I can often find what I need for an even better price. Their plus size department is a good rival to Lane Bryant. JCPenney has had its share of sales slumps in the past five years. After trying to rebrand and changing their sales concept they saw a decline from $17.6 billion in 2011 to $11.8 billion in 2014. Last year’s sales did see a rise to $12.3 billion. (Marketwatch, May 28, 2015). So far this year JCP has reported first quarter sales of $2.86 billion which was a 3.4% increase from last year’s sales which may mean that customers are now starting to return after being alienated during the changes. (JCPenney, May 28, 2015). Swot Analysis: Lane Bryant Strengths Weaknesses Strong brand name Creative marketing Years in business High prices compared to competitors Negative perceptions Declining sales Opportunities Threats Expanded shoes and accessories selections More fresh ideas Fast fashion retailers New plus size retail options Strengths Lane Bryant has its biggest strength in its name. It has been one of the largest and well known specialty retailers of plus sizes since its beginning. Their name is strong enough that nearly every piece of merchandise in the store is labeled with it and they don’t have to depend on brand names to draw shoppers in. Compared to Lane Bryant, Avenue’s brand is almost unrecognizable to those who aren’t seeking out plus size options. JCPenney does have a strong name but not particularly for plus size apparel. Another strength is the marketing done by Lane Bryant compared to its competitors. Although they do have such a strong brand name, Lane Bryant is also pretty aggressive at their attempts to reach its customers. They have stirred up controversy with their commercials featuring plus size models in lingerie, attractive catalogs, and direct mail campaigns, regular emails featuring sales and new merchandise, and an active social media presence.
  • 11. Weaknesses A weakness of Lane Bryant is that their price points are often seen as too high for a lot of shoppers. In today’s economy most consumers want the most bang for their buck and are constantly seeking out deals and sales. With a pair of jeans retailing for around $60, Lane Bryant may drive away some women who would like to make their money stretch further than just buying one or two pieces. Although Avenue’s prices have risen over the years, they are still overall cheaper than Lane Bryant and offer more sales promotions. Most apparel is also cheaper at JCPenney and their quality is nearly just as good as Lane Bryant’s. These two competitors, along with a score of others have created another weakness for the retailer. With better prices and discounts being offered at other plus size stores Lane Bryant has seen a drop in revenue over the years. Another weakness that Lane Bryant has is that since they have been around for so long their name may be associated with negative stereotypes of plus size women. Negative attitudes about plus size apparel could potentially deter customers who are afraid to give them a try. They also have a reputation of being boring or old lady like in style but they are striving to improve their image all the time. Joining the Ascena Retail Group could have been the boost they need to gain a fresh prospective on their customer base and for their customers to also get the chance to see them in a new way. Opportunities One way that Lane Bryant could get a better leg up on competitors is to offer a bigger selection of shoes and accessories in store. They already sell shoes in wide widths which draws some customers in but their assortment is pretty limited. Their competitor Avenue features a full sized shoe section with plenty of stylish shoes compared to the one or two racks offered by Lane Bryant. Another opportunity for Lane Bryant to stay ahead of competitors is to keep doing what they do best but perhaps also add more excitement to their brand. Their current I’m No Angel campaign has been very successful and their line of Cacique intimates is one of the best-selling lines in plus size apparel which proves that their target customer wants to feel just as stylish and also as sexy as regular sized women. Plus size apparel sales have been on the rise in recent years and last year in the 12 months ending in April, sales rose 4.7% to $17.5 billion outpacing the growth of women’s apparel overall which only rose 1%. (Karr, A., 2014) Moving forward, in order to capture the potential billions of dollars that is out there, Lane Bryant will have to keep holding the attention of their loyal shoppers plus attract new ones with more fresh, trendy, and sexier ideas. Threats A threat that Lane Bryant faces is competition from newer retailers that cater to plus size women and offer stylish apparel at more affordable prices. Lane Bryant might be the first name most think of when they need something but aside from their designer pieces, customers can find similar items at Fashion to Figure, Ashley Stewart, or even Torrid. All three of them have stores as well as online sites and Fashion to Figure and Ashley Stewart both have lower price points. Torrid has definitely grown over the years and has become quite popular with more stores opening up in profitable areas. These three retailers have the potential to take away Lane Bryant shoppers who seek a younger and trendier look sometimes. They also bring to mind a second threat of fast fashion. With technology changing the pace of everything today consumers always want the latest trend. Lane Bryant will also have to keep up with retailers that
  • 12. offer their shoppers a constant fresh assortment of merchandise such as Forever 21 which also a plus size section. Comparing Competitor’s Offerings Looking at Lane Bryant’s and its competitors, JCPenney and Avenue’s websites they do have several things in common. One big trend that I found was that all three prominently feature apparel in the colors black, white, blue, and a coral shade for their newest merchandise. Most pieces are flowy and an asymmetrical hemline is popular with both Lane Bryant’s and Avenue’s collections. JCPenney has more offerings with regular hemlines, and also features more assorted colors in their apparel which tends to be more basic. . (Lane Bryant, May 28, 2015). For transitioning into the fall, Lane Bryant and JCPenney both feature a wide leg pant in solids and prints, while Avenue’s options are more traditional. All three sites will still offer several options of midi and maxi dresses. (Avenue, June 19, 2015), (JCPenney, June 19, 2015), (Lane Bryant, June 19, 2015). JCPenney’s website offers lots of information to any consumer who wishes to know more about the brand. From details on financial figures to their latest press release about how first quarter sales have risen, they keep their customers up to date. On the other hand Avenue’s website leaves a lot to be desired on information. While they do feature a great selection of clothing and accessories their company information is pretty nonexistent and very difficult to find even on other sites. Although information is also hard to find on Lane Bryant’s page consumers can dig deeper on their parent company Ascena Retail Group’s site. Their latest press release touts there acquisition of Ann Inc. (Ascena, May 29, 2015). Some choices Lane Bryant could consider for the upcoming fall season are more color options such as their competitors are offering. Looking at their new merchandise it is mostly black and white and offering apparel in more colors will give their customers more choices and potentially lead to more purchases. Also offering more silhouettes will give their customers more choices to find looks best on their fuller figure. One example shown below is a printed dress with several colors that breaks up the black and white in it. It also comes with a cardigan which customers can wear into the fall. Denim is also a category that they could excite their customers more with. They already offer wide leg options in prints but a denim one would also keep them on trend for the season. The third example shown expands on the black and white theme of their new merchandise but does it in a sleeker silhouette than the dresses currently offered. • 15. Target Customer Sandra: Sandra represents the everyday Lane Bryant shopper. She is 45 years old, lives in the suburbs of Chicago, and is an administrative assistant for a local marketing company. She is married, has three children, and owns her home. After several years of experience, Sandra makes around $55,000 a year. Her husband also works and on the weekends and they are active with family, friends, and the community. They enjoy going to concerts and other events downtown, having friends over for dinner, and just spending time with the family whenever they can. Overall Sandra is a busy, working, and active mom that also likes to keep up with the latest trends but also look professional.
  • 16. Sandra shops at her local Lane Bryant located in a strip mall near her home and also online when her busy schedule doesn’t permit her to shop during normal hours or when she just wants to relax in the comfort of her home. She visits the store at least once each season to find out what is new and what pieces she can add to her wardrobe. She also visits the online site during the holidays for gifts for family members and when special sales are happening. Sometimes she stops in the store out of necessity when she needs to replace a worn out pair of work pants or blouse because it is so convenient to her home. During her average visit to Lane Bryant she usually spends around $150. She is right on par with what the average woman her age spends on clothing each year. According to a chart by Goldman Sachs, women Sandra’s age spend the most on clothing out of women ranging from 20 to 75 years of age. (Business Insider, 2013) In 2012 women in her income range spent an average of $556 on apparel annually, but because plus size women normally spend more for clothing than average size women I believe it might be slightly higher for them. (The, N.S.E.. 2014) When Sandra shops her local Lane Bryant store or online she takes ideas with her that she’s seen on her social media feeds. One popular plus size page that she follows is Daily Venus Diva which shows her stylish pieces from various plus size retailers several times a day and includes links to where she can purchase them. It also keeps her updated on the latest news from the plus size model industry and blogs so that she can see what other women are wearing and be inspired. Another site Sandra may look for fashion advice is The Curvy Fashionista. Because she is a fan of Lane Bryant she can also view posts with their latest merchandise. She also follows competitors such as Ashley Stewart, Avenue, JCPenney, and Macy’s where she can see and compare looks that interest her. Image from Flikr
  • 17. For fall 2015 Sandra is seeking looks that she’s seen on the runway, on social media, and on her favorite celebrities which she can adapt to fit her own lifestyle. Since she works in an office she wants to look professional but stand out with unique and fashionable pieces. After checking out the DailyVenusDiva site and seeing that the Gap’s spinoff line of Plus sizes called Eloquii has launched a new look book, Sandra decides she wants to look for dresses with bold prints and midi skirts that she can wear from work and perhaps after work hours to events. (Dailyvenusdiva, 2015) For work she thinks that high waist pants with wider legs would suit her because they will even out her fuller figure and still look on trend. She likes the idea of pairing them with longer cut blazers for a lean feminine silhouette. She also will be seeking basics that she can pair with the trendy pieces. • 18. Trend Fall 2015 Fall 2015 will continue the trend of bold prints, lace details, and wider leg pants. Clothes will have a tailored look inspired by menswear but with feminine details that will complement the figure. Lengths for tops, jackets, and coats will be longer rather than the cropped trends of past seasons. A few must have items for the fall will be sharp tailored looking pants, long length jackets, pleated midi skirts, tailored jumpsuits, structured handbags, and menswear inspired shoes. (WGSN, 2015) (Donegar,2015) (Fashionising, 2015) As the season changes so will some of the fabrics being used. Fall’s featured fabrics will include tweed, leather, cotton, polyester blends, and suede. These fabrics will have bold prints inspired by ethnic prints, geometric designs, and nature. Houndstooth and plaid patterns will also be prominent this season. The colors offered will be earthy and mineral inspired. Classic tones in nudes, black, gray, and even metallic will dominate women’s apparel. Also deep hues of reds, blues, and greens will add a pop of color to outfits. • 19. In WGSN one trend that attracted me and inspired my line was Essence. It was inspired by small details that make a statement such as pleats, perforations, and unique closures. Materials such as leather, lace, and textured woven fabrics were used. The lookbook featured patterned suits influenced by menswear, extra-long coats, knit sweaters, and overall timeless classic pieces. (WGSN, 2015) Maker, a 2016 Fall/Winter theme in Doneger also helped support the mood of my line. They described it as “quiet refinement” which I think says it perfectly. In both trends the color palette was very similar and were perfect fall shades for everyone. (Donegar, 2015) Sketches from WGSN, 2015. Photo from Donegar, 2015.
  • 20. The theme for my Fall 2015 line for Lane Bryant is career wear inspired by the runway trends but toned down for the office called B*B which stands for Be Beautiful . Based on the theme of Essence in WGSN which had earthy tones with clean lines and lots of details such as quilting, perforations, grommets, and pleats. I also was inspired by the women’s pieces featured on Doneger and Fashionising so I included long tailored pants, blazers, and longer cut blouses. The silhouette for B*B’s tops are slightly fitted and longer cut for the coverage that plus size women desire. Pants are also long with wider legs with a tailored look and feel. B*B’s fall line features fabrics suited for the season and for the career minded woman. Fabrics such as tweed, poplin, oxford cotton, textured knits, and pleather used for a fun zipper detailed blazer will be seen. Prints found will include a houndstooth pattern that is always a classic look. Plaids and stripe prints will also found on some of the key pieces in the line. The color palette used will range from toned down earthy shades which will complement lots of pieces our customers already own to reds, greens, and blues which will add a pop of color to the working woman’s day at the office. • 45. Quick Costing • By performing Quick Costing of B*B’s Fall line we can estimate the costs of producing each garment and decide if they can be produced within the set budget. Using the unit cost of each item and factoring in that we aim to spend 60% of that on the fabric, we can get the target cost of the materials. (Unit cost*.60=Target cost) Compare this with the Fabric quick cost (Yardage*Wholesale cost) to determine if the item will be profitable or not. • Since B*B is designed for the plus size figure one yard of fabric was added to each recommended yardage to accommodate the needed length and width of each item.

Skirts and pants will make up 35% which will reflect the upcoming trend of tailored wide leg pants and mid length skirts. The rest of the line will offer two choices of dresses and blazers which will round out the last 20%. (Doneger, 2015.) Sizes will be distributed based on what has sold best in Lane Bryant stores. According to sales associates in Chapel Hill Mall of Akron, OH, the best selling size overall is the 18/20. Since their main shoppers come in seeking plus sizes the least popular is the 14/16 which they can find in many other department stores. The sales associates also noted that they markdown quite a bit of apparel in the 24/26 range. (Personal Conversation, June 4, 2015.) Their observations coincide with the fact that the average American woman is now 166lbs and has a waist size measuring 37.5 inches so, including the instance that most stores carry sizes 14 and 16, their size distribution is a fair reflection. The most popular piece chosen was the Bold Blazer. The Zip Skirt was not purchased at all which may mean that it is not a viable option for work. The colors Smoke Signal and Ravishing were an overall success which went against B*B’s purchase order of more items in the neutral earth tones than the brighter colors. Go Deep also was a color that was bought by the customers. even more than all of the neutrals. These findings show that plus size women of all ages would prefer more color choices than just plain neutral shades. The Popular Pant and Lovely Lengths Pant outsold the trendier Hello Pant which features a wide leg and high waist so this may show that these women would rather wear a more traditional cut leg for work. Sizes ordered were a good reflection of the merchandise plan with only one customer needing a size 14/16 and the rest of the sizes fairly evenly represented. A few suggestions from the customers were that B*B offer more colors, petite sizes, and edgier pieces which will be taken into consideration in the future.

  • 86. Planograms The two planograms are separated into two walls. This would create ample space for the larger pieces to be displayed such as the longer dresses, blazers, and wide pants, but also leaves room for coordinating accessories. Since all the pieces are for work wear and meant to have a crisp clean appearance, they will be hung. Wall A features a traditional work theme with an assortment of pants in all styles and sizes. Above the pants customers can mix and match blouses and blazers to create their own suit. The overall theme will be professional yet welcoming to women who would like to try our line. Additional signage will promote the various looks and suits that our customers can tailor to their needs and lead them to take a look at Wall B. Wall B features the skirts and dresses of the line. It emphasizes items that could be worn for work and for even a date night or other events after work. Pieces can also be mixed and matched with all items from Wall A. The overall theme of Wall B will be professional and trendy. It will encourage our customers to take their work wear basics up a notch with more color or with our pleather options.

  • 88. Window Display Lane Bryant’s window display will feature key pieces from the B*B line. Using plus size mannequins so that our shoppers can get a better feel of how our clothes will look on them, the Popular Pant will be shown in two outfits paired with our Work Flow Blouse and as a suit with the Suits Me Blazer. They showed positive results with the customers so showing them in the window should draw in customers who want to see more of the line. One skirt and one dress will also be shown to give our customers more options in their work wardrobe. Since Smoke Signal and Go Deep were popular colors among the test market they will be displayed as well as New Nude and Bold Brown for neutrals for women who may be looking for a more traditional palette. As with the planograms, pieces can be mixed to create new looks. To introduce the line window signs will advertise “Workday Wonderful from $45!” Style Items Color Size Placement 2147-S Shine Blouse Smoke Signal 18/20 1 7025-G Flaunt It Skirt Go Deep 18/20 1 2254-G Work Flow Blouse Go Deep 18/20 2 4212-BB Popular Pant Bold Brown 18/20 2 7396-S Pleats Please Dress Smoke Signal 18/20 3 3255-N Suits Me Blazer New Nude 18/20 4 4212-N Popular Pant New Nude 18/20 4 1, 2, 3, 4 5,6 Size 18 Plus Size Mannequin x 4 Window Signs x 2
