Representation is how a social group is depicted in a particular way, such as in a magazine. The document shows an example magazine cover that represents the rock music genre conventionally with cover lines on the left side. However, the author's magazine cover depicts two models and places the cover lines at the bottom instead of the left to avoid covering up one of the models.

REPRESENT
PARTICULAR
SOCIAL
GROUPS?
By Ethan Cole-Wilkin
2. What is representation?
■ Representation is the descriptive way of showing someone or
something in a particular way, this case a magazine.
3. How I represented social groups
■ Figure 1 shows and stereotypical
rock-genre magazine. I chose Kerrang
as it is the same genre as my
magazine (figure 2). Conventionally,
the cover lines would be on the left
side of the magazine, like they are in
figure 1.They are conventionally on
the left because magazines are
normally stacked on top of each other
so you can see the cover lines of each
magazine. However my magazine has
the cover lines at the bottom of the
front cover, not conventionally on the
left side. I did this because I had two
models in my front cover photo, and I
did not want one of them to be
completely covered up by the cover
lines, so I decided to put them at the
bottom.
