Introduction and Overview
What is the Boys & Girls Club?
The Boys & Girls Club is a nationwide non-profit organization that harbors a safe
place for growth and learning for children of all ages. Each county individually conducts
their learning and development programs through volunteers and employees. They find
local events and activities for the children to participate in, ranging from attending the
Peace Run to meeting a local astronaut to promote science learning.
The annual auctions at the branches are an important part of their annual budget
for the children. In Whatcom County, the branches are moving from being seen by the
community as individual branches into one whole branch.

Skills Acquired
4
1. Social Media
Through weekly postings in the social media, I was able to monitor what content
and times of day (to post) were the most effective in reaching more of our target. Using
this information, I adjusted my posts accordingly.
2. B2B Relations
Throughout the internship I reached out to local businesses for donations such as,
but not limited to, donations for the annual auction, photography services for the club,
other events such as a fundraiser for the club.
3. Photoshop/InDesign
I can proficiently use both Photoshop and InDesign as I created this year’s auction
material for the Blaine Branch.
4. Event Planning
I planned and coordinated events such as a photo shoot with a local business for
the kids and other social media events.
Letters of Evaluation
Midterm Evaluation
October 6, 2015
5
Dear Wendy Wilhelm,
This letter is Evani LaCour’s midterm evaluation for her marketing & communication
internship with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County Blaine Branch.
Evani has been consistent with her time commitment and has been working 20 hours
per week on the marketing needs of the Blaine Branch. She has scheduled her time to
be at the Club at least one day per week and the remaining hours spent working
independently from Bellingham.
I believe Evani is meeting or exceeding expectations related to her learning objectives.
She recently secured the professional services of a local photographer for a photo shoot
and is in the process of using these images for promotional material. Evani has taken
responsibility of all communication needs for both the weekly Facebook posts and
monthly website articles. In addition she has partnered with the BellinghamBells and
received free game tickets for Club members and with AB Crepes for a fundraising event
in august.
This has been a great placement for Evani and I am looking forward to seeing the
completed marketing material for the annual auction and dinner that will be part of her
final project.
Sincerely,
Joel Todd
Blaine Branch Director
Letter of Recommendation
August 10th, 2014
To whom it may concern;
6
It has been a pleasure to work with Evani LaCour this term as her marketing internship
supervisor. She has met all requirements for her learning objectives and intern hours
and has added additional learning activities as the summer progressed.
One of the biggest challenges that she easily navigated was the production of an
invitation card for the Blaine auction. This was a project that took many turns
throughout the process but she was able to work closely with the Marketing Director of
the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County to finalize an excellent finished product.
In addition, Evani took full responsibility of weekly Facebook posts that highlighted our
direct impact and brought awareness to the amazing events that happen inside the
Club. Like all the projects she worked on I was never concerned about if it would get
completed as she always provided clear communication and needed little to no
supervision.
I thank Evani for all of her work that she has completed on behalf of the youth in the
Blaine community and I am excited she will be volunteering for the next few weeks to
complete more marketing projects related to our annual auction.
Sincerely,
Joel Todd

I. B2B Relations:Bellingham Bells
8
This is an event I coordinated with the Bellingham Bells. As a
condition to receive tickets donated to the Club, each club held a
Bellingham Bells mascot-coloring contest in which they chose three
winners from each branch to receive the tickets.
The original goal with this project was to create a long-term
relationship with the Bellingham Bells as they are an important
part of the Bellingham community. With this event, I wanted to
extend our reach to the community.
The overall event was majorly successful, coming in at the second
most popular post on the Facebook page.
9
10
This post reached 450 people (average through our page is 100),
had 18 likes and comments, 142 page clicks, and 2 shares.
In creating a long-term relationship with the Bells, we also took a countdown photo
with them, which received a lot of positive feedback from their page

II. Auction Design
Designing the auction material allowed me to learn Photoshop and
InDesign. I createda few different versions and edited according
to Joel’s requests. The last version show is the final version that
will be distributed at the auction, in the newspaper, the invites,
and all other auction advertising material. Due to the frequent
layout changes, only the final version has both the inside and
outside layout along with the real tagline. The taglines on the other
designs were only placeholders for the final tagline.
I helped distribute the invite along with the other advertising such
as putting it in the local newspaper, Facebook, and on our website.

July Newsletter story:
Here at the Blaine Branch, we strive to have a meaningful impact on the lives of the
kids that come here. This month, we want to share with the community a story
about one of these kids that has exemplified the qualities of the club.
We welcome you to Meet Kai and read about his amazing story.
Kai is currently a senior in high school and volunteers at the Blaine Branch. What is
special about Kai and his impact here
at the club is that he has lived in this
environment since he was a kid.
Kai first began coming to the club
when he was 7 and has been coming
ever since. When asked what made
him first come here he said, “I started
coming to the club because I needed
proper supervision while my mother
was at work.” Many of the kids here
come for the same reasons as Kai.
Their parents work hard and they
need somewhere to socialize with kids
their age while still being monitored
by responsible adults. He says that his
time at the club created invaluable
relationships and that he “still [has]
five or six friends that [he] talks to
today. ” He also described his
friendships at the club as “fun-filled”
and said he had is glad he was able to get to know them at the club.
Once he was of age, Kai was able to volunteer at the club he knew so well in hopes of
impacting the lives of the young members today. He recalls a few of the staff and
what they were able to do for him when he attended. The two staff members that
stood out to him were Jason and Jeff. Kai says that Jason had taught him how to play
pool and Jeff was always there to give helpful advice and even found him a job as a
referee. The positive experiences with his staff members are what led Kai to look up
to them and become one himself, “working with kids is fun, I have always wanted to
be [a staff member] since I was young.”
18
Staff members like Kai are valuable to the club’s kids. As a young man who grew up
in the club, he brings his knowledge and experience to then enrich the whole
experience for the young members who look up to him. Kai says that “[he tries] to be
a role model to them. A lot of them look up to me.”
Through Kai’s story, we can also see the improvements and recognition the Boys &
Girls club has gained through the years. When Kai attended the branch he said that
it was “pretty cool but not very supervised. Now, we actually have stuff planned and
have activities. There is a lot more awareness now than back then.”
Kai’s story is one of thousands and is an example of how the club impacts its
members. Now, at 18, he feels as though the club has taught him how to socialize
better with kids and be more empathetic towards others. With his help, and others
like him, we can only continue striving to create positive experiences for the
members that we hope will stay with them as they progress into adulthood.
19
IV. Social Media
I was responsible for posting all of the social media material for
Blaine. After posting, I kept track of the post reach, likes,
comments, and other data such as when the post was most
successful. For the posts that were more successful than the others,
I would note the content of the post to monitor if a certain type of
content had a higher success rate among our target market. The
majority of my posts performed average to above average
compared with posts from other branches (based on data gathered
from reach, clicks, likes, comments, and shares).
Through my posts, I also hoped to spark more interaction with
our target such as comments and shares.

  • 19. 19 IV. Social Media I was responsible for posting all of the social media material for Blaine. After posting, I kept track of the post reach, likes, comments, and other data such as when the post was most successful. For the posts that were more successful than the others, I would note the content of the post to monitor if a certain type of content had a higher success rate among our target market. The majority of my posts performed average to above average compared with posts from other branches (based on data gathered from reach, clicks, likes, comments, and shares). Through my posts, I also hoped to spark more interaction with our target such as comments and shares.
