The document describes a project to develop an inductive wireless charging system for urban buses called IN-WIRE. The system would allow originally hybrid buses to operate in fully electric mode and charge their batteries either through DC charging at night in garages or through on-road static inductive "fast" charging at bus stops under 10 minutes. This non-intrusive charging system with 90-95% efficiency compared to DC charging would optimize battery life, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, lower CO2 emissions and energy consumption for bus fleets. The system will be developed with 8 charging stations and involve trials with 24 buses across 4 urban bus operators.

Project description: INductive WIREless charging system for urban buses
(IN-WIRE)
Development of a system that allows vehicle performance in 100% electric mode (for originally hybrid
buses), during all hours of service. Allowing dual mode battery charging: DC at night in garages, and on-
road static inductive "fast" charging at stops header (beginning and end of bus line). The target
autonomy can be achieved with stops below 10 minutes in each header, in order not to disturb the
regulation of the bus lines (even in the most demanding transport networks).
The solution ensures a charging infrastructure compatible with multiple bus lines, when sharing
headers, and an automatic charging system, easy to use and with low visual impact on public space,
which can be managed from the Operation Assistance System (OAS) control center of urban buses.
This non-intrusive charging system with comparable efficiency by 90- 95% to the DC charging, not only
optimizes battery life and vehicle, but reduces vehicle maintenance costs, CO2 emissions and energy
consumption of vehicle fleet.
The system will be developed in 4 different urban bus operators: 8 charging stations and 24 buses in
total.
