3. What is IVF?
Process of Fertilisation
IVF (In vitro fertilisation) is a process of
fertilisation where an egg is combined
with sperm outside the body, in vitro. It's
a complex series of procedures used to
help with fertility or prevent genetic
problems and assist with the conception
of a child. One full cycle of IVF takes
about three weeks
4. IVFÂ is the most effective form of
assisted reproductive technology.
The procedure can be done using
your own eggs and your partner's
sperm. Or IVF may involve eggs,
sperm or embryos from a known or
anonymous donor. In some cases, a
gestational carrier â a woman who
has an embryo implanted in her
uterus â might be used
5. Why it's done
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a treatment for
infertility or genetic problems. If IVF is
performed to treat infertility, you and your
partner might be able to try less-invasive
treatment options before attempting IVF,
including fertility drugs to increase
production of eggs or intrauterine
insemination â a procedure in which sperm
are placed directly in your uterus near the
time of ovulation. Sometimes, IVF is offered
as a primary treatment for infertility in
women over age 40. IVF can also be done if
you have certain health conditions
6. IVFÂ may be an
option if you or
your partner has
Fallopian tube damage or blockage
Ovulation disorders
Endometriosis
Uterine fibroids
Previous tubal sterilization or removal
Impaired sperm production or function
Unexplained infertility
A genetic disorder
Fertility preservation for cancer or other
health conditions
7. Risks
MULTIPLE BIRTHS
IVFÂ increases the risk of multiple births if more than one
embryo is transferred to your uterus
Research suggests that IVF slightly increases the risk that
the baby will be born early or with a low birth weight
PREMATURE DELIVERY AND LOW BIRTH WEIGHT
OVARIAN HYPERSTIMULATION SYNDROME
Use of injectable fertility drugs, such as human chorionic
gonadotropin (HCG), to induce ovulation can cause ovarian
hyperstimulation syndrome, in which your ovaries become
swollen and painful
8. Risks
MISCARRIAGE
The rate of miscarriage for women who conceive
using IVF with fresh embryos is similar to that of women
who conceive naturally â about 15% to 25% â but the rate
increases with maternal age
Use of an aspirating needle to collect eggs could possibly
cause bleeding, infection or damage to the bowel, bladder
or a blood vessel
GG-RETRIEVAL PROCEDURE COMPLICATIONS
ECTOPIC PREGNANCY
About 2% to 5% of women who use IVF will have an ectopic
pregnancy

10. How you prepare
Before beginning a cycle
of IVF using your own eggs and
sperm, you and your partner will
likely need various screenings,
including:
11. Preparations OVARIAN RESERVE TESTING
To determine the quantity and quality of your eggs, your
doctor might test the concentration of follicle-stimulating
hormone (FSH), estradiol (estrogen) and anti-mullerian
hormone in your blood during the first few days of your
menstrual cycle
If not done as part of your initial fertility evaluation, your
doctor will conduct a semen analysis shortly before the
start of an IVF treatment cycle
SEMEN ANALYSIS
INFECTIOUS DISEASE SCREENING
You and your partner will both be screened for infectious
diseases, including HIV
12. Preparations PRACTICE (MOCK) EMBRYO TRANSFER
Your doctor might conduct a mock embryo transfer to
determine the depth of your uterine cavity and the
technique most likely to successfully place the embryos into
your uterus
Your doctor will examine the inside lining of the uterus
before you start IVF
UTERINE EXAM
13. Step-by-step
through an IVF
cycle
An IVF âcycleâ is how we describe
one round of IVF treatment
starting with the first day of your
period. As part of your fertility
plan, you may start medication or
injections before the first day of
the cycle
14. IVF Process STEP - 1 (DAY 1 OF YOUR PERIOD)
The first official day of your IVF treatment cycle is day 1 of
your period. Everyoneâs body is different, and your fertility
nurse will help you understand how to identify day 1
The stimulation phase starts from day 1. In a natural
monthly cycle, your ovaries normally produce 1 egg. Youâll
take medication for 8-14 days to encourage the follicles in
your ovaries (where the eggs live) to produce more eggs
STEP - 2 (STIMULATING YOUR OVARIES)
STEP 3 (EGG RETRIEVAL)
Egg retrieval, or egg âpick upâ, is a hospital day procedure
where the eggs are collected from your ovaries. An
anaesthetist will get you ready for a general anaesthetic.
Youâll be asleep and the procedure takes about 20-30
minutes
15. IVF Process STEP - 4 (THE SPERM)
If youâre a couple planning on using fresh sperm, the male
will produce a sample the morning of the egg retrieval. If
you are using frozen or donor sperm, doctor's will have it
ready in the lab
Your fertility specialist will use the eggs they have
retrieved, still in the fluid from the follicles of the ovaries.
The doctors use powerful microscopes to find the eggs in
the fluid so they can be removed
STEP - 5 (FERTILISATION)
STEP 6 (EGG RETRIEVAL)
If the sperm fertilises the egg, it becomes an embryo.
Doctors put the embryo into a special incubator where the
conditions for growth and development are perfect
16. IVF Process STEP - 7 (EMBRYO TRANSFER)
If youâre a couple planning on using fresh sperm, the male
will produce a sample the morning of the egg retrieval. If
you are using frozen or donor sperm, doctor's will have it
ready in the lab
Approximately two weeks after your embryo transfer, youâll
have a blood test to measure your levels of the hormone
hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin)
STEP - 8 (THE FINAL BLOOD TEST)
