- The pan-European area comprises some 370 million hectares of forest. 25% of world totalThis picture shows the important contribution of Russia to the ‘green lungs’ of Europe.The importance of Forests in Europe The value of forest industries’ exports in Europe was 129 billion USD (world=228) in 2007. This amounted to 176 USD per capita (world=35) -> exports are on average 5 times more important in Europe than in the worldImportance of bioenergy is increasing rapidlyForest services are in growing need: ecosystem services, recreation and tourism, hunting, mushrooms and berries, culture etc.Within Europe, there is a variation between countries how they view the forests, and the needs related to theseIn Finland, population density is 16 people /km2 , whereas in the UK it is 244, i.e. 15 times more.
- Forests play many important roles in Europe. There are different needs for forest, and often trade-offs between these needs. Additionally, countries differ in how they view the roles of forests Issues, such as climate change, energy, and various policies require Pan-European level research, information and coordination. Therefore, there is a great need for science based research and information of forests issues in Europe. But, forest research and information is often scattered in national institutions, there is a lack of coordination, networking, information, synthesis, and linking to decision makers.EFI seeks to help to solve the above mentioned needs.Vision & Mission: Our vision is to live in a world where the sustainability of our forests and societies is secured. We will achieve this by bringing together the best possible cross-boundary knowledge and expertise, and by actively contributing to the ongoing dialogue on forests.
- The Board of the EFI is responsible for establishing and keeping under review the overall research framework and the strategy of the Institute, and it supervises the Secretariat. The Board consists of eight members, four of whom are elected by EFI Council and four by EFI Associate Members.EFI has also an Scientific Advisory Board (SAB)The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) advises the EFI Board, Directors and the scientific staff of the Institute on research, strategies and networking. It monitors EFI’s R&D activities, anticipates future research needs and stimulates research initiatives to meet those needs.SAB has 10 members.
- The Regional Offices of EFI are integral parts of the Institute and governed by Terms of Reference and EFI management practices. They address forest research and networking issues at a regional level following the EFI Strategy. Their activities bring visibility to regional forest issues by putting them into European context. Regional Offices also strengthen the EFI network by opening new avenues for funding.Mediterranean Regional Office – EFIMED, located in Barcelona, Spain.Central European Regional Office and the Observatory for European Forests (EFICENT- OEF) in Freiburg, Germany and Nancy, France.Atlantic European Regional Office – EFIATLANTIC, located in Bordeaux, France.Central-East and South-East European Regional Office – EFICEEC, located in Vienna, Austria and Jastrebarsko, CroatiaNorth European Regional Office – EFINORD, located in Copenhagen, Denmark.
- EFI’s vision is to be the leading institution conducting and advocating for forest research and facilitating forest research networking at the pan-European level. It is a provider of, and major contact point for, unbiased and policy-relevant information on European forests and forestry. In order to achieve the vision, EFI:facilitates policy support on forest related issues of European relevance;conducts research and provides expertise at the pan-European level;facilitates and stimulates forest related networking at the pan-European level;promotes the supply of unbiased and policy-relevant information on European forests and forestry; andadvocates for forest research and for scientifically sound information as a basis for policy-making on forests in Europe.Pan-European – European Members of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
