19. Europeans are facing a LASTING crisis that is casting doubts on
their plans to go on summer holiday
After years of adaptation and adjustments to preserve their holidays, a growing share of
Europeans are now having to give up on them: 54% claim that they will go on holiday this
summer, i.e. 4 points less than in 2012 and 12 points less than in 2011.
Departure plans are generally on a downward trend everywhere, but at different rhythms
according to country:
Hence Spain and Italy have experienced heavy drops since 2011; and this year, a majority of
Spaniards are now giving up on going on summer holiday (57%);
France and Belgium are also observing a downward trend but which follows on from a period of
near-stagnation last year. The French are therefore still the Europeans with the highest level of
intention to leave on summer holiday;
In Germany and Austria, the situation seems to be stabilising after the drops recorded last year;
And the UK for its part is going it alone, with a rise in plans to go on holiday.
These intentions seem to be affected by the local economic and social context, as can be
observed with Spain, which counts an unemployment rate of 26.3%, or Italy where it is
11.6%.

31. More controlled holiday organisation, notably thanks to the
Internet
The Internet, the major development in tourism over the past 50 years, is appreciated in
all the countries investigated, but above all in Italy where 53% of Italians consider the
option of organising their own holiday via the Internet during the holiday as a highly
significant improvement.
By enabling Europeans to compose their own holiday, Europeans are putting themselves
back in charge of holiday organisation:
56% make their bookings via the Internet and 31% by going straight to the website of a service
provider, such as airlines or hotels; that’s 3 points more than in 2012.
Over 7 out of 10 Europeans organise well in advance and “a la carte”, putting their services
together themselves; and more and more so in Spain
Beyond the Internet, the social networks seem to be viewed as a new and promising
tool for holiday organisation:
1 out of 5 Europeans (20%) consults or may in the future consult the social networks to choose
their holiday destination;
The Spaniards and Britons are increasingly partial to the Internet, at 32% and 27% respectively.

The Spaniards plan to stay in their own country more
51. Europeans’ motivations remain identical: holidays by the sea and
a need for rest… sun-loving has some fine days ahead
Guaranteed good weather, a desire expressed by all Europeans (65%) but particularly the
Spaniards (71%) and Italians (70%).
Climate is once again becoming the essential factor in choice of destination (for 45% of
Europeans, i.e. 3 points more than last year), and is thus placed ahead of risks of a terrorist
attack (40%) and budget (39%).
Europeans are still looking for holidays that are restful and by the sea.
The French are also particularly more sensitive to these needs than last year: 65%, i.e. 9
points more plan to leave for the seaside mainly and 63% (+7 points) want rest as a
priority.
Southern Europe is therefore a destination favoured by certain Europeans:
14% of Belgians are thinking of going to Spain in summer 2013, i.e. 7 points more than in 2012;
Most Spaniards, and in a bigger proportion than last year, will stay in their country (65%, +12
points compared to 2012).

65. The level of fear in relation to holidays has fallen back slightly
Despite a European context dominated by economic and social concerns…
…Europeans are generally less anxious about their trip than they were in the past:
They remain prudent while maintaining a similar degree of coverage over time.
Far from venturing to unknown destinations, the large majority of them stay in Europe, in
neighbouring countries with an economic, social and political context very close to their own.
…The confidence developed in the usual insurance companies for summer holidays has
been maintained and confirms the rise recorded last year: 61% of Europeans claim to
take out their insurance or assistance policy from their usual insurance or assistance
company, stable compared to 2012 and +5 points compared to 2011.

Europeans recognise the pragmatic progress made in relation to holidays…
…whether in the past 50 years:
through planning their stay made easier by the Internet
through access to more destinations, via air transport
and through contingency planning (safety, peace of mind) with the generalisation of
insurance
…Or in what they want for the next 50 years:
They emphasise a precise knowledge of the weather along with an even faster
means of transport

88. Key findings of the 2013 barometer
Europeans have now integrated the fact that the economic crisis that has hit
hard since 2008 is a lasting one and that it requires reconsidering choices, some
sacrifices, and new behaviours. For the first time in the barometer, plans to go
on holiday once, i.e. the proportion of Europeans who will go away just one
time on summer holiday, have dropped. A sign that the problem doesn’t just
involve shortening your holiday, or reducing your spending, but actually giving
up on a holiday for a growing share of the European population.
European tourists are leaving on holiday less anxious than they were before.
Keeping their levels of coverage seems to be encouraging them in that respect,
as is an intercontinental choice of destinations that leaves less room for any
“unpleasant surprises”.
The social media are now being invited into the planning and preparation of
summer holidays. This emerging practice already concerns one out of five
Europeans.
