Question 2: How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
My magazine being a pop music magazine is representative of
quite a young target audience who are mainly female and
between the ages of 12-16. I chose to follow the convention of
the music magazines in my case studies which both had young
female target audiences.

The audience for We Love
Pop magazine is targeted at
young girls between the
ages of 13- 16.

The average age for the core
audience (young girls) for Top
Of The Pops magazine is 12 .

The target audience for
Top Of The Pops magazine
are also teenage girls.
Through the use of an attractive young female as
the cover star of my magazine I was able to
represent and appeal to my target audience who are
similar in age to my cover star and will because of
this be more likely to purchase the magazine. This is
because they will be able to relate to her as they
have something in common which is their closeness
in age and the fact that she is female.
The way my artist is dressed also appeals to my
target audience as she is clothed in what many
teenagers would consider to be fashionable and
wear themselves. This is especially because what
she is wearing is colourful and bright which will also
appeal to girls of a young age.
In addition to this by challenging the
stereotype and using a black pop
musician as the cover star for my
magazine instead of using a white pop
musician, who are most commonly
associated with the pop genre of
music. I was also able to appeal to
young people who are of a black
ethnicity as well as young people who
are from various different ethnic
backgrounds.

Cover Star for my magazine
COLOUR SCHEME
I also think that the use of a bright colour scheme played a key part in appealing to my
particularly young target audience who are mainly female. I have used the colours pink and
orange in my colour scheme because I felt these were appropriate colours to use in order to
gain the attention of the young target audience for my magazine and these are colours I also
think that they would generally like.
In particular I used the colour pink to appeal to young girls. This is because stereotypically
speaking the colour pink is associated with females and for this reason is more likely to gain
the attention and interest of my audience. In my case studies the magazines that I have
studied also used bright colour schemes to appeal to their target audience who were of a
young age.
For the journalism of my magazine I have used simple language which I
believe will make it easier for the young audience of my magazine to
understand and therefore will appeal to them more. I also stayed away
from using informal language because I did not want to conform to the
stereotype that all teenagers and young children use informal language. I
wanted to display this by using formal language in the journalism throughout
my magazine to represent that my target audience have good intellectual
understanding.
In both my front cover and contents pages I have
mentioned the names of popular mainstream artists who
will appeal to my young target audience such as Justin
Bieber, Jessie J, Rihanna and One Direction.

Popular mainstream
artists names featured
on the front cover of my
magazine
In my contents page I have also
mentioned names of popular
mainstream pop artists .
Lastly in the journalism for my DPS I have mentioned technologies such as Twitter which I
know will appeal to the target audience of my magazine who will be familiar with the social
networking site and most probably many of them will use the site personally. Since there has
been an increasing popularity in social networking sites especially within the age bracket of my
target audience this is sure to gain their interest and appeal to them. Furthermore in the
journalism I have used for my DPS I have tried to positively represent my pop artist Aaliyah
Young so that my target audience can see her as a role model and someone that they could
look up to and be inspired by, admire and aspire to be like because of her personal
achievements and musical talent.
