A presentation conducted by Dr Rohan Wickramasuriya, SMART Infrastructure Facility, University of Wollongong. Presented on Tuesday the 1st of October 2013. Business Intelligence (BI) has popularly been adopted as a process that enables easy access, analysis and visualization of information through specialized set of tools for informed decision making. Two most noticeable characteristics of traditional BI is that it (a) is largely used in single-organization environments and (b) uses predominantly aspatial data. We believe that BI has applications beyond single-organization environments, but it very much requires integration of geospatial capabilities given the increasing availability of large volumes of spatial data and a growing interest to see things spatial. The SMART Infrastructure Dashboard (SID), our innovative solution that fuses BI and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), fills this significant gap. In this study, we demonstrate how SID can be used to perform spatio-temporal analysis and visualization of diverse sets of data to uncover complex interrelationships among utility usage, demographics and weather patterns at local and regional scale.

Rapid prototyping of new and improved products is key to Ordnance Survey being able to understand and respond to customer feedback, and create evermore innovative products. The presentation will go through a variety of products that have been created by the product development team over the last year, including Gazetteers and 3D models and explain how FME has helped to deliver them. As a taster: One product allowed customers, i.e. the emergency services, to quickly find access points to prominent places like schools, airports, etc... FME enabled us to bring many data sources togther, perform complex spatial tasks and write out to numerous data formats. Another produced 3D models for a customer to allow them to see what there data looked like in 3D space before work on a national data model was undertaken. All of these would not have been possible without the flexibility of FME and the endless possibilities that it provides.

As smart data gradually become mainline data for transportation planning, some obvious flaws in infrastructure decision making become apparent when comparing traditional static data and the dynamic nature of human travel. The static survey, a common source of transportation, encouraged to assign a greater portion of longer trips and predicting more road widening and highways. In reality, shorter trips are dominant in cities. Shared mobility options could provide options for shorter trips. These short trips should be properly corrected and assign in our infrastructure projections when travel demand modeling is developed. Smart data is paving the way to open the door of a new possibility towards shared multimodal cities.

Streamlining the design and operation of infrastructure in Wales is both an imperative issue and a challenging undertaking, particularly when responding to the climate crisis and budgetary constraints in the Welsh context. The cost of digitisation and varying levels of digital knowledge amongst professionals often impede efforts to streamline processes. ‘Going digital’ with purchases of data, systems and training can be a hurdle for many infrastructure projects, particularly for smaller ones where digitalisation capex can be prohibitively high. See a Welsh example from AtkinsRéalis that provides a workable and highly successful demonstrator of how projects can benefit from a shared GIS model, providing rapid collaboration against a design deadline of climate change.

As part of the Welsh Government’s Environment and Rural Affairs Monitoring and Modelling Programme (ERAMMP), the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH) is re-surveying soil, plants, insects, birds, water and landscape features at 300 distinct 1 km2 sample sites, dispersed across the whole of Wales. This large-scale, four-year project is being undertaken by thirty seven specialist surveyors, who use a suite of ArcGIS apps to view and capture data in the field. Learn how UKCEH has configured different ArcGIS apps to accurately monitor changes to trees and woodlands, geo-reference 4,500 soil samples and record around 1,200 plant species.
