CHAPTER 16:
SPANISH LITERATURE
DISCUSSANTS: ERWIN DG. MANZON
CLARISSA R. DE VERA
IMEE GRACE M. ECHALAS
SPAIN• The Kingdom of Spain, as it’s officially
known, is the second largest country in
the EU.
• Spain was once a number of separate
kingdoms with different languages.
• Spanish is the second most widely spoken
language in the world.
• Nudity is legal in Spain. (nude beaches)
• Spain is a constitutional monarchy.
`
DID YOU KNOW THAT…..
Spain is one of Europe's most diverse countries,
historically, culturally and geographically.
WHEN IN
SPAIN
(TOP 6 MUST VISIT PLACES IN SPAIN )
The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) of Madrid
is the official residence of the King of Spain
Protected from strong winds by steep cliffs
and islands, La Concha in San Sebastian is
said by many to be one of the best city
beaches in Europe, let alone Spain. Here
you can go surfing, walk along the
promenade in search of good restaurants
and enjoy the beautiful views of the beach.
The Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the best-preserved
monuments left by the Romans in Spain. The ancient aqueduct
carries water 16 km (10 miles) from the Frío River to Segovia
and was built of some 24,000 massive granite blocks without
the use of mortar. Probably constructed around 50 AD it still
provided water to the city in the 20th century.
Situated between Madrid and Valencia,
Cuenca is a marvelous example of a medieval
city, built on the steep sides of a mountain.
The many “hanging houses” are built right up
to the cliff edge, making Cuenca one of the
most striking towns in Spain, a gem in the
province of Castilla La Mancha.
Ibiza is one of the Balearic Islands in the
Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Spain.
The island is one of the most popular
party destinations in all of Europe. During
summer, the island’s population doubles
as tourists flock to Ibiza to enjoy the night
clubs, beach bars and restaurants.
The Sagrada Familia is a large Roman
Catholic church in Barcelona, and one
of Spain’s most visited tourist
attractions. It’s a design by Antoni
Gaudí, a Catalan architect who worked
on this project for almost 40 years until
his death in 1926. The construction of
the basilica began in 1882 and still as
yet not finished.
SPANISH LITERATURE
CID
• The oldest piece of writing that Spanish
Literature has.
• The remains of folklore and balladry handed
down by mouth and not put into writing till
many years after its composition.
• It was not until the 16th century that Spanish
Literature reached its full flowering .
SPANISH LITERATURE
• Saint Teresa (1515 – 1582)
 is an outstanding woman of all time.
Known for her writings.
A representative of the church
SPANISH LITERATURE
• Luis de Leon (1527 – 1591)
Critics call him GREATEST LYRIC POET OF SPAIN
A representative of the church
A typical Renaissance scholar
A teacher at University of Salamanca
SPANISH LITERATURE
• But the glory of the novel in the Golden Age came when
when Miguel de Cervantes(1547 – 1616) gave the
world one of his masterpieces --- Don Quixote.
• It marks the turn from the extravagances of medieval
romance to the humor and realism of everyday life.
SPANISH LITERATURE
• MIGUEL CERVANTES (1447 – 1616)
 A Spanish writer, considered by many to be the greatest Spanish author.
 His novel, Don Quixote (part 1, 1605; part 2, 1615) is regarded as one of
the masterpieces of world literature.
 Because of his eloquent style and remarkable insight, Cervantes achieved
acclaim comparable to that given to such literary greats such as the Greek
poet ---- HOMER, the Italian poet --- DANTE ALIGHIERE, and the English
playwright --- WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE.
SPANISH LITERATURE
 Don Quixote is often called the first modern novel. It is written in pecaresque
tradition, in which the hero- a picaro, or rogue – has a series of adventures as he
wanders about with a companion. Unlike the modern novel , the plot is loosely
structured. Consisting of a series of separate episodes told chronologically.
 Clearly that Don Quixote is a satire in the codes of chivalry and the style of the old
romances, which had begun to lose popularity in Cervantes’s time. But in deeper
sense , it is much more than a parody.
 It is a novel that upholds the basic human nobility that lies behind the chivalric
code, the romance style, and Don Quixote’s mad deeds.
