18. SPANISH LITERATURE
Don Quixote is often called the first modern novel. It is written in pecaresque
tradition, in which the hero- a picaro, or rogue – has a series of adventures as he
wanders about with a companion. Unlike the modern novel , the plot is loosely
structured. Consisting of a series of separate episodes told chronologically.
Clearly that Don Quixote is a satire in the codes of chivalry and the style of the old
romances, which had begun to lose popularity in Cervantes’s time. But in deeper
sense , it is much more than a parody.
It is a novel that upholds the basic human nobility that lies behind the chivalric
code, the romance style, and Don Quixote’s mad deeds.
