A vApp is a collection of VMs in VMware vCloud Director. A vApp uses the OVF standard to capture meta data about the VMs like Networking and Boot order which the virtualization layer can then implement. The OVF standard also allows you to package VMs and transport them enabling the hybrid cloud use case. In VMware vCloud Director, all VMs are vApps. Even if there is a single VM, it will be stored as a single VM vApp in VCD.
VCD provides search capabilities to locate items in the catalog. You can search by Name, description, Catalog etc.
