16. AMAZON
CONNECTIONThis initiative brought 3G broadband to the Amazon region, providing education
and healthcare to more than 30,000 people distributed in about 175 communities
along the Tapajós River.
Initiatied in the city of Belterra in 2009 with the first 3G rural sites in the Amazon,
the program continued with yearly milestones. In 2010. the Abaré Hospital boat
was also connected with 3G mobile technology. In 2011, coverage was expanded
with Suruacá 3G off-grid site, with alternative energy solutions. In 2012, Connect
to Learn was started in the Suruacá school.

The project allowed internet access via broadband Wi-Fi
and services over the cloud to the Vila Cruzeiro
community in Brazil. Within the Connect to Learn
program, 3,000 children and teenagers have access to a
21st century education.

18. CURITIBA
3G BUSES
In southern Brazil, Curitiba’s 3.2 million citizens and its Public
Transport Operators are benefiting from an electronic ticketing
and fleet management system. The city’s bus fleet serves 2.4
million passengers daily and is connected through a high-speed
mobile broadband network that provides up-to-the-second
information on a range of services.

This project marked a new milestone in this partnership in Latin
America, with a public-private partnership between the operator
and the Chilean government, collaborating in the development of
a connectivity plan that will help increase growth and reduce the
digital divide through internet connections and mobile telephony
in previously isolated zones.

20. EL PAUJI
VENEZUELA
El Pauji, an isolated indigenous community of more than 5,000
people in the Amazon region of Venezuela, had difficult access
to health care and basic needs (electricity and communication).
With this initiative, a 3G site was installed with alternative energy
solutions to provide access to distance medicine and vital signs
monitoring, with Ericsson m-health trial.
Partners: Movistar and NGO TeleSalud

A research initiative in partnership with a local university
and hospital developed an Android application that is the
starting point for a national m-health system. It currently
facilitates the work of hundreds of health agents in Sao
Paulo. The system follows the national health standards
and can be scaled nationwide to provide geo-referenced
family health data online. Before the solution, the health
agent would fill out a paper form that would take up to 60
days to be processed.
