2. THE BEGINNING: 2003
• Call of Duty is a first-person shooter video game that was developed by “Infinity Ward”
and later published by Activision. The self-titled “Call of Duty” is the very first installment
to the series and franchise; it was released on October 29 in 2003 for platforms such as
Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows, PC, Mac and many more.
3. INTRODUCTION:
• Call of Duty is one of the most, if not the most popular first-person shooter video game. It
has a very large fan base and truly set the base for many other first-person shooter
games in terms of graphics, controls, and story. Call of Duty introduced a new take on AI-
controlled allies who support the player during missions and react to situational changes
during gameplay. This led to a greater emphasis on “squad-based” play as opposed to the
"lone wolf" approach often portrayed in earlier first-person shooter games.
4. GAMEPLAY:
• Call of Duty places the player in control of an infantry soldier who makes use of various authentic firearms in combat. Each
mission features a series of objectives which are marked on the heads-up display's compass or “mini map”; the player must
complete all objectives to advance to the next mission. The player has one primary weapon slot, a secondary handgun slot
and can carry miscellaneous war essentials such and tactical weapons and lethal grenades. Weapons and ammo could also
be exchanged with those found on the battlefield dropped by dead soldiers. Call of Duty was one of the early first-person
shooters to feature iron sights in game play; by pressing the corresponding key the player aims down the actual sights on the
gun for increased accuracy.
• Call of Duty uses a standard health points system, with a limited amount of health reflected by a health bar. Med kits
scattered throughout the levels or dropped by some foes are used to restore health when the player is injured, later Call of
Duties simply added a health regenerator which slowly brought your health back to 100% over a short duration of time. Call
of Duty also featured "shellshock" meaning when there is an explosion near the player, he momentarily experiences
simulated tinnitus, appropriate sound "muffling" effects, blurred vision, and also results in the player slowing down or unable
to sprint. As the focus of the game is on simulation of the actual battlefield, the gameplay differs from many single-player
shooters of the time. The player moves in conjunction with allied soldiers rather than alone; allied soldiers will assist the
player in defeating enemy soldiers and advancing; however the player is given charge of completing certain objectives. The
game places heavy emphasis on usage of cover, suppressive fire, and grenades.
5. CAMPAIGN:
• The Call of Duty campaign, one of the greatest perks of the game itself. The story has got
to be the most original aspect to the game, it gives you the feeling you're watching a
movie that you are controlling. The levels aren't just levels where you have to go from
point A to B and shoot everything and everyone in your way. The levels are vast
scenario's in which there is always something going on and surprises await for you
around every corner. The levels are filled with great cut scene moments and surprises in
which you have to fight for your life and that of your companions. It really is one of the
great game modes within Call of Duty and they are very well created and planned out for
every game release.
6. MULTIPLAYER:
• The Call of Duty multiplayer experience is also something which really made the game
something special. With two controllers you could fight side by side with a friend within the
campaign mode; and with “live” or online access you could also take your skills to the
battlefield in various game modes such as “Team Deathmatch”, “Free for All”, “Gun Game”
and many more. The most popular game mode within the multiplayer playlist is “Team
Deathmatch” it allowed you to fight alongside 5 other teammates whom were playing
online somewhere in the world as you battled 6 other enemy hostiles who were also
playing from somewhere in the world, it’s such an amazing aspect and experience that the
game holds.
7. ZOMBIES:
• Call of Duty; Zombies was a game mode introduced to the Call of Duty series first in the
2008 release “World at War” it could be played alone or with a friend/ online and it
followed a soldier trapped within a small building fighting for his life as he kept the undead
from entering through the windows and doors sometimes even the floors. The Zombies
mode became a hit for the game and has been added to the game ever since.
8. THE FRANCHISE:
• During Activision's most recent earnings report, CEO Bobby Kotick announced that the
Call of Duty franchise has earned $11 Billion worldwide in sales since its launch in 2003.
