2.  The main idea of this PowerPoint is to show
how religion effected America, how it was
unique to America, how one would have felt
during this time of the spread of religion, how it
has changed over the years, and new
information I learned about my topic.

3. The Circuit
Riders
 The Circuit riders were a special breed of
people. They were clergy in Methodist
Episcopal churches. They rode their “circuits”
preaching and teaching settlements about God
and showing the love and forgiveness of his
grace and mercy. These riders even reached
most rural villages where no one else would
preach.

Riders
 Circuits, today called charges, are geographic
areas that contained a minimum of two
churches. Pastors circuits were assigned to
them by bishops at the Annual Conference.
Most of the time they did not keep the same
circuit or if they did it wasn’t for very long as
the maximum amount of time they could keep
it was two years. In the early days of circuit
riders they normally didn’t even get appointed
a circuit, they just went to the places that
people were settling in.

Riders
 The Job of circuit riders was simply, to spread
the Word of God to new and already set
settlements and villages. But that is not all that
they did. Circuit Riders not only encourage
congregations of settled churches, they started
churches as well. The pastor would then visit
the members of his circuits churches and
conduct the worship.

Riders End
 The end of the circuit riders had to come as
they had become extremely effective in their
preaching. And since so many areas had
become religious because of them, there was
less need to travel everywhere. So instead of
assigning pastors to large circuits, they were
appointed much smaller circuits kind of like
what we have today. Most churches have a few
pastors in them rather than 1 pastor for four
churches. There is more of a connection built
with the pastor as a leader. The end of circuit
riding is foggy but it ended some time before
the Civil war.

Circuit Riders
Circuit Riders were part of the Great awakening
because of their presence between the 2nd and
third parts of it. Because of Circuit riders, the word
of God has spread throughout the landmass of The
United States of America. These circuit riders are
responsible for the founding of a lot of churches
and the creation of new pastors who in turn
created more churches.

Great
Awakening
 The Second Great Awakening happened
between 1790 and lasted to 1820. The second
great awakening was mostly about denying the
typical, “it’s only real if I can see it” idea. The
people pushing it were all about the appeal to
the supernatural powers of God, enthusiasm
and emotion about learning more about God.

 The Second Great Awakening hosted one of the
most effective forms of preaching at the time.
These were known as revival meetings. Revival
meetings broke through geographical
boundaries such as reaching Kentucky, Ohio,
and Tennessee. Most of what protestant
American’s believed was Postmillennialism.

 Postmillennialism is the belief that God will
return to the earth after the described
millennium. This is a time of peace where there
is no bad. This gave a reason for Christians to
begin to try and purify the earth through
Christian Restorationism.

 Christian Restorationism was the support of the
restoration of the Jewish belief and presence.
The Christian Zionist believe that when the Jews
began to gather back into Israel then the
Second Coming of Christ would be on the
verge of happening. Of course this did not
happen when they wanted it to so the
movement calmed down and became more
passive in waiting for Jesus’s second return.

Awakenings
 Over all the great awaking had four different
parts. Spanning from 1790- 1980, the great
waking reached millions of people and
established a lot of churches. All four of these
movements had a huge impact on the amount
of Christians that are present today. Without
them Christianity would not have spread so
quickly and the word of God would not have
been so known throughout America.

3rd Great
Awakenings
 The 2nd and third great awakenings saw two
major forms of preaching. It saw the circuit
riders that spread the word to small villages and
settlements, places the word of God would not
have originally been heard. And they also saw
the Revival meetings which allowed for people
from all over to hear the word of God in a mass
rather than in small villages where there was
not nearly as much availability for people to
appear.

religion fit
into this time.
 During the time of this mass spreading of
religion, there was not much for people to do
or believe in. Most people did not do anything
other than work which was not a very good and
knowing that there was a God looking out for
them and Heaven to look forward to after
death, was a huge inspiration for them. This
gave hope to those who had none, made rich
men in spirit who were poor in wealth. And it
also allowed for people to believe in something
greater than the world they lived in.

Unique in
America
 The spread of religion was unique in America
due to America’s freedom of religion. You can
bet that if this spread was happening in most
anywhere else, such as England, there would be
no end in the force used to suppress it. America
was the only place with freedom of religion
where people could believe in something other
than Catholicism.

have felt
during this
time
 I think this would have been an amazing time
ton live in. Though I am blessed of knowing
about God since I was young, this
overwhelming feeling of hope these people
must have felt when they found God would
have been amazing to experience. A feeling of,
“everything from now on is taken care of”,
would have been much greater to them
because they faced much more brutal times
than I do in my cushioned life style.

changed a lot
over the years
 In today’s world though there are a lot of
Christians who are dedicated to their faith such
as those during the Great awakenings, There
are also a lot of Luke warm Christians who just
believe and do nothing beyond believe. They
still live their normal life style of sin but turn
around and say they are a Christian. Christianity
as well as most religions are more walk than
talk. On top of believing, you must show that
you believe in your actions. There is a lot of that
in todays world but there are a lot more
lukewarm Christians now than there were
before.

in society
today
 Religion plays a role in society today. On the
streets walk very many bitter people who do
not want to talk or even smile your way. When I
walk through a church, there are a lot of people
I know but even the ones I don’t know are
super excited to greet me and ask me how my
day is. Christians have much more of a kind
nature than most because of the joy God
brings.

information I
learned about
this time of
religion
 I learned that circuit riders not only spread the
gospel but were appointed by bishops to their
circuits, they lead worship, and even established
churches. I also learned that the 2nd Great
awakening was all about the brighter things of
life and denying the hard core realist who were
there to put everything happy they heard, down
in the dirt.

 In this PowerPoint we talked about how the great awakening worked and
how religion spread through this time in history. We focused on Circuit
Riders and the great awakening during the 18th century through the
1830’s.
