Determine the correct audience. Identify
your legislators and policymakers.
Write out goals, messages, and speeches in
a persuasive tone. Clearly state the issues
at hand and how they relate to the
policies.
Include personal, individual perspectives.
Share stories about the livelihood of the
community and its citizens.

5. Once you have a strong understanding of advocacy and a
strategy to use it, begin taking steps to implement your plan of
action. There are many different ways to advocate for your
cause or charity properly, so take a look at the various options
below and find what works best for you, your organization, and
your charity.

Create an advocacy program for your followers and supporters
of the cause to stay engaged long-term. Look for ways to
produce a fun, creative and compelling program of which
supporters would feel special to be included.

7. G R A S S R O O T S
This is also a form of enlisting supporters,
except it is far more short-term. Simply
create a captivating message sharing your
position on the legislation and how it
impacts the community, and share it with
your supporters. Ask them to communicate
how they feel to their government officials
and to share the information with friends and
family.

This strategy comes from an effective local advocate, Chuck
Ricks. The premise is simple. You must stand up to make a
difference. Then go to your city council (make an appointment
and arrive on time). You must show up to shed light on these
issues. Now don’t leave. Make an impression. Make the words
you use hard to forget. Follow up with your city council, provide
data and feedback, and before long, you will be a trusted,
familiar face.
