EPISODE #11: JANET TYLER JOHNSON
Intro: You‟re listening to Diamonds in Your Own Backyard. The business owner‟s guide to discovering
success, wealth, and happiness within your own business where each week you‟ll hear inspirational
stories, strategies, and inside secrets of some of the most powerful small business owners themselves,
and now here is your host Travis Lane Jenkins and Sandra Champlain.
Janet Tyler Johnson, CFP
Travis: Hey, it‟s Travis Lane Jenkins.
Sandra: And this is Sandra Champlain and we welcome you to Diamonds in Your own Backyard today.
Travis: How are you?
Sandra: Travis I am great, how about yourself.
Travis: I am wonderful. I got my normal three cups of coffee so I am excited and ready to go.
Sandra: You are.
Travis: Yes, I try to be as genuinely as possible, I know both of us get so excited about talking to our
guest that at times we start talking over each other. When I go back and listen to a lot of videos, the
way we get things set up, sometimes I just don‟t hear you or if I would, I would stop. So if it comes off
wrong I apologize. You‟ve been a very good friend, I never do that intentionally.
Sandra: And it‟s going to be worst probably today because our guest today blends two different things.
One is my strong suit, the other one is yours. So we might be fighting over her today. Can I introduce
her?
Travis: Sure, please do.
Sandra: Who we have in our show ladies and gentlemen is Janet Tyler Johnson and Janet is an author
and a speaker. She‟s a financial expert and a coach. She has been a certified Financial Planner since
1988 and have been working finances for over 30 years. She owns JATAJ Wealth Management she‟s
also the founder of powerovermoney.com. She helps entrepreneurs become financially successful so
they can live the life of their dreams. Now why I say that I will be fighting over her is because besides
her large area of expertise in the money arena, she also holds a Bachelor‟s of Science Degree in

Metaphysics she is one cool lady and I‟m really excited to have her in our show. So Janet welcome to
Diamonds in Your Own Backyard.
Travis: Yeah, welcome.
Janet: Well thank you Sandra that was very nice. Thank you.
Travis: Hey Janet before we get going can you tell us, can you break down what metaphysics is?
Janet: Oh I don‟t know if I can ever come up with a great definition of Metaphysics. You can Google it
and you will get all kinds of things. But I view it as really meta is around Physics. It‟s really the science
of spirituality if you will. When I was doing my degree work, we studied everything from metro biotic
eating, how to run a client-centred business, some information on Carl Young, we had a head course
on Caroline Mason and Dr. Wayne Dyer. So it was all across the board, everything from the power of
prayer does it really works in your life, to really taking care of your body would make a difference. So it
is the study of mind, body, spirit and how that intertwines into helping you create a better life for
yourself.
Travis: So technically it‟s an overall holistic approach to your money, mind, body and spirit at the same
time. Is that what you‟re saying with your business?
Janet: My business really blends with-- let me explain it this way. We start with the metaphysical side;
we start with what you do want out of life, what you want your life to look like. Because I have been
doing this work for so long that I really believe that oftentimes we created business thinking that
business is going to create enough money to sell while the others is in our way. And then we are a
slave to the business if you will, I know way too many people that are working way too hard and feel
stressed and feel like they are struggling when it doesn‟t really need to be that way. So I back track with
people and say wait a minute, what you want your life to look like? Where you want to live, how you
want to live, how many hours do you want to work in a week? What type of work gives you the most
passion and are you selling parts of your day doing things that are not? And then once we can get a
picture of what somebody‟s life is, what they want their life to look like then we start talking about the
money because the money can be used to support what we want. I view money as the thing that can
nurture us, it can give us option, it can give us freedom, it can give us a lot of things that we want. But
many people are very stressed around the whole idea of even dealing with the money or they are going
after the money thinking that once they have the money then the relationship they chose and then the
health issues and all the other things will get solved and it doesn‟t work that way. It is very intertwine,
your life and your money, there is no part our lives that money doesn‟t touch in some way. And yet I
know a lot of entrepreneurs that are doing really, really tremendous work and yet they are struggling on
the money side.

Travis: Right.
Janet: And so I need to dig a little deeper than just the surface of do you have a business plan, or
budget, some of this typical kind of old ways of looking at things. I say let‟s get conscious about things,
do you know what your money are doing, do you know why you are studying it the way that you are,
even old money messages what is it really growing up around money, have this huge influence the way
we handle money. That‟s often the very intentions we don‟t even know how to connect the dots, and yet
it is extremely important. I mean I just ask them a simple question to people and got them into some
huge „aha!‟ moment because they didn‟t realize that something that they had picked up somewhere
along the way whether when they are at home with their child, or when they were out around teachers
or other people that they view the authority figures, the way that they handled money influenced the
way that they are handling it today.
Travis: Right.
Janet: And just undoing some of those old messages can have the huge of fact what happens going
forward. The metaphysical part of this is really about you and are you being authentically you in what
you do for a living and what you bring out into the world. And the more that you do, I know the money
will follow, I have seen it happened over and over again. Not without the action, not by sitting in your
couch and visualizing success and never doing anything about it.
Travis: Right.
Janet: It does take action steps but it also takes a huge amount of awareness and most people today,
and I am not saying that this is your list of group at all I think there are different group of people but
most of people today are very unconscious as they go through the day to day thing that happen where
in reactive mode, we are busy, we got a lot on our plate, we got people pulling that at us all day long,
they work at home, and if there isn‟t a lot of real clarity around what people want to happen than things
can get away from you without even realizing it. Then the money and the bit kind of status, oh my god,
we got another bill to pay how are we going to get that accomplished.
Travis: Well, I meet a lot of people that there are so many different ways to go on this topic that you are
talking about. Number one, I love how you have taken a very broad industry; of managing money, and
niche it down to a very specific group. Most business owners are afraid of offending some of their
potential clients and they never take a risk, and it‟s really that not much of a risk once they get crystal
clear on who do they want to talk to. In order to resonate with the right person you do have to put off the
wrong people. Does that make sense?
Janet: Well, it is true.
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW
Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business
Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 4 of 22
Travis: Maybe it‟s an inverse way of saying it but I would rather convince 10% of the people a 100% of
the way, than a 100 of people 10% than of the way. Does that make sense?
Janet: Yes and I will tell you I went through that my own metamorphosis along those line because
there is a lot of fear for many of us that have had a traditional business in place. And now maybe we
want to offer a service or change the business in some way that better reflect who we are. In my world I
have been in this traditional male dominated left brain world in my entire career. When I started in my
business it was 25% female 75% male. Today it is 25% female 75% male.
Sandra: Wow.
Janet: Yeah. And to me it is a wonderful, wonderful profession for women because we do want to help
other people than any of us and it provides a lot of freedom and flexibility to be able to have more
balance in life to raise a child and so be able to say that you are a successful person. So I am always
grateful that women are even looking at financial planning as a profession. But you are right, first of all I
think you have to figure out who you are, I mean who is it that you really are and you cannot serve the
world.
Travis: Right.
Janet: As much as you want to, as much as we all have in us that we want to help other people really
like in the financial planning world, the best coach is out there will tell you the narrower the niche the
more successful you will be. And here is why in that industry, if I was a former airline pilot, who said I
retire most airline pilots today most of them have retired at 60 now comes and go to 65. But they are
relatively out when they retire; we see a lot of career changers in our profession. So if you are an airline
pilot and you decided you want to be a financial planner and you said my only client is going to be
airline pilot. I know what they do and I know what their pensions are like, I know what kind of health
insurance they have, I know what stressors affect their life. That is way better than saying here is what
my client look like, I serve teachers and doctors and dentist and stay at home moms, and retirees and
25 year old. Because if you do that, then you have to have a really broad range aid of knowledge,
which in our industry is not kind like being a doctor I view myself as an internet, I am not a specialist in
every area of financial planning by any mean.
Travis: Right.
Janet: So to serve a narrow niche now we have commonality, we have a vocabulary that is where we
go to a place and while everyone is still different within the niche, we cannot be a cookie cutter that kind
of approach, I still know what my clients are really, really looking for. When it comes right down to it
they want somebody that understands that their money need to support their life, that their life is

important, their families whatever their values are. They want a value discussion they don‟t want just
like the stock market discussion.
Travis: Sorry I didn‟t mean to interrupt you there, at the end of that point but you are attracting
obviously you have an affinity for metaphysics. So you are now attracting what you have an affinity for,
and you talk about that, can you talk more on that?
Janet: Well, again I think it comes down to the authenticity. So for me, it was, what are the things that I
am the most passionate about. I love helping people with money, I have my entire career, I also have a
great deal of passion around self broke and self improvement and spirituality. So when I was able to
blend those things together then my business went up the whole notch because it was like I don‟t need
to go to work if you will and just do the financial planning part of this. And then save all this other stuff
that I am passionate about for the evening in weekend. It was I am able to put all this into one container
and hopefully attract people that are also interested in those types of things. It doesn‟t matter what
those things are if I was passionate about playing golf or tennis then I would want to figure out a way to
go take my client and play golf with me in the afternoon and don‟t wait until Sunday to do that. So it‟s
the same premise it‟s just getting really clear on what are you passionate about, how you do more of
that.
Travis: Right, yeah, blending passion and business together. So it is closest possible to playing figuring
out if you are playing or getting paid to play right, in that manner of speaking.
Janet: Absolutely, absolutely. You define yourself being far away stressed out because you are
blending the stuff that you love to do. And you stop doing the things that you don‟t love to do which is
the huge thing I did I get in the way of a lot of people‟s success. I think if you spend more time figuring
out what do I love to do and then how do I do more of that, how do I get the stuff that I don‟t love to do
off my desk, I outsource more to people all over the country and they are doing test for me that needs
to be done on a daily basis but they don‟t need to be done by me.
Travis: Right.
Sandra: What kind of things Janet. I don‟t think people know the whole world of outsourcing and I am
one that if I don‟t do it no one else will do it. So it is odd sometimes to let someone else take the reins
but could you give us some example of things that are outsourceable.
Janet: Absolutely. In the financial management because I do, I am a CEO planner so I don‟t sell any
products for commissions but I do manage money for free. And there is a whole section of that
business called our back office which is daily downloading information on client‟s portfolio reconciling
that data. It is kind of balancing your check book every day, the money all accounted for and I have a
third party custodian that actually hold the money but I have a company out in Maryland that does this
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW
Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business

daily reconciliation works for me. They get the data file overnight and then in the morning when I come
in to the office I have today‟s data on my desktop. I was in the cloud before they even call that as a
cloud. When I started my own business 7 years ago, I decided from day one I want to be able to work
anytime, anywhere, any place. I wanted that kind of freedom. I did not want to be locked in an office
from 8 to 5. I didn‟t want file seating on a server that I couldn‟t get through if I am in the conference. So
because of that everything I use is web based. Well this company in Maryland is web based so I went
to a secure portal in the morning and there‟s all my client account. If I need a client, if I got a new client
on board and there is always a ton of paper work to go around on setting out account and they have
forms they have to chill out a lot of stuff I can shoot right out in a secure email and other things I can
hire a virtual planner or a virtual assistant to do. And now again you could have somebody sitting in
your office doing these things but my goal was I don‟t want anybody and my heart says because if I
want to leave and travel for a month I want to lock the door and I don‟t have to worry about it. So I have
people virtually that support me in all kinds of test and it is on as needed basis and so it close for
awhile. Then having an employee is hard to find. So I do employ people I just don‟t employ them in my
office. And it‟s really, really worth that while. My office is my sanctuary it‟s where I can come and go, I
had no interruption. Part of this team, out of a situation, prior to opening my own business I work for the
12th
Clarity Italian Firm in United States. And I am not a CPA but I was brought in to start their Financial
Planning Investment Management Division. And when I left 5 years later we had put $500 million on
their management which was a huge growth trade in our industry. We were the 2nd
fastest growing
advisory firm in United States in the 3rd
year that we were in the business. But it was fast and furious
and stressful and I travelled a lot and at one point I had 65 people reporting to me. So when I left there I
was very burned out and said I do not want to do that again. It is like any of us go down the list and
said I am not doing that again. So a lot of my wisdom has come from just being alive this far and saying
I did that I don‟t want to do it again, I am not worried at it, I didn‟t have fun. So that was the kind of
methodology I put in place to say how do I want to search my business and how can I have that
nurture me and give me energy versus drain me so that at the end of the week I am not ready to go out
and play and have fun.
Travis: Yeah you can do at the things on your own terms right?
Janet: Totally, totally on my own term. Other people I serve are my clients, they are the ones that now I
have to be therefore rather than 65 employees all over the country that some of them I did not hire, so
they were not pre hired for what we are trying to do, there is a lot of issues around that and I just said
no more, life is too short, I do not want to be stressed. All the money I guarantee you all the income in
the world does not make up for having a life that you feel depleted in, it is just there isn‟t enough money
to make up for that or working in a job that you don‟t enjoy.
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW

Travis: Yeah, or having a business or job that is squeezing the life out of you, right? I feel a lot of
people that are almost walking dead to me, they are unhappy, they are deflated, they are all of the
things that they represent all of the emotions that I tried to avoid and that these people going and doing
on a daily basis and I do not see how they do that. Now you are talking something earlier that I wanted
to get out and talk a little deeper on which is the negativity or the conversation that is going on inside in
your head that were still in as maybe I think most often as a child and as maybe as we were growing
up. And I wanted to know where this until I set an event, the millionaire mind event, 500 people in the
crowd and they have to go through a hundred word questionnaire and grade their selves 1 to 10, 1
being describes may your 0 to 10, this describes me or 10 it doesn‟t or vice versa, 0 doesn‟t fit me at
all, 10 it describes me to a T, and really it was a trick to find out how much head, trash or negative
thinking people had associated with money and it blew me away because he said how many people
scored under 10 and it was just me and one other one person in the whole audience.
Janet: Wow.
Travis: And he said, “Stand up, I said okay where is this going?” and he said, ”Are you both financially
free?” and we both said yes. And he said there is a reason why and a part of it is due to your thinking.
And almost everyone else had some type of negative attachment or thought process to money and you
said earlier that you see a lot of people that are doing great work but they are struggling financially. And
I watched it ever since I went through this exercise and I see it a lot too that people are doing great
things but they think that there is something wrong with being affluent. Can you talk more about that?
Janet: Well, I don‟t think that it is all based on and there is something wrong with being affluent but
most of this I think run very unconsciously. I believe we have an epidemic of people in this country who
do not value themselves. And I was one of those to achieve. I‟m sure I came into this place not feeling
good enough, it was not my parents fault, it was not that there is no one to blame, this is not about
blame, this is just about something inside you that says I am not good enough, I am not smart enough, I
am not something enough, I am not fool, and perfect the way that I am. And everybody listening to this,
you are perfect the way that you are right now. I am a big believer that God doesn‟t make mistakes and
he didn‟t create us imperfectly.
Travis: Right.
Janet: And when we learn to value ourselves, and love who we are everything out starts to fall into
place including the money. I really think that most people don‟t have more because they don‟t feel that
they deserve it. And so the negative messages in our head it is just our ego part of our brain convincing
us that we are right, we don‟t deserve it. I have a client a long time ago, who and everybody has
different comfort levels when it comes to money. I mean one person can save and say “I love to make a
hundred thousand dollars a year” and off he set for life, and I say, “Well if I won a lottery and won a
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW
Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business

hundred million it wouldn‟t take me that long to spend it.” And people look at me like I am nuts and say,
“Come on, you can buy yacht, you can buy three mansion, you can go buy an island in your yacht.”
Most of us haven‟t been exposed to a lot of wealth and yet at the same time we did hear messages that
oh my god, look at those people that‟s outrageous, who would want to drive a car like that, my god, so
it‟s all these real stuffs—so I am going to ask everybody a question. This is one way that you can find
out what your money messages are. I want to ask you to think about “What was your very first memory
of money?” I want you to write that down. What is my first memory of money because if you can
remember something that impacted you, it doesn‟t matter if you were 3 years old or you were 18 years
old? But then the very first memory around money can be amazing to tell you what you are caring
around inside you about money. Some of the truth of this in church that we heard messages around
money that those were not positive in church. There are also a whole group of people even in our
industry that I think kind of have the Mother Theresa syndrome although that is kind of unusual but we
talk about it that way. They are thinking in order to be a good person that you don‟t want the trappings
of life if you will. Well I will tell you what, Mother Theresa was one of the best manifestoes of money
that ever had in this planet. She just didn‟t spend it on herself. But if she wanted to build money for the
orphanage or new hospital she got it in no time. So it is okay I mean my goal in life is to be
outrageously wealthy and outrageously grounded and secure and happy all of the same time.
Travis: Right.
Sandra: Yeah, I like that.
Janet: Yeah, I am starting to get there. Because I really don‟t think there is anything wrong with having
money. I think the more money you have the more good you can do in the world, anything from during
illnesses to supporting any charity that you have the desire to support. So we talk ourselves out of
through that negative mindset not consciously. I take people through exercises where I ask them to pay
attention to what they are thinking, and then if they catch themselves, this is the trick you got to learn to
catch yourself thinking a thought or saying a word if something stumbles out of your mouth it is kind of
like for those of you that are moms you always vowed that boy when I have my kids I am never going to
do what my mother did, sounds like my mother, then the first time your child does something look at
your mom‟s words that comes out in your mouth. Well it‟s the same happens to money, if you can pay
attention to what you are thinking and saying around money and then going like in an observer saying
wait a second, is what I said really true? Is that really true?
Travis: Right.
Janet: Going to a wealthy, really, really wealthy neighbourhood, drive through here and see what stuffs
comes out. See how you feel because if you are not there yet there is a reason you are not there yet.
And it does have I think it has everything to do with how you are thinking. Everywhere we sell sabotage
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW

and that‟s not conscious that can be very unconscious, and why we are not attracting more ideal
clients, why are we not believing in ourselves no matter what anybody else says about us. I love Dr.
Wayne Dyer I have read almost everything he has ever written. He talks a lot about this because if you
can change the way you think, you can change your entire life. And I think it starts with how you feel
about yourself. You talk to yourself worst than you would ever talk to another human being on the
planet.
Travis: Right.
Janet: If we change that, we change everything.
Travis: Yes, Sandra and I have come to those conversations a lot.
Janet: Yeah, yeah.
Travis: And it is incredible than negative things that you let that little voice say to you.
Janet: And I think the reason I mean through all of my studies and life experience, everybody comes
from one up to places either love or fear. Those are really the two things that drive us. Even if you are
angry of something, underneath that anger is a fear of something.
Travis: Right.
Janet: And people talk about fear of failure, fear of success, well it can be more basic than that but if
you can get to those fear, I think we are afraid of our power, I really think people are afraid more of
success than the failure. Because we all know of some level that failure doesn‟t mean death most of
the time, we can make it feel that way. But if we try something new in the business and we fail, well
that‟s how you learn. You don‟t learn from your success you learn from your failures. But the power that
we have inside of us to really affect other people and to create magnificent things, we all have that we
are born with it. We may not think we have it, we may not think we are created individuals, but we are
hugely created. So it is that being willing to play a little bit with that power and uniquely. One thing that
the school do not teach is to celebrate the fact that you are different. Whatever you are, celebrate that.
Don‟t try to conform, don‟t go after people‟s approval. Figure out what is unique about you. What makes
you excited to get out of the bed in the morning? And then the negative thoughts start to go away
because you are just changing the way you are using. It is something like where I know I am a
procrastinator. And I can be that myself all day long, and say I just wish I could stop procrastinating.
That is the reason I am not succeeding. What if you turn to the route and said you know what
procrastination sometimes just kept me from making some really stupid mistakes. Because if I had just
build in and nap about it, I might go into a direction that will cost me even more money. So everything
that we view as a negative can be a strength. But we are taught from the time we are little to sit in,
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW
Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business

conform, play by the role, not just create, not to try new things, not to be afraid of sailing. Most of us
haven‟t had that experience.
Travis: Right. Sit down, be quite, don‟t make a fool of yourself, stand in line, listen all of the things. I
watched the great piece on the Chinese, it‟s about china and they were talking about one of the
problems they felt, this is from their perspective, is that their culture trains creativity out of them. Of
course everyone wants you to fall in line here but there there‟s very harsh penalty if you do not fall in
line.
Janet: That‟s right.
Travis: So they spoke with a lot of young people that were at the high school or college level, I think it
was called the china effect. They said by the time we get to college they have successfully trained
every ounce of creativity out of us.
Janet: Yup, yup.
Travis: And they are afraid to color outside of the lines. I have talked about this on several episodes for
years I was embarrassed I was such a terrible student and even a little bit troublemaker too. As I
continued my education of growing to know myself better and just becoming a better person I realized
that was the leader and creative nature in me that calls me to push button that I wouldn‟t supposed to
and go places where I would supposed to actually that was the leadership in me. And that is what you
are talking about here, right?
Janet: Absolutely, absolutely yes. Really forget about what our family taught us, can you give in a place
where you can say who am I, what am I doing here, why do I do the things that I do, and what do I love
to do which I think really fuel that passion to not follow the herd and the luxury of having a business
that supports all that. Believe it or not the more pieces of the puzzle you put together the more
financially successful you become because you can‟t help it. Most people, I work with a number of
people, many, many people that have extremely high wealth. And they got the money as the by
product in the things they love to do. Bill gates did not say my goal is to be the richest man on the
planet; my goal is to put computer in everybody‟s home.
Travis: Right.
Janet: So it is not just the money that is important but the reason I created this business called power
over money because we have given away our power when it comes to money, we have given money
more power when it should have, we have given a belief systems that it is not real. The bottom line is
money is just money. It is just a really mutual thing that we decide while it is the measure of success.
Some people believe that but that‟s a belief that‟s not the truth. For other people the idea of success is
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW
Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business

to say, I want to have a great family life and healthy children and I want to have a lot peace, I need
money to survive but I don‟t need all the wealth in the world. I mean we all get to define what we want
our lives to look like. That‟s the beauty of being in this country is that we can decide to do whatever we
want to do, you have to believe in yourself, you have to believe in what you are doing, you have not to
worry of what other people think you are not or if they don‟t approve on it. I mean I went a lot, I am
saying this to my experience, for one time my dad said to me, Janet if you do this not the physical stuff,
if you start talking about that to your clients you are going to lose your clients. And I thought long and
hard about it and I kept falling back to the same thing that was the fear that was just the fear okay. And
the only way that I could figure out to negate the fear was to just go do it and see what happens. And I
kept thinking what is the worst thing that can happen here, if I do lose clients, well guess what I might
attract even better clients. And you know what a year ago was when I started this process, I haven‟t
watched any client.
Travis: Which even attracted more ideal clients, right?
Janet: I attracted the best client I ever had and she found me on a Google search, she was been to a
different state. I don‟t market anymore, I don‟t spend any money on marketing, I think it‟s the waste of
time, I put together on blog, I write about things that I think can help people and share information and
hopefully the right people will resonate with what I am all about. And I am certainly not trying to
convince the masses to come work with me. I want to have people that are like minded because they
are the most fun, they are the most trusting, they get it, if we do have a common vocabulary it doesn‟t
matter what your business is all about, how do you define who your ideal client is, and then what things
can you do in that business to attract those ideal clients to you.
Travis: Right.
Janet: For some types of businesses it may take the marketing but you know what the internet is the
biggest marketing device we have and it‟s amazing to me that people that are finding me. I put a
Facebook page up for power over money and I am getting people all over the world that are liking that
page. And I am not putting a ton of effort into this at. And I am like, wow this is amazing to me, it‟s
amazing to me.
Travis: Right. Hey Janet, what do you feel like, so I‟m the baby I am the number three of three kids in
the family, where do you feel like that formula play in the voice, because the voice said my head is very
different than the voice that talks to my oldest sister. And so do you feel like that has a role in setting
the stage for that.
Janet: Birth order?
Travis: Yeah, birth order.

Janet: I don‟t, for the lot of stuck in it, here‟s what I do for the lot of stuck in, I think we come into this
life with a set of circumstances that we are suppose to learn from here while we are here on earth. I
don‟t believe that this is the only time that we are incarnated, I do believe in reincarnation so I think we
come here to learn things to continue to the vow spiritually. Because of that I think we come in with an
agreed upon like me well this time I think I need to really work on my self esteem.
Travis: Right.
Janet: So I came in and set up a whole bunch of circumstances that would play into that womb if you
will that I did not have a lot of self esteem when I was born. In fact, if you look at my mom had checked
baby book for us and mine, I was the oldest and mine says sensitive, sensitive, sensitive. I cried until
the drop of the head, I was very insecure even as a little child. So my parents, me and three kids we
are all different in the family. I don‟t think it had a lot of bearing on who was born first, second or third as
much as who decided, who was the most wounded that kind of a thing when we came in. I had a
wonderful childhood, wonderful upbringing, support of family, my parents were terrific at whatever we
guys want to do and you think you are capable of. But my brothers, sisters and I all look like we come
from different family, we are totally different. So I can‟t blame so much in order I think it has to do with
those wounds and until those wounds are healed. And Oprah talks about this a lot, that God kind of
forgive your ear then hear something you need to pay attention to and if you don‟t pay attention to it like
dating that first person that you dated, and then they are not really right for you but you kind of attracted
by your wound. All we both come from divorce family and we both are the oldest to bring and I hear this
people gravitating to each other and they are like oil and water. And they get married and the marriage
doesn‟t work and then what do they do they come out of that and they go right down the path and marry
somebody else that very similar, different name, different occupation, but with the same person. I did
that over and over in my life until I finally figured it out what it is about me that keep attracting this
people. Well it was the wound in me that treasures I am good enough to attract anybody better I mean
basically, for until the wound to get healed you keep doing that and you have to realize in every area of
your life, if it‟s the way you handle money, your relationships, or whatever, what is it about me that is
setting up those circumstances and then when you are thinking is different the circumstances become
different. When you start to feel more worthy, then you attract better friendship, better job, better clients,
better everything because you feel more deserving. I think that is the basis of a lot of this for a lot of
people, and for most of us it is so unconsciously going it all there, you don‟t even know it‟s there, you
really don‟t know that we are not healing good enough. But if you insist all day long beating yourself up
over stuff that you would never say to your best friend. When are you going to become your best
friend? When are you going to be good to you?
Travis: So how old were you, at what phase in your life did this hit you. When did you find this clarity?

Janet: I am 57 now, and I think I hit my own little rock bottom if you will when I was about 42. I have
already started exploring some things on the spiritual path, my issue was relationship, I didn‟t really
have a lot of business issue, but I can be seeing this guy over and over and over again and it‟s finally
dawn on me, I didn‟t think at it first during that and of course it is easy to blame the guy. It was always
the guy who is asked why we broke up but one day I was like at the tiffany when I said, oh my god, they
are all the same guy, they just have different name, different stuff, but they were all emotionally needy,
financially needy, because I solely I was quote and quote better than them they won‟t going to leave
me. And then once I figured it out it was me, I‟m like oh my god, and so then I started the kind of, my
therapist is bound to noble. I was once in the bookstore started reading and learning everything I could
learn. Found multiple different people that were in the healing profession that could help me. Because I
don‟t think we can always do it on our own. And then once I started to heal the thoughts started to
change and I felt better about who I was, and oh my god, there was just whole other woman out there; I
didn‟t even want to participate it before. Some of this lack of self worth for a lot of us place and entered
a low level of depression, we don‟t have a lot of energy, we can‟t live a vital, exciting life when we are
not feeling good about who we are, because we just don‟t frankly want to participate all that much.
Travis: Kind of hopelessness or something.
Janet: I don‟t even think you can articulate it when you are in it, and I don‟t think you know you are in it
until you get out of it, I don‟t think you have any idea how good good can be until you there. My life just
gets better and better every single day, every single day.
Sandra: I like that, I love that.
Janet: Yeah, it comes from wanting it, the big part of it is I think I just hit that wall, or I said I don‟t want
to do this anymore. There‟s got to be better than that, there‟s got to be.
Sandra: Can I share with you guys something that I came up with being about money being on this
show?
Janet: Yes.
Sandra: My dad was an airline pilot, I think that‟s when you said an airline pilot, for American airline
and he was in the top # 1% of income but we never knew that growing up I literally taught we are in
poverty because anything we want as a kid we have to work for, anything. And so I grew up with the
message that the only way to have money is to work really, really hard. And so that become something
that what I do for work because I work something really, really hard. And that‟s been a reality for me,
and I have never known people that really wealthier didn‟t know them close. So when I met Travis a
year ago, he shared just a real heartfelt story of bankruptcy to many millions. And I thought and I am
looking at him like but he seems normal. People are different, I couldn‟t be that and I think meeting
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW

Travis is the first time like that, I thought that this guy is no different than me. And so I started even
though I have been through a lot of work on myself and stuff I mean there‟s still conversation there in
the area of money. I think your conversation is really great today Janet because so many of us
business owners feel like we have our dreams, we have our desires, we have the things we love to do
but we can‟t do them until we work really, really hard, and we get the money so the money will give us
the time and then the time will give us the freedom to be able to do the things we love. So you are
totally on a 180 on this it‟s like no, figure out the things you love first and through those passion and it‟s
no coincidence that our show is called Diamonds in your own Backyard and that really is finding your
diamonds within your passion within in order to have the success you want. So I really want to
acknowledge and thank you for bringing that conversation to the forefront today.
Janet: Well, thank you yeah. And that‟s... me to coach other people because sometimes we don‟t ask
our self the question like what is the first memory of money or what if you had a hundred million dollars
sitting in the bank right now, what would you change in your life? What would you do differently? Most
people don‟t even say them really winning the lottery, and most lottery winners are broke and then
worst shape three years after they win the money than before they won it. And it has everything to do
with not feeling worthy or believing that they didn‟t work hard to get it. You will be trust funded, the
money was handed down and they didn‟t do a thing to earn it. What were they doing, not all of them, a
lot of them are on drug problems, have drug problems, alcohol problems, and we have to get ourselves
ready inside to be able to handle the money on the outside and it is a reflection. You go hand in hand,
so even if you get that really big client and deep down inside you say I didn‟t work hard on that you will
find a way to sabotage that relationship and you won‟t do it consciously. So I ask people to start
observing themselves, be your own coach, look at what you are saying, what are you doing, how you
handle money, do you know what you are spending, do you know where your money is going every
dime of it, do you know what you spend on Christmas last year, do you know what you spend on
clothing, do you know what you spend on birthday presents every year? And this is not a judgment
issue; this is not about going through this and beating yourself up over where your money is going. It is
saying I am going to bring this all into the light because you know what if I really get conscious and
aware around what I do with my money, I am going to learn something. It is the same as late last year,
if you want to lose weight what is the first thing they ask you to do, start tracking what you eat. Be
honest with yourself. Same thing on the money side, I think the universe supports you with your good
store of your money and that means using your money to support what is important to you. You don‟t
have anybody including a financial planner and say well, here‟s what you really are doing with your
money. That‟s not a good financial planner does. A good financial planner says, okay you want go on
vacation this year, do you realize that your spending is showing me that you are spending that money
at Starbucks everyday or whatever it may be? I was a big book buyer. So I could easily say well yeah I
will go on through at least $60 a month to Barnes and Nobles that‟s $600 a year. Change your
spending and put it into an annual number because that‟s when it gets the enlightening. I help people
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW
Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business

quit smoking over this; you realize what you spend in a year on cigarette. It doesn‟t matter what you
spend in a week that‟s a little number. What do you spend and all this different thing in a year and then
you get to decide, you get to take your power back and say you know what, I would rather go on
vacation, I drink my coffee from home. That‟s the conscious decision, that‟s about power but not
unconsciously driving to Starbucks or wherever every morning and then saying for me, I don‟t even
have enough money to go on vacation. I do this with my business, I go through this every time and all
the time, I mean and then in this stage I will be spending a lot of money on things that I thought I need it
and then a year later I went you know, why am I doing that? It‟s not returning anything to me so little by
little I started cutting out this service, cutting out that because that money was just unconsciously going
out the window sometimes. So it‟s later we all exist, we need it, just like me, even though ... I still say,
oh my gosh, there is another area I wasn‟t even thinking about that. Let‟s get conscious about that, and
we do have the power, you don‟t need somebody to tell you how you handle your money. You know
how to do it, you got all the answers inside you, but you got to be willing to have the courage and to
bring it all out into the forefront and examine it and not being denial around it.
Travis: Yeah, to clarity issue just get crystal clear on what the compounding effect that your actions
are. And I do the same thing when I go in and do analysis in the business, I break down the pricing
model and most people and it surprises me, because people that have run a business for 20, 30 years
once I break down their pricing modes and I show them their expenses and then their gross profit and
then I show them what happens when I get discount 10% after that, most people are floored. That they
are basically giving away the entire profit most often than not.
Janet: Right.
Travis: They are giving away the entire profit and the reason more often than not. They‟re giving the
entire profit and the reason why this happens because so many businesses are so busy being busy,
making sure the things are being handled on a microscopic scale, running in 50 different direction but
they never step back and look at things from a distance and get a full big picture of what is going on,
right?
Janet: That‟s right. I think it doesn‟t have to be a big argue of things, it can be very fun, I damp all my
transactions into there and then I go and run my report and say, wow I didn‟t realize on an annual
basis, this is just what is costing me. And at the same time you have to have clarity about what it is you
want, because when we aren‟t really clear about what we want in life, where we‟re headed, what our
dreams are, what we really, really, really want, what is important for us, then it is so easy to go spend
the money than spend on the hole that we have because we are on the path to get what we want or we
don‟t know what we want.
Travis: Right.
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW

Janet: Again it goes back to spiritual you want in your life, are you using the money in a way that
supporting the vision that you have in your life? And you need to do it personally and in the business
and you need to do it all the time. I look at Oprah because I heard her say one time that in all the years
that she had her TV show, she handled her money, she paid the bills, or she authorized the payment of
the bill, she knew where her money was going. She is never going to be one of the stories that you
hear that somebody embezzled extra money dollars on her, because she paid attention, because she
was conscious about it. And that makes all the difference in the world and it makes you feel like you do
have power. When you can say, you know what we need an entrepreneur, let me look at, let me really
make a good decision. How many copies are we making in a month, how much paper do we buy? Let
me make sure I understand this thing so that I can get something that‟s going to be good, smart
purchase here. You don‟t have to be an accountant at all to understand any of this stuff; it is just a
simple math and being willing to look at it. It can change your life and it‟s little tiny thing to make a huge
difference. It‟s all of the tweaking, it‟s not usually some big overriding problem that you have that you
didn‟t know you have, it is usually something that you said Travis where 10% can make the difference
between profitable and not profitable.
Travis: Right.
Janet: And it‟s all that kind of stuff, that diligence, that willingness to just look at things and get them
out into the open. And then again and again, again and again, and you keep getting a little bit more
clarity, and more clarity. With this expenditure supporting what I want to do, what I am passionate
about, or is it just money that I am spending because I wasn‟t busy that day and look like a good
purchase. And to me, it was life changing, it was totally life changing. I gave up a huge income when I
left corporate in America, I was making 25% of what I made at the accounting firm when I started my
own business. And I was fortunate that my husband also had a job so he had all the benefit so I did not
worry about that. I am now making more than when I was at the accounting firm. My business has
grown by 70% a year an average for the last 7 years in a row. And that is all through of intention that is
all through clarity and believe me I don‟t work hard for this, I just do it. And I had a lot of fun doing all
the stuff I love to do. Even though if I am a financial planner, numbers is not my thing. I am not an
engineer that wants to look at pages and pages in spreadsheet, I want a bottom line and I want to know
I am going on the right direction here. But we all can do that, it is really all about getting clear of what
you want and paying attention to this old money messages. Like you said Sandra, when you think that
you need to work hard in order to make more money, I can prove to you that is not true.
Travis: Right.
Janet: I am making more than a hundred thousand dollars a week, and I don‟t put in more than 35
hours a week.
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW

Travis: Actually the farther you get away from physical work that normally the more money you make. I
have been mentoring her and her business and she is regularly drawing this high level of incredible
pain, effort, and everything out on our self. And it is just a mindset that she has got to hold and get
permission to not do that and we talk a lot about becoming the leader of the orchestra, rather than
playing in the orchestra.
Janet: Yeah.
Travis: Because she gets so caught up doing the heavy movie things because she can‟t and she wants
to help but it was not just the right move for her.
Sandra: You got to get, I am just saying it so clearly that Travis came into my life just when I needed
them. And now „Wala‟ here is Janet, there is no, I have had the intention and may not be an overnight
kind of thing but this just happens. But I think the more we hear a message, and the more people we
made, and the more people we have in our life that are successful in it, that belief system that I don‟t
matter or not good enough that can really be what it takes to turn it around and say, hey I am no
different than this two, or this three, or this four.
Travis: Right.
Sandra: So who you hang around with, so Janet thanks, thank you just personally for this conversation
today because it really made a difference for me.
Janet: Well, I am really glad and that‟s all you have to do is you are willing to help one person and then
there is a plan and we all learn from each other, I am not done learning. I mean I intend to be a student
for the rest of my life because everyone you run into; when you start living from the metaphysical
perspective there are no accidents. Everybody unique and talk to there‟s a reason behind it, that‟s part
of a bigger plan. And when you get in that slow in paying attention to what cool things that can happen
today that can really help me out. It starts with clarity and having the desire to go after what is it that
you are excited about in life, whatever that is. Everything else will then come to you, that is why I don‟t
spend money on marketing. I really do believe that I am attracting the right people to me. Whether it‟s
through referrals from existing client who is happy, who happens to tell their friends or if something that
I wrote on my blog, and somebody found it and said I need to learn more, I need to talk to her. It all will
happen and some of it does not happen overnight, sometimes we get a little frustrated with that, that‟s
really kind of again that‟s our own little negativity, gosh we are not yet anywhere, blah blah blah, look at
the things that you are good at, look at the things that you accomplished, those are the other things I
want to mention, when you were talking earlier Travis many, many business owners are really good at
a lot of things. But that does not mean you need to be doing them all yourself. I have been to
accounting firm for 10 years, and I will tell you most accountants are the worst delegators in the world,
THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW

they really will have to control everything and nobody can do it better than me. And here I am talking to
a partner in a firm who has been in hardest season he ever had. And I said you know what something
is wrong because you should not be working that way. So we have to go back and look at ourselves
and say, this is isn‟t about control it is about surrender. It is letting other people do the things that you
are not excited about, imagine if your business only have people in it that loves to do what they are
doing.
Travis: Right.
Janet: If I hire an assistant tomorrow, it would be I want somebody who do not like me; I want
somebody who is going to love to do all the stuff that I do not love to do. And it is all that done in this
fun exciting life.
Travis: And you get to be excited every morning.
Janet: Everyday, if you are not excited to go to work everyday then you got to figure out why, well I
don‟t have the money coming in so I cannot hire a help, that‟s okay. But you know what in any local
college there are kids who would work for free to get experience in your line of work. You just need to
go look for them.
Travis: Hey Janet, if our listeners want to know more about you and have a conversation with you, how
would they find you?
Janet: Well, I am more than happy to give out email address and phone number, they can certainly go
to my blog, the main business is jataj.com, which is just Janet Tyler Johnson, my initial capital A is
thrown in, so that‟s where money and metaphysics meet, that‟s the main blog. And then power over
money which is really dedicated to entrepreneurs who are serving others, it‟s simply
powerovermoney.com. My phone number is 608-219-0113 and email address is jtjohnson@jataj.com.
Travis: What stage of entrepreneur do you like to work with, what stage business, what level?
Janet: It isn‟t so much of the stage of the business, I think it is the level of the frustration. Because
whether you are new, starting out or you been in the business for 30 years it is never, ever too late to
get this kind of clarity. So my ideal client is someone who wants to really get clear about what they want
in their lifetime and tailor makes that business to support that life.
Travis: Okay.
Janet: It doesn‟t matter what kind of business you are in, but you have to be at that stage in your life
where you say you know what something has got to change, and then you are ready for coach, and
then you are ready to do what it‟s going to take on the inside which many people stood out there that

it‟s a lot of hard work, I don‟t think it‟s a hard work at all. I think it‟s a lot of fun, it‟s a lot of inspiration, it‟s
like you said oh my gosh that‟s one question, what an „aha‟ moment. And now you just ask yourself with
that belief you have with working hard is true, and you say of course not I know all kinds of wealthy
people that are not working hard. Why do I believe that all my life, you just throw that out, you don‟t
judge yourself, you don‟t beat yourself up, you say you know what, that is not serving me anymore, I
am going to get rid of that and I am going to say, hmm what can I get done in 30 hours a week instead
of 40, or 70 instead of 100, whatever it is. And take daily steps and do it. So this isn‟t hard work, it‟s just
things that I believe it‟s just never been taught.
Travis: I agree, I agree with you. Janet, you have been an excellent guest we appreciate your taking
out the time of your day and spending it with us and sharing your incredible vast knowledge of business
and all the things that you have learned over several years, Sandra do you want to add anything before
I wrap things up?
Sandra: Well, just a big thank you, I think there are many of us listening today that you have just really
impacted and give us a new perspective on how to look at work, passion, money and to actually come
from your passions to have it all. I want to thank you for that new perspective and just really for your
time and being part of us today. Thanks.
Janet: You‟re welcome and I am really, really grateful to both of you because I think you can tell from
the way I am talking I am so passionate that other people don‟t have to keep struggling. The world
needs what people are putting out there, it needs that more today than ever, and if we can help each
other all be better, it makes us huge difference in people‟s lives. So if I can help even one person, just
struggle little less, be more successful more quickly, and enjoy what they do every day, what‟s better
than that?
Sandra: Not much.
Janet: Not much. I mean that‟s why I say in my life, I am 57 today, I have no, no eye on retirement. I
don‟t want to stop on what I am doing it just absolutely a blessing, I feel grateful and then gratitude I
think place into this a lot to my own success. I am so grateful for all of the people that have helped me
along the way and having the courage sometimes to ask for help, for a long time I didn‟t, I tried I was
really giving in and that it was a sign of weakness to ask somebody else help me but not anymore.
Travis: I second that Janet. I second it, great job.
Sandra: And I third it. You let people contribute and we all know how good it feels to give and so if you
don‟t love somebody to contribute, it‟s good so sometimes we need that.

Janet: Yes, and we need to learn how to receive too because many of us really got to giving thing
down path, but we have to be worthy of receiving, we have to feel that we are worthy of that, and that
was something I really had to work on for the last few years, we can give and give and give to we have
not much to give and that is not the right way to do it.
Travis: Right.
Janet: You have to be willing to give in the flow of nature, and part of that is receiving the rewards for
the gift that you have given for others. So thank you so much both of you for this opportunity and for the
business that you are building, you are doing great work in the world, I am really, really thrilled that you
are gracious enough to allow me to be here today.
End of Interview
Travis: Oh, not a problem. I am looking forward to meeting you at AIA export industry if you decide to
attend this year. I want to get on myself back to one quick second. So people get coaches for zumba
dancing, people get coaches for working out, people get nutrition coaches, they get Spanish coaches,
they get all these different types of coaches. But no one is getting a coach for their business. That is
crazy. I want you to take in the consideration of what Janet is talking about. Get yourself a coach in
your business, now I can guarantee, Janet doesn‟t care, I don‟t care if you choose me, her, anyone, but
it‟s very, it‟s impossible to see the true aspects of what‟s going on in your business. When you‟re
depend on it and so when you get in outside person that comes in and start asking questions and
wants to get on to the bottom of what‟s going on, you are going to be in a position to make an incredible
change in your business, that will impact your life, your ability to give, and everybody in your circle of
influence. So think about it, take some time, set aside some time and money to find a coach that fits
with you and your belief system and have it coming and take a look at your business. I promise you it
will make a huge difference in your business. And for the listeners that have found us on iTunes, we
have several communications with you guys, we appreciate that. I would like to remind you every show
that we are on travisandsandra.com and we are on Facebook also. And if you go to

point. That once you enter your information, name, email, what will start doing is automating or sending

We'll do this by performing a S.W.O.T. Analysis. This tells us your Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities and Threats within your business.
This will be an eye opener for YOU, for several reasons, however some of the most common reasons
are.
As the 'Business Owner' it‟s difficult to see the big picture of your own business because you‟re in the
middle of a daily management.
And you are too emotionally involved to completely impartial.
This is a common problem for EVERY business owner. It doesn‟t matter if you are a one-man army, or
an army of 150, the problem is still the same.

The Entrepreneurs Radio Show 011 janet tyler johnson

  • 1. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 1 of 22 EPISODE #11: JANET TYLER JOHNSON Intro: You‟re listening to Diamonds in Your Own Backyard. The business owner‟s guide to discovering success, wealth, and happiness within your own business where each week you‟ll hear inspirational stories, strategies, and inside secrets of some of the most powerful small business owners themselves, and now here is your host Travis Lane Jenkins and Sandra Champlain. Janet Tyler Johnson, CFP Travis: Hey, it‟s Travis Lane Jenkins. Travis: Yes, I try to be as genuinely as possible, I know both of us get so excited about talking to our guest that at times we start talking over each other. When I go back and listen to a lot of videos, the way we get things set up, sometimes I just don‟t hear you or if I would, I would stop. So if it comes off wrong I apologize. You‟ve been a very good friend, I never do that intentionally. Sandra: And it‟s going to be worst probably today because our guest today blends two different things. One is my strong suit, the other one is yours. So we might be fighting over her today. Can I introduce her? Travis: Sure, please do. Sandra: Who we have in our show ladies and gentlemen is Janet Tyler Johnson and Janet is an author and a speaker. She‟s a financial expert and a coach. She has been a certified Financial Planner since 1988 and have been working finances for over 30 years. She owns JATAJ Wealth Management she‟s also the founder of powerovermoney.com. She helps entrepreneurs become financially successful so they can live the life of their dreams. Now why I say that I will be fighting over her is because besides her large area of expertise in the money arena, she also holds a Bachelor‟s of Science Degree in
  • 2. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 2 of 22 Metaphysics she is one cool lady and I‟m really excited to have her in our show. So Janet welcome to Diamonds in Your Own Backyard. You can Google it and you will get all kinds of things. But I view it as really meta is around Physics. It‟s really the science of spirituality if you will. When I was doing my degree work, we studied everything from metro biotic eating, how to run a client-centred business, some information on Carl Young, we had a head course on Caroline Mason and Dr. Wayne Dyer. So it was all across the board, everything from the power of prayer does it really works in your life, to really taking care of your body would make a difference. So it is the study of mind, body, spirit and how that intertwines into helping you create a better life for yourself. Travis: So technically it‟s an overall holistic approach to your money, mind, body and spirit at the same time. Is that what you‟re saying with your business? Janet: My business really blends with-- let me explain it this way. We start with the metaphysical side; we start with what you do want out of life, what you want your life to look like. Because I have been doing this work for so long that I really believe that oftentimes we created business thinking that business is going to create enough money to sell while the others is in our way. And then we are a slave to the business if you will, I know way too many people that are working way too hard and feel stressed and feel like they are struggling when it doesn‟t really need to be that way. So I back track with people and say wait a minute, what you want your life to look like? Where you want to live, how you want to live, how many hours do you want to work in a week? What type of work gives you the most passion and are you selling parts of your day doing things that are not? And then once we can get a picture of what somebody‟s life is, what they want their life to look like then we start talking about the money because the money can be used to support what we want. I view money as the thing that can nurture us, it can give us option, it can give us freedom, it can give us a lot of things that we want. But many people are very stressed around the whole idea of even dealing with the money or they are going after the money thinking that once they have the money then the relationship they chose and then the health issues and all the other things will get solved and it doesn‟t work that way. It is very intertwine, your life and your money, there is no part our lives that money doesn‟t touch in some way. And yet I know a lot of entrepreneurs that are doing really, really tremendous work and yet they are struggling on the money side.
  • 3. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 3 of 22 Travis: Right. Janet: And so I need to dig a little deeper than just the surface of do you have a business plan, or budget, some of this typical kind of old ways of looking at things. I say let‟s get conscious about things, do you know what your money are doing, do you know why you are studying it the way that you are, even old money messages what is it really growing up around money, have this huge influence the way we handle money. That‟s often the very intentions we don‟t even know how to connect the dots, and yet it is extremely important. I mean I just ask them a simple question to people and got them into some huge „aha!‟ moment because they didn‟t realize that something that they had picked up somewhere along the way whether when they are at home with their child, or when they were out around teachers or other people that they view the authority figures, the way that they handled money influenced the way that they are handling it today. Travis: Right. Janet: And just undoing some of those old messages can have the huge of fact what happens going forward. The metaphysical part of this is really about you and are you being authentically you in what you do for a living and what you bring out into the world. And the more that you do, I know the money will follow, I have seen it happened over and over again. Not without the action, not by sitting in your couch and visualizing success and never doing anything about it. Travis: Right. Janet: It does take action steps but it also takes a huge amount of awareness and most people today, and I am not saying that this is your list of group at all I think there are different group of people but most of people today are very unconscious as they go through the day to day thing that happen where in reactive mode, we are busy, we got a lot on our plate, we got people pulling that at us all day long, they work at home, and if there isn‟t a lot of real clarity around what people want to happen than things can get away from you without even realizing it. Then the money and the bit kind of status, oh my god, we got another bill to pay how are we going to get that accomplished. Travis: Well, I meet a lot of people that there are so many different ways to go on this topic that you are talking about. Number one, I love how you have taken a very broad industry; of managing money, and niche it down to a very specific group. Most business owners are afraid of offending some of their potential clients and they never take a risk, and it‟s really that not much of a risk once they get crystal clear on who do they want to talk to. In order to resonate with the right person you do have to put off the wrong people. Does that make sense? Janet: Well, it is true.
  • 4. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 4 of 22 Travis: Maybe it‟s an inverse way of saying it but I would rather convince 10% of the people a 100% of the way, than a 100 of people 10% than of the way. Does that make sense? Janet: Yes and I will tell you I went through that my own metamorphosis along those line because there is a lot of fear for many of us that have had a traditional business in place. And now maybe we want to offer a service or change the business in some way that better reflect who we are. In my world I have been in this traditional male dominated left brain world in my entire career. When I started in my business it was 25% female 75% male. Today it is 25% female 75% male. Sandra: Wow. Janet: Yeah. And to me it is a wonderful, wonderful profession for women because we do want to help other people than any of us and it provides a lot of freedom and flexibility to be able to have more balance in life to raise a child and so be able to say that you are a successful person. So I am always grateful that women are even looking at financial planning as a profession. But you are right, first of all I think you have to figure out who you are, I mean who is it that you really are and you cannot serve the world. Travis: Right. Janet: As much as you want to, as much as we all have in us that we want to help other people really like in the financial planning world, the best coach is out there will tell you the narrower the niche the more successful you will be. And here is why in that industry, if I was a former airline pilot, who said I retire most airline pilots today most of them have retired at 60 now comes and go to 65. But they are relatively out when they retire; we see a lot of career changers in our profession. So if you are an airline pilot and you decided you want to be a financial planner and you said my only client is going to be airline pilot. I know what they do and I know what their pensions are like, I know what kind of health insurance they have, I know what stressors affect their life. That is way better than saying here is what my client look like, I serve teachers and doctors and dentist and stay at home moms, and retirees and 25 year old. Because if you do that, then you have to have a really broad range aid of knowledge, which in our industry is not kind like being a doctor I view myself as an internet, I am not a specialist in every area of financial planning by any mean. Travis: Right. Janet: So to serve a narrow niche now we have commonality, we have a vocabulary that is where we go to a place and while everyone is still different within the niche, we cannot be a cookie cutter that kind of approach, I still know what my clients are really, really looking for. When it comes right down to it they want somebody that understands that their money need to support their life, that their life is
  • 5. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 5 of 22 important, their families whatever their values are. They want a value discussion they don‟t want just like the stock market discussion. Travis: Sorry I didn‟t mean to interrupt you there, at the end of that point but you are attracting obviously you have an affinity for metaphysics. So you are now attracting what you have an affinity for, and you talk about that, can you talk more on that? Janet: Well, again I think it comes down to the authenticity. So for me, it was, what are the things that I am the most passionate about. I love helping people with money, I have my entire career, I also have a great deal of passion around self broke and self improvement and spirituality. So when I was able to blend those things together then my business went up the whole notch because it was like I don‟t need to go to work if you will and just do the financial planning part of this. And then save all this other stuff that I am passionate about for the evening in weekend. It was I am able to put all this into one container and hopefully attract people that are also interested in those types of things. It doesn‟t matter what those things are if I was passionate about playing golf or tennis then I would want to figure out a way to go take my client and play golf with me in the afternoon and don‟t wait until Sunday to do that. So it‟s the same premise it‟s just getting really clear on what are you passionate about, how you do more of that. Travis: Right, yeah, blending passion and business together. So it is closest possible to playing figuring out if you are playing or getting paid to play right, in that manner of speaking. Janet: Absolutely, absolutely. You define yourself being far away stressed out because you are blending the stuff that you love to do. And you stop doing the things that you don‟t love to do which is the huge thing I did I get in the way of a lot of people‟s success. I think if you spend more time figuring out what do I love to do and then how do I do more of that, how do I get the stuff that I don‟t love to do off my desk, I outsource more to people all over the country and they are doing test for me that needs to be done on a daily basis but they don‟t need to be done by me. Travis: Right. Sandra: What kind of things Janet. I don‟t think people know the whole world of outsourcing and I am one that if I don‟t do it no one else will do it. So it is odd sometimes to let someone else take the reins but could you give us some example of things that are outsourceable. Janet: Absolutely. In the financial management because I do, I am a CEO planner so I don‟t sell any products for commissions but I do manage money for free. And there is a whole section of that business called our back office which is daily downloading information on client‟s portfolio reconciling that data. It is kind of balancing your check book every day, the money all accounted for and I have a third party custodian that actually hold the money but I have a company out in Maryland that does this
  • 6. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 6 of 22 daily reconciliation works for me. They get the data file overnight and then in the morning when I come in to the office I have today‟s data on my desktop. I was in the cloud before they even call that as a cloud. When I started my own business 7 years ago, I decided from day one I want to be able to work anytime, anywhere, any place. I wanted that kind of freedom. I did not want to be locked in an office from 8 to 5. I didn‟t want file seating on a server that I couldn‟t get through if I am in the conference. So because of that everything I use is web based. Well this company in Maryland is web based so I went to a secure portal in the morning and there‟s all my client account. If I need a client, if I got a new client on board and there is always a ton of paper work to go around on setting out account and they have forms they have to chill out a lot of stuff I can shoot right out in a secure email and other things I can hire a virtual planner or a virtual assistant to do. And now again you could have somebody sitting in your office doing these things but my goal was I don‟t want anybody and my heart says because if I want to leave and travel for a month I want to lock the door and I don‟t have to worry about it. So I have people virtually that support me in all kinds of test and it is on as needed basis and so it close for awhile. Then having an employee is hard to find. So I do employ people I just don‟t employ them in my office. And it‟s really, really worth that while. My office is my sanctuary it‟s where I can come and go, I had no interruption. Part of this team, out of a situation, prior to opening my own business I work for the 12th Clarity Italian Firm in United States. And I am not a CPA but I was brought in to start their Financial Planning Investment Management Division. And when I left 5 years later we had put $500 million on their management which was a huge growth trade in our industry. We were the 2nd fastest growing advisory firm in United States in the 3rd year that we were in the business. But it was fast and furious and stressful and I travelled a lot and at one point I had 65 people reporting to me. So when I left there I was very burned out and said I do not want to do that again. It is like any of us go down the list and said I am not doing that again. So a lot of my wisdom has come from just being alive this far and saying I did that I don‟t want to do it again, I am not worried at it, I didn‟t have fun. So that was the kind of methodology I put in place to say how do I want to search my business and how can I have that nurture me and give me energy versus drain me so that at the end of the week I am not ready to go out and play and have fun. Travis: Yeah you can do at the things on your own terms right? Janet: Totally, totally on my own term. Other people I serve are my clients, they are the ones that now I have to be therefore rather than 65 employees all over the country that some of them I did not hire, so they were not pre hired for what we are trying to do, there is a lot of issues around that and I just said no more, life is too short, I do not want to be stressed. All the money I guarantee you all the income in the world does not make up for having a life that you feel depleted in, it is just there isn‟t enough money to make up for that or working in a job that you don‟t enjoy.
  • 7. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 7 of 22 Travis: Yeah, or having a business or job that is squeezing the life out of you, right? I feel a lot of people that are almost walking dead to me, they are unhappy, they are deflated, they are all of the things that they represent all of the emotions that I tried to avoid and that these people going and doing on a daily basis and I do not see how they do that. Now you are talking something earlier that I wanted to get out and talk a little deeper on which is the negativity or the conversation that is going on inside in your head that were still in as maybe I think most often as a child and as maybe as we were growing up. And I wanted to know where this until I set an event, the millionaire mind event, 500 people in the crowd and they have to go through a hundred word questionnaire and grade their selves 1 to 10, 1 being describes may your 0 to 10, this describes me or 10 it doesn‟t or vice versa, 0 doesn‟t fit me at all, 10 it describes me to a T, and really it was a trick to find out how much head, trash or negative thinking people had associated with money and it blew me away because he said how many people scored under 10 and it was just me and one other one person in the whole audience. Janet: Wow. Travis: And he said, “Stand up, I said okay where is this going?” and he said, ”Are you both financially free?” and we both said yes. And he said there is a reason why and a part of it is due to your thinking. And almost everyone else had some type of negative attachment or thought process to money and you said earlier that you see a lot of people that are doing great work but they are struggling financially. And I watched it ever since I went through this exercise and I see it a lot too that people are doing great things but they think that there is something wrong with being affluent. Can you talk more about that? Janet: Well, I don‟t think that it is all based on and there is something wrong with being affluent but most of this I think run very unconsciously. I believe we have an epidemic of people in this country who do not value themselves. And I was one of those to achieve. I‟m sure I came into this place not feeling good enough, it was not my parents fault, it was not that there is no one to blame, this is not about blame, this is just about something inside you that says I am not good enough, I am not smart enough, I am not something enough, I am not fool, and perfect the way that I am. And everybody listening to this, you are perfect the way that you are right now. I am a big believer that God doesn‟t make mistakes and he didn‟t create us imperfectly. Travis: Right. Janet: And when we learn to value ourselves, and love who we are everything out starts to fall into place including the money. I really think that most people don‟t have more because they don‟t feel that they deserve it. And so the negative messages in our head it is just our ego part of our brain convincing us that we are right, we don‟t deserve it. I have a client a long time ago, who and everybody has different comfort levels when it comes to money. I mean one person can save and say “I love to make a hundred thousand dollars a year” and off he set for life, and I say, “Well if I won a lottery and won a
  • 8. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 8 of 22 hundred million it wouldn‟t take me that long to spend it.” And people look at me like I am nuts and say, “Come on, you can buy yacht, you can buy three mansion, you can go buy an island in your yacht.” Most of us haven‟t been exposed to a lot of wealth and yet at the same time we did hear messages that oh my god, look at those people that‟s outrageous, who would want to drive a car like that, my god, so it‟s all these real stuffs—so I am going to ask everybody a question. This is one way that you can find out what your money messages are. I want to ask you to think about “What was your very first memory of money?” I want you to write that down. What is my first memory of money because if you can remember something that impacted you, it doesn‟t matter if you were 3 years old or you were 18 years old? But then the very first memory around money can be amazing to tell you what you are caring around inside you about money. Some of the truth of this in church that we heard messages around money that those were not positive in church. There are also a whole group of people even in our industry that I think kind of have the Mother Theresa syndrome although that is kind of unusual but we talk about it that way. They are thinking in order to be a good person that you don‟t want the trappings of life if you will. Well I will tell you what, Mother Theresa was one of the best manifestoes of money that ever had in this planet. She just didn‟t spend it on herself. But if she wanted to build money for the orphanage or new hospital she got it in no time. So it is okay I mean my goal in life is to be outrageously wealthy and outrageously grounded and secure and happy all of the same time. Travis: Right. Sandra: Yeah, I like that. Janet: Yeah, I am starting to get there. Because I really don‟t think there is anything wrong with having money. I think the more money you have the more good you can do in the world, anything from during illnesses to supporting any charity that you have the desire to support. So we talk ourselves out of through that negative mindset not consciously. I take people through exercises where I ask them to pay attention to what they are thinking, and then if they catch themselves, this is the trick you got to learn to catch yourself thinking a thought or saying a word if something stumbles out of your mouth it is kind of like for those of you that are moms you always vowed that boy when I have my kids I am never going to do what my mother did, sounds like my mother, then the first time your child does something look at your mom‟s words that comes out in your mouth. Well it‟s the same happens to money, if you can pay attention to what you are thinking and saying around money and then going like in an observer saying wait a second, is what I said really true? Is that really true? Travis: Right. Janet: Going to a wealthy, really, really wealthy neighbourhood, drive through here and see what stuffs comes out. See how you feel because if you are not there yet there is a reason you are not there yet. And it does have I think it has everything to do with how you are thinking. Everywhere we sell sabotage
  • 9. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 9 of 22 and that‟s not conscious that can be very unconscious, and why we are not attracting more ideal clients, why are we not believing in ourselves no matter what anybody else says about us. I love Dr. Wayne Dyer I have read almost everything he has ever written. He talks a lot about this because if you can change the way you think, you can change your entire life. And I think it starts with how you feel about yourself. You talk to yourself worst than you would ever talk to another human being on the planet. Travis: Right. Janet: If we change that, we change everything. Travis: Yes, Sandra and I have come to those conversations a lot. Janet: Yeah, yeah. Travis: And it is incredible than negative things that you let that little voice say to you. Janet: And I think the reason I mean through all of my studies and life experience, everybody comes from one up to places either love or fear. Those are really the two things that drive us. Even if you are angry of something, underneath that anger is a fear of something. Travis: Right. Janet: And people talk about fear of failure, fear of success, well it can be more basic than that but if you can get to those fear, I think we are afraid of our power, I really think people are afraid more of success than the failure. Because we all know of some level that failure doesn‟t mean death most of the time, we can make it feel that way. But if we try something new in the business and we fail, well that‟s how you learn. You don‟t learn from your success you learn from your failures. But the power that we have inside of us to really affect other people and to create magnificent things, we all have that we are born with it. We may not think we have it, we may not think we are created individuals, but we are hugely created. So it is that being willing to play a little bit with that power and uniquely. One thing that the school do not teach is to celebrate the fact that you are different. Whatever you are, celebrate that. Don‟t try to conform, don‟t go after people‟s approval. Figure out what is unique about you. What makes you excited to get out of the bed in the morning? And then the negative thoughts start to go away because you are just changing the way you are using. It is something like where I know I am a procrastinator. And I can be that myself all day long, and say I just wish I could stop procrastinating. That is the reason I am not succeeding. What if you turn to the route and said you know what procrastination sometimes just kept me from making some really stupid mistakes. Because if I had just build in and nap about it, I might go into a direction that will cost me even more money. So everything that we view as a negative can be a strength. But we are taught from the time we are little to sit in,
  • 10. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 10 of 22 conform, play by the role, not just create, not to try new things, not to be afraid of sailing. Most of us haven‟t had that experience. Travis: Right. Sit down, be quite, don‟t make a fool of yourself, stand in line, listen all of the things. I watched the great piece on the Chinese, it‟s about china and they were talking about one of the problems they felt, this is from their perspective, is that their culture trains creativity out of them. Of course everyone wants you to fall in line here but there there‟s very harsh penalty if you do not fall in line. Janet: That‟s right. Travis: So they spoke with a lot of young people that were at the high school or college level, I think it was called the china effect. They said by the time we get to college they have successfully trained every ounce of creativity out of us. Janet: Yup, yup. Travis: And they are afraid to color outside of the lines. I have talked about this on several episodes for years I was embarrassed I was such a terrible student and even a little bit troublemaker too. As I continued my education of growing to know myself better and just becoming a better person I realized that was the leader and creative nature in me that calls me to push button that I wouldn‟t supposed to and go places where I would supposed to actually that was the leadership in me. And that is what you are talking about here, right? Janet: Absolutely, absolutely yes. Really forget about what our family taught us, can you give in a place where you can say who am I, what am I doing here, why do I do the things that I do, and what do I love to do which I think really fuel that passion to not follow the herd and the luxury of having a business that supports all that. Believe it or not the more pieces of the puzzle you put together the more financially successful you become because you can‟t help it. Most people, I work with a number of people, many, many people that have extremely high wealth. And they got the money as the by product in the things they love to do. Bill gates did not say my goal is to be the richest man on the planet; my goal is to put computer in everybody‟s home. Travis: Right. Janet: So it is not just the money that is important but the reason I created this business called power over money because we have given away our power when it comes to money, we have given money more power when it should have, we have given a belief systems that it is not real. The bottom line is money is just money. It is just a really mutual thing that we decide while it is the measure of success. Some people believe that but that‟s a belief that‟s not the truth. For other people the idea of success is
  • 11. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 11 of 22 to say, I want to have a great family life and healthy children and I want to have a lot peace, I need money to survive but I don‟t need all the wealth in the world. I mean we all get to define what we want our lives to look like. That‟s the beauty of being in this country is that we can decide to do whatever we want to do, you have to believe in yourself, you have to believe in what you are doing, you have not to worry of what other people think you are not or if they don‟t approve on it. I mean I went a lot, I am saying this to my experience, for one time my dad said to me, Janet if you do this not the physical stuff, if you start talking about that to your clients you are going to lose your clients. And I thought long and hard about it and I kept falling back to the same thing that was the fear that was just the fear okay. And the only way that I could figure out to negate the fear was to just go do it and see what happens. And I kept thinking what is the worst thing that can happen here, if I do lose clients, well guess what I might attract even better clients. And you know what a year ago was when I started this process, I haven‟t watched any client. Travis: Which even attracted more ideal clients, right? Janet: I attracted the best client I ever had and she found me on a Google search, she was been to a different state. I don‟t market anymore, I don‟t spend any money on marketing, I think it‟s the waste of time, I put together on blog, I write about things that I think can help people and share information and hopefully the right people will resonate with what I am all about. And I am certainly not trying to convince the masses to come work with me. I want to have people that are like minded because they are the most fun, they are the most trusting, they get it, if we do have a common vocabulary it doesn‟t matter what your business is all about, how do you define who your ideal client is, and then what things can you do in that business to attract those ideal clients to you. Travis: Right. Janet: For some types of businesses it may take the marketing but you know what the internet is the biggest marketing device we have and it‟s amazing to me that people that are finding me. I put a Facebook page up for power over money and I am getting people all over the world that are liking that page. And I am not putting a ton of effort into this at. And I am like, wow this is amazing to me, it‟s amazing to me. Travis: Right. Hey Janet, what do you feel like, so I‟m the baby I am the number three of three kids in the family, where do you feel like that formula play in the voice, because the voice said my head is very different than the voice that talks to my oldest sister. And so do you feel like that has a role in setting the stage for that. Janet: Birth order? Travis: Yeah, birth order.
  • 12. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 12 of 22 Janet: I don‟t, for the lot of stuck in it, here‟s what I do for the lot of stuck in, I think we come into this life with a set of circumstances that we are suppose to learn from here while we are here on earth. I don‟t believe that this is the only time that we are incarnated, I do believe in reincarnation so I think we come here to learn things to continue to the vow spiritually. Because of that I think we come in with an agreed upon like me well this time I think I need to really work on my self esteem. Travis: Right. Janet: So I came in and set up a whole bunch of circumstances that would play into that womb if you will that I did not have a lot of self esteem when I was born. In fact, if you look at my mom had checked baby book for us and mine, I was the oldest and mine says sensitive, sensitive, sensitive. I cried until the drop of the head, I was very insecure even as a little child. So my parents, me and three kids we are all different in the family. I don‟t think it had a lot of bearing on who was born first, second or third as much as who decided, who was the most wounded that kind of a thing when we came in. I had a wonderful childhood, wonderful upbringing, support of family, my parents were terrific at whatever we guys want to do and you think you are capable of. But my brothers, sisters and I all look like we come from different family, we are totally different. So I can‟t blame so much in order I think it has to do with those wounds and until those wounds are healed. And Oprah talks about this a lot, that God kind of forgive your ear then hear something you need to pay attention to and if you don‟t pay attention to it like dating that first person that you dated, and then they are not really right for you but you kind of attracted by your wound. All we both come from divorce family and we both are the oldest to bring and I hear this people gravitating to each other and they are like oil and water. And they get married and the marriage doesn‟t work and then what do they do they come out of that and they go right down the path and marry somebody else that very similar, different name, different occupation, but with the same person. I did that over and over in my life until I finally figured it out what it is about me that keep attracting this people. Well it was the wound in me that treasures I am good enough to attract anybody better I mean basically, for until the wound to get healed you keep doing that and you have to realize in every area of your life, if it‟s the way you handle money, your relationships, or whatever, what is it about me that is setting up those circumstances and then when you are thinking is different the circumstances become different. When you start to feel more worthy, then you attract better friendship, better job, better clients, better everything because you feel more deserving. I think that is the basis of a lot of this for a lot of people, and for most of us it is so unconsciously going it all there, you don‟t even know it‟s there, you really don‟t know that we are not healing good enough. But if you insist all day long beating yourself up over stuff that you would never say to your best friend. When are you going to become your best friend? When are you going to be good to you? Travis: So how old were you, at what phase in your life did this hit you. When did you find this clarity?

THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 13 of 22 Janet: I am 57 now, and I think I hit my own little rock bottom if you will when I was about 42. I have already started exploring some things on the spiritual path, my issue was relationship, I didn‟t really have a lot of business issue, but I can be seeing this guy over and over and over again and it‟s finally dawn on me, I didn‟t think at it first during that and of course it is easy to blame the guy. It was always the guy who is asked why we broke up but one day I was like at the tiffany when I said, oh my god, they are all the same guy, they just have different name, different stuff, but they were all emotionally needy, financially needy, because I solely I was quote and quote better than them they won‟t going to leave me. And then once I figured it out it was me, I‟m like oh my god, and so then I started the kind of, my therapist is bound to noble. I was once in the bookstore started reading and learning everything I could learn. Found multiple different people that were in the healing profession that could help me. Because I don‟t think we can always do it on our own. And then once I started to heal the thoughts started to change and I felt better about who I was, and oh my god, there was just whole other woman out there; I didn‟t even want to participate it before. Some of this lack of self worth for a lot of us place and entered a low level of depression, we don‟t have a lot of energy, we can‟t live a vital, exciting life when we are not feeling good about who we are, because we just don‟t frankly want to participate all that much. Travis: Kind of hopelessness or something. Janet: I don‟t even think you can articulate it when you are in it, and I don‟t think you know you are in it until you get out of it, I don‟t think you have any idea how good good can be until you there. My life just gets better and better every single day, every single day. Sandra: I like that, I love that. Janet: Yeah, it comes from wanting it, the big part of it is I think I just hit that wall, or I said I don‟t want to do this anymore. There‟s got to be better than that, there‟s got to be. Sandra: Can I share with you guys something that I came up with being about money being on this show? Janet: Yes. Sandra: My dad was an airline pilot, I think that‟s when you said an airline pilot, for American airline and he was in the top # 1% of income but we never knew that growing up I literally taught we are in poverty because anything we want as a kid we have to work for, anything. And so I grew up with the message that the only way to have money is to work really, really hard. And so that become something that what I do for work because I work something really, really hard. And that‟s been a reality for me, and I have never known people that really wealthier didn‟t know them close. So when I met Travis a year ago, he shared just a real heartfelt story of bankruptcy to many millions. And I thought and I am looking at him like but he seems normal. People are different, I couldn‟t be that and I think meeting
  • 14. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 14 of 22 Travis is the first time like that, I thought that this guy is no different than me. And so I started even though I have been through a lot of work on myself and stuff I mean there‟s still conversation there in the area of money. I think your conversation is really great today Janet because so many of us business owners feel like we have our dreams, we have our desires, we have the things we love to do but we can‟t do them until we work really, really hard, and we get the money so the money will give us the time and then the time will give us the freedom to be able to do the things we love. So you are totally on a 180 on this it‟s like no, figure out the things you love first and through those passion and it‟s no coincidence that our show is called Diamonds in your own Backyard and that really is finding your diamonds within your passion within in order to have the success you want. So I really want to acknowledge and thank you for bringing that conversation to the forefront today. Janet: Well, thank you yeah. And that‟s... me to coach other people because sometimes we don‟t ask our self the question like what is the first memory of money or what if you had a hundred million dollars sitting in the bank right now, what would you change in your life? What would you do differently? Most people don‟t even say them really winning the lottery, and most lottery winners are broke and then worst shape three years after they win the money than before they won it. And it has everything to do with not feeling worthy or believing that they didn‟t work hard to get it. You will be trust funded, the money was handed down and they didn‟t do a thing to earn it. What were they doing, not all of them, a lot of them are on drug problems, have drug problems, alcohol problems, and we have to get ourselves ready inside to be able to handle the money on the outside and it is a reflection. You go hand in hand, so even if you get that really big client and deep down inside you say I didn‟t work hard on that you will find a way to sabotage that relationship and you won‟t do it consciously. So I ask people to start observing themselves, be your own coach, look at what you are saying, what are you doing, how you handle money, do you know what you are spending, do you know where your money is going every dime of it, do you know what you spend on Christmas last year, do you know what you spend on clothing, do you know what you spend on birthday presents every year? And this is not a judgment issue; this is not about going through this and beating yourself up over where your money is going. It is saying I am going to bring this all into the light because you know what if I really get conscious and aware around what I do with my money, I am going to learn something. It is the same as late last year, if you want to lose weight what is the first thing they ask you to do, start tracking what you eat. Be honest with yourself. Same thing on the money side, I think the universe supports you with your good store of your money and that means using your money to support what is important to you. You don‟t have anybody including a financial planner and say well, here‟s what you really are doing with your money. That‟s not a good financial planner does. A good financial planner says, okay you want go on vacation this year, do you realize that your spending is showing me that you are spending that money at Starbucks everyday or whatever it may be? I was a big book buyer. So I could easily say well yeah I will go on through at least $60 a month to Barnes and Nobles that‟s $600 a year. Change your spending and put it into an annual number because that‟s when it gets the enlightening. I help people
  • 15. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 15 of 22 quit smoking over this; you realize what you spend in a year on cigarette. It doesn‟t matter what you spend in a week that‟s a little number. What do you spend and all this different thing in a year and then you get to decide, you get to take your power back and say you know what, I would rather go on vacation, I drink my coffee from home. That‟s the conscious decision, that‟s about power but not unconsciously driving to Starbucks or wherever every morning and then saying for me, I don‟t even have enough money to go on vacation. I do this with my business, I go through this every time and all the time, I mean and then in this stage I will be spending a lot of money on things that I thought I need it and then a year later I went you know, why am I doing that? It‟s not returning anything to me so little by little I started cutting out this service, cutting out that because that money was just unconsciously going out the window sometimes. So it‟s later we all exist, we need it, just like me, even though ... I still say, oh my gosh, there is another area I wasn‟t even thinking about that. Let‟s get conscious about that, and we do have the power, you don‟t need somebody to tell you how you handle your money. You know how to do it, you got all the answers inside you, but you got to be willing to have the courage and to bring it all out into the forefront and examine it and not being denial around it. Travis: Yeah, to clarity issue just get crystal clear on what the compounding effect that your actions are. And I do the same thing when I go in and do analysis in the business, I break down the pricing model and most people and it surprises me, because people that have run a business for 20, 30 years once I break down their pricing modes and I show them their expenses and then their gross profit and then I show them what happens when I get discount 10% after that, most people are floored. That they are basically giving away the entire profit most often than not. Janet: Right. Travis: They are giving away the entire profit and the reason more often than not. They‟re giving the entire profit and the reason why this happens because so many businesses are so busy being busy, making sure the things are being handled on a microscopic scale, running in 50 different direction but they never step back and look at things from a distance and get a full big picture of what is going on, right? Janet: That‟s right. I think it doesn‟t have to be a big argue of things, it can be very fun, I damp all my transactions into there and then I go and run my report and say, wow I didn‟t realize on an annual basis, this is just what is costing me. And at the same time you have to have clarity about what it is you want, because when we aren‟t really clear about what we want in life, where we‟re headed, what our dreams are, what we really, really, really want, what is important for us, then it is so easy to go spend the money than spend on the hole that we have because we are on the path to get what we want or we don‟t know what we want. Travis: Right.
  • 16. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 16 of 22 Janet: Again it goes back to spiritual you want in your life, are you using the money in a way that supporting the vision that you have in your life? And you need to do it personally and in the business and you need to do it all the time. I look at Oprah because I heard her say one time that in all the years that she had her TV show, she handled her money, she paid the bills, or she authorized the payment of the bill, she knew where her money was going. She is never going to be one of the stories that you hear that somebody embezzled extra money dollars on her, because she paid attention, because she was conscious about it. And that makes all the difference in the world and it makes you feel like you do have power. When you can say, you know what we need an entrepreneur, let me look at, let me really make a good decision. How many copies are we making in a month, how much paper do we buy? Let me make sure I understand this thing so that I can get something that‟s going to be good, smart purchase here. You don‟t have to be an accountant at all to understand any of this stuff; it is just a simple math and being willing to look at it. It can change your life and it‟s little tiny thing to make a huge difference. It‟s all of the tweaking, it‟s not usually some big overriding problem that you have that you didn‟t know you have, it is usually something that you said Travis where 10% can make the difference between profitable and not profitable. Travis: Right. Janet: And it‟s all that kind of stuff, that diligence, that willingness to just look at things and get them out into the open. And then again and again, again and again, and you keep getting a little bit more clarity, and more clarity. With this expenditure supporting what I want to do, what I am passionate about, or is it just money that I am spending because I wasn‟t busy that day and look like a good purchase. And to me, it was life changing, it was totally life changing. I gave up a huge income when I left corporate in America, I was making 25% of what I made at the accounting firm when I started my own business. And I was fortunate that my husband also had a job so he had all the benefit so I did not worry about that. I am now making more than when I was at the accounting firm. My business has grown by 70% a year an average for the last 7 years in a row. And that is all through of intention that is all through clarity and believe me I don‟t work hard for this, I just do it. And I had a lot of fun doing all the stuff I love to do. Even though if I am a financial planner, numbers is not my thing. I am not an engineer that wants to look at pages and pages in spreadsheet, I want a bottom line and I want to know I am going on the right direction here. But we all can do that, it is really all about getting clear of what you want and paying attention to this old money messages. Like you said Sandra, when you think that you need to work hard in order to make more money, I can prove to you that is not true. Travis: Right. Janet: I am making more than a hundred thousand dollars a week, and I don‟t put in more than 35 hours a week.
  • 17. THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 17 of 22 Travis: Actually the farther you get away from physical work that normally the more money you make. I have been mentoring her and her business and she is regularly drawing this high level of incredible pain, effort, and everything out on our self. And it is just a mindset that she has got to hold and get permission to not do that and we talk a lot about becoming the leader of the orchestra, rather than playing in the orchestra. Janet: Yeah. Travis: Because she gets so caught up doing the heavy movie things because she can‟t and she wants to help but it was not just the right move for her. Sandra: You got to get, I am just saying it so clearly that Travis came into my life just when I needed them. And now „Wala‟ here is Janet, there is no, I have had the intention and may not be an overnight kind of thing but this just happens. But I think the more we hear a message, and the more people we made, and the more people we have in our life that are successful in it, that belief system that I don‟t matter or not good enough that can really be what it takes to turn it around and say, hey I am no different than this two, or this three, or this four. Travis: Right. Sandra: So who you hang around with, so Janet thanks, thank you just personally for this conversation today because it really made a difference for me. Janet: Well, I am really glad and that‟s all you have to do is you are willing to help one person and then there is a plan and we all learn from each other, I am not done learning. I mean I intend to be a student for the rest of my life because everyone you run into; when you start living from the metaphysical perspective there are no accidents. Everybody unique and talk to there‟s a reason behind it, that‟s part of a bigger plan. And when you get in that slow in paying attention to what cool things that can happen today that can really help me out. It starts with clarity and having the desire to go after what is it that you are excited about in life, whatever that is. Everything else will then come to you, that is why I don‟t spend money on marketing. I really do believe that I am attracting the right people to me. Whether it‟s through referrals from existing client who is happy, who happens to tell their friends or if something that I wrote on my blog, and somebody found it and said I need to learn more, I need to talk to her. It all will happen and some of it does not happen overnight, sometimes we get a little frustrated with that, that‟s really kind of again that‟s our own little negativity, gosh we are not yet anywhere, blah blah blah, look at the things that you are good at, look at the things that you accomplished, those are the other things I want to mention, when you were talking earlier Travis many, many business owners are really good at a lot of things. But that does not mean you need to be doing them all yourself. I have been to accounting firm for 10 years, and I will tell you most accountants are the worst delegators in the world,

THE ENTREPRENEUR’S RADIO SHOW Conversations with Self-made Millionaires and High-level Entrepreneurs that Grow Your Business Copyright © 2012, 2013 The Entrepreneur‟s Radio Show Page 18 of 22 they really will have to control everything and nobody can do it better than me. And here I am talking to a partner in a firm who has been in hardest season he ever had. And I said you know what something is wrong because you should not be working that way. So we have to go back and look at ourselves and say, this is isn‟t about control it is about surrender. It is letting other people do the things that you are not excited about, imagine if your business only have people in it that loves to do what they are doing. Travis: Right. Janet: If I hire an assistant tomorrow, it would be I want somebody who do not like me; I want somebody who is going to love to do all the stuff that I do not love to do. And it is all that done in this fun exciting life. Travis: And you get to be excited every morning. Janet: Everyday, if you are not excited to go to work everyday then you got to figure out why, well I don‟t have the money coming in so I cannot hire a help, that‟s okay. But you know what in any local college there are kids who would work for free to get experience in your line of work. You just need to go look for them. Travis: Hey Janet, if our listeners want to know more about you and have a conversation with you, how would they find you? Janet: Well, I am more than happy to give out email address and phone number, they can certainly go to my blog, the main business is jataj.com, which is just Janet Tyler Johnson, my initial capital A is thrown in, so that‟s where money and metaphysics meet, that‟s the main blog. And then power over money which is really dedicated to entrepreneurs who are serving others, it‟s simply powerovermoney.com. My phone number is 608-219-0113 and email address is jtjohnson@jataj.com. Travis: What stage of entrepreneur do you like to work with, what stage business, what level? Janet: It isn‟t so much of the stage of the business, I think it is the level of the frustration. Because whether you are new, starting out or you been in the business for 30 years it is never, ever too late to get this kind of clarity. So my ideal client is someone who wants to really get clear about what they want in their lifetime and tailor makes that business to support that life. Travis: Okay. Janet: It doesn‟t matter what kind of business you are in, but you have to be at that stage in your life where you say you know what something has got to change, and then you are ready for coach, and then you are ready to do what it‟s going to take on the inside which many people stood out there that

I think it‟s a lot of fun, it‟s a lot of inspiration, it‟s like you said oh my gosh that‟s one question, what an „aha‟ moment. And now you just ask yourself with that belief you have with working hard is true, and you say of course not I know all kinds of wealthy people that are not working hard. Why do I believe that all my life, you just throw that out, you don‟t judge yourself, you don‟t beat yourself up, you say you know what, that is not serving me anymore, I am going to get rid of that and I am going to say, hmm what can I get done in 30 hours a week instead of 40, or 70 instead of 100, whatever it is. And take daily steps and do it. So this isn‟t hard work, it‟s just things that I believe it‟s just never been taught. Travis: I agree, I agree with you. Janet, you have been an excellent guest we appreciate your taking out the time of your day and spending it with us and sharing your incredible vast knowledge of business and all the things that you have learned over several years, Sandra do you want to add anything before I wrap things up? Sandra: Well, just a big thank you, I think there are many of us listening today that you have just really impacted and give us a new perspective on how to look at work, passion, money and to actually come from your passions to have it all. I want to thank you for that new perspective and just really for your time and being part of us today. Thanks. Janet: You‟re welcome and I am really, really grateful to both of you because I think you can tell from the way I am talking I am so passionate that other people don‟t have to keep struggling. The world needs what people are putting out there, it needs that more today than ever, and if we can help each other all be better, it makes us huge difference in people‟s lives. So if I can help even one person, just struggle little less, be more successful more quickly, and enjoy what they do every day, what‟s better than that? Sandra: Not much. Janet: Not much. I mean that‟s why I say in my life, I am 57 today, I have no, no eye on retirement. I don‟t want to stop on what I am doing it just absolutely a blessing, I feel grateful and then gratitude I think place into this a lot to my own success. I am so grateful for all of the people that have helped me along the way and having the courage sometimes to ask for help, for a long time I didn‟t, I tried I was really giving in and that it was a sign of weakness to ask somebody else help me but not anymore. Travis: I second that Janet. I second it, great job. Sandra: And I third it. You let people contribute and we all know how good it feels to give and so if you don‟t love somebody to contribute, it‟s good so sometimes we need that.

Travis: Right. Janet: You have to be willing to give in the flow of nature, and part of that is receiving the rewards for the gift that you have given for others. So thank you so much both of you for this opportunity and for the business that you are building, you are doing great work in the world, I am really, really thrilled that you are gracious enough to allow me to be here today. End of Interview Travis: Oh, not a problem. I am looking forward to meeting you at AIA export industry if you decide to attend this year. I want to get on myself back to one quick second. So people get coaches for zumba dancing, people get coaches for working out, people get nutrition coaches, they get Spanish coaches, they get all these different types of coaches. But no one is getting a coach for their business. That is crazy. I want you to take in the consideration of what Janet is talking about. Get yourself a coach in your business, now I can guarantee, Janet doesn‟t care, I don‟t care if you choose me, her, anyone, but it‟s very, it‟s impossible to see the true aspects of what‟s going on in your business. When you‟re depend on it and so when you get in outside person that comes in and start asking questions and wants to get on to the bottom of what‟s going on, you are going to be in a position to make an incredible change in your business, that will impact your life, your ability to give, and everybody in your circle of influence.
