2. Outside the Home
â Move all items that could blow around into your home or garage-
including garbage cans, patio furniture, and grills.
â Replace landscaping gravel or rock with shredded bark which will
cause less damage when airborne.
â Cover the pool pump filter if you have one.
3. Garage
â Store all vehicles in your garage. Moor
your boat. Anchor the doors.
â Consider hurricane-resistant doors or a
steel bracing kit to help protect against
high winds.
â Have a door technician inspect your
door to determine what options are
available to you.
4. Windows
â Your windows should have permanent, impact-
resistant shutters with fasteners for easier
installation and removal of protective panels.
â Panels should be at least 3/4" thick for best
protection.
5. Doors
â Entrance and exit doors should have
three hinges and a dead bolt lock with at
least one inch of bolt throw so it does not
come unbolted with heavy shaking.
â Anchor door frames to the walls with
fasteners that are at least 3" long.
â Get tempered glass patio doors.
Home Exterior
â Have a roofing expert examine your
shingles.
â They may need extra cement to keep them
from peeling off and flying.
â Caulk any cracks or holes where wires,
pipes, or cables come into the house.
