This document provides instructions for connecting a file server and setting up network drives and locations on Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04. It discusses what network drives and locations are, how to map a network drive on Windows 7 by selecting a drive letter and entering the server path, and how to create an FTP network location by adding the FTP URL. It also explains how to temporarily or permanently change the hostname in Ubuntu 14.04 by editing the hostname and hosts files.

3. About Network Drives and Network Locations
In order to access shared network resources, you can create Two Type shortcut to a folder shared by server on the network.
A mapped network drive has the following characteristics:
•It has a drive letter assigned like any other partition in your system.
•It points to a network shared folder.
•It points only to resources found on your network.
•You need the appropriate credentials to connect to it.
You can also create shortcuts to a web resources like a web share or an FTP server.
A network location has the following characteristics:
•It is a shortcut to a web location like a website or FTP site.
•It can point to either external resources found on the Internet and to resources found in your network/intranet.
•You need the appropriate credentials to connect to it.
•It doesn’t have a driver letter assigned.
Both network drives and network locations are stored individually for each user account. They are available only from the user account that has created them and they are not available for all the users on the same Windows computer or device.
4. Setting Hosts File on Widows 7
In order to access FTP serverand network drive, It is necessary to edit your Hosts file.
To access the Hosts file in Windows 7 you can use the following command in the Run Line to open notepad and the file.
Type in
‘notepad C:¥windows¥system32¥drivers
¥etc¥hosts’

Enter ‘192.168.1.250 server1’
Now that you have edited your Hosts file make sure to save it.
6. What is Network Drive?
•Drive mapping is how operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, associate a local drive letter (A through Z) with a shared storage area to another computer over a network. After a drive has been mapped, a software application on a client's computer can read and write files from the shared storage area by accessing that drive, just as if that drive represented a local physical hard disk drive.

Open Computer to display your connected drives.
Click the Start menu and then click Computer.
Click Map Network Drive.

Select a drive letter. This is the letter that will appear on the network to identify the drive.
Pick a letter towards the end of the alphabet to avoid conflicting with existing physical drives.
Type in the location into the field by entering "¥¥server1:7070¥alfresco" to navigate to the folder that you want to map as a drive.
Then hit Finish .

12. What’s FTP Network Locations
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard Internet protocol for transmitting files between computers on the Internet. Like the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which transfers displayable Web pages and related files, and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which transfers e-mail, FTP is an application protocol that uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols.
FTP is commonly used to transfer Web page files from their creator to the computer that acts as their server for everyone on the Internet.
It's also commonly used to download programs and other files to your computer from other servers.
13. How to access FTP server
Click Internet Explore
Type in URL “ftp://server1:2121/alfresco/sites/”
14. How to access FTP server
Type in the Username and Password of Your Sites.
The Sites can be also opened by File Explore.
15. How to access FTP server
•The File Explorer can be able to Drag and Drop Action.
•You can update only the sites that you are belong.

Open Windows Explore on Computer
Right click somewhere on the available empty space.
Select “Add a network location”.

The “Add Network Location” wizard is now displayed .Press “Next”.
You are asked where you want to create this network location and given only one choice. Select “Choose a custom network location” and press “Next”.

•You can now browse its contents and use it according to the permissions given to the user account you have used to authenticate.

How to Remove a Network Location
•Removing a mapping to a website or FTP site is similar. You need to find the mapped network location in Windows Explorer (Windows 7) or File Explorer (Windows 8.x). You will find it in the “Computer” section in Windows 7 or “This PC” section in Windows 8.x.
•Right-click on it (or press and hold) and select “Delete”.
22. How to edit Hostname in Ubuntu 14.04
•The default name was set when you were installing Ubuntu. You can easily change it to whatever you want in both Desktop & Server by editing the hosts and hostname files. Below is how:
•1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Ton keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the below command:
•hostname NEW_NAME_HERE
•This will change the hostname until next reboot. The change won’t be visible immediately in your current terminal. Start a new terminal to see the new hostname.

2. Permanent change Hostname
•To change the name permanently, run command to edit the host files:sudogedit/etc/hostname /etc/hosts
•For Ubuntu server without a GUI, run sudovi /etc/hostname and sudovi /etc/hosts and edit them one by one.
•In both files, change the name to what you want and save them.
•Finally, restart your computer to apply the changes.
