3. You have to answer two questions on the novel.
Part (a) is based on a short extract and will be marked out of ten using
AO1 and AO2.
For part (b) OR part (c) you will have to write an essay on the novel.
You will have a choice of two essay titles. Your essay will be marked out of
twenty using AO1 and AO4.
You will also receive a mark for SPAG (max of 4)
You are NOT allowed to take copies of the text into the examination.
You will have one hour to complete both of your answers on Pride and
Prejudice (Don’t forget, this is just one section of a two-hour exam.)
You should spend about 20 minutes on part (a) and about 40 minutes on
part (b) OR part (c).

THIS IS LITERATURE, that means you PEEL for the A/A* grades in
the extract question.
This exam is asking you to ANALYSE in DETAIL, referring to specific
words and phrases and exploring the symbolic, literal and metaphorical
meaning of things in the novel.
14. WHOLE TEXT QUESTION
Question 2 – Will always be a whole text question.
You need to PLAN for this question.
You need to talk about the WHOLE TEXT and IDEAS and
try to QUOTE.
LINK the ideas to the novel as a whole.

ANSWER.
Step 1 – READ THE QUESTION TWICE
Step 2 – BRAINSTORM your ideas – what could you write about in
response to the question.
Step 3 – PUT your ideas in the order you will write about them and try
to think of a short ‘quote’ to match
Step 4 – Write your opening sentence USING WORDS from the
question.
Step 5 – Use your PLAN to structure your answer, discussing the
novel in DETAIL
