2. Polaroid Film
My magazines aesthetic is raw and gritty
and is about showing my generation
through people and activities. I thought
that adding some polaroid images would
add some more dynamic and portray the
raw, grittiness that I want. I took some
test shots of one of my models: Robyn
Noble, and I loved that effect of polaroid
images, the edginess of the effect is
exactly what I wanted. I turned it to black
and white to see if I still liked the effect
and I did but I do prefer the coloured
effect as I gets the mood across through
colour.
3. Editing
I knew that with my aesthetic some of my images wouldn't be the best quality because of a
few factors; camera quality, location and aesthetic. Sometimes a blurry image is exactly the
aesthetic and look that fits but I do need to be able to define the images. Therefore I
downloaded lightbox and worked on brightening and refining images. I edited the exposer
very slighting but focused on highlight and defining areas with shadow and editing the
blacks and whites. I also smoothened the image in photoshop.
Before After
6. Pixelate
In my magazine I want photography/ the images to be the focal point as it is social
culture magazine. But I want the whole magazine to be a gritty, raw, documentary
photography with an edge. To get this edge I'm going to edit images in multiple
different ways but effects that fit with my aesthetic. One effect I like was pixelating
the eyes on my models. I chose three images of past shoots and tested this idea
on them, I like the outcome but still feel like it needs more, therefore I printed them
out and started drawing on top of each image, just small doodles with a pen to draft
if it works for my magazine or not. Even though the quality isnt the best, I can see
the effct of the writing with this experiment and I do like the idea. The idea behind
the pixelating and the writing/doodles is to show different individuals in generation
Z but take away their identity (through pixelation) and replace with labels, basic
labels that describe one characteristic. This whole effect is to show that our
generation isnt just what we look like or how we're seen, and how we can't be
labled as just one thing, we have many charatistics and you cant judge by
appearance.
8. Opacity
Another experiment I did to manipulate my images was play around with th eopacity of an
image. I'd take an image and dupicate the caharcater(2) and edit the opacity on the layer
with only the charater(s) so that it fades and blends with the first layer. I used the 'advanced
blending' option and set the opacity to 71% to give the image the look of motion almost, the
effect is like a glitch and create a more interesting look for the image. I like this effect and
will feature it in my magaizne to add some extra effect with my photography. I want to habe
a few effects in my magazine to keep my photography interesting to the readers.
9. Writing Experiments
My magazine's focal point is the photography, I'm also including some text. These texts may be a
small paragragh or a quote, reminicising over the idea of growing up and the stages between 18-
21. Each piece of text will be different in design and in colour. I wanted to add some text so that
the images arent overwhelmg the magazine and so that the audince don't get bored by only
seeing images, with text it allows the reader to pause and read and he proceed allowing the
reader to have a fresh mind when carrying on looking at images, the text acts like a barriar to slip
up the photography.
I tried multiple software's to see which gave me the effect I wanted. I tried photoshop, Graphics
tablet, and scanning. I used the graphics tablet to see if I was able to get my writing neat and
together and able to read. I knew that if I liked the results with the graphics tablet then the writing
stage would be made a lot easier because its isn't able ready to be used, when if I scan I have to
scan and edit the text to get then visible and defined enough on top of the image. The graphics
tablet was disappointing because I couldn’t get as used to it as I liked and my work ended up a
bit rough and messy, I decided not to use the graphics tablet for my production work. The
photoshop effect came out brilliantly and I do plan on featuring some quotes but I'll be using the
scanning technique for the majority of my writing in my magazine.
