ABOUT ME
I am a third year at the University of
Cincinnati and this is my second year in
Urban Planning. I originally came to the
University of Cincinnati to study Civil
Engineering but I have found my true
passion for Urban Planning.
I grew up in a small suburb about 30
minutes east of Cleveland. In high
school, I attended a college preparatory
program called Excel TECC where I was
in the CADD (Computer Aided-Drafted
Design) program. While I was in this
program I fell in love with drafting and
data analysis.
I hope to continue my education by
pursuing a Master’s in Community
Planning through the University of
Cincinnati. At the time of graduation, I
will also have a certificate in Profession-
al Communication and a minor in Real
Estate.
Hobbies and Interests
Dance
I was apart of Noreen Londregan School
of Dance (NLSD) beginning at age 5. I
began dancing on the competition team
at age 11. During my time at NLSD, I was
classically trained in ballet, tap, jazz,
contemporary, lyrical and Cecchetti.
Theater
Throughout my adolescence, I was
involved in Mayfield Youth Theater
(MYT). MYT is a theater involving
students from various schools and ages.
At MYT I played small roles in many
shows and had lead roles in the shows
a Midsummer Nights Dream and Our
Town.
As I got older, I became involved with
my high school’s drama department.
After playing an ensemble role in Tarzan
the Musical, I became involved with
stage management and technical work.
Sports
Although I am not a college athlete, I do
enjoy playing sports in my spare time.
During my childhood, I played softball,
hockey, tennis and was a member of my
local swim team.

COLLEGE YEAR 1
AN ANALYSIS OF OVER-THE-RHINE
My second semester of
Urban Planning focused on
an area of Cincinnati known
as Over-The-Rhine (OTR).
OTR has been a key factor
in the growth and decline
of Cincinnati from the very
beginning. Throughout the
semester, analysis was been
done to understand Over-
The-Rhine deeply. As
planners, we must
understand the people of an
area to create projects that
impact those within it
correctly. Each student
picked a site to revitalize in
the area. This map was
created with ArcGIS using
data from CAGIS.

8 9
In order to help visualize
my original perceptions of
Over-The-Rhine an
impressions map was made.
The impressions map is
meant to give a basic
interpretation of the area.
The focus is on what
areas stood out or made an
impression. This map was
made by using ArcGIS and
drawing over a printed map
with markers.
Based on Kevin Lynch’s The
Image of a City this map
was created to help
understand how observers
look at Over-The-Rhine.
Lynch had a five-year study
that helped to understand
how users understand
surroundings in consistent
and predictable ways. It was
found that in each mental
map created by an observer
five elements where used:
paths, edges, districts,
nodes and landmarks. This
map uses those five
criteria to show OTR. This
was created using ArcGIS
and the Adobe Creative
Cloud Programs.

After analysis of the areas
demographics I choose to
take the Kroger site on Vine
Street in OTR and redevelop
it. At the time of this
redevelopment plan the
Kroger site was planned to
be demolished and turned
into a parking lot. The OTR
Kroger is a vital food supply
for the population in OTR
and it should be replaced
with something that will
help fill the gap that will be
created by it being removed.
This project focused on ac-
cessibility and neighborhood
feel. By keeping the building
facãde the same as those on
the street and moving the
building forward, the
building fits better than a
typical new build.
The top image shows the
existing Kroger site and the
bottom image shows the
apartment building/shop
that would replace it. The
apartment would be
affordable housing options
and the bottom level would
create room for shops that
would supply similar items
to the Kroger that was being
removed.
12’ 12’40’
12’ 40’ 79’
The top image shows the
original elevation of the
Kroger site. Where the
bottom image shows the
elevation of the rest of the
street. In order to fit both
images on the page, they are
not in the same scale. But, it
is still shown how drastically
different the Kroger site’s
elevation is compared to the
rest of the street. The pro-
posed redevelopment plan
moved the building forward
in order to keep the same
elevation as the rest of the
street. This helped increase
uniformity on the street and
allowed for a better feel of
the street. These were created
in AutoCAD and then edited
in the Adobe Creative Cloud
programs.

AN ANALYSIS OF SAFETY ON CAMPUS

how far they can see, the amount of traffic or the light

clear where people feel the most safe on campus.

Throughout my first
semester at DAAP I worked
on a project surrounding the
idea of safety on campus.
This graphic use colors dark
red-brown, tan and light
blue to show various
levels of safety.With the dark
red-brown indicating where
someone would feel the
least safe and the light blue
indicating where someone
would feel the safest. Each
sketch was used to represent
examples of safe and unsafe
spaces on campus.
Return to Table of Contents
14 15
In order to determine what
can make a space feel more
or less safe, I focused on the
idea of encloser. Using the
same coloring as the last
page with dark red-brown
being the least safe and light
blue being the safest. As
this infographic shows, the
more enclosed space is the
more uncomfortable a space
will feel. This comes from
the natural human desire
to want to be aware of your
surroundings.
In this project, I used three
different sketches to
represent spaces on campus
of varying levels of safety.
This first sketch is of
McMicken commons which
is one of the most open
spaces on campus.
Additionally, there is no
enclosure from the top
which would further limit
someone’s viewshed.
Furthermore, the space is
large but is not too large
where someone would be
unable to see someone in the
distance.
Return to Table of Contents Return to Table of Contents
16 17
The second sketch that was
used was this one of
Mainstreet. Although
Mainstreet is often
frequented by people, the
space can limit one’s
viewshed. Not only is the
viewshed limited by
buildings but it is also
limited by the enclosures the
buildings create.
Additionally, pedestrian
traffic is often very heavy.
This can make a large space
feel crowded and make one
feel uncomfortable.
The third and final sketch
that was used is this one of
the Geology Tunnel. The
Geology Tunnel is very
dark and secluded making
anyone who enters feel
extremely unsafe. Despite
just being dark the space
is not very large and is also
enclosed by the top. This
space is extremely enclosed
which limits the viewshed
of anyone who enters.

Continuing with the project
on safety, I created two
sensibility maps to show
safety. The first (right) is a
hand-drawn map using the
same color scale as the
previous projects. With the
red-brown being the least
safe and the light blue
representing the safest part
of campus.

The second sensibility map
was created using Adobe
Illustrator. In this map, each
viewshed on campus was
drawn. The more the
viewsheds overlap, the safer
the area would be. So, the
darker red indicates the
safest areas on campus
where the light pink is the
least safe space.

FOUNDATIONS/BASICS
This project was my first use
of the program ArcGIS. This
map was created by using
CODAS to generate data of
the University of Cincinnati
campus. Each layer had to
be manipulated in order for
a clear reading of the map.
By changing line widths and
color the map became much
clearer.

This is a hand drawn
figure-ground map of the
University of Cincinnati.
This map was created by
using the ArcGIS map that
was generated and shown on
the previous page. This map
was created by tracing the
ArcGIS map with rulers and
other precision tools.
This is a hand drawn
pathways map of the
University of Cincinnati.
Each different type of
pathway is represented
by different symbology
as shown in the legend. A
‘shared pathway’ is a
pathway that is shared
between pedestrians and
automobiles.

In AutoCAD, two maps were
generated. This map is a
figure-ground map of the
University of Cincinnati. In
this map, white was used to
represent the buildings and
black was used to represent
the foreground. By making
this color choice the
buildings stand out less and
the map is overall harder to
read than a black on white
map.

HIGH SCHOOL
FOUNDATIONAL WORK IN REVIT, AUTOCAD AND SOLIDWORKS
During my time at Excel
TECC CADD, I also learned
several programs
including Revit. This page
shows my semester final of
my senior year in the
program. The project was to
create a ‘man-cave’ or
‘she-shed’ and include
everything we would like
in one. The class was given
restrictions including how
large it could be and a few
minimum interior
requirements. Since I am
always working on
something and I love to cook,
I made sure mine had a small
business nook and a full
kitchen.

Before coming to the
University of Cincinnati I
was apart of a post-
secondary program at my
high school called Excel
TECC CADD. This program
focused on Engineering and
Architecture. While I was in
this program I had the
opportunity to create a
prosthetic hand for a
recipient in my
neighborhood. The hand is
completely 3-D printed and
works with the bending of
the wrist. My recipient
Manny lives in a neighboring
city to my hometown and
was 10 years old at the time
of the creation of his hand.
He was born without fully
developed hand and this
hand allowed him to par-
ticipate in things he always
wanted to.
After Manny was awarded
with his hand, the design
of the hand went to several
competitions and even to
Germany. The design was
awarded first place at the
SkillsUSA Ohio competition
and then went on to win fifth
place at the national
SkillsUSA competition. This
photo shows former
President Obama and the
former Chancellor of
Germany Angela Merkel
seeing the hand at the largest
trade fair in the world that is
hosted in Munich, Germany
every year. The created of the
3-D printer that was used to
make the hand (MakerGear)
took the hand to Germany to
show how 3-D printers can
impact others.

I originally came to the University of Cincinnati to study Civil Engineering but I have found my true passion for Urban Planning. I grew up in a small suburb about 30 minutes east of Cleveland. In high school, I attended a college preparatory program called Excel TECC where I was in the CADD (Computer Aided-Drafted Design) program. While I was in this program I fell in love with drafting and data analysis. I hope to continue my education by pursuing a Master’s in Community Planning through the University of Cincinnati. At the time of graduation, I will also have a certificate in Profession- al Communication and a minor in Real Estate. Hobbies and Interests Dance I was apart of Noreen Londregan School of Dance (NLSD) beginning at age 5. I began dancing on the competition team at age 11. During my time at NLSD, I was classically trained in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, lyrical and Cecchetti. Theater Throughout my adolescence, I was involved in Mayfield Youth Theater (MYT). MYT is a theater involving students from various schools and ages. At MYT I played small roles in many shows and had lead roles in the shows a Midsummer Nights Dream and Our Town. As I got older, I became involved with my high school’s drama department. After playing an ensemble role in Tarzan the Musical, I became involved with stage management and technical work. Sports Although I am not a college athlete, I do enjoy playing sports in my spare time. During my childhood, I played softball, hockey, tennis and was a member of my local swim team. • 4. 7 COLLEGE YEAR 1 AN ANALYSIS OF OVER-THE-RHINE My second semester of Urban Planning focused on an area of Cincinnati known as Over-The-Rhine (OTR). OTR has been a key factor in the growth and decline of Cincinnati from the very beginning. Throughout the semester, analysis was been done to understand Over- The-Rhine deeply. As planners, we must understand the people of an area to create projects that impact those within it correctly. Each student picked a site to revitalize in the area. This map was created with ArcGIS using data from CAGIS. Return to Table of Contents
  • 5. 8 9 In order to help visualize my original perceptions of Over-The-Rhine an impressions map was made. The impressions map is meant to give a basic interpretation of the area. The focus is on what areas stood out or made an impression. This map was made by using ArcGIS and drawing over a printed map with markers. Based on Kevin Lynch’s The Image of a City this map was created to help understand how observers look at Over-The-Rhine. Lynch had a five-year study that helped to understand how users understand surroundings in consistent and predictable ways. It was found that in each mental map created by an observer five elements where used: paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. This map uses those five criteria to show OTR. This was created using ArcGIS and the Adobe Creative Cloud Programs. Return to Table of Contents Return to Table of Contents
  • 6. 10 11 After analysis of the areas demographics I choose to take the Kroger site on Vine Street in OTR and redevelop it. At the time of this redevelopment plan the Kroger site was planned to be demolished and turned into a parking lot. The OTR Kroger is a vital food supply for the population in OTR and it should be replaced with something that will help fill the gap that will be created by it being removed. This project focused on ac- cessibility and neighborhood feel. By keeping the building facãde the same as those on the street and moving the building forward, the building fits better than a typical new build. The top image shows the existing Kroger site and the bottom image shows the apartment building/shop that would replace it. The apartment would be affordable housing options and the bottom level would create room for shops that would supply similar items to the Kroger that was being removed. 12’ 12’40’ 12’ 40’ 79’ The top image shows the original elevation of the Kroger site. Where the bottom image shows the elevation of the rest of the street. In order to fit both images on the page, they are not in the same scale. But, it is still shown how drastically different the Kroger site’s elevation is compared to the rest of the street. The pro- posed redevelopment plan moved the building forward in order to keep the same elevation as the rest of the street. This helped increase uniformity on the street and allowed for a better feel of the street. These were created in AutoCAD and then edited in the Adobe Creative Cloud programs. • 7. 13 COLLEGE YEAR 1 AN ANALYSIS OF SAFETY ON CAMPUS University of Cincinnat Sensability Map: Safety PLAN 1011 Emily Pietrantone Shilpa Mehta October 12 2018 Legend Most Safe Least S Many factors can make a person feel safe.Wether it be how far they can see, the amount of traffic or the light in a place. By using a mix of dark red brown and blue clear where people feel the most safe on campus. 0 50 100 200 Throughout my first semester at DAAP I worked on a project surrounding the idea of safety on campus. This graphic use colors dark red-brown, tan and light blue to show various levels of safety. With the dark red-brown indicating where someone would feel the least safe and the light blue indicating where someone would feel the safest. Each sketch was used to represent examples of safe and unsafe spaces on campus. Return to Table of Contents
  • 8. 14 15 In order to determine what can make a space feel more or less safe, I focused on the idea of encloser. Using the same coloring as the last page with dark red-brown being the least safe and light blue being the safest. As this infographic shows, the more enclosed space is the more uncomfortable a space will feel. This comes from the natural human desire to want to be aware of your surroundings. In this project, I used three different sketches to represent spaces on campus of varying levels of safety. This first sketch is of McMicken commons which is one of the most open spaces on campus. Additionally, there is no enclosure from the top which would further limit someone’s viewshed. Furthermore, the space is large but is not too large where someone would be unable to see someone in the distance. Return to Table of Contents Return to Table of Contents
  • 9. 16 17 The second sketch that was used was this one of Mainstreet. Although Mainstreet is often frequented by people, the space can limit one’s viewshed. Not only is the viewshed limited by buildings but it is also limited by the enclosures the buildings create. Additionally, pedestrian traffic is often very heavy. This can make a large space feel crowded and make one feel uncomfortable. The third and final sketch that was used is this one of the Geology Tunnel. The Geology Tunnel is very dark and secluded making anyone who enters feel extremely unsafe. Despite just being dark the space is not very large and is also enclosed by the top. This space is extremely enclosed which limits the viewshed of anyone who enters. Return to Table of Contents Return to Table of Contents
  • 10. 18 19 University of Cincinnati Sensability Map: Safety PLAN 1011 Emily Pietrantone Shilpa Mehta October 12 2018 Legend Most Safe Least Safe Many factors can make a person feel safe.Wether it be how far they can see, the amount of traffic or the lighting in a place. By using a mix of dark red brown and blue it is clear where people feel the most safe on campus. Continuing with the project on safety, I created two sensibility maps to show safety. The first (right) is a hand-drawn map using the same color scale as the previous projects. With the red-brown being the least safe and the light blue representing the safest part of campus. Safety agree t they fe that fee the dar points overlap In thes unsafe. could b not hav of tree area. The second sensibility map was created using Adobe Illustrator. In this map, each viewshed on campus was drawn. The more the viewsheds overlap, the safer the area would be. So, the darker red indicates the safest areas on campus where the light pink is the least safe space. Return to Table of Contents Return to Table of Contents
  • 11. 21 COLLEGE YEAR 1 FOUNDATIONS/BASICS This project was my first use of the program ArcGIS. This map was created by using CODAS to generate data of the University of Cincinnati campus. Each layer had to be manipulated in order for a clear reading of the map. By changing line widths and color the map became much clearer. Return to Table of Contents
  • 12. 22 23 This is a hand drawn figure-ground map of the University of Cincinnati. This map was created by using the ArcGIS map that was generated and shown on the previous page. This map was created by tracing the ArcGIS map with rulers and other precision tools. This is a hand drawn pathways map of the University of Cincinnati. Each different type of pathway is represented by different symbology as shown in the legend. A ‘shared pathway’ is a pathway that is shared between pedestrians and automobiles. • 13. 24 25 In AutoCAD, two maps were generated. This map is a figure-ground map of the University of Cincinnati. In this map, white was used to represent the buildings and black was used to represent the foreground. By making this color choice the buildings stand out less and the map is overall harder to read than a black on white map. In AutoCAD, two maps were generated. • 14. 27 HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATIONAL WORK IN REVIT, AUTOCAD AND SOLIDWORKS During my time at Excel TECC CADD, I also learned several programs including Revit. This page shows my semester final of my senior year in the program. The project was to create a ‘man-cave’ or ‘she-shed’ and include everything we would like in one. The class was given restrictions including how large it could be and a few minimum interior requirements. Since I am always working on something and I love to cook, I made sure mine had a small business nook and a full kitchen. Return to Table of Contents
  • 15. 28 29 Before coming to the University of Cincinnati I was apart of a post- secondary program at my high school called Excel TECC CADD. This program focused on Engineering and Architecture. While I was in this program I had the opportunity to create a prosthetic hand for a recipient in my neighborhood. The hand is completely 3-D printed and works with the bending of the wrist. My recipient Manny lives in a neighboring city to my hometown and was 10 years old at the time of the creation of his hand. He was born without fully developed hand and this hand allowed him to par- ticipate in things he always wanted to. After Manny was awarded with his hand, the design of the hand went to several competitions and even to Germany. The design was awarded first place at the SkillsUSA Ohio competition and then went on to win fifth place at the national SkillsUSA competition. This photo shows former President Obama and the former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel seeing the hand at the largest trade fair in the world that is hosted in Munich, Germany every year. The created of the 3-D printer that was used to make the hand (MakerGear) took the hand to Germany to show how 3-D printers can impact others. Return to Table of Contents Return to Table of Contents
