History of the romance genre from knights to modern day
1. History of romance genre
Romance started off from mythical story’s involving knights and
dragons and was first written in novels the most famous and earliest
romances were Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare in the
1500’s.
It had gone on to make multiple movie versions.Romance is normally
used to show these typical scenarios like love at first sight, teen love,
forbidden love, obsession, passionate love, sacrificing, explosive and
destructive love, and tragedies.
Also tends to end with a happily ever after or a drastic tragedy.
The genre pulls on the audience’s heartstrings and embarks them on
an emotional journey.
In 1896 a 30 second motion picture was made featuring the first kiss
on a motion picture, which was called ‘’the kiss’’ this was frowned
upon because In those times kissing and affection was seen as a
private act and should only be done in private people did not feel
comfortable with it even thought the real first publically shown kiss
was in the theatre before the movie was made or released.
Since then the romantic genre has modernized and kissing and
affection are the main focus and are not frowned upon and the are
very much sexually natured and many are rated for higher ages even
some of the young teen movies have a strong sexual nature which is
in no doubt the total opposite to how the romance film genre was
shown in its early days and this has been a concern for a lot of people
and today is still an on going battle between concerned public
members and production teams of romance films as the is a
confusion between sex and romance.
One of the most romantic and popular romance films of the 20th
century is 500 days of summer and is more of a typical romance than
the more modern day romance “interpretation” also one of the most
famous romance films of the last decade has to be the notebook its
well known world wide and shows all the aspects to make a both
modern and classic romance film it has a wide fan base and has an
amazing story that does not have all the conventions of modern sex
drived film making the film more aspirational and emotional for the
audience to watch it makes people have that sense of romantic
2. fantasy rather than having the ability to accomplish it easily which
