3. Each year the RPDS Advancement Office organizes fundraising events like
CAPERS, encourages gifts to the endowed funds of RPDS and cultivates and
solicits donations to our annual Promise Fund. Our 2015-2016 year was a
unique and exciting one for RPDS Advancement because we added a new
special event fundraiser, the inaugural Daily’s Fit-4-Life Kids Duathlon, in addition
to meeting our usual responsibilities. Our Duathlon chairs, KristianVillano
and Laura Edgecombe, transformed Riverside’s sprawling campus for the
childrens’ run-bike-run competition on Saturday,April 9, 2016. In addition to
great fun and good feelings, we successfully raised a net revenue of $29,655
for need-based financial assistance and campus improvements!
RPDS Coaches Mike Sullivan and Gabe Clark have been teaching children to
live a healthy lifestyle so that they are Fit-4-Life through a creative curriculum
they first wrote in 2011. The RPDS Fit-4-Life program encourages health and
fitness for students and their families through healthy eating habits, daily
exercise, hard work and determination. Now, through the addition of the
Daily’s Fit-4-Life Duathlon, RPDS hopes more children in Jacksonville and in the
surrounding area will be exposed to the lifelong benefits of being Fit-4-Life.
The success of our new Duathlon hinges on enthusiastic business partners
committed to children’s health and wellness. Our Title Sponsor, Daily’s
organized having its St.Vincent’s Hospital mobile health van onsite and they
served coffee, milk and Krispy Kreme donuts to all. DJ, James from
Entertainment and Productions andVerb Fitness encouraged pre-race
warm-up stretching to lively music permeating the campus grounds.

Dollars Raised for RPDS
Over 100 community volunteers generously gave their time to ensure the race was
fun and safe for all.The UNF Panhellenic Society arrived with signs filled with words
of encouragement to cheer for the athletes during the three stages of the race. Our
inaugural duathlon was fortunate to have seasoned volunteers from 1st Place Sports,
the First Coast Kids Triathlon and Open Road Bicycles to help the participants safely
navigate the race course.
Duathlon race day dawned cool and crisp for the 100 Junior (5-9) and 45 Senior
(11-15) participants from the greater Jacksonville community. The contestants made
their way to the start line for Michelle Krueger’s beautiful rendition of the National
Anthem and to stage for the BANG of the starter’s gun. The runners wasted no
time sprinting off for the first leg of the run, bike, run duathlon through the beautiful
and scenic streets of historic Riverside.
It was thrilling to see the excitement on the children's faces as they crossed the
finish line, demonstrating incredible grit and perseverance. Participant zipper-pull
"medals" were given at the finish line to encourage the athletes to display their pride
in the day’s accomplishments year-round on their backpack, jacket or anything with a
zipper.
After the race concluded on the RPDS campus, a celebratory festival and health fair
began. Participants were eager to experience face painters, a bouncy slide and
child-friendly vendor booths from business partners
such as Daily’s,Verb,Wolfson Children’s Hospital,
The First Tee, MOSH and Sign It Quick. Delicious
food was donated by The Corner Bakery. Ice cream
came from Daily’s and popsicles were served by Hit Pop.

RIVERSIDE
REVIEW
2015-16
Helen Keller is credited with saying, "the best and the most beautiful things in life cannot be seen
or even touched … they must be felt with the heart." For most of her life Helen Keller was a
woman without the physical ability to see, so you may be tempted to miss the depth of her
insight. It is not only true that the most beautiful things cannot be seen, it is also true that
the truly impactful and beautiful things need not be seen to appreciate their value.
An RPDS school year is inspirationally adorned with numerous first time events that are
truly impactful. New readers are minted, a child discovers that history is alive, all students
learn a non-native language and explore distant cultures. Each year, children express
themselves artistically, vault physical hurdles and participate in our community as it embraces
the blessing of serving others. Foundational education sets footings for a successful and
independent future of learning. The many facets of an RPDS education foster skills and
character traits that all students share. However, the imagination, life experiences, passions,
interests and personal gifts that each child uses to deploy those shared educational attributes
complete an education that is highly personal. The cornerstone of this high quality
construction is uniquely matched to the individual child.
As you will discover in this year’s annual review, RPDS itself is alive with new events,
curricular initiatives and enhancements, which provide the reassurance that as a school we
are “on the move!” It is my belief that educational communities must continually remain
tuned to the needs of contemporary students, parents and culture. At the same time,
any institution must know and maintain contact with its core beliefs and the bedrock
principles that provide its raison d'être. RPDS adeptly strikes this balance.
We are thankful for each of you and for the role you annually play in our success.
As you reflect on this RPDS year in review and upon those things in life that you
treasure as most beautiful, I trust you will discover much for which to be
thankful. While we certainly must utilize the natural senses at our disposal, we
can also celebrate that without regard for volumes of sensory data points, at the
heart of it all, all is well.

7. The Magic of Riverside
Each August, students and faculty eagerly await their
classroom assignment cards and annual Sundae Monday
celebration. What follows over the next nine months is
the magic of Riverside as children develop intellectually,
emotionally, physically and spiritually.This progression
culminates each year with sixth grade graduates who
are well prepared for future success.
The Board of Trustees strives to develop and execute
strategies to ensure a strong and vibrant school that
fulfills its mission - to educate the mind, nurture the spirit and
foster the development of the whole child - for both current
students and future generations to come.To this end, we
were focused on deepening our outreach within the 37 zip
codes we serve to make our school community more representative of the greater Jacksonville community,
evaluating the facilities required to meet current and future program needs, and preparing for a successful
leadership transition.
The entire school community was focused on reaccreditation by The Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS)
this year. Countless hours were spent preparing for the February site visit. The FCIS report commended RPDS as a
model school and recognized our child-centered, engaging classroom environment that evidenced best practices in
teaching. Additionally noted were our curriculum, faculty collaboration and sense of pride in “The Riverside Way.”
Thank you to the parents, grandparents, volunteers and Riverside Presbyterian Church staff who supported RPDS by
offering their time, talent and resources. Thank you to the Board of Trustees for their support and dedication to our
mission. And lastly, a very special thank you to the incredible faculty, staff and administration who encourage, challenge
and educate the Hearts, Hands and Minds of our children each day.

9. 2016 Bo Cotton Award Honoree
Becky Cox
Congratulations to RPDS Librarian, Becky Cox, recipient of the
2016 Bo Cotton Award.
A long-standing RPDS tradition, this award is presented every
year to one outstanding RPDS faculty member for excellence
in teaching as voted by their peers. The 2016 nod goes to
Mrs. Cox, who has served Riverside Presbyterian Day School
for the past 20 years.
It is difficult to imagine a more enthusiastic advocate for reading
and fostering a life-long love of literature. For more than twenty
years, Becky Cox’s bright smile and cheerful personality have
encouraged students and teachers alike to enter a world alive
with authors, literature and supportive research. The Steve and
Dotty Risley Media Center is a fun and engaging learning space
buzzing with childhood joy and wrapped in Becky’s energetic
personality. Our media center is intentionally not the
stereotypical “quiet please” library! It is continuously changing
and at the same time it spans the past, present and the future
to come. The Media Center is the central heartbeat for the
Riverside educational community and Becky’s tireless efforts
stimulate its pulse.
Becky Cox’s gift for warmly welcoming each child and
matching the perfect book to the student’s current stage of
development is masterful. Becky sees every single RPDS child
each week and she successfully meets the needs of nine grades that serve myriad reading levels. Her rapport with RPDS
students and faculty is rooted in the depth of her caring, which naturally fuels each student reading selection she offers,
as well as the vital curricular support she provides to each teacher.
Becky is recognized by her colleagues for her kindness, compassion and friendly personality. Her exuberance is
contagious. Our youngest students gather enthralled at her feet to hear another book come to life through her
inflections and special voices; we know they sit amid the skill of a master educator and storyteller on full display.
The RPDS family is so very grateful for Mrs. Cox!

10. When thinking of great schools in Florida, names like UF, FSU, and of course, RPDS come to mind. These schools have
much in common, like great faculty and leadership, strong academics, and dedicated parents and students. Now, RPDS has
one more area of similarity, an interscholastic athletics program. In 2015, RPDS joined the North Florida Independent
Schools Athletics Conference (NFISAC) and had a wonderful inaugural season. Unlike phenomenal collegiate athletic
programs where the focus is on multiple National Championships and division titles, RPDS is approaching its program
with a focus on teamwork, skill development, sportsmanship, a love for the sports played and genuine fun.
In the fall of 2015, the fun began with both our boys and girls basketball seasons. The players on each team varied in
experience, yet all players were given equal playing time in each game. This mindset allowed everyone to show
improvement throughout the season. The RPDS community even got in on the excitement and showed its school spirit
by cheering from the sidelines. The girls’ basketball team made it to the championship game and ended its season with a
game winning shot with only seconds left on the clock. The boys had a great season as well, full of ups and downs including
great ball movement and close wins; we even learned lessons through shooting on the wrong basket and “crossing
ourselves up” rather than the other team. Even when our boys came up short in the championship game, our players
walked off the court knowing they had completed a great season and that they had represented RPDS well.

11. In the winter, a new sports season began.Twelve 6th Grade
girls represented RPDS on the volleyball court. Under the
tutelage of RPDS parent and now coach, Sarah Conners, all
the girls were able to learn a great deal about the rules and
techniques of this popular game. The girls had a blast at
practices and their skills improved each week. The season
culminated with two different jamboree style matches
where the girls were able to sport their uniforms and test
their skills against the other schools in the league. It was
amazing to see the progress that was made in their
athletic abilities and many of our girls fell in love with a
sport that will last a lifetime.
Our final sport of the year was flag football. A combination
of sixteen 6th Grade boys and girls made up our team.We
practiced for weeks and weeks in the spring, learning plays
and developing skills in preparation for a double elimination
tournament that took place at the Jaguars practice fields at
Everbank Stadium. When the tournament began at 1:00 in
the afternoon, the sun was out and it was hot.The team
managed to win the first game but lost its second. With a
45 minute break before game three, we were able to
strategize and deliver a motivational speech to the team.
We played the next three games with a lot of focus and
energy, winning all of them to qualify for the championship
game. However, the championship required that we beat an
undefeated team twice to become champions. We managed
to win the first game and earned the opportunity to play a
final game of the evening. This final game was a terrific
seesaw battle that saw RPDS come from behind to win the
championship! It was a day-long, tiring six hours and forty
five minutes of football, but the championship was a fulfilling
way to celebrate the teamwork, selfless play and
camaraderie of a terrific season.
RPDS athletics is in full swing and our first year was a huge
success. Not only did we have a blast with each sport, but
many students learned and developed skills they did not
have previously; many students tried at least one sport they
had never played before. The lessons learned while being
part of a team are now ingrained in our students.
Congratulations to the Class of 2016 for its dedication and
participation in our inaugural athletic seasons!

12. For years, I have integrated music in my classroom instruction. Music has
become an integral part of the learning process; we sing, dance, transition,
build community and teach many concepts in Literacy, Math, Science and even
Handwriting through music. Music is a powerful teaching tool and I use it to
engage, excite and educate children. Early this year, I launched a new after
school academy for PreK 4 and Kindergarten students called Showstoppers.
It was created to expand the use of music with musical theatre in mind. As
you might guess, for most students this was their first experience with
theatre arts. Children learned how to perform, to sing and to dance both
alone and as a group, which are qualities that increase self-confidence and
self-esteem.
My love for teaching and for musical theater was established in the 4th grade.
Kathy Wilsher is one of those teachers you never forget; she is a woman that
inspires, makes learning fun and creates in children a passion for teaching.
Mrs.Wilsher recently retired after captivating countless students for 36 years.
For the last 20 years of her career, Mrs.Wilsher directed and staged an adaptation of the classic children’s story,“Charlotte’s Web.” What else
could I do? Showstoppers simply had to produce Mrs.Wilsher’s version of “Charlotte’s Web!”
This spring, I was honored to carry on the legacy of Mrs.Wilsher’s “Charlotte’s Web” with seventeen of my little Showstoppers. Excitement was
in the air in the Early Learning Center. As it spread down the hall, two more Kindergarten teachers were itching to get involved. Mrs. Rhoden
and Mrs. Sherlock were eager to collaborate with me to create a Maker Space Academy for “Charlotte’s Web.” That academy provided the

13. opportunity for students to participate in the creative design of the set, props and to
act as stagehands; we even discovered a student keen to be a lighting technician.
Each Thursday, for eight weeks, the students in Showstoppers and the ELC Maker Space
academy met to bring “Charlotte’s Web” to life! The show provided more than twenty
five students numerous learning opportunities through musical theater. Many children
had never heard of, read, or watched this beloved children’s story or the classic
musical movie. Once roles were assigned, the children began memorizing lines,
staging, singing a few songs from the original musical and learning how to use a
microphone. Meanwhile, the Maker Space team was busy designing barn doors, the
kitchen window, Charlotte’s web and a county fair set that was complete with a Ferris
wheel and circus tent. In addition to the elaborate set, the children created many of
the props used for the show; we needed an ax for Mr.Arable, a fence for the animals,
a nest for the goose and the words that Charlotte would spin into her web.
Family, friends, RITA students, faculty and staff filled the audience for the live show.
Laughter, fulfilled dreams and a budding love of musical theatre found homes in the
hearts and minds of our Early Learning students. We are looking forward to carrying
on the tradition of both academies at RPDS. Thank you to all who helped make this
little dream a smashing success! Charlotte says,“RPDS is “Some School”!”

18. Riverside’s
REACH
Recognizing & Embracing
All Children’s Hearts
By: Ruthie Simmons
Director of Admission
In 2015 - 2016, we awakened a renewed initiative to increase diversity at Riverside. As a school,
we have a long-standing and an abiding interest in remaining geographically and economically
diverse; however, we are equally committed to ensuring that our children have the opportunity
to be surrounded by others from different cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds as one way to
fulfill the RPDS mission to educate the “whole child.” Rigorous, innovative and transformative
education requires multiple and often competing points of view reflected in the varied
experiences and perspectives found within our school community. It is our experience that
students who attend schools with diverse student populations and a global focus are encour-
aged to develop an appreciation for the perspectives of classmates from different backgrounds.
We also believe that diverse communities foster the skills increasingly required to successfully
navigate our multicultural, multiethnic city and nation. The rigorous, inclusive curriculum and
leadership programs provided by RPDS prepare our students for highly competitive, global
educational opportunities. Our internal “reach” to broaden the RPDS environment is further
expanded by reaching outside of our traditional neighborhoods and spreading the exciting
opportunities at Riverside in new directions. This will mean that as we enter the 2016 – 2017
school year, we energetically will pursue expanding our current “reach” beyond the 37 zip
codes already represented within the RPDS student body.
The 2015-16 academic year was filled with innovative efforts to extend “the
reach” both internally and externally. In concert with the strategic goals set by
the Board of Trustees, we began hosting Diversity Dialogues. The purpose
of these dialogues was to have beneficial, honest conversations and forums
for families to share insights about ways to nurture, as well
as to increase, diversity at Riverside. Many parents,
board members, and faculty joined us for at least
one of these gatherings in the belief that
communication fosters and magnifies the benefits
of a diverse community. We also intentionally hoped
leadership by example would foster diversity goals. All
levels of the school community from
trustees, headmaster, faculty/staff and
across the general school community
16
19. benefit from being proactive in listening, accepting and welcoming a
broad mixture of individuals and ideas. Such guided dialogue provides
additional avenues for RPDS to celebrate its warm, welcoming and
inclusive academic community. Our diversity gatherings generated
inspiring ideas, such as the suggestion that we host an inaugural
Community Gathering of city leaders, which would provide a
platform for our Begin the REACH admission campaign.
Riverside’s REACH initiative is a multi-faceted program to focus our
school investment in Recognizing and Embracing All Children’s
Hearts. Community leaders, church childrens’ ministry directors,
realtors and business leaders from the north Riverside area were
invited to join us to learn more about RPDS and our ongoing
commitment to diversity. As the year progressed, our faculty too
was fully involved in the REACH campaign; to lend additional
emphasis to these efforts RPDS enlisted a relationship with Dr. Jarik
Conrad, an award–winning, nationally recognized author and
motivational speaker to guide our faculty through reading and
productive discussions about diversity.
The future looks bright for RPDS as we continue to strengthen
diversity through hosting continuing diversity dialogues, community
gatherings and dynamic speakers. We will also pursue different
admissions marketing and advertising strategies by centering our
efforts amid those employers and employees located downtown
and in the north Riverside area. We would welcome your support
through initiating invitations into your businesses and/or personal
communities.
Great schools foster deep layers of nurturing goodness and the
building of robust, dependable foundations. As our students, families,
grandparents and alumni discover the various educational layers
provided at Riverside, we trust that they will share with others the
personal reflections they value most. We also encourage each RPDS
supporter to celebrate “the heart of each child” as together we build
the necessary foundations for learning successes. At RPDS we
believe,“The journey begins at Riverside and it is our desire that it
be a journey for all children to experience.”

parody

throughHA!
HA!
HA!
My guess is that it would be hard to find someone who didn’t
repeatedly hear the song ‘Hello’ by Adele on the radio during
the winter of 2015-16.The popular song spent ten consecutive
weeks in the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 list
and became the first musical download to sell over a million digital copies during its debut week.Across the country the hit
piano ballad was stuck on repeat, so not surprisingly it was playing on my way home from RPDS on January 6th. It was during
that exact commute that my 4-year-old son, Maddux, helped kick start my first attempt at marketing through parody.
As the exuberant chorus filled my truck, Maddux announced from the backseat “Daddy, Riverside rhymes with other side!”
The rest of the ride home was spent brainstorming about a music video parody to use during our reenrollment period.Within
two days the idea was pitched to the coaches, lyrics were written and Fit-4-Life Productions was born. Our makeshift sound
recording studio in the attic of the Early Learning Center was where our coaches sang out their vocal track. We spent three
days filming around campus and it’s hard to tell from the video, but the average temperature outside was 29 degrees. I’m sure
when Mr.Wayne used his leaf blower to send a pile of leaves at the coaches faces during the final scene, it only made it that much
colder. Our coaches stayed committed to the project though, and our first spoof video was ready for release in mid-January.
Please forgive me if your child was singing this new version for weeks, or if the song was stuck in your
head too, but that was the point! “Reenroll (at Riverside)” has been our most popular social media
post to date and adding a little humor seemed to create a buzz around campus. Our post to

Facebook organically reached an audience of over 8,000 users from all around
the world. Over 2,250 unique viewers played it through the RPDSVimeo page.
Parents, alumni, faculty, friends, and grandparents all took to our social media
feeds with many shares, likes and comments. The response was overwhelming
for our little school. It was hard to forget to reenroll!
With the success of the reenrollment music video, another parody was created
to help promote Camp Riverside. This summer our camp was themed around
superheroes. The idea was to create a mock movie trailer spoofing the spring
blockbuster of 'Batman v Superman.' Our version had a unique twist that
showcased our coaches in an epic superhero battle for control of summer
camp.We called it 'SuperSullivan v BatClark.' Though it didn’t create quite the
excitement that the music video accomplished, it still achieved over 1,250 views
among the RPDS community. Our movie posters were the largest success of this
campaign. Many were printed and placed at the front desk of the ELC and Main
Office as a reminder to parents of our summer offerings. However, it was hard to
keep them in stock as students kept taking them for their own RPDS
collections. Our students love RPDS and their coaches!
Riverside is a special place and our school is thriving! Our reenrollment for the
2016-17 school year is at 95% and Camp Riverside was full of smiling children that
reached capacity during its first week. My hope was that these parody videos would
serve as a helpful reminder and benefit these events, but the real reason our school
is having so much success in these areas is due to the proven abilities of our amazing
faculty and staff. RPDS is packed with talented people who's hearts are geared to
serve the needs of your children. That wonderful passion and dedication is why we
hope you will remain connected with Riverside for many years to come.

26. THE RPDS FAMILY PARTNERSHIP
Fostering Community
Through the Riverside Parents Association (RPA), RPDS encourages
parents and grandparents to share in the daily educational life of their children and grandchildren.
Opportunities to have lunch together, to serve as a homeroom parent or to chaperone a field trip,
are examples of the myriad ways parent and grandparent volunteers support RPDS on a daily basis.
We are deeply appreciative to all of our volunteers for their strong leadership, and generous investment of time and talent on behalf
of RPDS – such advocacy, participation and generosity make a big difference in the life of our students and the entire Riverside community.
There are a variety of volunteer roles available for all interests, skill sets and levels of availability,
so we hope you will find the right fit for you, or suggest a new way you would like to volunteer.

37. ENDOWED NAMED SCHOLARSHIP Funds
Each year RPDS provides nearly $350,000 in need-based financial assistance to students enrolled at the school. Although this assistance is one way that we assure the
broadest possible access to all aspects of our outstanding educational offerings, each year our funds are exhausted before all documented needs can be met.
The following named funds are instrumental in allowing the school to provide confidential assistance tailored to the documented needs of individual families.
The Riverside Presbyterian Day school endowment is an aggregation of assets invested by school to support the school’s educational mission in perpetuity. Annually, the
RPDS Endowment Fund supports school operations in two prominent ways: 1) providing need-based financial assistance and 2) supporting faculty and curricular development.
All gifts to the Riverside Presbyterian Day School (RPDS) endowment fund are restricted and invested to preserve the corpus of each donation, as well as to ensure that each donor's specific
restrictions are honored. In such investing, it is the revenue produced and the appreciation of the fund as a whole that provide support for the operating budget of RPDS.
ENDOWED NAMED Funds
These funds provide support for innovation within the instructional curriculum, so that it remains consistent with the finest educational practices nationally.
