5. Hi! My name is Elizabeth Caverly and I
am currently a junior at Central
Michigan University, with a major in
Commercial Recreation and Event
Management and a minor in
Hospitality. I am from Brighton,
Michigan and absolutely love my
hometown, but I’m really excited to
graduate and find a job in a big city
like New York, Chicago, or Los
Angeles. Looking down the road, my
dream job is to be apart of the team
that plans the Four Seasons Around the World trip, which
happens once in the spring and once in the fall. It wasn’t until
our event had ended that I knew this was something I wanted
to do for the rest of my life; the feeling I got once we had
successfully executed the event was amazing and something
that I want to get used to.
4
My name is Leterrius Walton. I am a senior at
Central Michigan University majoring in Sports
Management and minoring in Recreation. I
am a student athlete here at CMU, playing a
role on the football team as a three-year
starter. I have dedicated my time volunteering
several times with Special Olympics, the
American Red Cross, and also local senior
citizen homes. With my major, I wish to pursue
a career as an athletic director or facilities
manager at the collegiate level.
My name is Monica Mishakis
and I am pursuing a degree in
Public Relations and minors in
Event Management and
Leadership. I am currently in my
third year at Central Michigan
University. Throughout the
process of planning and hosting
our event, I was mainly
responsible for the operations of
the event. I was the group
member responsible for
securing the venue and securing the band. I was also
responsible for all of the communications between our
venue and the team; this included securing the date, the
time, and the drink and food specials that would help
benefit our charity. I managed finding sponsorships
throughout the entire process and worked on marketing
as well. Some other tasks I was responsible for were
finding the photographer, developing the budget, and
risk management. I was also in charge of communicating
with the t-shirt company and creating the sponsor
slideshow presentation that played throughout the event.
Enduring all of this was a great indicator that I am
pursuing an education in something that I am extremely
passionate about. Ultimately, I aspire to one day be
involved in planning large-scale events, such as music
festivals because it allows me to blend my love for event
planning and music into one.
6. Hi, my name is Holly Saunders. I
am a junior at Central Michigan
University and I am a
Community Recreation major.
For our event, I was able to
make the charity baskets and
also had the opportunity to talk
with the West Midland Family
Center and have them become
our charity. I have worked for
Grand Blanc Parks and
Recreation for eight years and
LOVE my job – I love working with people! Through my
job, I have had the amazing opportunity to help run an
autism day camp and that is one of the most rewarding
experiences of my life. I am excited to graduate from
Central Michigan and start my career!

My name is Elizabeth Diliberti and I am currently a
junior at Central Michigan University. I am
majoring in Commercial Recreation and Event
Management and minoring in Hospitality Service
Administration. In high school, I was very involved
in student council and worked on planning over
150 events a year. In my sophomore year, my
council and I were fortunate enough to be able to
plan the Michigan Student Council State
Conference for over 1,000 students. It was this
opportunity, as well as the multiple smaller events
I worked on, that got me interested in event
management. One of my favorite aspects of event planning is dealing with
the numerous details that go into planning an event. Because of this, one
of my majoring tasks working on A Slice of Splice was thinking about the
details of the event, such as the budget, risk management, and designing
the t-shirts. I was also in charge of formatting all of the assignments.
Another one of my tasks was working on the various publications for the
events, such as: flyers, evaluations, waivers, banners, and this program
book.
In the future, I look forward to graduating from Central Michigan
and stepping out of my comfort zone to grow as an event planner. My
dream job is to work on events at the national level. I also hope to get a
degree in graphic design in the future, as I really enjoyed working on the
publications for this event.
7. The West Midland Family Center (WMFC) was originally built as Greendale Elementary School in the early
1930s. The school closed in 1964 and remained vacant for ten years, leaving the community without a place to
assemble for recreational and social events. In the mid-1970s the community felt the distinct lack of a gathering
place. Phyllis Breedlove, the eventual founder and first Director of the WMFC, suggested that the old, abandoned
elementary school be renovated by community members, for the recreational use of all.
After the transformation from educational facility to community center was complete, the WMFC began offering
night-school classes as well as youth and adult activities. As more and more community members visited the
center, the building became too small for its needs. With the help of a $1.8 million donation, the WMFC built a
new 20,500 square foot facility and purchased a 27-acre park, which featured baseball diamonds, playgrounds,
and basketball courts.
In 2000, the WMFC facility endured another transformation, which nearly doubled the size of the original center.
With this $2.8 million expansion, the center was able to add new classrooms, a computer lab, a second
gymnasium, and an outdoor swimming pool, allowing more room for old and new programs.
Today, the WMFC serves as a non-profit organization for West Midland County. The center receives its funding
from various sources – such as United Way, special grants, and partner agencies – ensuring that it will make the
largest impact possible in the county. The MWFC hopes to improve quality of life for all residents by creating
recreational opportunities, encouraging life-long learning, and strengthening the family unit.

10. To host a benefit concert for Central
Michigan University students, to provide
$300 worth of scholarship funding and
financial support for the children of the
West Midland Family Center.
9
11. We are going to raise $300 to donate to the West Midland Family Center
• We will raise money by getting donations from sponsors
• We will raise money by collecting donations at the entrance of our event
• We will raise money by hosting a silent auction at our event
• We will raise money by charging a fee to participate in our pizza-eating contest
We were able to meet and exceed this goal by raising $900. We accomplished this because we had a donation table at our event, hosted a
silent auction, and charged an entry fee of $7 for the pizza-eating contest. We also asked family and friends for donations, as well as
spectators at the event. The Cabin also offered a drink special and we received $1 from every $3-You-Call-It sold.
We are going to have 125 spectators who attend our benefit concert
• We plan to hand out flyers across campus the week of the event
• We will create a Facebook page that allows us to invite people to the event
• We will post information about the event on Twitter
• We will have Splice promote the event
• We will add the event to the CMU Event Calendar
Based on the number of evaluations returned, we had 80 spectators at our event. However, every participant did not fill out an evaluation, so
we estimated that we had around 150 participants. We could have gotten a more accurate count if we found a better way to encourage
participants to fill the evaluations. We could have improved this number by posting more flyers around campus and advertising the event in
different, more creative ways.
We are going to have 12 items in our silent auction
• We will collect gift cards from restaurants in Mount Pleasant
• We will collect football apparel and merchandise from the Central Michigan University Football Team
• We will collect silent auction objects from some of our sponsors
• We will get gift cards from the Central Michigan University Bookstore
We had a total of 12 baskets in our silent auction. We were able to accomplish this goal by collecting gift cards from restaurants and stores in
the Mount Pleasant area. We also collected several donations from Central Michigan University Athletics. We also supplemented the items
received from sponsors with purchases to make the basket more full. We combined the gift cards and other donations with our purchases, to
create a variety of baskets.
10
12. We are going to have 10 participants in our pizza-eating contest
• We will advertise the contest on flyers around Central Michigan University’s campus
• We will post about the contest on social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter
• We will encourage guests at our event to participate in the pizza-eating contest
• We will encourage people to enter the contest by offering a $50 Visa gift card to the winner
We had 11 participants in our pizza-eating contest. We were able to accomplish this, mostly, by advertising the contest by word-of-mouth. We
did also encourage people to sign-up at the event. We could have gathered more people to participate if we held the contest towards the
middle of our event, when there were more people in attendance, as opposed to having it at the beginning.
We are going to have 10 sponsors
• We will visit stores around the Mount Pleasant area, explain our event and charity, and ask if they would be interested in
sponsoring us
• We will tell them how we will advertise their company or brand during the event
• We will inform them that all donations and profits will be donated to the West Midland Family Center
• We will post flyers about our event around Central Michigan University’s campus and Mount Pleasant with our contact
information on it, so potential sponsors may contact us
We had 20 sponsors for our events. We got these sponsors by contacting businesses, mainly restaurants, around Mount Pleasant and asking
for donations and sponsorships. We also asked for sponsorships from people we already had relationships with, such as CMU Athletics. We
provided flyers to potential sponsors with information about A Slice of Splice, the West Midland Family Center, and ways they could help. This
flyer was an efficient way to inform potential sponsors about our event, and gave them something to look over if they needed time to consider a
potential sponsorship.
We are going to collect 75 clothing items to donate to the West Midland Family Center
• We will set up boxes around Central Michigan University’s campus and Mount Pleasant before the event
• We will have a clothing donation box set up at The Cabin before the event and on the day of the event
• We will donate our own clothing items
• We will ask family members and relatives for clothing items
After further planning, we decided that collecting clothing was not a major focus of ours. We gathered up some clothing items from family and
friends and were still able to donate 87 items of clothing to the West Midland Family Center.

22. We thanked our sponsors in several different ways at our event.
This is a copy of the
table tents. These table
tents were placed on
each table at The Cabin.
This is a copy of the
banner we hung at the
event to promote our
sponsors.
In addition to the table tents and banner, we had a PowerPoint scrolling on a big screen behind the band. This
PowerPoint had the logos of all of our sponsors and was set on a loop for the entire event. Sponsor logos were also on
the back of the t-shirts worn by staff and volunteers at the event.
21
23. Risk: Injury to attendees/performers
Solution: We will create enough space between the stage and the attendees, so there will be no contact that may result in injury. We will
also speak with The Cabin staff to discuss the procedures they have in place in case of injury, as well as let the volunteers know which
staff to contact in case of serious injuries. In case of injury, we will have a first aid kit on hand to use if action needs to be taken.
Risk: Attendee chokes on food or beverage
Solution: We will know the procedures that The Cabin has in place for choking. We will also have someone on hand that is CPR certified.
For the pizza-eating contest, we will have water available to each participant during and after the competition. We will make sure that the
volunteers/staff are easily identified and prepared to dial 9-11 in case of emergency.
Risk: Participant gets sick after participating in the Pizza-Eating Contest
Solution: We will have garbage cans located near the participants in case they are needed. We will offer participants water during and
after the competition. We will have gloves and other cleaning products on hand to clean up any messes.
Risk: Excess alcohol consumption
Solution: Prior to the event, we will speak with The Cabin to review the proper procedures in case of an alcohol related injury. We will also
make sure the bartenders have water readily available to all attendees that are consuming alcohol, as well as make sure that no patron
is over served. We will have the number for a cab company on hand, if it becomes necessary to transport an attendee home. If disorderly
conduct occurs due to excess alcohol consumption, The Cabin staff will be alerted and we will make sure the issue is handled and/or
have the attendee escorted out of the event.
Risk: Attendee/performer destroy/damages property at the venue
Situation: We will use The Cabin’s policies; if anyone destroys/damages property, they will be liable for any resulting costs/fees. We will
also make sure that the equipment is only handled by designated parties. If any attendee continues the destruction/damage, we will
contact the Central Michigan University Police Department to take care of the issue.

This chart is showing that most of our participants, 58%,
thought our event was “fabulously delicious”. 38% thought
the event was “just right”, meaning that the event was
enjoyable, but could still be improved upon.
This chart is showing that most of our participants, 41%,
heard about A Slice of Splice through word of mouth. This
tells us that we did a good job speaking about our event,
but that we should have passed out more flyers around
campus or advertised in additional ways.
This chart shows us that
we put on a successful
event and that most of our
participants would come to
our event again, if we were
to host it.

This chart shows that our participants enjoyed the
atmosphere of the event. This means that we made a
good choice of location. The fact that the pizza-eating
contest is not on the list means that, if we were to hold
this event again, we should either hold the pizza-eating
contest at a different time during the event, or come up
with a different idea.
This chart shows that people would come back for the
music, which means that we made a good choice in
asking Splice to play. People would also come back for
the atmosphere, again showing that we made a good
choice in location.

33. Running our event was one of the most
rewarding experiences – to know that we
were helping the West Midland Family
Center was amazing! For me personally, it
was fun to see how much people liked our
event and how well the band did.
Something we could have done better for
our event was marketing. We used
Facebook and handed our flyers, but we
could have been more creative in getting
people interested. I thought the silent
auction went very well. The silent auction
was one of my biggest jobs to work on;
putting the baskets together and making sure all the items went
together was challenging. In the end, it all worked out because they
all sold for a good price. We had bids on everything and because we
went out and got donations from so many businesses and people,
we were able to raise $900 for the West Midland Family Center.
Our volunteers were spectacular. They were all there on time and
ready to help. We had our volunteers watch over the donation
bucks and the silent auction tables. At our event, we had a pizza-
eating contest, which was a lot of fun, but not many people knew
about it except for our friends. We could have made that part of the
event more known so we could have raised more money through it.
I was lucky to have such amazing group members and an awesome
volunteer group! We all had a blast at the event and I learned so
much from the experience.
32
Designing and executing this event was an
awesome learning experience. I am truly amazed
that, within one semester, our team could
accomplish so much. In the beginning, I was
skeptical because we all seemed to have different
ideas on what we would like our event to be.
However, after a few days we really seemed to
work well together and we began to develop the
idea of a benefit concert and pizza-eating
competition. We chose to host a benefit concert
because we knew that music is something that
applies to both genders in our target market. I feel
that we were able to attract a lot of people to our
event because we hosted it in a popular bar on campus that provided us
with a stage and drink specials. Finding a band to perform was pretty
difficult in the beginning as well, but once I heard Splice play I knew that I
wanted them to perform at our event.
Although finding a band was difficult, finding sponsorships was even
more challenging. I found it to be challenging because we were competing
with other groups for the same businesses around Mount Pleasant. In order
to get donations and sponsorships we developed banners and t-shirts to
provide advertisement for those who chose to donate. Once we secured our
sponsors and donors, it was a relief for me because we finally had a budget
to work with. Developing the t-shirts was also a big life lesson for me. Our t-
shirt sponsor backed out at the last minute, which taught me to always get
things in writing when making an agreement.
The most rewarding part of the experience was watching the entire
event come together and being able to watch everyone having a great time;
I felt really proud looking around the room and seeing all the smiling faces. I
felt that the event was a huge success and I could not be more proud of my
team and I for overcoming our differences and making an amazing event,
while incorporating all of our own personalities.
34. 33
It was very nerve racking when our professor put
us into a group with four other people I didn’t know
and were told we were going to have to plan and
execute a whole event with them. All of us were
very different but it worked out to our benefit
because we all had something special to bring to
the table. My group and I did very well at
communicating, which is a huge part of planning
and putting on an event. With most events you’re
going to run into problems and frustrations, but
you’re also going to have many successes; luckily
for our event, we had more successes than
problems and failures. While I thought a lot of the
stores around town were not going to donate or sponsor us, a lot of the
stores were helpful with donating different items, which made our silent
auction items a big success.
Once we received any silent auction items everyone gave them to
me to hold onto and organize so that they were all in one place, and not
scattered all over. An additional part that I was in charge of was the
volunteers; I kept them updated with everything that was going on prior to
and at the event. One of the marketing pieces that I controlled was our
Facebook page; I created the page and explained what our event was with
details including price, place, costs, specials, prizes, and my contact
information. I also updated the page with pictures of some of the silent
auction items that could be bid on before the day of the event. One of the
biggest problems we had was with our t-shirts and the company we were
getting them through.
Although we got our t-shirts in time for the event, they were not how
we wanted them to look and the cost was much higher than they originally
told us. With the t-shirt troubles behind us, I was very impressed with how
smooth everything went on the day of the event; we arrive at The Cabin with
plenty of time to set up, the pizza-eating contest went great and was very
entertaining to watch, all of our silent auction items were bid on, and
although the band, Splice, was very loud they did an amazing job
performing. All in all, I am so proud of my group and I for pulling off a very
successful event when we didn’t even know each other the first day of class.
After all of the hard work put into our event, I
am able to give feedback on the good and bad
of what we did in our preparation and
execution of the event. Each week our group
was able to meet, discuss, and organize ideas
about our event. This made it very easy for us
to communicate issues that we had prior to
the event and also to help us with organizing
our event. I feel that this was very important in
our success because it made sure everyone
had things to do every day and made sure we
were up to date on everything. Leading up to
the event, we met as a group multiple times to
go over last minute changes and we came across a big problem with our
flyer. After distributing our flyer to the public, we realized that we did not
include the time of our event on them. This was a very big problem
because no one knew what time our event was. This was a mistake
made by the group but we acted very fast about it. After noticing the
error, each of us went around and exchanged flyers already distributed
with our edited flyers and made sure to pass them out the correct flyers
after that.
The most successful thing about our event, that I am very proud
of, is being able to donate more money that we expected to the West
Midland Family Center. Our event turned out to be very successful
because of our silent auction and donations. Reaching out to many
people about out event, made people realize that it was for a good
cause and helped to get donations. This was very important to our
success because it was very difficult to get college students to commit
to coming to an event. Also, our silent auction items were very good. As
a group, we went out to local businesses and got donations from them,
that we used to auction off for our charity.
I believe that our event was very successful because of the hard
work and time put in by each of the members of our group. Everyone
having different schedules made it hard for us but no matter what we
had going on, everyone made time to meet or did work on their own
time which is why I feel that our event was as successful as it was.
35. 34
Working on this event was one of the best things I have done, and
I believe that I will ever do, in my college career. I have learned so
much during my thirteen weeks working on A Slice of Splice and I
am sure that this knowledge will be carried with me for the rest of
my life and career.
In the past I have always been a relatively shy and quiet
person. Something that I learned during this experience is that I
don’t have to be that person – that I am able to step out of my
shell and voice my opinions in a group of people I don’t know well.
This was something I was nervous about, both going into this
project and into the future, but now I feel reassured that I can
speak my mind and that my opinions are important and can make
a difference. Additionally, I learned that I am very interested in the
details of event management. While I did and do enjoy the overall concept of planning
events, I find the details much more interesting and enjoyable to work with. This tells me that
in the future I should focus on the logistics and operations of event management.
Another thing I learned through this experience is that I am very interested in design.
When I first started my college career, I considered graphic design as a major, but decided
that I didn’t want my career focused on design. However, after working on the publications
for A Slice of Splice, I realized that design is truly something that I enjoy and something I
would like to further my knowledge of in the future. These three learning experiences aside, I
believe that the most valuable thing I learned is that I am definitely in the correct field of
study and have chosen the career path that is right for me – I love the long nights, working
with my group members, with the volunteers, and as I said before, with the details.
I think that, as a group, we were able to plan and execute a fabulous event. We were
each able to take our skills and abilities, match them with the group, and create an event
that was uniquely ours, as well as, the groups. I am so proud that we were able to come
together from different backgrounds and do what many of us thought to be nearly
impossible. We raised much more than I expected we would, and I am so honored I was able
to work with this group of people and raise money for a wonderful cause.

35
After 13 weeks of hard work and dedication, we were able to create and execute an incredibly successful event. We are extremely
proud of ourselves and even more proud that we are able to donate $900 to the West Midland Family Center.
