Robinson Crusoe
by
Daniel Defoe
Robinson had been on theisland for 15 yearsand during thistime
henever saw another human being. Oneday on thebeach hesaw
somehuman'sbones. After 23 yearson theisland hefound more
bonesand humansparts. Previously hehad seen afireand 9 naked
savageswhich left theisland with somecanoes. A year later there
wasaterriblestorm and aship waswrecked but thereweren't any
survivorsand later that about 30 savagescameto theisland with 2
prisoners. they killed onebut theother managed to escape.
Robinson saved him and took him to hiscaveand called him Friday
becausehehad saved him on Friday
Robinson taught Friday to speak English
and also tried to teach Friday about
Christianity. They lived happily
toghether for 3 years. Oneday Friday
said hewanted to return to hisown
nation but only if Robinson went with
him so they started building aboat.
When Robinson had been on the island for 27 years more savages
arrived with 2 prisoners so Robinson decided to safe them. Now, at
that time there were 4 people living on the islande and Robinson
wanted to save the other prisoners for living all together on the
islan. 8 days later they saw an english's ship; 8 men arrived on the
beach with 3 prisoners. Robinson and Friday approached the
prisoners and discovered that one of them was the captain of the
ship and the other 2 sailors. Robinson freed the men and they killed
the rebels, so left the island with the english's ship and he arrived in
England 6 month later, after having been away for 35 years.
Robinson Crusoe's novel belongs to the
genre of realistic novel. The story is written
in first person. The style of the narrative is
very matter-of-fact, he generally tells us only
about his actions and what physically
happens to him. Occasionally he reflects on
religious questions. Another interesting
feature is the organization of the story that is
no real novelist plot but isadiary.
Theplacesand timearecarefully described.
Thenovel:
Robinson reflects the characteristics
of the middle class. His creator, Danie
Defoe, wasawriter of modest culture,
born in the middle class, which
contrasted with the decadence and
corruption of the great noble
landowners. Gave voice to the
aspirations of its own economic and
political class.
Themain character:
● A religio us allego ry; in fact there’s the puritan idea about men’s
redemption from sin.
●An eco no mic allego ry; in fact is an allegory of merchant
capitalism.
●An allego ry o f British imperialism; in fact the story demonstrates
that Crusoe, with his superiority about culture, must civilize and
convert savagesto Christianity.
Therearethreeinterpretationsabout
thisnovel:
Robinson asthearchetypeof colonist:
Robinson's education of Friday recalls the processes of modern
colonialism, in fact:
●Robinson giveto Friday anew name
●Robinson cover Friday with him Europeaclothes
●Robinson teachesFriday english
●Robinson teachesFriday also a
new religion
●Robinson never givesFriday a
weapon
