This project, promoted by the Penitentiary Infrastructure and Equipment
Agency, is part of the National Program for the Modernization of the
Spanish Penitentiary System.
Given the special conditions of this kind of buildings, multiple factors
had to be considered : objectives set by the General Penitentiary Law,
high security requirements and procedures, urban and social
integration, innovative and sustainable architecture principles and,
above all, the problems and life conditions of socially excluded people.

Guadalajara (Spain)
The project considers both green building concepts and functional
requirements. This off-grid house is designed according to the specific
features of the site and the severe climatic conditions.
The result of a holistic design is an environmentally integrated building that
saves energy, respects the natural surroundings and makes life comfortable
for the dwellers.
The plot is located in the middle of a
forest oak on a steep slope.

Guadalajara (Spain)
The first step in the design was the analysis of the climate conditions. In this area of the
Iberian Peninsula, winters are cold and dry and summers are extremely hot.
All factors were studied, not only the climatic ones (temperature, solar radiation, cloud
cover, precipitation, wind, humidity) but also landform (elevation, slope, orientation, soil
type, water bodies), features of the surroundings, biological factors (fauna and flora), local
resources, socio-economic settings (customs and traditions), health requirements...

Reduction of heating, cooling and lighting loads through climate-responsive design and conservation practices:
• Optimal use of solar energy: plugging the house into the sun by either passive and active strategies to maximize winter solar
heat gains and minimize them in summer.
• Use of renewable or high-efficiency energy sources (solar water heating, photovoltaic , biomass)
• Window overhangs (designed for this latitude) and operable sunshades
• External wall insulation system and high thermal mass walls to slow heat flow.
• Natural cross ventilation according to prevailing winds and water in movement to increase freshness feeling in summer.
Water and waste management:
• Rainwater collection system to drink and cook (through filtering process), wash clothes, shower and water plants.
• Sanitizing of grey water to reuse it in garden and toilets.
• Composting of organic waste for fertilizing the vegetable garden.
• Black water purification by means of solar energy and plants.
Improvement of the environmental quality:
• Reduction of pollutants for a better indoor air quality, applying healthy building materials and optimizing ventilation.
• Green roofs, with all the benefits that green space provide.
• Ecofriendly and local materials to reduce the environmental impact.
