Environmental &SocialReporting
EMC designed and wrote the ïŹrst integrated report on Environmental and Social
performance for Glenmark India. A unique project where the design and content of the
report was woven around to make the data, interpretation and stories easily communicable
to diversestakeholders.
EMC also provided strategic direction to Glenmark for future CSR initiatives on child health.
This was done by developing Child Health Vulnerability Index (CHVI) for all districts in India
using more than20 keyparametersandfollowing AnalyticalHierarchicalProcess(AHP).
Green City Action Plan (GCAP)for Melaka, Malaysia
GCAP was an initiative under the Asian Development Bankâs (ADB) Program on Green Cities.
EMC prepared a guidance document to ensure effective implementation of various actions
outlined in GCAP. Training programs were conducted in Melaka for government ofïŹcials
across departments equipping them to develop implementable projects under GCAP using a
holistic approach. In 2016, EMC will continue supporting GCAP State of Melaka with ADB
support.
ESDD
EMC conducted a number of Environmental, Health & Safety, Energy and Social Due
Diligence audits (ESDDs) especially in the pharma and healthcare sectors. These ESDDs
were conducted under a Framework Agreement with one of the largest UK based
Development Financing Institutions. A unique aspect of the ESDDs has been the âvalue addâ
approach. This approach led to not just minimization of risks but also identiïŹcation of
interventionsthatcouldimproveon theïŹnancialreturnsand outcomesof theinvestments.
Integrating Waste&ResourceManagement
Waste Management in a 3R perspective is not yet taught at the Universities and in the
Professional world to the extent it needs to be. EMC partnered with GrifïŹth University in
Australia and won a grant from Australia India Council (AIC) against a stiff competition. This
project was operated over a year, interspersed with workshops. It resulted in the creation of
a dynamic website âIntegrated Waste Resources ( ) andhttp://integratedwasteresources.net/
established a network of academicians and practioners. A Toolkit of training resources was
created along with a Guidance manual. EMC and GrifïŹth University plan to write an
extensionproposalfor 2016toescalatetheprojectoutcomes.

3. Making Smart Cities Sustainable
Smart Cities have been recently promoted by the Government of India to meet the increasing
challenges of intense urbanization. Equally important is the need to set up a comprehensive
Environmental & Social Policy Framework (ESPF) to ensure that these smart cities are
sustainable.
EMC developed an ESPF for Indiaâs ïŹrst Smart City, GIFT at Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This ESPF,
ïŹrst of its kind, is expected to serve as a model to follow for other smart cities across
planning &design, constructionand operationphases.
MasterDatabase forGlobal Waste Management Outlook
UNEP International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) undertook the task of
preparing the ïŹrst Global Waste Management Outlook. Dr. Prasad Modak was one of the four
principal authors. EMC assisted in this project by developing a comprehensive Master
Database by pooling and cross checking global statistics on waste generation and resource
consumption. In 2016, IETC proposes to prepare Asia Waste Management Outlook where Dr
Modakand EMCwill beinvolved.
GISbased Rapid ESIA
EMC developed a rapid GIS based regional and cumulative impact assessment methodology
to assess environmental and social impacts of large wind farms. This methodology was
applied to assist one of Worldâs leading wind farm developer at the research stage so as to
ensure that the adverse impacts are addressed upfront and on a proactive basis. The
methodology uses advanced GIS and modelling tools with remotely sensed data meeting
requirements of investorssuchasInternational FinanceCorporation (IFC).
E-Learning
Employee understanding is critical when an organization intends to integrate sustainability
into the business operations. Ekonnect Knowledge Foundation with support from EMC is
creating a unique and ïŹrst of its kind E-learning module on Environmental Awareness &
Management for the Aditya Birla Group. This interactive module using multimedia covers
upto 1 hour of contact time and will be rolled out in 2016 to Corporates on a customized
