Ekocalendar is an awareness tool/ CSR gift developed by Ekonnect Knowledge Foundation. In its third year since inception, Ekocalendar assigns an Environmental theme to each month highlighting significant days with supporting visuals and inspiring quotes.

We rely on a healthy biosphere for our very existence, yet we rarely give
importance to its protection in our daily lives. We need to be prompted into
environmentally-sensitive and socially-responsible behaviour.
Every day useful information and tips related to each theme are provided as
well as suggestions on what can be done at individual, community and
organizational levels.
We need to learn how to live lean. We must consume less, generate minimal
waste and conserve our precious natural resources. To be able to do so, we
require a reminder of our responsibility and commitment to environmental
protection, everyday.
Please follow the suggestions made in the Ekocalendar. By doing so, not only
would we improve our environmental performance but also make a conscious
and valuable effort in making our world a better place to live in….

Break-up of installed
power generation capacity in India
Did you know?
Renewable energy is generated from natural resources such as
sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat; all of which are
renewable or naturally replenished.
Power generation through coal contributes to nearly 70% of green
house gases (GHG) produced in India.
India’s carbon footprint is approximately 1.275 billion tons annually,
making it the 4th largest in producing GHGs worldwide.
Renewable sources in India contribute up to 12% of the total power
installed within the country.

Note: Hydro power is also a form of renewable energy, but it
is accounted for separately. Small hydro power (projects

What you can do
•
Use natural daylight as much as possible.
•
Use ‘focus’ lighting such as table lamps instead of lighting up the entire space.
•
Install solar water heaters in place of electrical geysers.
•
Install small wind turbines, which range in size from 400 Watts to
20 Kilowatts on your roof to power lighting needs.

Did you know?

In the past 100 years, world consumption has grown at a rate
unprecedented in human history..
•
20% of the world’s people living in rich countries account for 86% of total
global consumer spending.
•
Green consumerism refers to purchasing and using eco-friendly products
that do not contribute to or minimize damage to the environment.
•
This involves making informed choices during purchase such as
selecting Energy Star appliances known to consume less power and
using hybrid cars that emit less carbon dioxide, using solar and wind
power to generate electricity and buying locally-grown vegetables and
fruits.

consumer behavior in 65 areas relating to housing,
transportation, food and consumer goods

What you can do
•
Learn more about eco-friendly product options.
•
Choose green products that are less harmful to nature.

What you can do
• Although access to drinking water has improved, according to World Bank estimates,
21% of communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe water.
•
Water is life. It is a precious natural
resource which needs to be used
conservatively.
•
Showers waste more water than
bucket baths. Use a bucket while
bathing and close the tap while
brushing and washing.
•
In restaurants, ask for only as much
water as you need as water remaining
in glasses is thrown away.
•
Remember that the world over people
have to walk miles for water. Do not
abuse the right to water.
• India with 16% of the world's population has only 4% of the fresh water resources.
• In India alone, water-borne diseases cost the economy 73 million working days per
year.
• The average dishwasher uses over 100 litres per cycle.
• It takes up to 5000 litres of water to produce 1kg of rice.

Did you know?
? In India, public spending on health — 0.94% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
in 2004-05 — is among the lowest in the world.
? The World Health Organization's (WHO) International Agency for Research on
Cancer recently declared air pollution as a major cause of cancer.
? Today, worldwide, there is an apparent increase in many infectious diseases,
including some newly-spreading ones (HIV/AIDS, Hantavirus, Hepatitis C, SARS,
etc.). This reflects the combined impacts of rapiddemographic, environmental,
social, technological and other changes in our ways of living.
? As more than 122 million households have no toilets, and 33% lack access to
latrines, over 50% of the population (638 million) defecate in the open.(2008
estimate). Open air defecation leads to the spread of disease and malnutrition
through parasitic and bacterial infections.
What you can do
•
Health is everything. Follow regular monitoring of health as a preventive practice.
•
In offices and work space areas, focus on improving Indoor Air Quality and follow
Ergonomic practices.
•
Eat nutritious food, exercise regularly, keep surroundings outside your home and
office clean and help others improve and protect our environment.

Did you know?
•
5.02% of the total area of India is protected as National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries
and Conservation Reserves
•
India is just 2% of the world land mass but 8% of the world’s biodiversity is found
here. It is one of the 18 mega-diverse nations of the world with 16 diverse types of
forests.
•
The two biodiversity hotspots present in India are the Western Ghats and the East
Himalayan region.
•
Only 1% of India’s vast coastline is protected. The rest is vanishing due to
unplanned development work, fishery and projects like power plants and ports.
•
India is a signatory to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and was host
to the 11th Conference of Parties (CoP) to the Convention at Hyderabad in 2012
•
IUCN's Red list of threatened species released in 2012 has named 132 species as
Critically Endangered from India
What you can do
Just 17 of the world’s 190 or so countries contain 70% of its
biodiversity, earning them the title “megadiverse.” India is one, with
just 2.4% of the land area of the earth, it is home to 7-8% of the
species of the world, including about 91,000 species of animals
and 45,500 species of plants. Of the species that India is home to,
12.6% of mammals, 4.5% of birds, 45.8% of reptiles, 55.8% of
amphibians and 33% of Indian plants are endemic i.e. they are
found nowhere else in the world.

Do not keep wild species as pets - it is a punishable offence!
•
Do not purchase items made of wild animal parts e.g. objects made of ivory, rhino
horn, fur, shells, crocodile skin, feathers etc.

Did you know?
• The global climate is changing as a result of an increase in green house gas
emissions (GHG) since the industrial revolution.
• Today climate change is a grave threat which is caused by emission of GHGs from
our homes, work place, factories, transportation and energy generation.
• Impacts of climate change (IPCC 2004 report) include a decrease in snow cover in
the Himalayas, erratic monsoons, rising sea levels and an increase in the frequency
.

• India is predicted to have increased susceptibility to vector-borne diseases such as
malaria – projected to move to higher latitudes and altitudes.
What you can do
• Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Methane (CH4) are the main greenhouse gases (GHGs)
contributing to global warming. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere has risen from 290 ppm (parts per million) in 1900 to nearly 400 ppm
today. As per the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), the projected
temperature increase worldwide at the end of the 21st Century will range from 0.6 to
4 °C, relative to the end of the 20th Century. The corresponding sea level rise at the
end of the 21st Century relative to the end of the 20th Century will range from 0.18 to
0.59 m.
• Climate change may be a global problem but there are local solutions that include
making low-carbon lifestyle choices: eat local food, use public transport, use energy
saving equipment, practice waste recycling and so on.
• Calculate your personal carbon footprint, learn where and how you can reduce your
footprint by changing your lifestyles.
• Understand that low carbon choices also save you money in the longer run.

urban areas.

Urban housing is short by 18.78 million.

The water and sanitation conditions of India's urban areas is poor; only 70

About 0.1 million tonnes of municipal solid waste is generated in India every day
and only 5 percent of it is composted.

What you can do
•

Did you know?
• India is making strides towards sustainable transport. The 2006 National Urban
Transport Policy (NUTP) promoted “moving people, not vehicles,” and recognized
the need for changes in investments in urban transport.
• In 2009, Ahmedabad launched Janmarg, India's first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)
system, which has an average daily ridership of 132,033 passengers. This system is
a success story to encourage other cities. The concept of BRT is gaining
acceptance as a means to scale up mass transit in Indian cities.
• While a significant portion of transportation funding is still set aside for the
development of urban roads, central policies like the NUTP—coupled with success
stories from cities like Ahmedabad—lend credibility to the idea that investments in
sustainable urban transport should be the way forward for Indian cities.

What you can do
• For longer distances, try to use public transport such as buses or trains which carry
more passengers and thus have less GHG emissions per passenger for the same
distance as compared to private vehicles.
• If using a car is unavoidable, start carpooling with co-workers, family, or friends.
• Follow good driving practices such as maintaining a steady speed, switching off
ignition at traffic signals, inflating tires on a timely basis and carrying out regular
maintenance.
• Retrofit the cars with Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
kit, as these fuels have lower GHG emissions.

AirPollution
Did you know?
•
In India, air pollution is believed to cause 527,700 fatalities a year.
•
The per capita emission levels in India's seven largest cities is at least three times
that of the WHO standards.
•
Emissions from vehicles produce around 70% of the air pollution.
•
Under standard Indian driving conditions, a petrol-vehicle is expected to emit over
800 grams of carbon dioxide per day, just while idling.
•
Traffic areas around schools - where vehicles are often left idling - show
significantly higher pollution levels outside (and inside) their buildings.

What you can do
•
Regularly maintain your vehicle, ensure you have a Pollution UnderCheck (PUC)
certificateand limit engine idling.
•
Surround your living space with plants that improve quality of indoor air.

• India attained national food self-sufficiency 35 years ago yet about 35% of its
population remains food insecure.
• The United Nations children’s fund report that one out of every two children in India in
malnourished
• The Indian National Food Security Act, 2013 (also Right to Food Act), was signed into
law September 12, 2013. It aims to provide subsidized food grains to approx. two

Noise pollution like other pollutants is also a by- product of industrialization,
urbanizations and modern civilization. It has two major sources, viz industrial and
non- industrial.

Noise affects both health and behavior. It can cause annoyance and
aggression, hypertension, high stress levels, tinnitus, hearing loss, sleep
disturbances.
•
Noise pollution is a major problem in India during festivals. The Government of India
has regulations against firecrackers and loudspeakers, but enforcement is
extremely lax.
What you can do
? Try to ensure that social activities such as festivals are not creating additional
noise to cause a nuisance

Singapore Environment Council (SEC) and City Developments Limited (CDL)
launched Eco-Office Project on 5th June 2002. The first phase involved the
distribution of Eco-Office Kits to help companies raise awareness and cultivate
environment-friendly habits within the workplace.
The second phase set up online Eco-Office Rating System to enable offices to
perform a self-audit based on simple metrics, such as corporate environmental
policy and commitment, purchasing practice, waste minimisation measures, level
of recycling, amongst other parameters. The Eco-Office Rating System also forms
the basis on which offices that rate well enough can apply for an Eco-Office Label
More than 100 offices ranging from the property, banking, construction,
pharmaceutical and electronic sectors, among many others, have received the
Eco-Office certification since the programme was launched.
The SEC, which administers the Eco-Office certification, is targeting to add another
100 new offices to the tally; a 100 per cent increase from the current number. CDL
and SEC hope to reach the target in contribution to Singapore's commitment of
reducing carbon emissions by 7-11 percent from BAU (Business as Usual) levels.
