Every teacher is an individual – they each bring their own style, approach, and personal philosophy to the job.Education has traditionally been a profession where each educator spends a great deal of their energy preparing their particular approach to the job – creating lessons, designing assessments, grading work, providing feedback, determining pacing, etc. This doesn’t leave as much time for getting to know how each student is truly progressing, nor how to respond when individual students are not fully benefitting from the experience.
The solution to this, according to the research, is to help give teachers in a district and of the same subject a common lens through which to teach. We have been moving towards this over the years, be it through the adoption of standards and benchmarks, best practices, and district goals. We are ready for the next step now…a truly common approach that will lead to greater student learning. Such a common approach includes common standards, instructional models, curriculum and assessment. The implementation of this will free up teachers to spend less time and energy designing their individual materials and instead refining their efforts to help individual students succeed.
How do we successfully complete our transition towards a more common approach that will reach all students?
Proper support, communication, time and resources must be devoted. Utilizing data and Intervention Watch Lists (RTI), teachers will better be able to understand their students’ progress. This will be supported by technology, curriculum, coaching, p.l. department, BLTs, CLTs, and administration. Teachers and their approach will further be supported by coaches, administration, curriculum dept. and p.l. dept.
