Today, the character of the vampire has
become almost commonplace in modern
popular culture. It is often downplayed as
being just another monster from horror
literature that aims to shock, even despite
the fact that during the 19th
and 20th
centuries vampires have made their way
into all possible mediums and genres of
popular culture. Where vampire literature
originated is also often forgotten, even if it
has to be acknowledged that vampire films
have had a definite impact on the fictive
vampire character during the 20th century.
Even so, the unquestionable roots of the
literary vampire lie in folklore and the so
called 'vampire epidemics' of the 18th
century which plagued Greece and Eastern
Europe, during which there was serious
scientific discussion over the existence of
vampires. The subject of vampires was
picked up by the German Romantics, then
the English, after which the character
spread across European literature of the
time and crossed the Atlantic. Yet even
though there has been ample research into
the subject of early vampire literature and
its connections to vampire folklore, little
research has been done about the vampire
woman in such a context. Especially the
vampire woman of English literature during
the 19th century and her connections to
folklore and cultural stereotypes of “bad
women” are due more attention.
Vampyyrin hahmosta on nykyään tullut
lähes arkipäiväinen modernissa
populaarikulttuurissa. Se niputetaan usein
vähättelevästi vain yhdeksi shokkiarvon
vuoksi käytettäväksi kaunokirjallisuuden
hirviöksi muiden joukossa, siitäkin
huolimatta että vampyyrit ovat 1800-ja
1900-lukujen aikana etsiytyneet kaikkiin
mahdollisiin populaarikulttuurin muotoihin
ja genreihin. Myös vampyyrikirjallisuuden
lähtökohdat unohdetaan usein, siitäkin
huolimatta että myöskään
vampyyrielokuvien keskeistä merkitystä
fiktiivisen vampyyrin kehitykselle 1900-
luvun kuluessa ei voida sivuuttaa. Joka
tapauksessa kirjallisen vampyyrihahmon
juuret ovat selkeästi jäljitettävissä
kansanperinteeseen sekä Kreikkaa ja Etelä-
Eurooppaa 1700-luvulla vaivanneisiin
nk. ”vampyyriepidemioihin”, joiden aikana
olennon olemassaolosta keskusteltiin
vakavasti ajan tieteellisessä diskurssissa.
Saksalaiset romantikot ottivat vampyyrin
aiheekseen, heitä seurasivat englantilaiset,
jonka jälleen hahmo levisi muihin Euroopan
maihin ja Atlantin yli. Huolimatta siitä että
varhaista vampyyrikirjallisuutta ja sen
yhteyksiä kansanperinteen vampyyriin on
tutkittu akateemisesti, vampyyrinaista ei ole
oikeastaan tutkittu samanlaisessa
kontekstissa. Erityisesti 1800-luvun
englantilaisen kirjallisuuden
vampyyrinainen ja sen yhteydet
kansaperinteeseen sekä kulttuurisiin ”huono
nainen”-stereotypioihin ansaitsee osakseen
lisähuomiota.
