Business communication trends and innovations are further taking place through rapidly
advancing technologies creating dramatic changes to cope with the complexities in a global
economy future business communications.
According to Locker and Kienzler’s book: business and administrative communication,
eighth edition (2008), both business and business communications are changing. Ten trends in
business, government, and nonprofit organizations affect business and administrative
communication: technology changes, including information overload and data security versus
privacy; a focus on quality and customers’ needs; entrepreneurship; teamwork; diversity;
globalization and outsourcing; legal and ethical concerns; balancing work and family; job
flexibility; and the rapid rate of change (Trends in Business and Administrative Communication
section, p. 13-14).
Business Communication Tools and Technologies
Organizations are using these following tools and technologies to communicate internally
and externally. Personal digital assistant (PDAs): Hand held devices such as the BlackBerry,
Droid, Inspire, iPhone, or Palm (also known as smartphones), which allows users to
communicate beyond telephone calls through e-mail, file sharing, chat messaging, and text
messaging. These devices are touch screen functional capable of broadcasting video stream and
audio allowing employees to remain connected with companies 24/7. Portable media players:
Hand held devices such as iPods, MP3 players, and cell phones; demonstrate abilities to stream
video and audio. General announcements, meetings, product information, and note taking are
optional for uploading as recordings on these devices assisting employees to remain informed.
Social-networking tools: Software allowing users to share a profile, blog, or useful links
allowing employees to interact with one another personally. Including communicating work

related information, as well as promote inter-departmental collaboration. Telepresence:
Hardware and software for videoconferencing that create lifelike virtual meetings using 50-inch
plasma screens through the use of broadcast-quality cameras. These video meetings can
instantaneously occur across different time zones between nations or organizations. Wikis; an
Internet content knowledge management electronic tool allowing users to post information or
project collaborate.
Managing Business Communication In Daily Work Activities
Business communication greatly helps in maximizing work efficiency for time saving.
Eliminating the time taken to rewrite badly written materials, in redoing projects, and recreating
specialty products. Reducing reading time for easier comprehension and clarity. By ensuring
clarity through questions such as, “Can you repeat that?” Making efforts more effective after
communicating a request for positive and accurate results. Communicating points more clearly
in reducing misunderstandings to lessen mishaps, mistakes, and loss of revenue to maximize
productivity and efficiency safely. Revealing issues of disagreement to resolve in a timely
manner quickly, and encouraging goodwill to be built for a positive image within the
organization. By building an image of a capable, intelligent, knowledgeable person deserving
for a higher position for increase pay and respectable stature.
Trends Witnessed Within The Workplace
The following trends I have witness within the work environment to make good use of
day-to-day for optimal benefit personally and professionally. Personal digital assistant (PDAs),
portable media players such as iPods, MP3 players, cell phones, social-networking tools such as
hotschedules.com, facebook.com, and wikis; an Internet content knowledge management
electronic tool allowing coworkers to post information.

What message types are results of these trends?
Workers are overwhelmed with information overload from all the information available
to them. The amount of e-mail, text messages, chat messages, mail, and voicemails received
daily. Spam cluttering mailboxes when unmonitored forcing e-mail filters to stop some needed
e-mail through accidental deletion. Simply put, spam prevents important e-mail from reaching
its destination to be opened because of recognition issues by email filters.
E-mail abuse from e-mail addicted workers sending too many e-mails from forwarded
jokes to pictures to the website links contribute to information overload. Business
communication trends more often bring a positive message into the workplace versus a negative
message. The pros outweigh the cons!
Conclusion
With a rapid pace in advancing technologies as communication devices continue
emerging to increase business efficiency quickening the facilitation of information between
employees, customers, and business associates throughout the world. Businesses organizations
today confront communication overload-related issues. Newer sophisticated technologies are
expected to emerge to replace its predecessors in helping people to manage the ever-growing
business communication complexities organizations face. People will continue to utilize these
technologies professionally for greater benefit in efficiency within the scope of business. At the
same time, people will use these technologies personally for advantage, convenience,
entertainment, and satisfaction for self gain to benefit.
Technological engagement continues to remain an integral part of any business more so
as of the present time than ever before in remaining competitive. The foundational strategies in
the dynamics of communication technologies have been helping businesses proceed toward a

platform of collaborative management beyond customer-centric management in which all the
engaging players within the business sphere may participate in achieving organizational
objectives defining the terms: performance, profits, and excellence. Business communication
trends importance will continue to be emphasized in society.
