Newsletter November 2010
1. Mexico City. Issue #56. November 2010.
International Education Week (IEW) is an
opportunity to celebrate the benefits of
international education and exchange
worldwide. This joint Initiative of the U.S.
Department of Sate and the U.S.
Department of Education is to promote
programs that prepare Americans for a
global environment and attract future
leaders from abroad to study, learn and
exchange experiences in the Unites States.
This year’s theme is “Striving for a
Sustainable Future” and takes place from
November 15-19 2010.
5 Reasons to celebrate IEW:
• Exchanges are critical to developing
mutual understanding and respect,
building leadership abroad, fostering
an appreciation for the U.S., and
investing in the future relationship
between Americans and people around
the world.
• International Education prepares
students to live, work and compete in
the global economy.
• According to the Open Doors report
(published annually by IIE), the number
of international students increased by
8% to an all-time high of 671,616 in the
2008/09 academic year. This is the
largest percentage increase in
international student enrollments since
1980/81.
• International cooperation on education
contributes to education reform and
education solutions for the U.S. and
other nations.
• International Education Week 2010 is a
chance to embrace the uniqueness of
nations around the world as well as our
similarities and to better understand
how to work together.
