ROOTS relay testing software
Date: April 20, 2012
PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
ROOTS (Relay Object-oriented Test Software)
provides the best solution to the testing of today’s
multifunctional IEDs by performing accurate fault
calculation, sequential test execution, and reporting
automatically. ROOTS is an optional product for
computer-based operation of EuroSMC’s Mentor 12
and TRES relay test sets. ROOTS is developed
using the latest Microsoft .NET® technology and is
available for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP, Vista
and Windows 7 platforms. ROOTS storage files are
self-contained databases where relay data,
characteristics, custom formulas, test routines and
report definitions are saved according to a simple
hierarchy that is flexible and easy to understand.
Relays can be defined as templates by using
equations instead of fixed values for the device’s characteristics and definitions.
Test procedures defined within ROOTS can be directly executed on a connected EuroSMC test set. For a
Mentor 12 equipped with the Smart Test Tools module, the test procedures can also be transferred from
ROOTS to an USB pendrive that can be read and executed by the Mentor 12 with no need of an external
computer. When this ‘offline’ approach is used, results stored
onto the USB pendrive are incorporated later on to ROOTS
databases for reporting.
Relay characteristics can be defined in ROOTS from scratch
or imported from RIO files. Import of relay settings files
created with relay manufacturer’s proprietary management
software is planned for future versions of ROOTS.
PRICING
In order to provide a price-optimized solution, ROOTS can be
purchased with one or more functional modules, which are
priced separately. A module provides protection-specific
functionality. The ‘Distance’ module, for example, provides
specific data entry, characteristic definitions, fault calculation
algorithms and results representation for distance, or
impedance, relays.
NOTICE
Customers can subscribe to not-yet-available ROOTS modules, as a cost-efficient way to enjoy the maximum
program’s functionality available at any time.
ROOTS can be freely installed and used in any number of computers. However, the test can only be conducted
on those test sets identified in the software’s license. No dongle or any other type of hardware key is required.
ROOTS users are covered by EuroSMC’s lifetime update warranty, which provides free, unlimited access to
new releases and software patches of ROOTS and licensed modules.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Program setup
Once installed, the user can select the program’s language among a number of available choices. For the
communication with the test equipment, RS-232 or ETHERNET can be selected and set up using the
Configuration menu.
ROOTS is delivered with no user’s manual. The program is intuitively organized and designed for immediate
comprehension by anyone with basic skills in the electrical protections world. In case you need assistance, the
program’s Help function will display a multi-language guide with all the details related to ROOTS’ operation.
Data management
Using the File menu, the user must create a new database before he or she can add relay definitions and test
routines. One can create as many databases with different names as desired. Each one will be saved in a
separate file. Relays can be transferred and copied between databases along with all their related definitions,
test routines and historical results. Any ROOTS database file can be copied, moved, zipped, e-mailed, renamed
or deleted using common Windows® features.

Device (relay) definition
Definition of a new relay involves
adding a new device entry, entering
the device’s identification and
location data, and activating one or
more protection-specific modules for
the device, such as Distance or
Overcurrent.

As an alternate method to add a
functional module to a defined
device, the user may also import a
RIO file if one is available for it. This
can largely reduce the data entry
process to minor modifications.
Protection module setup
If you need to test more than one protective element (e.g. distance + overcurrent) in a multi-functional relay, you
have to associate the corresponding functional modules to it. Each added module must then be qualified with
the specific relay’s settings and protective characteristics such as zones or curves.
ROOTS features a powerful interactive
graphical editor for geometrical definitions of
protective characteristics and zones. Lines and
curves can be drawn in free hand mode and /
or adjusted using numerical values and
coordinates.

After the characteristics of the
protective element have been
defined, multiple tests can be
attached to the module from a
wide choicei
of test types,
including scheme-oriented tests
like reclosing or CB failure:

The Click Sequence test offers the easiest way to check the relay’s settings against the geometrical
representation of its protective characteristic.
Test points can be interactively clicked right onto the characteristic’s drawing or a number of time-saving tools
can be used to automatically generate series of test points with common parameters like impedance angle or
tolerance-based distance to zone boundaries.

Performing the test
Manual- and automatically generated test points are added to the Test Points list with a “Not yet tested” status.
The calculated fault parameters (voltage, current, phase angle, frequency, tolerances, expected operation time,
etc) are also displayed for each test point. When all the desired points are in the list, the user clicks the Start
button. As the test is sequentially performed with all the points in the list, the results are added to each point and
the status is changed to “Failed” or “Successful”.
The test sequence can be stopped at any time by the operator, and then resumed from the first non-tested
point. The user may also decide to neglect the tested points and restart the entire test from the beginning, or to
repeat the test only for a selection of the points in the list without affecting the other points.

Test settingsii
The default test parameters and method may be modified by the user at any time before performing a new test:
The test settings, the test point list and the test results are saved into the database for each test. Repeating a
complete test with different settings is as easy as making a copy of the test, making the desired changes and
clicking on the Start button.
Hardware configurationii
The default connections between the relay and the test set can also be re-mapped if required by means of the
hardware configuration function:

And some test set features like logical output characteristics and binary activity detection modes can also be
adjusted from here:
Reporting
The user can then determine the composition of the test report by checking the report sections from a menu:
The report can be produced in PDF format or other formats like HTML for publishing.
Reports are saved along with the results in the database, until a new report is produced for the same test.

Standalone testing
The Mentor 12 can be equipped or
upgraded at any time with an optional
component called Smart Test Tools.
Among the advanced test features
provided by this component, the
possibility of executing ROOTS-
originated test batches is possibly the
most outstanding, because it avoids the
connections and preparation overhead
usually associated to an external
computer. Any number of relay entries,
each one containing a batch of different
tests, can be stored onto an USB
pendrive and then read and executed
by the Mentor 12. Furthermore, the
user is allowed to modify the test
settings and even the test points before
running the pre-defined tests.
The results are automatically appended
to each test point and saved back into
the pendrive. Later on, ROOTS will retrieve the complete test records from the pendrive and will associate them
all to the corresponding relays in the original database, for future reference and / or immediate reporting.

RIO import function
Besides being able to read, modify and execute pre-
defined test batches in a pendrive, the Smart Test
Tools can also import a RIO file containing a relay’s
definition and settings. He or she will only need to
add test points by touching the desired area in the
displayed characteristic graphics, and run the test.

New Mentor 12 users are automatically entitled to test ROOTS and the Smart Test Tools during a free trial
period. They automatically receive an email with license data, download links and the appropriate instructions
for getting familiar with the software before deciding to purchase a permanent license.
