Reasons I Should Cite
Sources
There are various reasons to cite
sources:
● Citation tells the readers where
the ideas have come from.
● Proper citation helps you from
taking the rap for someone else’s
bad work.
● Citing sources demonstrates the
research work you have done.
● Citing sources gives your work
credibility.
In this video, you will learn about citations, their purpose, and how to use them.
A “citation” tells your readers that specific material in your work has come from another source. It gives credit to the source and provides the readers information such as:
Authors details.
the title of the work.
the page numbers of the material you are borrowing.
You should always give credit to the original author by citing sources as this will help you in avoiding plagiarism. However, there are various other reasons to cite sources.

Not every source is accurate or factual. Proper citation helps you from taking the rap for someone else’s bad work.

Citing sources gives you credibility.
Various scholarly and professional organizations have developed their ways of citing information. Some of the most commonly used citation styles include the APA (The American Psychological Association) and the MLA (Modern Language Association). Some other citation styles are Turabian, Chicago (published by the University of Chicago), CSE (Council of Science Editors), Harvard, and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
You need to use the citation style appropriate for the field you are writing for. For instance, various social scientists use APA citation style. The reason for this is that the in-text citations include years. For social scientists year the research conducted is important. Similarly, every field has an appropriate citation style that contains important details.
In academic writing, information is cited in two ways: with in-text citations and a bibliographyIn-text citations are citations that are inserted in the text of the paper. They provide information about the source. To avoid plagiarism, you must cite every piece of information that you have obtained from other sources. Bibliographies are called different things based on the citation style you are using. For instance, it is called the Work Cited page in MLA and the References page in APA.
You should always Cite when
you use quotes
you paraphrase
you use an idea of someone else
when you refer to someone else’s work
