FUTURITY CLOSES DEL MAR MEET
The GI Del Mar Futurity brings the curtain down on
the 2013 racing season at the oceanside oval, with a
field of 11 juveniles scheduled to go postward in the
seven-furlong contest this evening. Jaam Racing=s
unbeaten Alberts Hope (Run Away and Hide) is the 7-2
favorite. The bay gelding was a first-out winner at 33-1
odds at Hollywood Park
July 14 and came back to
win the Aug. 4 GII Best Pal
S. at Del Mar as the 5-2
favorite. Trainer Bob
Baffert, who has won a
record 11 Del Mar
Futurities, sends out
Kaleem Shah=s Can the Man
(Into Mischief), who topped
this year=s Barretts May
sale at $320,000. The bay colt captured his debut over
the Del Mar oval Aug. 17 in his only previous trip to the
post. AHe=s a nice little horse and he=s fast,@ Baffert
said. AWe drew the number two hole and I=d have liked
to have had a little better post position, a little further
outside, so he could use his speed more. Sometimes
when you have a speed horse going from 5 1/2 to
seven [furlongs], it=s tough on them when they get
pressured. There are horses in there that are getting
better and better.@ Trainer Jeff Bonde saddled
Saturday=s GI Del Mar Debutante winner She=s a Tiger
(Tale of the Cat) and will look for the Debutante/
Futurity double with Skydreamin (Sky Mesa). The 15-1
shot opened his career with stakes wins at Golden Gate
and Pleasanton and adds blinkers here off a last-of-sixth
effort in the Best Pal. AHe=s as big as a buffalo,@ Bonde
said of the bay colt. AThe other day [in the Best Pal] he
was hollering and screaming at the pony going to the
gate, and through the whole race. They were running
and he was screaming. He came back and worked [6f,
1:12.60] from the gate without a sound. We=ve
checked him out and there=s nothing wrong with him.
So we=ll see what happens.@

CHEVELEY PARK BUY LETHAL FORCE
This year=s G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 July Cup
hero Lethal Force (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) has been
purchased by David and Patricia Thompson=s Cheveley
Park Stud to stand at the Newmarket-based operation
in 2014. Owned by Alan Craddock, the 4-year-old will
remain with trainer Clive Cox for the remainder of this
season and continue to carry the colors of his existing
owner. The Stud=s Managing Director Chris Richardson
told PA Sport, AWe are delighted to have secured such
an imposing and impressive athlete as Lethal Force,
whose many qualities complement our portfolio of
stallions in every way, especially as he is an exciting
alternative outcross whom we look forward to
supporting with our own broodmares. Rated 130 by
Timeform, Lethal Force is the highest-rated sprinter to
retire to stud in recent years, offering British breeders a
wonderful opportunity for their mares.@
CHICQUITA HEADS MAKIN DISPERSAL
This year=s G1 Irish Oaks winner Chicquita (Ire)
(Montjeu {Ire}) will be sold at Goffs November sale as
part of a dispersal by Australian owner/breeder Paul
Makin. Also runner-up in the G1 Prix de Diane, the
3-year-old will be one of 25 horses to be offered by the
Castlebridge Consignment on his behalf under the
Paulyn banner. Also included in the draft, will be a
Galileo (Ire) yearling half-sister to the G1 Epsom Derby
hero Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and broodmares such
as Fleeting Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), in foal to
Galileo. (Cont. p3)

Chicquita Heads Makin Dispersal (cont. from p1)
The Paul Makin dispersal also includes the 14-year-old
Funsie (Fr) (Saumarez {GB}), the dam of another Derby
winner in Authorized (Ire) and also the 2.5-million gns
purchase Hydrogen (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), the highest-
priced yearling at European auction last year. Henry
Beeby, chief executive of Goffs, said, ARarely is such a
superior collection of horses offered for sale at public
auction. It is a privilege and an honour to be appointed
as the auction house of choice for the Paulyn dispersal
and we are absolutely thrilled that Paul Makin has put
his faith in the Goffs team and our unrivalled promotion
and customer care. We have already received a host of
high-class entries for the sale, and now with the
exceptional Paulyn Dispersal as the jewel in the crown,
it truly is a mouth-watering prospect.@ Makin added, AAll
of the Paulyn breeding stock is already in Ireland and by
the time of the sale all of our racing horses, some as
yet unraced as 2-year olds, will be on farms in Ireland,
our consignor is Irish and the Irish Government need a
boost. I love Ireland and I hope this dispersal, without
reserves, will encourage other vendors to come along
for the ride.@ Full details available on www.goffs.com.
The China Horse Club, which has experienced global
success with its runners this year, recently unveiled the
China Equine Cultural Festival, which will take place in
Inner Mongolia Sept. 20 & 21, and will feature the first-
ever live Thoroughbred racing in Mainland China. The
event is expected to attract strong international
support, and is part of an ambitious plan to build the
Thoroughbred industry in that country. The TDN=s
Kelsey Riley sat down with Eden Harrington, General
Manager of the China Horse Club, to discuss the
current operations and future of the China Horse Club.
KR: Can you explain why the China Horse Club was
formed, and what its main goals and objectives are?
EH: The China Horse Club's goal is to become the
premier lifestyle, business and racing club in China. To
achieve this goal we not only need to provide a peerless
service to our members--we need to make a meaningful
and lasting contribution to the industry in China. Core
to the CHC is the successful establishment of a
self-sufficient Thoroughbred industry in Mainland China.
That means a breeding industry, racing industry,
logistics, auctions, horse feed, media, veterinary
services, etc.--a value chain that established jurisdictions
have. To achieve these standards, the CHC has
partnered with leaders of industry in a number of fields.
We are also mindful that an industry needs a lot of
skilled people, and we have set up a scholarship program
that has already seen students work in the industry in
Ireland and France, and in 2014 this will hopefully
expand to Britain, Australia and beyond. Cont.p4

As a club and service provider, we offer our members
a bespoke experience that will not only provide them
with the highest standards of service and amenities,
but will also provide members with the opportunity to
race both locally and internationally. This is quite
unique anywhere in the world. We have international
stables in Australia, France, Singapore and the United
States.
KR: Can you explain how the different syndicates under
the CHC umbrella are differentiated?
EH: Our syndicates are based around the countries and
cities in which we have stables. We have four
international stables: France
(Paris/Chantilly), Singapore,
Australia (Sydney, Melbourne
and Brisbane) and the United
States (New York), and each of
these centers has a slightly
different appeal for different
members of the CHC. We want
to provide a reason for our
members to go and race in cities
that they enjoy going to, and
these cities are among the most
popular cities for our members.
We ensure they have a
wonderful getaway in their city
of choice and enjoy racing their
horses while they are at it.
KR: I understand the CHC has had six winners in four
different countries this year, and the club has also been
active in sales rings around the world, including an
expense of almost A$5-million at the Inglis Easter sale.
Can you describe the club's strategies for sourcing
horses?
EH: We have been delighted with the manner in which
our racing operation has begun. We have had six
individual horses race across four countries and each
has won at least one race. Our program is to be
disciplined and seek opportunities. We have had some
good fortune to date in determining what opportunities
we should take and which ones we should let go. It is
important our members enjoy racing, and winning is
hard to beat. This year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale was
the first sale in which we have bought under our own
banner, but it certainly isn't the first sale we have been
active at. At Easter we purchased some lovely
yearlings, including some high profile ones with our
partners, Coolmore. We remain hopeful they can run up
to their looks.

KR: How does this fit in with the club's announced
intention to import more than i100 million of
bloodstock over the next 10 years?
EH: The announcement that i100 million will be spent
in the next decade is naturally exciting for the
Thoroughbred industry internationally. The focus of this
money will be on breeding stock. China requires quality
foundation mares and stallion prospects. Again, the
intention is to be selective and play to our long term
plan. I would expect this will open opportunities for the
breeding industry in America. There are some wonderful
operations in the U.S. that continue to breed great
racehorses and have very successful breeding
programs.
KR: How many horses-in-training does the CHC
currently own?
EH: Across our racing and breeding divisions we have
an interest in nearly 100 individuals. It is an exciting
space to be in. Our racing team has some lovely young
horses set to race in the next 12 months as well as
some promising older individuals that I think you will
hear more of. Hopefully we will be able to expand our
interests in the U.S. later this season as well. Our U.S.
stable is the newest of our four stables and focuses on
one mare at present called Tabreed [(GB) (Sakhee)].
Tabreed was selected at
the Arqana Sale in December
by our French trainer Nicolas
Clement to race in the U.S.
under the care of his
brother, Christophe. Tabreed
is a winner and is stakes
placed. She is possibly
unlucky not to have won
more than once under
Christophe's care. In time
she will be an important
addition to our breeding
program.
KR: How is the CHC governed?
EH: The China Horse Club is managed by international
staff that have experience in a range of fields. Many of
the senior staff were heavily involved in the highly
successful Meydan grandstand project. Assisting in the
management of the China Horse Club is an elite
advisory board. This >council of peers= are leaders of
industry from many fields, and we are very fortunate to
have these esteemed individuals involved in our club.
The makeup of this board has not yet been publicly
announced, but that will happen very soon.

KR: The CHC recently announced that it will host two
days of live racing at the China Equine Cultural Festival
in Inner Mongolia, which takes place Sept. 20 & 21.
Can you describe for our readers what the China Equine
Cultural Festival is?
EH: The CECF is a celebration of Thoroughbred racing
in Mainland China. It is also the first internationally
endorsed Thoroughbred event in this part of the world.
Aside from international participation from breeders,
owners, jockeys, sponsors and support from fellow
Jockey Clubs over a two-day festival, there will be a
wonderful blend of local and international dignitaries.
There will also be invited speakers at an International
Symposium. His Excellency Professor Joseph Deiss, the
former President of the United Nations General
Assembly, heads a list of VIPs who will be present. In
time we hope to build the profile of this event, and it
would be wonderful to have participation from
American vendors, jockeys, trainers and administrators,
and possibly a guest speaker next year or in the near
future. The U.S. has a great deal to offer.
KR: How will the club's operations and objectives
change when racing commences in Mainland China?
EH: Our objectives are long term and take into account
2014 and beyond. Next year is the Year of the Horse,
and so it will be very significant in China for the CHC.
There will be some significant and very exciting
announcements on this in due course.
KR: Are there any plans for live racing dates in
Mainland China beyond the China Equine Cultural
Festival?
EH: The CECF will be the first exhibition race the CHC
is involved with, and we are honored that the Hohhot
Sports Bureau is hosting this event. It is our intention to
race more regularly in 2014 and beyond.

THE GERMAN INDUSTRY: SMALL BUT MIGHTY
Liesl King has been filling you in with maximum
efficiency and her usual flair for fashion about the
sales, races, and other social activities last weekend in
Baden-Baden, which is gaining a reputation in racing
circles as >the Deauville of Germany.= Certainly the sale,
the latest edition of which was last Friday, just gets
better and better, with more and more buyers from
outside Germany. Seven yearlings sold for i200,000 or
more, five of which went to foreign buyers, plus two
Dansili colts bought for German owners. Emmanuel de
Seroux=s Narvick International (for Japan); Darley
(which bought seven total through their English-based
German representative, Franziska Schaertlin Coffey);
Angus Gold, (for Shadwell) were high on the buyers
list, along with Freddy Seitz of Brookdale Farm in
Kentucky, who signed for two, including an i260,000
Montjeu filly. Overall, with 19 fewer yearlings
catalogued and 20 fewer sold (-12%), the gross
showed a 26% increase, and the average jumped a
massive 44% to i47,983.
The success of German-breds, and German families,
hardly needs advertising after their exploits of the last
few years. Danedream (Lomitas) of course burst into
prominence when scoring in the 2011 G1 Prix de l=Arc
de Triomphe. She then came back to win the 2012
G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot,
defeating Nathaniel in a good battle, and added a
second win in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden, but was
prevented from defending her >Arc= title by a disease
outbreak and subsequent quarantine of her training
grounds in Cologne. In what proved to be her final race
in last year=s GP von Baden, she defeated Germany=s
then-two top 3-year-old colts, Pastorius (Soldier
Hollow) and Novellist (Monsun), who finished third and
fourth. Both colts came back this year to win Group 1
races in France: Pastorius won the G1 Prix Ganay, but
came back after a fruitless trip to Singapore to finish
down the field in the G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown, and is
now on the shelf with an injury. Novellist, meantime,
won the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, then ran a
lifetime best for a second consecutive impressive
German win in the >King George.= Like Danedream, he
followed up last weekend in Sunday=s edition of the G1
Grosser Preis von Baden as his Arc prep, and is now
general co-favorite, along with the Fabre-trained likely
G2 Prix Niel-bound Flintshire (Dansili), or second
favorite. It=s a pretty impressive roll of honor over the
last 24 months.
But the German racing brand has a problem, and,
unusually, the problem is not quality, but quantity.
There aren=t enough of them. German foal crop
numbers are in decline--down a third since 2008, and
not really because of the Meltdown.
Cont. p8
TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 9/4/13 • PAGE 8 of 11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
Costs, as everywhere, are high, and returns on the
German racetracks are low. Smaller breeders have been
getting out, and even the big owner-breeders who are
the backbone of the German industry have been cutting
back as the risk-return ratios have
worsened. Until last Friday=s sale
those breeders who could be
identified as >commercial= were
working against revenues averaging
in the i30,000 range at their
flagship sale. The only way German
owner-breeders have been able to
make it pay is by selling their best
stock as it develops. Markets as
diverse as Australia, Japan and America, as well as the
major European operations, are keen to buy
German-breds. With a collective foal crop which was
small enough to start with and has been shrinking, the
top German breeders can see that it won=t take long to
kill the goose that laid the golden egg--especially when
they sell the good fillies from those top German
families.
If they need to see any examples of what happens
when a country sells off their top pedigrees, they need
only look at what=s happened in America. For over 30
years American breeders have been selling to the
Maktoums, to the Japanese (especially during the
market crash of the late 1980s and after 2008), and to
anybody else prepared to compete at that level,
spending big money for the best available stock. Now
international buyers stay away from the American sales
in droves, because they don=t know the sires and don=t
understand the pedigrees. They say it=s because of
drugs, but that=s actually a secondary issue, and a
convenient excuse. The real reason is because, on the
whole, they don=t understand the pedigrees any more,
and they don=t need to try and understand them,
because the sires in Europe are so good. It=s probably a
mistake, because American-breds in Europe punch well
above their weight in terms of numbers, but it doesn=t
matter as much to European buyers when you see there
are 47 yearlings by Galileo in Tattersalls= October Sale

“In 2008, Doncaster’s Premier Yearling Sale saw 401 horses sell for just under

£13.3-million and averaged £32,441, with a monumental 86% clearance rate

One thing about being smaller to start with is it can
be easier to reverse the trend of declining numbers--a
little bit can go a long way--and there are several moves
afoot in Germany, both short- and long-term, which
could result in the creation of more German-breds, both
from the old, established families, and from new ones
which could be developed if there were more breeders
with commercially justifiable reasons to invest. I can=t
emphasize enough how different a program it is to
create quantity from quality than to try and create
quality from quantity. They have a real basis on which
to grow. Maybe there are only eight or 10 major
breeders in Germany, but the traditions of their
involvement routinely go back three to five generations
in their families--that=s the human families as well as
the horses. There are good indications that this central
corps of top breeders realize that only by joining
together to reinforce existing structures, and creating
new ones can they lay the groundwork for the >Made in
Germany= racing brand to grow and expand. It=s an
ironic twist that they already have all the international
recognition and demand they need. It is their domestic
market which is in desperate need of development.
They need more domestic racehorse owners, to create
domestic demand so that breeders can justify expanding
their numbers. It=s a big project in a country with a great
equestrian tradition, but little recognition of horse racing
by the vast majority of the German public. Cont. p10

But German breeders have the raw material to build
from, and if the big owner-breeders--
because it actually does all depend
on them--can muster the political
will, and find the time and the people
to help implement the plans which
must be drawn up and financed--
there is a chance they can reverse
the decline in the foal crop, and
enhance the chances of the
German-bred horse racing brand to
first, sustain itself, and, second,
grow.

list of all Book 2 sires). The vast majority of Book 1
sires have more representation in Week 2, plus a lot
more besides. (List of stallions with 45+ catalogued p11)
Five sires have 50 or more catalogued in the second
week, headed by WinStar=s Congrats, with 65, and
Coolmore=s (nee Ashford=s) Henrythenavigator, with 63.
Each has 10 catalogued for Week 1, and therefore are
among five sires with 70 or more yearlings catalogued
throughout the sale. These yearlings are from
Congrats=s first Kentucky crop since moving up from
Florida. He stood in 2011 at Vinery for a $15,000 fee.
>Henry,= who made the switch from Kentucky to Ireland
this year, is the only second-crop sire with three
Grade I/Group 1 winners, after the 2-year-old colt
Sudirman upset War Command in the G1 Phoenix S.
last month. Also with 50+ catalogued in the second
week are: WinStar=s 2010 G1 Kentucky Derby winner,
Super Saver (57, plus four in Book 1); Lane=s End=s
high-class sire Candy Ride (55); and Three Chimneys=
Sky Mesa (50, plus six), now fully recovered from a
stuttering start back in 2007. Candy Ride, with 24 in
Book 1, is one of the five with 70+ catalogued for the
whole sale--he has 79--along with Congrats and
Henrythenavigator.
The overall leader in yearlings catalogued is
Spendthrift=s Malibu Moon, currently number three on
the TDN North American 2013 General Sire List. He has
87 catalogued, of which 38 are in Week 2. Ashford=s
Giant=s Causeway, number four on the North American
list, as usual is in the top five by number catalogued,
with 74.
Finally, big thank-yous and bouquets to Ben Fondrian,
CEO, and Peter Muhlfeit, who is in charge of PR and
the press room at the Baden-Baden racetrack. The
international team which came in to cover the weekend
included our own Liesl King, who as I mentioned above
did heroic work throughout; ex-TDN staffer Marie
Kizenko; Isabel Mathew, from TurfCom in France;
Katherine Fidler of Britain=s Racing Post; and the
Breeders= Cup=s Josh Christian. I know Josh particularly
wanted to thank Sebastian Weiss for showing him the
ropes.

and Robert Tiller. The youngster, out of the unraced
Good Religion (Giant=s Causeway), was consigned by

T.I.P. Award Recipients Announced:
The Jockey Club=s Thoroughbred Incentive Program
has chosen the winners of the Thoroughbred of the
Year Award and Young Rider of the Year Award, its
non-competition awards.
The Thoroughbred of the Year Award is given to a
Thoroughbred that has been successful in a non-
competitive career. This year=s recipient is Loveable
Rascal, an 11-year-old therapy horse at Fieldstone Farm
in Ohio.
Loveable Rascal, bred by Airdire Stud, launched his
career as a talented hunter jumper upon leaving the
racetrack. He retired from that job six years ago due to
injury and began a new start as a therapy horse.
ARascal is one of those horses that not only knows he
is helping riders, he wants to,@ said Jinene Studinski,
Equine Director at Fieldstone Farm. AThrough Rascal=s
generous heart and instinct to serve, children with
autism and Down Syndrome have said their first words.
Adults with multiple sclerosis and children with
neurological disorders have improved balance and
gained strength. Some have even taken their first steps
after riding him. High school students and military
veterans have found hope and strength. Rascal is an
amazing horse that reaches people of all ages and with
all kinds of challenges and helps them become stronger
physically and emotionally so they can better cope with
daily life.@
The Young Rider of the Year Award is presented to a
rider age 18 or under who owns or leases a
Thoroughbred for 4H, Pony Club, or other similar
activities. This year there were four recipients.
Chloe Bellerive owns Lemon Twister, who raced just
four times. Together they compete in 4H, FFA, and are
ambassadors for the breed and their T.I.P. earning will
go to further that goal.
AEverywhere we go, after I exit the rings, someone
always asks me about his breeding, and I very proudly
state he is a Thoroughbred and an ex-racehorse that I
was very lucky to find,@ said Bellerive.
Madison Shaughnessy adopted her horse MissGuided
from a local horse rescue where she volunteered. She
will use her T.I.P. money towards college.
Natalie Roberts owns Comcord, who was quite
difficult in the beginning, which inspired her to go to
Vet school.
ACece was a very difficult horse when she first came
off the track; however, many of her behavioral issues
were caused by physical pain related to management
practices that were easily corrected,@ said Roberts.
The final recipient is Annise Montplaisir, who was
introduced to Cyclone Larry when working as a
Racehorse Ambassador at the North Dakota Horse Park.
She also intends to use her award money towards her
education.

  • 1. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2013 732-747-8060 $ TDN Home Page Click Here FUTURITY CLOSES DEL MAR MEET The GI Del Mar Futurity brings the curtain down on the 2013 racing season at the oceanside oval, with a field of 11 juveniles scheduled to go postward in the seven-furlong contest this evening. Jaam Racing=s unbeaten Alberts Hope (Run Away and Hide) is the 7-2 favorite. The bay gelding was a first-out winner at 33-1 odds at Hollywood Park July 14 and came back to win the Aug. 4 GII Best Pal S. at Del Mar as the 5-2 favorite. Trainer Bob Baffert, who has won a record 11 Del Mar Futurities, sends out Kaleem Shah=s Can the Man (Into Mischief), who topped this year=s Barretts May sale at $320,000. The bay colt captured his debut over the Del Mar oval Aug. 17 in his only previous trip to the post. AHe=s a nice little horse and he=s fast,@ Baffert said. AWe drew the number two hole and I=d have liked to have had a little better post position, a little further outside, so he could use his speed more. Sometimes when you have a speed horse going from 5 1/2 to seven [furlongs], it=s tough on them when they get pressured. There are horses in there that are getting better and better.@ Trainer Jeff Bonde saddled Saturday=s GI Del Mar Debutante winner She=s a Tiger (Tale of the Cat) and will look for the Debutante/ Futurity double with Skydreamin (Sky Mesa). The 15-1 shot opened his career with stakes wins at Golden Gate and Pleasanton and adds blinkers here off a last-of-sixth effort in the Best Pal. AHe=s as big as a buffalo,@ Bonde said of the bay colt. AThe other day [in the Best Pal] he was hollering and screaming at the pony going to the gate, and through the whole race. They were running and he was screaming. He came back and worked [6f, 1:12.60] from the gate without a sound. We=ve checked him out and there=s nothing wrong with him. So we=ll see what happens.@ Wednesday, Del Mar, post time: 8:40 p.m. EDT DEL MAR FUTURITY-GI, $300,000, 2yo, 7f (AWT) PP HORSE SIRE JOCKEY TRAINER ML 1 Skydreamin K Sky Mesa Delgadillo Bonde 15-1 2 Can the Man K Into Mischief Garcia Baffert 9-2 3 Dance With Fate Two Step Salsa Bejarano Eurton 8-1 4 Celtic Moon Denis of Cork Gomez Miller 5-1 5 Alberts Hope K Run Away and Hide Quinonez Puype 7-2 6 Alpine Luck Lucky J. Owned by Alan Craddock, the 4-year-old will remain with trainer Clive Cox for the remainder of this season and continue to carry the colors of his existing owner. The Stud=s Managing Director Chris Richardson told PA Sport, AWe are delighted to have secured such an imposing and impressive athlete as Lethal Force, whose many qualities complement our portfolio of stallions in every way, especially as he is an exciting alternative outcross whom we look forward to supporting with our own broodmares. Rated 130 by Timeform, Lethal Force is the highest-rated sprinter to retire to stud in recent years, offering British breeders a wonderful opportunity for their mares.@ CHICQUITA HEADS MAKIN DISPERSAL This year=s G1 Irish Oaks winner Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) will be sold at Goffs November sale as part of a dispersal by Australian owner/breeder Paul Makin. Also runner-up in the G1 Prix de Diane, the 3-year-old will be one of 25 horses to be offered by the Castlebridge Consignment on his behalf under the Paulyn banner. Also included in the draft, will be a Galileo (Ire) yearling half-sister to the G1 Epsom Derby hero Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and broodmares such as Fleeting Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), in foal to Galileo. Henry Beeby, chief executive of Goffs, said, ARarely is such a superior collection of horses offered for sale at public auction. It is a privilege and an honour to be appointed as the auction house of choice for the Paulyn dispersal and we are absolutely thrilled that Paul Makin has put his faith in the Goffs team and our unrivalled promotion and customer care. We have already received a host of high-class entries for the sale, and now with the exceptional Paulyn Dispersal as the jewel in the crown, it truly is a mouth-watering prospect.@ Makin added, AAll of the Paulyn breeding stock is already in Ireland and by the time of the sale all of our racing horses, some as yet unraced as 2-year olds, will be on farms in Ireland, our consignor is Irish and the Irish Government need a boost. I love Ireland and I hope this dispersal, without reserves, will encourage other vendors to come along for the ride.@ Full details available on www.goffs.com. The China Horse Club, which has experienced global success with its runners this year, recently unveiled the China Equine Cultural Festival, which will take place in Inner Mongolia Sept. 20 & 21, and will feature the first- ever live Thoroughbred racing in Mainland China. The event is expected to attract strong international support, and is part of an ambitious plan to build the Thoroughbred industry in that country. The TDN=s Kelsey Riley sat down with Eden Harrington, General Manager of the China Horse Club, to discuss the current operations and future of the China Horse Club. KR: Can you explain why the China Horse Club was formed, and what its main goals and objectives are? EH: The China Horse Club's goal is to become the premier lifestyle, business and racing club in China. To achieve this goal we not only need to provide a peerless service to our members--we need to make a meaningful and lasting contribution to the industry in China. Core to the CHC is the successful establishment of a self-sufficient Thoroughbred industry in Mainland China. That means a breeding industry, racing industry, logistics, auctions, horse feed, media, veterinary services, etc.--a value chain that established jurisdictions have. To achieve these standards, the CHC has partnered with leaders of industry in a number of fields. We are also mindful that an industry needs a lot of skilled people, and we have set up a scholarship program that has already seen students work in the industry in Ireland and France, and in 2014 this will hopefully expand to Britain, Australia and beyond. • 5. TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 9/4/13 • PAGE 4 of 11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com As a club and service provider, we offer our members a bespoke experience that will not only provide them with the highest standards of service and amenities, but will also provide members with the opportunity to race both locally and internationally. This is quite unique anywhere in the world. We have international stables in Australia, France, Singapore and the United States. KR: Can you explain how the different syndicates under the CHC umbrella are differentiated? EH: Our syndicates are based around the countries and cities in which we have stables. We have four international stables: France (Paris/Chantilly), Singapore, Australia (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) and the United States (New York), and each of these centers has a slightly different appeal for different members of the CHC. We want to provide a reason for our members to go and race in cities that they enjoy going to, and these cities are among the most popular cities for our members. We ensure they have a wonderful getaway in their city of choice and enjoy racing their horses while they are at it. KR: I understand the CHC has had six winners in four different countries this year, and the club has also been active in sales rings around the world, including an expense of almost A$5-million at the Inglis Easter sale. Can you describe the club's strategies for sourcing horses? EH: We have been delighted with the manner in which our racing operation has begun. We have had six individual horses race across four countries and each has won at least one race. Our program is to be disciplined and seek opportunities. We have had some good fortune to date in determining what opportunities we should take and which ones we should let go. It is important our members enjoy racing, and winning is hard to beat. This year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale was the first sale in which we have bought under our own banner, but it certainly isn't the first sale we have been active at. At Easter we purchased some lovely yearlings, including some high profile ones with our partners, Coolmore. We remain hopeful they can run up to their looks. • 7. TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 9/4/13 • PAGE 5 of 11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com KR: How does this fit in with the club's announced intention to import more than i100 million of bloodstock over the next 10 years? EH: The announcement that i100 million will be spent in the next decade is naturally exciting for the Thoroughbred industry internationally. The focus of this money will be on breeding stock. China requires quality foundation mares and stallion prospects. Again, the intention is to be selective and play to our long term plan. I would expect this will open opportunities for the breeding industry in America. There are some wonderful operations in the U.S. that continue to breed great racehorses and have very successful breeding programs. KR: How many horses-in-training does the CHC currently own? EH: Across our racing and breeding divisions we have an interest in nearly 100 individuals. It is an exciting space to be in. Our racing team has some lovely young horses set to race in the next 12 months as well as some promising older individuals that I think you will hear more of. Hopefully we will be able to expand our interests in the U.S. later this season as well. Our U.S. stable is the newest of our four stables and focuses on one mare at present called Tabreed [(GB) (Sakhee)]. Tabreed was selected at the Arqana Sale in December by our French trainer Nicolas Clement to race in the U.S. under the care of his brother, Christophe. Tabreed is a winner and is stakes placed. She is possibly unlucky not to have won more than once under Christophe's care. In time she will be an important addition to our breeding program. KR: How is the CHC governed? EH: The China Horse Club is managed by international staff that have experience in a range of fields. Many of the senior staff were heavily involved in the highly successful Meydan grandstand project. Assisting in the management of the China Horse Club is an elite advisory board. This >council of peers= are leaders of industry from many fields, and we are very fortunate to have these esteemed individuals involved in our club. The makeup of this board has not yet been publicly announced, but that will happen very soon. Cont. p6 Tabreed winning at Monmouth June 29

Can you describe for our readers what the China Equine Cultural Festival is? EH: The CECF is a celebration of Thoroughbred racing in Mainland China. It is also the first internationally endorsed Thoroughbred event in this part of the world. Aside from international participation from breeders, owners, jockeys, sponsors and support from fellow Jockey Clubs over a two-day festival, there will be a wonderful blend of local and international dignitaries. There will also be invited speakers at an International Symposium. His Excellency Professor Joseph Deiss, the former President of the United Nations General Assembly, heads a list of VIPs who will be present. There will be some significant and very exciting announcements on this in due course. KR: Are there any plans for live racing dates in Mainland China beyond the China Equine Cultural Festival? EH: The CECF will be the first exhibition race the CHC is involved with, and we are honored that the Hohhot Sports Bureau is hosting this event. It is our intention to race more regularly in 2014 and beyond. SARATOGA FIGURES DECLINE Handle and attendance both declined during the 2013 Saratoga meeting which concluded Monday, according to figures released Tuesday by the New York Racing Association. All-sources handle for the meet was $586,685,154--a decrease of 0.3% from 2012. On- track handle totaled $147,456,901, down 2.1% from a year ago. Attendance for the meet fell 3.9% to 867,182. The average betting interests per race for the meet were 8.1 (3,383 total over 420 races), compared to 8.4 (3,492 total over 417 races) in 2012. There were 200 turf races and 24 races taken off the turf and moved to the main track in 2013, compared to 197 on and 27 off in 2012. • 9. TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 9/4/13 • PAGE 7 of 11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com THE GERMAN INDUSTRY: SMALL BUT MIGHTY Liesl King has been filling you in with maximum efficiency and her usual flair for fashion about the sales, races, and other social activities last weekend in Baden-Baden, which is gaining a reputation in racing circles as >the Deauville of Germany.= Certainly the sale, the latest edition of which was last Friday, just gets better and better, with more and more buyers from outside Germany. Seven yearlings sold for i200,000 or more, five of which went to foreign buyers, plus two Dansili colts bought for German owners. Emmanuel de Seroux=s Narvick International (for Japan); Darley (which bought seven total through their English-based German representative, Franziska Schaertlin Coffey); Angus Gold, (for Shadwell) were high on the buyers list, along with Freddy Seitz of Brookdale Farm in Kentucky, who signed for two, including an i260,000 Montjeu filly. Overall, with 19 fewer yearlings catalogued and 20 fewer sold (-12%), the gross showed a 26% increase, and the average jumped a massive 44% to i47,983. The success of German-breds, and German families, hardly needs advertising after their exploits of the last few years. Danedream (Lomitas) of course burst into prominence when scoring in the 2011 G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe. She then came back to win the 2012 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot, defeating Nathaniel in a good battle, and added a second win in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden, but was prevented from defending her >Arc= title by a disease outbreak and subsequent quarantine of her training grounds in Cologne. In what proved to be her final race in last year=s GP von Baden, she defeated Germany=s then-two top 3-year-old colts, Pastorius (Soldier Hollow) and Novellist (Monsun), who finished third and fourth. Both colts came back this year to win Group 1 races in France: Pastorius won the G1 Prix Ganay, but came back after a fruitless trip to Singapore to finish down the field in the G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown, and is now on the shelf with an injury. Novellist, meantime, won the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, then ran a lifetime best for a second consecutive impressive German win in the >King George.= Like Danedream, he followed up last weekend in Sunday=s edition of the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden as his Arc prep, and is now general co-favorite, along with the Fabre-trained likely G2 Prix Niel-bound Flintshire (Dansili), or second favorite. It=s a pretty impressive roll of honor over the last 24 months. But the German racing brand has a problem, and, unusually, the problem is not quality, but quantity. There aren=t enough of them. German foal crop numbers are in decline--down a third since 2008, and not really because of the Meltdown. Cont. p8
  • 10. TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 9/4/13 • PAGE 8 of 11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com Costs, as everywhere, are high, and returns on the German racetracks are low. Smaller breeders have been getting out, and even the big owner-breeders who are the backbone of the German industry have been cutting back as the risk-return ratios have worsened. Until last Friday=s sale those breeders who could be identified as >commercial= were working against revenues averaging in the i30,000 range at their flagship sale. The only way German owner-breeders have been able to make it pay is by selling their best stock as it develops. Markets as diverse as Australia, Japan and America, as well as the major European operations, are keen to buy German-breds. With a collective foal crop which was small enough to start with and has been shrinking, the top German breeders can see that it won=t take long to kill the goose that laid the golden egg--especially when they sell the good fillies from those top German families. If they need to see any examples of what happens when a country sells off their top pedigrees, they need only look at what=s happened in America. For over 30 years American breeders have been selling to the Maktoums, to the Japanese (especially during the market crash of the late 1980s and after 2008), and to anybody else prepared to compete at that level, spending big money for the best available stock. Now international buyers stay away from the American sales in droves, because they don=t know the sires and don=t understand the pedigrees. They say it=s because of drugs, but that=s actually a secondary issue, and a convenient excuse. The real reason is because, on the whole, they don=t understand the pedigrees any more, and they don=t need to try and understand them, because the sires in Europe are so good. It=s probably a mistake, because American-breds in Europe punch well above their weight in terms of numbers, but it doesn=t matter as much to European buyers when you see there are 47 yearlings by Galileo in Tattersalls= October Sale Book 1.Cont. p9 “In 2008, Doncaster’s Premier Yearling Sale saw 401 horses sell for just under £13.5-million and an average of £33,650. Now, five years later, the totals are back in that neighborhood: in last week’s sale, 410 yearlings grossed just over £13.3-million and averaged £32,441, with a monumental 86% clearance rate from the catalogue. The gross was up 25% from last year, and is within 1.5% of the 2008 total; the average was up 21% from last year, and is within 4% of 2008’s. • 11. TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 9/4/13 • PAGE 9 of 11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com One thing about being smaller to start with is it can be easier to reverse the trend of declining numbers--a little bit can go a long way--and there are several moves afoot in Germany, both short- and long-term, which could result in the creation of more German-breds, both from the old, established families, and from new ones which could be developed if there were more breeders with commercially justifiable reasons to invest. I can=t emphasize enough how different a program it is to create quantity from quality than to try and create quality from quantity. They have a real basis on which to grow. Maybe there are only eight or 10 major breeders in Germany, but the traditions of their involvement routinely go back three to five generations in their families--that=s the human families as well as the horses. There are good indications that this central corps of top breeders realize that only by joining together to reinforce existing structures, and creating new ones can they lay the groundwork for the >Made in Germany= racing brand to grow and expand. It=s an ironic twist that they already have all the international recognition and demand they need. It is their domestic market which is in desperate need of development. They need more domestic racehorse owners, to create domestic demand so that breeders can justify expanding their numbers. It=s a big project in a country with a great equestrian tradition, but little recognition of horse racing by the vast majority of the German public. Keeneland Week 2 Sires... As we saw last week, the 875 yearlings catalogued in Keeneland=s first week represent just 76 sires. But, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 15 with the new Book 2 (formerly Book 3), there will still be eight more days of selling, with another 3,033 yearlings catalogued, representing 239 sires (click here to see an alphabetical list of all Book 2 sires). The vast majority of Book 1 sires have more representation in Week 2, plus a lot more besides. (List of stallions with 45+ catalogued p11) Five sires have 50 or more catalogued in the second week, headed by WinStar=s Congrats, with 65, and Coolmore=s (nee Ashford=s) Henrythenavigator, with 63. Each has 10 catalogued for Week 1, and therefore are among five sires with 70 or more yearlings catalogued throughout the sale. These yearlings are from Congrats=s first Kentucky crop since moving up from Florida. He stood in 2011 at Vinery for a $15,000 fee. >Henry,= who made the switch from Kentucky to Ireland this year, is the only second-crop sire with three Grade I/Group 1 winners, after the 2-year-old colt Sudirman upset War Command in the G1 Phoenix S. last month. Also with 50+ catalogued in the second week are: WinStar=s 2010 G1 Kentucky Derby winner, Super Saver (57, plus four in Book 1); Lane=s End=s high-class sire Candy Ride (55); and Three Chimneys= Sky Mesa (50, plus six), now fully recovered from a stuttering start back in 2007. Candy Ride, with 24 in Book 1, is one of the five with 70+ catalogued for the whole sale--he has 79--along with Congrats and Henrythenavigator. The overall leader in yearlings catalogued is Spendthrift=s Malibu Moon, currently number three on the TDN North American 2013 General Sire List. He has 87 catalogued, of which 38 are in Week 2. Ashford=s Giant=s Causeway, number four on the North American list, as usual is in the top five by number catalogued, with 74. Finally, big thank-yous and bouquets to Ben Fondrian, CEO, and Peter Muhlfeit, who is in charge of PR and the press room at the Baden-Baden racetrack. The international team which came in to cover the weekend included our own Liesl King, who as I mentioned above did heroic work throughout; ex-TDN staffer Marie Kizenko; Isabel Mathew, from TurfCom in France; Katherine Fidler of Britain=s Racing Post; and the Breeders= Cup=s Josh Christian. Award Recipients Announced: The Jockey Club=s Thoroughbred Incentive Program has chosen the winners of the Thoroughbred of the Year Award and Young Rider of the Year Award, its non-competition awards. The Thoroughbred of the Year Award is given to a Thoroughbred that has been successful in a non- competitive career. This year=s recipient is Loveable Rascal, an 11-year-old therapy horse at Fieldstone Farm in Ohio. Loveable Rascal, bred by Airdire Stud, launched his career as a talented hunter jumper upon leaving the racetrack. He retired from that job six years ago due to injury and began a new start as a therapy horse. ARascal is one of those horses that not only knows he is helping riders, he wants to,@ said Jinene Studinski, Equine Director at Fieldstone Farm. AThrough Rascal=s generous heart and instinct to serve, children with autism and Down Syndrome have said their first words. Adults with multiple sclerosis and children with neurological disorders have improved balance and gained strength. Some have even taken their first steps after riding him. High school students and military veterans have found hope and strength. Rascal is an amazing horse that reaches people of all ages and with all kinds of challenges and helps them become stronger physically and emotionally so they can better cope with daily life.@ The Young Rider of the Year Award is presented to a rider age 18 or under who owns or leases a Thoroughbred for 4H, Pony Club, or other similar activities. This year there were four recipients. Chloe Bellerive owns Lemon Twister, who raced just four times. Together they compete in 4H, FFA, and are ambassadors for the breed and their T.I.P. earning will go to further that goal. AEverywhere we go, after I exit the rings, someone always asks me about his breeding, and I very proudly state he is a Thoroughbred and an ex-racehorse that I was very lucky to find,@ said Bellerive. Madison Shaughnessy adopted her horse MissGuided from a local horse rescue where she volunteered. She will use her T.I.P. money towards college. Natalie Roberts owns Comcord, who was quite difficult in the beginning, which inspired her to go to Vet school. ACece was a very difficult horse when she first came off the track; however, many of her behavioral issues were caused by physical pain related to management practices that were easily corrected,@ said Roberts. The final recipient is Annise Montplaisir, who was introduced to Cyclone Larry when working as a Racehorse Ambassador at the North Dakota Horse Park. She also intends to use her award money towards her education. INDUSTRY INFO
