Duties:
MAIN PURPOSE
The Senior Resident Engineer (RE) is an Engineer, resident on an Eskom station who represents
Babcock from an Engineering perspective.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ensure that statutory issues and technical risks that require engineering input are identified and
communicated to the engineering department.
• Understand the interfaces to other plant outside the Babcock battery limits.
• Knows the issues and opportunities on the plant, as seen from a client perspective.
• Integrates with the client engineering personnel, across all relevant disciplines, and communicate
engineering structures to the engineering department.
• Forms a link between the Babcock and Eskom discipline engineers.
• Have a basic understanding of each engineering discipline.
• Have a working knowledge of what it is that the engineering department can offer the client.
• Understands and communicates clearly the client strategic plan for short, medium and long term for
each boiler.
• Actively involved in engineering project scope management of outages and all tender opportunities,
including definition, WBS development, scope changes and ensuring scopes have been executed.
• Actively involved in engineering project time management, including activity definition, resource
estimation, activity sequencing and schedule development in conjunction with the engineering
resource coordinator.
• Actively involved in engineering cost management, including, manhour estimation and manhour
control in conjunction with the engineering resource coordinator.
• Actively involved in engineering quality management.
• Communication management, including scope visibility and creating awareness of activities on site,
information distribution, and performance reporting on engineering related projects for all stakeholders
(client, engineering, construction and project management).
• Pre-outage activities
Design the metallurgical survey scopes of work in collaboration with the client.
Ensure that system drawings are marked up with the required scope of work.
Participate in developing the outage scope of work.
Develop the outage programme in conjunction with the outage planners.

Lead the outage tender process from a technical perspective.
Prepare all non-specialist requisitions.
Responsible for the timeous placement of orders.
Liaise and coordinate with sub-contractors pre-outage.
• Outage activities
Conduct regular site walk down and advise and communicate on all technical aspects.
Manage technical scope changes during outages from the client to Babcock and from Babcock to the
sub-contractors.
Control engineering manhours for the specific outage.
Close out of all systems, and ensuring engineering data books are checked and issued, and
communicated to the client timeously.
Prepare the engineering close out report for the outage in accordance with the Babcock close out
procedure.
• Monitor, review, and communicate clearly on the technical status of the Power Station’s Key
Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
• Share boiler tube leak inspection duties with discipline engineers, and communicate the overall status
of boiler tube leaks.
• Share boiler tube leak forum meeting duties.
• Actively get involved with plant maintenance philosophies, maintenance plans and plant healthcare
KPI’s and communicate this to Babcock.
• Investigate Plant Failures and report.
• Act as Project Manager for the Lethabo site in his absence.
• Functional Management of Resident Engineers on the Babcock Ntuthuko Generation Eskom fleet.
