On having (or making) the time
to identify tech tools
“I think there’s a misconception that I wake up, and I
use three tools, and I master them in 20 minutes,
and then I present on them the next day.
“I think teachers who tweet and blog, sometimes we
only share the awesome things that we’re doing
and we don’t write about the screw-ups.
“I think the screw-ups are important.”
Nick Provenzano
The Nerdy Teacher
“You find the time for things that are important for
you. It’s about finding those moments that used to
be dead time (pre-mobile devices), and using that
to learn about new tools.
“I don’t want to be that person that, all of a sudden,
I wake up and everything is different, I don’t
understand anything, and I’m playing catch-up.”
Nick Provenzano

● Reluctant teachers, buy-in and adoption
● Integration in the classroom
● His favorite tech tools
● ...And more
On keeping up to speed
with students
“I listen to my kids. I know, it blows people’s
minds! I’m cordial to them; I treat them like
humans! Kids can be really insightful when it
comes to technology--if you take the time to
ask the right questions.
“I think listening and engaging students, and
really asking them what they’re using, is a great
way to find out what’s going on [with
technology].”
Nick Provenzano

On reluctant teachers, buy-in
and adoption
“It’s not just older teachers who are reluctant; it’s
anyone that’s hesitant to change.
“I think a primary reason for that is that teachers
are afraid to fail in front of their students. And I
understand that, I’ve been there--no matter
what job you have, you don’t want to look silly.
“It took me a few years, but I learned to
embrace looking silly. You can’t be perfect, and
you don’t want kids to feel like they can’t make
mistakes, either.”

“One of the things I pass on to teachers who
might be reluctant is: Don’t be afraid to fail
publicly. It’s OK! You’re trying new things!
“The only way that you’re going to be
successful is to try new things. The only way
that you’re going to grow as an educator is to try
new things.”
Nick Provenzano
The Nerdy Teacher
“I think some teachers feel overwhelmed because
they don’t know where to start. And because they
don’t know where to start… they don’t. Choose one
and become an expert at it.”
Nick Provenzano
The Nerdy Teacher
“The other thing that works is a personal one-to-
one. I have found the one-to-one approach to
really work. Personalize it, touch base with them,
positive reinforcement…
“The same methods that work for students,
work for anyone who is trying to learn
something new.”
Nick Provenzano

During our first #EasyBibAMA he
shared his advice with us on:
● Having time to identify ed tech tools

● Reluctant teachers, buy-in and adoption
● Integration in the classroom
● His favorite tech tools
● ...And more
On integration in the classroom
“Curriculum is king. What I’m trying to teach is
always the most important thing. Then if I can
find things that make students more engaged,
or it makes it faster, or easier, or more
accessible… that’s how I view technology.”
Nick Provenzano
The Nerdy Teacher
“I’m teaching To Kill a Mockingbird to my
freshmen right now. I didn’t think to myself,
‘What tools can I use?!’ and then build the
lesson around it. That’s the surefire way to fail.
“I think that’s what a lot of new teachers using
technology do. They find the tool, and they
build the lesson around it, and when the tool
doesn’t do what they want it to do, the lesson
falls apart.”
Nick Provenzano
The Nerdy Teacher
“The way I have tech integrated, if something
were to fail, I can still work and we can still have
class discussions.
“Technology should enhance the lesson, not
anchor it.”

“I’ve been using EasyBib for years. It’s a
standard part of my freshman research paper to
find reliable sources and to do citations.”
