3. Puntland is geographically situated in the northeaster
portion of Somalia. It is bordered by Somaliland
region of Somalia to its west, the Gulf of Aden in
the north, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, the
central Galmudug region of Somalia in the south
and Ethiopia in the southwest.

airport in Somalia, located in Bosaso
▪ Abdullahi Yusuf Airport: Located in Galkayo
Ports :
▪ Puntland Government is currently trying to expand the Bosaso
port which is a key source of government revenue through
taxation on imports and exports for the busiest, if not biggest
port in Somalia after Mogadishu.

9. In 1991: Civil War
In 1998: Homegrown Constitutional Conference was held in Garowe and the autonomous
Puntland State of Somalia was established.
2005: Range Resources announced entry into condition Head of Agreement to acquire a
50.1% interest in the sole and exclusive rights to all mineral and hydrocarbon exploration
and development in the Somali state of Puntland.
During 2007: Horn Petroleum Corporation entered into Production Sharing Agreements
(PSAs) and Joint Operating Agreements acquiring an 80% interest in licenses covering the
Dharoor Valley and Nugaal Valley Blocks in the state of Puntland in northern Somalia.
2009: The 4 Year exclusivity rights of exploration between Range Resources and Puntland
Government no longer applicable.
January 2012: The Puntland government gave the green light to the first official oil
exploration project in Puntland and Somalia at large. Led by the Canadian oil company
Africa Oil and its partner Range Resources, initial drilling in the Shabeel-1 well on
Puntland's Dharoor Block in March of the year successfully yielded oil.
