BARRIERS TO ICT IN SCHOOLS
1. BARRIERS TO ICT
INTEGRATION IN SCHOOLS
THE SCHOOL, AS MANY OTHER SCHOOLS FACES
SEVERAL BARRIERS THAT MAY PREVENT IT FROM
INTEGRATING ICT SUCCESSFULLY.
2. WHAT IS ICT INTERGRATION
• ICT integration is using technology to learn, communicate,
teach, and various other things. It is found in the new
information world were technology is used for almost
everything even for agriculture.
3. THERE ARE DIFFERENT BARRIERS THAT PREVENT
THE SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF ICT IN
SCHOOLS.
THESE BARRIERS ARE CAUSED BY DIFFERENT
FACTORS.
4. LACK OF ELECTRICITY
• THE SHORTAGE OF ELECTRICITY IN THE COUNTRY IS A HUGE
BARRIER TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ICT IN SCHOOLS
• THIS IS MOSTLY A PROBLEM IN THE RURAL AREAS WHERE SOME
DON’T YET HAVE ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY.
• BUT IT IS NOT ONLY A RURAL PROBLEM AS IN ALSO EXISTS IN
TOWNSHIPS, THE REGULAR POWER CUTS AND CABLE THEFT
LEAVES SCHOOLS WITH COMPUTERS THAT SIT IN LABS AND
COLLECT DUST.
5. LACK OF QUALIFIED TEACHERS
• THERE ARE FEWER EDUCATORS WHO HAVE APPROPRIATE
QUALIFICATIONS TO TEACH COMPUTER APPLICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
(CAT).
• WHEN CAT WAS INTRODUCED IN SCHOOLS THROUGH THE OBE
CURRICULUM. TEACHERS WHO HAD LITTLE OR BASIC KNOWLEDGE
ABOUT COMPUTERS OR HAD KEYBOARD SKILL( TYPISTS OR
RECEPTIONISTS) WERE TASKED TO TEACH CAT AND NO FURTHER
TRAINING WAS PROVIDED TO THEM.
• THIS NOW CREATES A BARRIER TO THE LEANERS AS HEY ARE NOT
PROPERLY TAUGHT ALL THAT THEY SHOULD BE TAUGHT THUS THEY
GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL COMPUTER ILITERATE.
6. CORRUPT GOVERNMENT
• THE CORRUPTION IN THE GOVERNMENT LEADS SHORTAGE OF
RESOURCES IN SCHOOLS.
• THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT DELIVER ADEQUATE RESOURCES TO
SCHOOLD AND THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR THE EDUCATORS TO
TEACH COMPUTER SMOOTHLY.
• LEARNERS HAVE TO SHARE THE SAME COMPUTER AND THE SKILLS
ARE NOT DEVELOPED AS THE TEACHER HAS TO DEMONSTRATE
EVERYTHING AND THE LEARNERS DON’T USE THE COMPUTERS.
7. NO INTERNET ACCESS
• MOST GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS HAVE NO ACCESS TO THE
INTERNET
• THEIR LESSONS ARE NARROWED TO THE FOCUS OF THE
TEXTBOOK
• THEY ARE NOT TRAINED ON HOW TO USE THE INTERNET SAFELY
AND APPROPRIATELY.
8. CYBERBULLYING
• THE INCREASE OF CYBERBULLYING IS ALSO A BARRIER TO THE
IMPLEMENTATION OF ICT
• CYBER BULLYING DOES NOT ONLY REFER TO INTERNET
BULLYING BUT TO HACKING TO. WHEN A PERSON HACKS A
COMPUTER, THEY CAN DESTROY THE SOFTWARE AND SAVED
DOCUMENTS OF THE SCHOOL.
• THE SCHOOLS NEED TO USE THE COMPUTERS IN A SAFE
MANNER THAT WILL NOT EXPOSE LEARNERS TO HACKERS OR
TO CYBERBULLYING.
