INTRODUCTION
This document defines what an Enterpriser Resource Planning (ERP) system is, and outlines my knowledge
and work experience working with ERP’s, specifically, Oracle and SAP. It also lists my professional
experience, qualifications, my years of experience, and my skills.
What is an ERP?
ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning, and refers to the systems and software packages used by
organizations to manage day-to-day business activities, such as accounting, procurement, project management
and manufacturing. ERP systems tie together and define a surplus of business processes and enable the flow
of data between them. By collecting an organization’s shared transactional data from multiple sources, ERP
systems eliminate data duplication and provide data integrity from a single source. (Source: Oracle)
Top 4 ERP Trends
The demand for ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software solutions has increased over the past decade,
and with it, the competition has intensified. ERP vendors large and small have tweaked and customized their
solutions to better fit the needs of their target market. There are, however, certain qualities that are currently
in high demand from many prospective ERP customers.
1) ERP Trend #1: Mobile ERP - The ability to access the software from any smart device. At this point,
creating an application that encompasses the entire system is unrealistic, but core features such as
dashboards and reporting are easily accessible.
2) ERP Trend #2: Social ERP - Currently experimental, the concept of linking social media to ERP has
become more prominent in the recent year. The biggest issue surrounding social ERP isn’t in the
programming or functionality, but rather in determining if there is a significant need for it.
3) ERP Trend #3: Integration - Integration in general has become critical to many companies. Whether it
be in software systems such as ERP or CRM, applications such as AutoCAD, or emails like Outlook and
Gmail. ERP integration into other systems like CRM can have many benefits (centralized data, easier
tracking of customer orders/jobs, decreased costs and easier implementation). As different companies
use different systems, applications, and emails, integration needs will vary greatly.
4) ERP Trend #4: Two-Tiered ERP - Two-tiered ERP is needed when a company’s headquarters uses
one ERP system, and a subsidiary or different location(s) use a different system. This can be beneficial
because different locations may have different processes and needs. Two-tiered ERP will then better fit
the needs of each location, improve company processes as a whole, and can reduce costs as well.
Installing smaller ERP systems multiple times can, for example, be cheaper than expanding one gigantic
ERP system.

ERP Vendors/Tiers
Depending on the size of the organization, there are several enterprise resource planning software vendors to
choose from in the large enterprise, mid-market and the small business ERP market.
 Large Enterprise ERP (Tier I): The ERP market for large enterprises is dominated by three
companies: SAP, Oracle and Microsoft.
 Mid-Market ERP (Tier II): For the midmarket vendors include Infor, QAD, Lawson, Epicor, Sage and
IFS.
 Small Business ERP (Tier III): Exact Globe, Syspro, NetSuite, Visibility, Consona, CDC Software and
Activant Solutions round out the ERP vendors for small businesses.

Deployment of Modern ERP System
Before deploying an ERP system, a deployment team must be put together, including potential partners and
vendors. The following elements of modernization are part of the strategy and roadmap, and apply regardless
of technology and market size:
1) Clearly Define Project Goals - Establish KPIs that measure business benefits such as productivity,
financial close speed, and infrastructure costs. Measurable items build project consensus and
approval, keep track of your strategy build, and provide a baseline to assess success at milestones.
2) Document Processes and Inventory Systems - Map your complete IT infrastructure, including
internal and third-party solutions and their integration points, plus redundant systems. Include your
organizational structure to understand roles in conjunction with data ownership, management and
use. It is also critical to define a single source of truth strategy before starting your project.
3) Get Strong Executive Sponsorship - Regardless of company size, executive sponsorship is critical.
You need continuous executive support throughout your entire project. Coupled with ongoing
employee communication, highlighting leadership commitment to your new cloud ERP system will
help drive success.
4) Select an Implementation Approach Aligned to the Organization- A journey to cloud ERP will
vary by customer, and does not require deploying cloud ERP applications simultaneously. Many
companies choose to incrementally adopt high value cloud services that will exist alongside their on-
premises solutions, resulting in a hybrid environment. While other companies start a modernization
journey with core ERP applications, building towards a complete end-to-end transformation.
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
Oracle & SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
Page14
5) Embrace Standard Best Practices Present in the Application - Modern best practices are built
into cloud applications, so you can replace legacy software along with outdated processes and
approaches. ERP 2.0 delivers more than 80 percent of common business processes you need with
built-in standardization – the perfect place to start your project.
6) Study Reporting and Analytics Early - With cloud ERP, users understand your business in real
time, with advanced multidimensional analysis and data visualization providing insights quickly with
no reliance on a data warehouse. Define reporting and analytics needs early in the project plan. Once
live, you can quickly generate meaningful reports.
7) Involve Users and Process Owners from the Start - End users of ERP systems determine the
success of your project. Throughout your implementation, include demonstrations and tests at
regular intervals.
On Premise ERP 1.0 vs Modern Cloud ERP 2.0
The evolution of the cloud has altered the ERP landscape, and companies of all sizes are having to change
platforms to allow user access via mobile smart device. The changing work culture where anywhere/anytime
requires modern cloud-based and hosted ERP systems, no longer tied to on premises environments.
 ERP 1.0 – Consisted of in-house mainframes, such as IBM ES9000 and AS400.
 ERP 2.0 – Builds on the existing legacy ERP’s and eliminates the need for multi-year projects and
heavy customization.

  • 7. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Oracle & SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Page6 INTRODUCTION This document defines what an Enterpriser Resource Planning (ERP) system is, and outlines my knowledge and work experience working with ERP’s, specifically, Oracle and SAP. It also lists my professional experience, qualifications, my years of experience, and my skills. What is an ERP? ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning, and refers to the systems and software packages used by organizations to manage day-to-day business activities, such as accounting, procurement, project management and manufacturing. ERP systems tie together and define a surplus of business processes and enable the flow of data between them. By collecting an organization’s shared transactional data from multiple sources, ERP systems eliminate data duplication and provide data integrity from a single source. (Source: Oracle) Top 4 ERP Trends The demand for ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software solutions has increased over the past decade, and with it, the competition has intensified. ERP vendors large and small have tweaked and customized their solutions to better fit the needs of their target market. There are, however, certain qualities that are currently in high demand from many prospective ERP customers. 1) ERP Trend #1: Mobile ERP - The ability to access the software from any smart device. At this point, creating an application that encompasses the entire system is unrealistic, but core features such as dashboards and reporting are easily accessible. 2) ERP Trend #2: Social ERP - Currently experimental, the concept of linking social media to ERP has become more prominent in the recent year. The biggest issue surrounding social ERP isn’t in the programming or functionality, but rather in determining if there is a significant need for it. 3) ERP Trend #3: Integration - Integration in general has become critical to many companies. Whether it be in software systems such as ERP or CRM, applications such as AutoCAD, or emails like Outlook and Gmail. ERP integration into other systems like CRM can have many benefits (centralized data, easier tracking of customer orders/jobs, decreased costs and easier implementation). As different companies use different systems, applications, and emails, integration needs will vary greatly. 4) ERP Trend #4: Two-Tiered ERP - Two-tiered ERP is needed when a company’s headquarters uses one ERP system, and a subsidiary or different location(s) use a different system. This can be beneficial because different locations may have different processes and needs. Two-tiered ERP will then better fit the needs of each location, improve company processes as a whole, and can reduce costs as well. Installing smaller ERP systems multiple times can, for example, be cheaper than expanding one gigantic ERP system.
  • 8. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Oracle & SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Page7 ERP Vendors/Tiers Depending on the size of the organization, there are several enterprise resource planning software vendors to choose from in the large enterprise, mid-market and the small business ERP market.  Large Enterprise ERP (Tier I): The ERP market for large enterprises is dominated by three companies: SAP, Oracle and Microsoft.  Mid-Market ERP (Tier II): For the midmarket vendors include Infor, QAD, Lawson, Epicor, Sage and IFS.  Small Business ERP (Tier III): Exact Globe, Syspro, NetSuite, Visibility, Consona, CDC Software and Activant Solutions round out the ERP vendors for small businesses. ORACLE Oracle Corporation is an American multinational computer technology corporation, headquartered in Redwood Shores, California and was founded on June 16, 1977. Oracle is a leader in the database software industry for more than three and a half decades. And as it has further developed technologies and acquired best-in-class companies over the years, that leadership has expanded to the entire technology stack, from servers and storage, to database and middleware, through applications and into the cloud. In 2015 Oracle was the second-largest software maker by revenue, after Microsoft. Oracle ERP Cloud Solutions ERP software is the backbone of many organizations.
